    The sculptor mentioned at around the 18.12 mark, Anthony Barton, is still sculpting 15/18mm Napoleonic figures today - he's widely regarded as the pre-eminent guy in the field and he still sculpts them in the way described. If you look up AB Miniatures you'll see his figures in 18mm - his figures are better than the vast majority of 28mm out there. He also does 20mm WWII figures the same way, and they're marvellous. He's getting on a bit now and has some arthritis but as Gary mentions he also sculpts 1/12 figures and equipment, and does some work making reproductions for museums. A very talented guy, indeed.
    Danny Boreham on the other hand legged it with all the Battle Honours masters, which he sold on, leaving Tony Barton with sod all. So poor Tony had to start over - AB Miniatures is the result.

    I was packing some stuff up for one of the Perry twins once (at GW mail order) and I didn’t know if it was Michael or Alan I needed to put down on the invoice “which one are you mate?” I said “Ah, it’s easy to remember” he said, holding up the stump of his arm “I’m mangled Michael!” - lovely lads!

    As a little boy I thought Gary's sculpt of Nagash was the absolutely most mind blowingly cool model. Thank you so much for your amazing undead sculpts Gary!

    I had the pleasure of spending a hour with Gary and a one to one sculpting session. He is awesome, and his greens are amazing, was amazed by how much is lost in the moulding process, his greens have a amazing sense of life that is lost.

    • @thepaintingphase
      @thepaintingphase  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's super interesting, I was also amazed at how detailed the greens were. Be really interesting to follow the process from a scupt to finished model.

    • @benstampton2048
      @benstampton2048 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thepaintingphase absolutely, having seen both his resins and master metals, it’s still amazing at how much can’t be copied, it sounds a bit woo hoo but the greens really have a life impossible to capture. Yet I’ve seen other sculptors who’s greens are made more alive by the moulding process very weird!

    And about the Green Knight, according to WD (210 pg 4) Repanse was the very first model Michael Perry sculpted after losing his right arm, and I'd misremembered, the Green Knight was the very last model he sculpted before his accident according to WD 206 pg 81.
    Even crazier that he was banging out lots of great sculpts and his style didn't miss a beat.

    I have been an avid Blood Bowl player since 1998. I love the game and run leagues. I would rather have a Gary Morley metal than any of the current plastics. Given the choice between a whole team of plastic individuals vs the same 16 metal linemen, I would choose the metal one every time.

    Gary really set the style for blood bowl with those sculpts, the 3rd edition Orc team is still my favorite for the sheer character. I will confess I was not a fan of the Nagash, although largely because it was such a departure from Mark Gibbons's art which is probably my favorite piece of Warhammer art, the fact the art followed makes a lot of sense. I have also heard about the resculpt from my retail days via the rumour mill, and apparently the original was nicer so I heard. If Gary ever does feel like a second appearance it would be great to hear his thoughts on training sculptors. I think the Spanish scupltor might be Felix from Avatars of War

    Such a great episode again gents. Getting to see all these famous names in the flesh is wonderful, especially being an old stager who remembers them all. The cynical part of me wonders if keeping sculptors and artists anonymous is more about the prevention of poaching as much as the protection of safety? As an addendum of the Peachy Sharpe Bingo idea - every time he mentions it, he has to dress up like a Rifleman and paint a Napoleonic model as one of the characters. All joking aside though I'd love to see him paint IG as Sharpe's Rifles

      Its amazing to me how much of my personal GW history is tied to Gary's sculpts.
      I had an Undead army (never had Nagash either), and Blood Bowl was my mainline game as a kid, and Can Saar was my OG Necromunda gang, and then Lord of the Rings. Although I wasn't quite as across who sculpted what at the time.
      So thanks, Gary, for my childhood. :)

    The Green Knight was seriously the first model he created after having his arm blown off??? Wow, that's astounding.
    Hearing that your undead models weren't considered that great..... XD They are some of my favorite models.

    Sure the Nagash model doesn't hold up very well compared to today's standard but then again few of the minis from that era do. And if you're into Oldhammer he fits right in, so Nagash is in great company :)

    Absolutely amazing guys, yet again! I really look forward to these chats. Gary was a wonderful guest and I'm apparently one of the odd old hobbyists that actually liked Nagash. My mind was blown hearing he did all of Blood Bowl, never knew that!
    Can't wait for the next show, carry on the wonderful work and take care :)
