Hey guys, in today's video I show you how to tie an easy Tautog (Blackfish) rig. I will be the first to admit that I am still a novice Tog fisherman, but I am getting better, especially fishing for Tog from the shore. I wanted to start getting away from store bought rigs and tie my own and I feel the rig I show you is a great beginner rig to tie and it's definitely helped me catch more fish and have a lot less snags and lost rigs. I hope you enjoy and as always, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE!!
your story is mine exactly. We are lucky where I fish to crush stripers most of the summer, but the fall is terrible. This year I decided to circle back to blackfish, which for me has been frustrating and time consuming. First three trips out this year we had easy limits on the jig. However when the tide rips its back to a tied hook rig. Thank you for the lesson here I dont like using a double hook rig even though they have been very productive. Great vid
Hey Rich! Thank you so much for the kind words. Just be prepared, Tog fishing is ADDICTING!! Come back and give us some updates on how it's going. Good luck and tight lines!!
Wish all the tutorials out there were as easy to follow. Just have one question if you get a chance to answer it’ll be awesome! I’m heading out of sheep’s head bay party boat in a couple of weeks for Tau Tog. Last couple of times I believe we used heavy sinkers. Reading the comments I got that anything heavier than 3oz do not use the jig and go for the rig correct? They supply the standard Hi-Lo rig but I rather spend a few dollars and time to make a better rig. Thanks for your time bud and keep up the good work!!
Great video Mike. The jig has been my go to the past couple of Tog seasonsl. Always a time and place for the rig with the lead. If I have to go heavier than a 3oz jig, I’ll switch it up to the rig.
Hi I use a rig similar to this down in Florida ware I live we have to use circle hooks some times I use conventional tackle on and some times I will use spinning tackle thanks
Thank'ya Mr Mike for showing me in a way I could understand! And I really like how you did it in a perspective of overhead so it would be like I was actually tying it myself, that was awesome! 😊
Does the bottom loop connected to the jig ever snag on things and have you ever tied directly to the jig instead? I love Trik Fish Fluorocarbon. It's the main line I use in freshwater.
My snags have gone way down man. And i have tied directly to the jig, but this is nice because i can do a quick swap if i need to go to a different size jig, or switch to rig fishing, just swap out with a sinker. Thanks for watching buddy
How long do you cut the leader and how do you attach your rig to your line. I bought tog today for first time but on a striper set up with green crab lol
Congratulations on getting monetized. Great job on this video showing your Tautog rig. I really need to work on tying rigs like that for saltwater fishing.
I'm a novice at blackfishing too. Nice simple rig and I really liked the stepped walkthrough. I even learned a new way to tie a dropped loop. Thanks - will be practicing a bit this week!! How are you attaching to main line if not using a swivel?
Thanks for watching! Glad this helped you out. And I use an albright knot to attached leader to main line. If you go in our "Saltwater Fishing" playlist, the video is on there. How to tie an albright knot. Very easy to do and a very strong knot
Great video, Mike. Tautog fishing is ADDICTIVE. Proceed at your own risk. It only takes ONE try, and a fisherman is hooked. Not sure what it is about Tog, but it's unique and unlike anything else. The jigs, the crabs, the bite, the rocks, the fat lips, white chins and teeth of the fish, I dunno . . . . it all combines into an endorphin inducing intoxication. Cheers to you and Katie, best wishes for a Merry Christmas and many tight lines in 2021!
Thanks so much Rich!!! Was my first go at a "how-to" video, so appreciate you watching and the feedback. And you're absolutely right. Its the only fishing I wanna do right now. There's just something about it, gets in your blood. Merry Christmas to you and yours Rich. Thanks for your amazing support!
@@MKOutdoors no problem. It was good man. Keep em coming. We're probably going to do the same to keep the channel alive during the winter. Its really all we can do at this point. Congrats again on getting monetized!
I've seen people put a slider on for their sinker. So fish will run with bait and sinker stays on bottom 🤔. Do you think this set up is good or bad? Thats my last question. Your videos are awesome 👌

Thanks guys. You guys would love it!! Thanks for watching!!!
hi,should I use 50pound mono for 4oz sinker? Because sometimes I cast a 4oz sinker with a 40 pound mono, the line would break by the sinker
I've used as light as 30lb for leadee and haven't had any problems. 50 would be fine

Hi, how long should the leader line be?
I usually use around 3 feet or sometimes more, so if you get snagged and broken off, you only have to tie the loops instead of retying leader to braid
When fishing off the shore, does sinker need to be on top or bottom loop?
Bottom loop
Ok. Yes I put it on bottom. Thanks
@@Cryptony1975 anytime. Thanks for watching
What size hook? Is it mustad 4/0
5/0 Virginia hook
You still putting crab on both or putting something else on the 5/0?
@@Cryptony1975 when jig fishing, crab on both. A lot of fish hit that teaser hook
