The assimilated Dog was named Jed and he was an *very* good actor!
They said that he was always focused; he didn't track the camera and he didn't react to all the dogs barking around him.
He was also part wolf and his trainer told the cast that when Jed was near, not to look at or touch him. Cause there was a chance he'd become aggressive.

the shadow in the beginning isn't even cast by any actor in the movie, it's someone from the crew working on the film.. Carpenter wanted it to be as ambiguous as possible.
ps. Rob Bottin was 21-22 when he made the special FX in this film - worked himself into the hospital to get everything done..

John Carpenter is a LEGEND. Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, The Thing, Halloween, Escape from New York, the list goes on. 3 of his films are in my top 100. A creative man who surrounded himself with other very creative people. You're right, Neal, they don't make them like this anymore. John Carpenter created wayyyy outside the box and it's not commercially viable to do that today.

That you didn't know what The Thing looked like made you tense is part of the beauty of The Thing. In most cases, once you know what the creature looks like, it relives most of the tension in the film which is why they save the reveal for the end. In The Thing they show you the Dog-Thing in the first act and, if anything, it ratchets up the tension because The Thing DOESN'T have a definite shape (in both the movie and the novella it's based on), and that's horrifying.

I became a special effects artist because of this film and others like the Star Wars trilogy and the whole reason was because it was MAGIC for real, just like a magician does real things in front of a real audience. Every film that came out in that decade was like that, from Aliens to An American Werewolf in London, every film gave us more magic to try to to figure out how it was done in front of the camera.

  • @CommadoreGothnogDragonheart
    @CommadoreGothnogDragonheart 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Regarding the flamethrowers, according to the original novel that the movie was based on says:
"McReady wedged men out of his way and drove down the narrow corridor packed with men unable to reach the scene. There was a sure foreplanned drive to McReady's attack. One of the giant blowtorches used in warming the plane's engines was in his bronzed hands. It roared gustily as he turned the corner and opened the valve. The mad mewing hissed louder. The dogs scrambled back from the three foot lance of bluehot flame."
So while they're certainly not standard, it would be easy enough to create a fictional justification for having them, depending on their research, possibly clearing snow or de-icing equipment.

It was really subtle, but towards the beginning Blair was pointing out different parts of the Thing brought back from the Norwegian camp with a pen. Really interesting what you said in the intro about not knowing anything about the movie through pop culture references. I think one reason horror fans love The Thing so much (beyond the fact that it's a straight masterpiece) is it's one of the bona-fide horror classics that really hasn't entered the public consciousness. Everyone and their mom has seen Halloween, The Blair Witch Project, The Exorcist, etc. And those movies immediately became pop culture icons. The Thing absolutely crashed and burned at theaters and only gained its reputation slowly over the following decades. A perpetual under the radar movie, but universally beloved by horror fans. Great reaction. 😊

This is itself a "remake," tho it really is more of a sequel. The 1951 movie is The Thing From Another World and is WELL worth watching.

  • @dorkmier
    @dorkmier 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The story was written by John W. Campbell, Jr. and was published in 1938. The movie The Thing From Another World was released in 1951 and was loosely based on the book and Carpenter and his friends were big fans of the movie. When it came to Carpenter remaking the movie he didn't want to step on the toes of the original so he went to the book and followed that story closely. Of course he had to update the story some. The remake isn't a remake, it's a prequel. Great story, movie and reaction.

12:24...I think they have a flame thrower because Antarctica is very cold so occasionally stuff might get frozen solid and need to be thawed rather quickly. Maybe they run in to put the fire out so quickly because they don't want the main camp building to catch fire and burn down. This would be very bad because Antarctica is very cold 🤔

The Thing is one of my favourite horror films, so glad you're reacting to it.
When you said how little you knew about it that put such a smile on my face, can't wait to see how you react to... The Thing.
EDIT: Great reaction, I remember having similar questions when first watching, especially about why the Norwegians are shooting such a cute dog. XD
Honestly one of my favourite animal performances in the assimilated dog.
Glad you loved the effects so much as that is such an important part of the film. Wish more films would use more practical effects like this did. New trailer for the next Thor film I thought was a video game because it looked 99% CG. And CG can look great, but when it's overused, and a film is on a strict deadline stuff can really turn out bad.
Since you mentioned about the suspicions growing, I thought I'd mention that the game Among Us was inspired by this film, in fact they made a map based off of locations in The Thing.
Anyway, great video as always, looking forward to the next reaction.

Love the subtle-dog acting. Macready's "If-I-lose-You-Lose-With-Me" nature is hinted at with the Chess scene and "We have to bring it all down into the ice", finally completed with "Yeah, Fuck YOU TOO!". The B/W film finding the UFO is from the 50s film. Watch closely; The Blood-Locker was sabotaged, not by Gary or Copper, but when Windows returns to Bennings, and drops the keys. When the group burns him, they ask where Blair is. Blair got infected slowly, cause he keeps putting his pen in his mouth during autopsies, after touching the Dog-Thing with it. Fukes did say Blair had locked himself in his room for hours. Also, the silhouette that passed Fukes in the lab is Blair, as the same musical *Sting* effect is used on him at the end, when he jumps out on Gary. The thing that became Norris, made the unknowable error, of assimilating someone with an underlining health-issue. His body clearly has an heart attack, but only transformers and attacks Dr Copper, when he "Attacks" the body with electricity from a defibrillator. It seems reasonable that Windows was scared by the Test (Nice piece of subversion by the way, along with Clarke) as he feared that a Thing could take you over, then give itself a "Deep-Cover" by convincing it's host, by projecting it's original personality on to itself as the perfect cover.
Although its an open ending: I thoroughly believe that Childes is a Thing at the end. As soon as he walked outside, seconds later the lights go. He lied about seeing Blair, as the generator was gone, and that he was wearing a Silver/Grey Coat. There is an establishing shot after finding Blair's DIY UFO where there is a Silver/Grey Coat hanging on the coat hooks. Childes has (up to this point) been wearing a Navy Blue Coat. The Thing tears through clothes, hence why Childes changes coats. Then there's the very odd statement that he gives Macready when he sees him. "You the only one?" sounds very "you the only human left" Then there's the whiskey. Fukes stated that small part of the Thing could be enough to take them over, so the rule of eating out of cans or self-prepared meals and drinks. NO Sharing. Macready gives Childes the Whiskey to drink, and he fails the test, that why he smiles at the end. There's also a meta clue from Ennio Morricone. His score is haunting. The double beat, prevalent throughout the film, almost like a hear beat. When we see the Huskey for the first time, it rhythmical starts up, like a musical-que for the Thing. When we fade to black at the end of the film, the beat returns, as if the Thing is still alive.

Blair is infected pretty early on in the story. His infection explains some mysteries within the film such as:
Who sabatoged the blood? Blair did.
      Who took the keys? Blair
Who did Fuchs see outside in the snow? Blair. It's also the reason why he killed himself, because when he saw Blair outside ( and not locked up) he knew he was an imitation.

Hi Neil. Really enjoyed this reaction video. Keep them coming. It's obvious that you enjoyed it and appreciate it for the masterpiece John Carpenters version of The Thing really is. Would love to see another reaction video on David Cronenberg's version of 'The Fly' (1986).
    Stay Safe.

Oh wow, I forgot about The Fly. Is the 80's version the one one with Jeff Goldblum? That's some good schlock. I felt horrible for him. And Glodblum has this weird enchanting mesmerism about him.

Can't believe that anyone of a certain age hasn't seen this. Enjoyed your reaction, but the aspect that always stood out for me was the characters even more than the Thing. The working-class characters, every one of them believable, every reaction totally on point. It was very much like the original Alien in that respect. The best part of the prequel was that answered a lot of questions that we had from the original like was that really a man in there? lol.

It was probably either the Palmer-Thing or the Norris-Thing who tried to frame McCready. Also Neill why did you cut the funniest line in the film when poor old Garry finally loses his sh*t about "being tied to this couch all f*cking winter" I think at this stage we all knew how Garry felt 😔 (🤣).

When did Blair get infected? When he touched the thing with the eraser of his pen, then touched his mouth with it. No to mention wearing a couple of gloves and feeling around its guts with his bare arm touching it.

Diabetes - lol! The practical effects are to be lauded. Great point about asymmetry and our response to it. I would like to dissect and compare this to Alien and the similarities to a group in isolation and having a creature inhabit a human character only to destroy it - much to the “horror” of the group. Then that manic process of elimination.

If you're up for a "horror" movie which is notable for daring direction and top-tier performances, as well as a crew that all seemed to be at the top of their game for a single movie then I'd suggest - if you haven't seen it - that you check out The Exorcist from 1973.

    2. A kick ass John Carpenter movie that also features "Kurt Russel you will enjoy is "Escape from New York"😎
    3. That was a doobie.
    4. This was before CGI.
    5. Not murder. Self defense because Clark was attacking him with the scalpel.
    6. Even with all the cool stuff the part than unhinges me a little more is when Blair is pulling Garry by the face.
7.They're going to freeze to death. Keep in mind you can't see Child's breath. I don't have bluetooth so I can't see it)

You so cracked me up when you said doesn't anybody see the head pulling itself to safety,..huh I was like pulling, it's gonna get up and walk away to safety,..so terrifying, especially when I use to think of how my mom would tell me to drop my toys, and stop playing, cause we had to go somewhere, and she'd say they'll be here when you get back they're not gonna get up and walk away!,.. and you, sitting with your mouth agape, ..hmmpf,..dear in the headlights, stunned and godsmacked,..we know,..must commend you on not eating,..good call with that considering you didn't know how gross, how horribly disgusting it would be, we didn't know either, the trailer, like Alien gave no clue, the first ones,..by the time it was featured on Siskel and Ebert(film critics, who would review upcoming movies), think that's when they played a trailer with a snippet of the dog kennel scene where the thing raised a claw, as if to break out through ceiling,..before that all they'd show is TK Carter skating through the halls with Superstitious playing,..not a clue to the horror you were going to see,..lot of really good actors,..doc, Richard Dysart is in Prophecy, another one with a vague trailer,..Wlford Brimley is in Cocoon,.,..another good one is The Hidden, another who's human,
who's not, very good, humor, action,..Bad Moon,..for those not wanting too terrifying,..a family dog is a homegrown detective, trying to protect his family from a horror,..kinda like Silver Bullet with Gary Busey,..it's good,..then there's older, THX38, dystopian sci-fi, like 1984, V For Vendetta,
you might recognize someone from Lonesome Dove, wink, wink nudge, Silent Running, scifi,..and if you haven't,..2001 Space Odyssey, and 2010 with Roy Scheider,..John Lithgow,..and a young Jason Statham's mom in Fast and Furious series, wink, wink, nudge,..it's very, very good, and eerily similar to what's going on now while Earth's astronauts are up in space, keep going, enjoy, Godspeed, Peace ✌

Remember that The Thing isn't just a monster -- it's intelligent. MacReady becomes the defacto leader of the group, so the thing (Palmer) wants to undermine MacReady. It's a reasonable assumption that Palmer is the one who tore up one of MacReady's jackets with the intent of planting it.
The Thing also needs to eliminate Fuchs (because he is "working on a new test" and he's probably smart enough to figure something out). We can assume Fuchs catches Palmer with the torn up clothes and Palmer kills him. (The Thing doesn't want to imitate Fuchs, because the other people in the group will become suspicious if Fuchs doesn't deliver on a new test.)

The 2011 The Thing is only a remake in a derogatory sense. Truly, it's the prequel to the 1982 film and details the events of the Norwegian base. You're right though in that the heavy use of cgi really raised a lot of hackles in the fandom.

Please can you try and react to a new show called the 1% club. Lee Mack is the host. It's an interesting idea, the audience are the contestants, there's 100 of them and they get asked questions that a certain % of the UK population would get right. Starting from 80% of people got right, so easier, down to the last question that 1% would get right. I think you'd do really well at it.

The Prequel was Derped from the beginning because of studio exec's. The production was going to do practical effects in the same spirit as this movie, but in there profound lack of intelligence, the studio did CG instead. Everybody saw the difference and nobody liked it.

The winter in Antarctica starts in the last weeks of June. It's not part of South America. Antarctica is nation-less. It's available to any nation to use but not to annect. If a Norwegian came to the US base and needed provisions, the US station had to help out in any way possible. That's the UN law of Antarctica.

This is actually a remake , the 50s original was on tv last year . The cinema I saw this one at is now a car park. John Carpenter made some super films .This is unusual as it's not an original story . Liked them all as they had decent plots when the 80s were dominated by witless body counts . The effects and music , mostly written by him made his films pretty unique . The most famous Halloween and The Fog . Strangely Star man - a box office flop and not horror is my favourite . Nice to see your reaction ., I like the effects CGI doesn't come close for me .

Fun fact: the remake is actually a prequel set in the Norwegian base. It was all practical effects and also had a 3rd alien, the ship's pilot, also practical, but half way through a studio exec came in, hated the practical work, ordered most of it destroyed, and ordered it replaced with shitty cgi. The exec was fired but they had no time or budget to recreate the practical stuff and reshoot.

Yes they don't make em like this anymore.
Even the newer The Thing uses c graphics and its extremely obvious..
Still good though. It takes place before this one. It ends with the alien dog running away and the Norwegian helicopter is chasing it.
Also you see how the frozen monster (that they found) became to be..
