    I lived in a condo with my golden for 8 years. The only difference was I actually had to leash walk vs letting him out into a fenced yard. It was fine. He didn't care where he was as long as he was with me.

    for jumping it is very simple but you need to be very clear in it: She should not be allowed to jump on ANYONE. not you, not visitors, nobody. If she does: ignore her untill she is on the ground with all four paws. THEN you can give her a treat or cuddles etc. If it gets to rough, turn around as a jumping dog from the front can sometimes be very rough or uncomfortable. Jumping behavior can be covered at all situations. Not only with jumping ON people. But also for example jumping on things or towards things. Make sure you only give her something (toy, food, pets) when she has all her paws touching the floor.
    Some times it is also a sign of high excitement. Dogs need to learn restraint on that excitement. so one thing that helps with that part that kind of ties in with the jumping is also making sure the dog always gets greeted LAST. When you have guests or you encounter somebody when you are out. Make sure you greet the people and the people greet you first and the greet the dog IF she is on all fours.
    Hope it helps! We just bought a puppy ourselves a few weeks ago as well. Good luck!

    • @plantifulalex
      @plantifulalex  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for all the tips! She doesnt jump on us when we get home at all. She does great about being very submissive when we enter. And also because we made sure since day 1 to never come up and get all high pitch to make her excited. We enter and just show her affection without all the words. Its out in the world she jumps on other people and people pet her anyway which is rewarding her behavior. I try to tell her down or even stand on her leash so she cant jump and it doesnt go well haha

    • @RowenDekkers
      @RowenDekkers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@plantifulalex oof thats too bad, yeah unfortunately you can't really decide what other people out t here do. You can always ask them but you know ... you always have those waaay to excited people that just go for it anyway. I always try to trick people into petting them by not denying them but rather making it a game them. So I say for example. "you can pet him if you can make him sit and be polite" But you always have those few rotten apples unfortunately

    1st, thank you for this video! We just got a Golden his name is Waffles @wafflestheflufster :) and we live in a 2 x 2 950 sqft apt (since California is so darn expensive). He is 10 weeks old and there has no been any issues with space yet. He has some accidents (only pee) inaode the house. We usually keep him in his play pen since he is a baby still and is finishing up his potty training (hes about 60-70% there).
    I believe its a luxury to have a big house. (Specially here in California) and people often think their big houses are enough... theyre not. Dogs are meant to run wild and needs more space than most big hpuses can accommodate for. We live 10 min from the beach and take hil every chance we get! And ao far he has been totally fine. Our apts are pet friendly and have many grassy areas for him to pee and poo. We have a small patio for him to play ball and lay down and chill, he has been happy so far.
    Can you tell us about the biggest challenges of having a growing puppy in an apt? I feel there are so many things that we will need to adjust to as get bigger by the day (its crazy) he will be approximately 90 lbs :')

      Hi Alex! We are having our Golden this saturday and we live in a 1bed apt in Costa Rica. How is everything going so far in your experience? Is it doable? We are thinking to excersice with her 2 hours or so per day when she is an adult.

We are a very active household and take him out at 5am before we go to work, he is learning how to stay home and not tear the house up since he is a pup. So for that meantime he stays at his grandmas. The great thing about owning a golden is that no matter what somewho will always baby sit him for free since he is so damn cute. no one has ever minded takimg care of him for us. We have a big family.

      Nala just requested a follow on IG:) They are such smart dogs, he will pick up on the training thing really quickly. We used the bell technique which is nailed next to the door. She rings that every time she has to go out. She is currently 53 pounds and there hasnt been any issues with the size of our apartment yet. Like you said, they need exercise and space to run around so as long as that is happening, it should be completely fine! They act out when they are bored. Even playing tug of war will wear them out if it is raining outside.

    • @plantifulalex
      @plantifulalex  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Everything has been going great! They will let you know when they need exercise by acting out or chewing from being bored. It has definitely been doable and exceeded my expectations. Good luck with everything!

    • @abcdefggg5658
      @abcdefggg5658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@plantifulalex i wanted to ask about some of his behaviors:
      1) he has began a stage where he is demand barking (loud and hard) when anyone goes into the kitchen or fridge. I feel like his nose has developed all of a sudden and since his playpen is set up adjacemt to the kitchen it triggers him into this crazy barking mode for about 20-30 min following us heating up his food (that he can smell). He'll cry after maybe 25 min and finally relax. At this point we feed him and reward the quiet behavior. We've no placed him in his large kennel pre-meals and he has cut the barking down to 11 min (to relax) in just 48 hrs. Is this normal behavior at his age? He is now 11.5 weeks old.
      & also he tends to jump at ypu and bite you if hes too excited or doesnt get what he wants. We believe we may have reinforced this bad behavior accidentally (and we realized his old family used to put their fingers in his mouth to play with since he opened his eyes as a baby)
      Any advice for us?
      He is a great smart god aside from this, no other real concerns

    Wait.. she holds it all night? Others keep telling you have to set the alarm every two hours at night, so that she doesn't pee all night. So, even when you just got her, that wasn't a thing? I would love to have a golden retriever and I don't mind the hard work, but I do need my 7 hours sleep. Obviously 2 or 3 bad nights in a row isn't the end of the world. But if I would have to wake up every two hours for 2 or 3 months... I don't think that's doable.

      Dog food should all have a chart on the packaging because its all specific to their height and age. She used to have three meals a day until about 6-7 months and now she eats twice a day.

      I totallllyy get that! I have no idea how people do that especially with a puppy because they need so much the first few months. I got my pup after I left my 9-5. People definitely do it though. Maybe with a dog that is already potty trained and able to not be in a crate all day is a much better situation. Good luck!!

    • @plantifulalex
      @plantifulalex  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd say it is definitely manageable. If the dog is in a tiny space and not given exercise, then maybe not. It depends on your lifestyle. If you are able to give the pup a lot of walks and maybe get to a dog park so it can socialize, I'd say go for it!

    here to say making a carnivorous animal eat only plants because of your ethical views is animal cruelty. do not have a pet if you're not going to feed it what it needs to be healthy and happy.

    • @plantifulalex

      I don't feed her only plants for that reason. She is a carnivore.

      @@plantifulalex I was worried when you said that you're considering putting her on a plant-based diet because there are proteins in plants. They're harder to digest and doesn't have all the amino acids. There's also a difference between surviving and thriving. I'm glad you're not imposing your ethical views on your pet. Thank you.
