one thing I've always appreciated about Adrian Monk's characterization is that when someone's life is on the line he pushes hard and overcomes his fears. That's a consistent thing about his character, when the chips are down he never puts perceptions of his own safety above others, he always does the right thing. It's not just the people he cares about either, he's jumped into the fray to save a stranger as well.
well, he *tries* to, which is really whats important. and in the later seasons he gets a lot better at it. but there are a few examples at least in season 1 of him starting to go after a bad guy, and then freezing up as a result of his phobias.
Not only that, he'll do it to catch the true killer. Like when he jumped in the back of a moving garbage truck and pulled out the trash as the compactor was running, just to get the evidence they needed to convict the guy
Just like when Sharona was stuck on the ferris wheel with the killer and Monk started climbing it, actually saying, "What am I doing?!"😆 Say what u will about him, but he'll put his life on the line when it comes down to it
I love scenes like this. Seeing a guy who is usually afraid of everything overcome those fears and hang out of a moving car, be a total badass and shoot at the bad guy’s vehicle, while also being smart enough to shoot at the hydraulic rather than the actual bad guy to save Natalie.

Tbf, in a real scenario, you wouldn't know if the truck would stop. All of these comments saying that they should've just stopped the truck without all of that other stuff are basing their comments off what happened at the end, which admittedly, is the major problem with the chase. However, if you put yourself in the characters' shoes, they don't know if the truck would stop or if they'll get crushed trying to make it stop. They can't see the end result like us. This means that the chase made sense right up until they contradicted the storyline by having the truck stop like nothing. Should've at least have somebody talk him into pulling over or have monk shoot him or something along those lines.
