    Thank you so much for putting that together. I just bought a 2013 model with the same issue. I now know what to do👍

    One of the first problems I had with my 2014 models was the fuel overflow pipe being blocked. Didn't notice until after rain I opened the fuel cap and saw it full of water which proceeded to pour into the tank. Had to quickly shut it to seal it off, then get a vacuum to get the water out before opening it again. Didn't seem to cause engine trouble, but my fuel pump seems to be a bit iffy a few years later. It doesn't shut off from it's whirring noise and sounds like a ticking is now happening.

    Just had my filler assembly in bits in order to fit a Givi tank ring, and guess what? Rust everywhere! I cleaned it as well as I could and put it all back together. I intend to order the 2 gaskets and follow your excellent fix. I was totally unaware of this issue until I found your video. BMW dropped a bollock there! Crap design. Luckily, the rest of the bike is well put together and problem free!

      Same thing here! - Last weekend removed the filler cap to put a Givi tank ring.. all the screws were rusty.. I did not remove the filler completely, I will have to check and see if the fix is necessary.. or at least to put the tank cap seal!

    Thank you for your video! Mine was rusty too and I did a very similar procedure. Your video was a great guide!

    Interesting to see that this cover ring was created for the NINE T bike, but is fitting quite well on this R1200R 2009.

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, this part was available before the Nine T was released, it's from another model which I mention in the video, but likely fits several models, including the R1200R.

    Hey there, just had to check mine after seeing your vid, fortunately mine was clean with no rust. I’m from Calgary’s so it’s very dry here. Thanks for the trick with the gasket though. For the 5 bucks it’s good insurance to put it on. Thanks for posting the video. Cheers

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure and really pleased to know yours is OK. It’s also quite possible that they quietly found and fixed this mid-production and hoped those affected wouldn’t notice until it was much too late, as was my case.

    Do you need to take tank off and fuel pump to put your hand in the tank to reconnect the fuel strip, over flow line and breather tube?

    This is a great video! I've got a 2013 R1200R. Your video made me check and sure enough, f'n rust all over underneath! I'm going to make the repair. You made it look easy. I'm curious though... Did you ever check to see how your repair held up? You did a beautiful job, so, I have no doubts it's still perfect. But again, I was just curious to find out if you checked. Cheers!

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jason, glad you enjoyed this one and were hopefully able to save your own tank. I don't know how BMW got away with this. My repair held up for a few years, I touched it up once I think. The problem is, the issue is baked into the design, so regular checks are important. A full 'tank-off' repair would also be better than the way I did this one.

      @@LiquidAudio Thank you for the quick response! There are a few things about this BMW bike that have me scratching my head (that damned charcoal canister and the exhaust servo to name a couple). But the thrill it gives my heart to really ride it more than compensates! What's a guy to do? :) Keep the rubber side down, bro!

    High ethanol fuel absorbs and hold water in the fuel all the time. It will get worse when it increases.

    Just a dumn question many. years later - did you remove the tank and drain it or did you leave the gaz in and evaporate? I'll check my 09 this weekend even if in winterstorage (Denmark...) /BR Claus

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Claus, I think I must have drained the fuel, though I can't recall if I removed the tank or left it in place and let the pump do that work. I did block the top off to work on it too, though.

    Hi buddy ,
    I'm riding a suzuki vstrom 650 2016 low maintenance but I have an opportunity to buy bmw r1200r 2009 4000mile $6500.after all your problems would you still recommend this bike?
    Thanks for your time .

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, yeah look these are amazing bikes and really not like anything else on the road. Go and ride one and see how you like it. You'll need to go for a decent ride to get the feel for it because they feel and ride differently to other bikes, but they are fantastic machines, just let down by a couple of issues that are easily fixed for the most part.

    Hi Mike, I have 2011 model, experiencing same problem for years now, never really look into this till now. BMW try to sell me another Tank for £1500, claiming it is the only way they can deal with it. They advise me not to undo the torx screw as it might snap. Do you know what does the inside of the tank look like? What is the extend of the rust? TA

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      dude456874 Hi mate, I cannot comment about your tank as I haven't seen it, but my bet is it will be similar to mine, therefore very repairable. This is a no brainer though - they want to sell you a new tank. This is because they only ever replace, they never repair parts, it's part of BMW 'policy'. If you undo a fastener and it snaps, you've lost nothing because they want to sell you a new tank anyway! You may as well try and see, you have nothing to lose! Inside the tank shouldn't be rusty. Mine was only rusty at the filler, as you see in the video. You can check yours by using an inspection camera, available for not much money from auto parts stores. Don't let BMW fleece you. They will try whenever they can and most owners are not technically skilled enough to know better. Good luck with it.

      @LiquidAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, I sold the bike so I can't say how long the repair lasted. I suspect it would need to be looked at again every few years though.

      @@LiquidAudio Thank you for your response, I would probably agree, I will get a gasket going forward to help the problem. Oh by the way top tip - the use of the ear buds! I put photos of my repair on the Facebook owners site and got a lot of comments! Happy riding

    Thank you sooo much. Is the rear drive problem a manufacture year specific fault?

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question Blaz, it seems common, but I can't say which years exactly this applies to.

    • @geodezija8888
      @geodezija8888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LiquidAudio Just thinking, how would it be if you would simply cut away the rubber ring around the drainage hole away and remove it from the gasket. This way the gas as well as water could flow throuh the drainage hole? BTW do you still own the bike? Mine is MY 2010.

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geodezija8888 This is a good idea and worth trying. I gave up on my bike, there were just too many issues on what is sold as a premium product. The fuel filler problem is so bad it's hard to believe it got through the design stage, and yet it did.

  • @lnlxxx807

    SHAME on BMW for the support. Same problem as you and they don't considered it

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, BMW are a disgrace over this and other technical and design issues. I've just finished yet another round with BMW, this time over the plastic throttle pulleys snapping. I'll be making a video about that soon, BMW just didn't want to know, or care about yet another obvious engineering goof. The problem is that it affects us, the owners of these products. Stay tuned!

  • @conhennekens
    @conhennekens ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you know if the 2012+ still suffers this problem? I am willing to check that and repair like you did, but I am a bit reluctant.
    How did you prevent rust chips to fall into the fuel?

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if unsure, just pull the tank and take it to a shop. I used a cardboard tube to fill the hole, thought that was in the video but maybe not, it's been a while!

    • @conhennekens
      @conhennekens ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LiquidAudio, yes, it's been a while! In the video you didn't show the actual chipping away of the rust chips. I think that's hard to do with a roll of kitchen tissue in the middle. Hence the question. Thanks.

    • @LiquidAudio
      @LiquidAudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@conhennekens Yeah I used various screwdrivers from memory and I think I taped up the hole when I needed better access. I remember that having the paper towel tube in the middle sealed the hole really well, but it got in the way. Ultimately the best way is tank off and bench repair. I was taking a few shortcuts!

      @LiquidAudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The 'acceptability' of the language used is your opinion Gordon, but I take your point. I'd encourage you to look beyond the way someone speaks though and focus on the message, that's more important.
