@malice catastrophe yeah, they don't differentiate between the physiological responses to being interrogated (i.e. due to nervousness) vs. the the physiological stress of lying. plus, many pathological liars and hardened criminals can get around it fairly easily as they feel no remorse for what they did
@@JamaicanRain that was what I thought - right before he says his thing about shooting Shawn, he appears to breathe out in exactly the manner Shawn did.
Okay, everybody's talking about the awesome relationship between Shawn and Juliet, but the relationship between Lassie and Juliet is one of the best in the series and maybe my favorite platonic relationship in fiction.
I love when Lassiter goes in to the Chief’s office asking for a new partner bc Jules is lying to him and Vick is like “you hooked her up to a polygraph machine and YOU’RE the one who wants a new partner?” 😂
I think this is part of the reason Jules was so upset when she learned he wasn't psychic. If he could lie to her about being a psychic for so long and even beat a polygraph, he could've lied when he said he loved her.
Polygraphs just detect stress responses. If you know how to stay cool as a cucumber while lying, it's easy to beat. On the flip side, if you're under a lot of stress while telling the truth, you'll get a false positive.
I've been in a relationship with someone who lied to me from day 1 about a very similar topic. When I found out the she wasn't who she pretended to be, this destroyed my entire trust in her. This was over 10 years ago, I still like her as a friend, and although she has changed a lot since then I can not imagine being in a relationship with her anymore.

There is no better cast on television than the Psych gang. The casting was pitch perfect for every character, the obvious bond between the cast is always top shelf, 100% of the time. they navigate drama, comedy, horror and EVERYTHING else perfectly and they never miss a beat. Even in the one or two unenjoyable episodes the show had the cast was electric. The chemistry between everyone in this show was (and still is, in the movies) off the charts.
This scene is so important because Shawn says he is psychic and confesses his love for Juliet Everyone believes him(Except Lassie coz you know Lassie) and so does Jules Later when Jules finds out that he is not a psychic She snaps because he lied(of course) But if the psychic thing isn't true them him confessing his love wouldn't have been true too.
What is being a psychic though... he technically has esp and notices things about cases and crime scenes that no one else does, so who cares if its not magic it is essentially a form of being psychic. And polygraphs are notoriously easy to fool or get false positives cuz they run on heartrate its why they alone are no longer admissable evidence in most court cases they are easy to fool if you can keep calm and easy to fail if you get nervous innocent or not
But we know that he was able to fool the lie detector test because he took a deep breath, and was carefully controlling his reaction. Whereas his love confession he blurted out. He meant it 😊
I love me some Psych None of Shawn's answers mean anything because he can cheat the lie detector, but his impulse to saying he loves Jules is 100% honest Edit: Lassie is easily my favorite love to hate characters of all time, which just turned into love - his character arc with Shawn and Gus over the years was awesome
Lassie setting up the whole scenario just to try and trick Juliet into revealing that she’s dating Shawn is the most genius moment he’s had in the entire show.
Psych always seemed to have the tightest mix of different kinds of comedy. Any episode might have wordplay, absurdity, clowning, physical comedy, as well as political/contemporary, satire, sarcasm, and wit. And then they would splash in these really sincere moments between the characters that also carried the drama along. It was wonderfully written.
These three scenes were amazing. There reactions to shawn saying he loves Juliet are priceless. Especially Juliets, the small lean forward and then seeing the result and smiling

It's a shame season 8 was a hot mess and when they got together. It randomly happen off screen. Also the episodes I've seen upto felt like they weren't together
this is one of my favorite scenes. Lassie and Shawn dynamic, Gus taking off his name tag thinking its over, Shawn and Jule's relationship, Henry preparing Shawn to be a great detective... LOVE IT
Polygraphs don't work as lie detectors... several criminals have gotten away with murder, simply because they were chill during the questioning. And technically, Shawn's heartrate should've raised a little when he got agitated
You gotta keep in mind how long ago this was tho because back then those were state of the heat for lack of better phrasing on this scene you see the polygraph going crazy when he’s telling lassie he’s been fighting this thing for years because it’s making the needle go crazy but when asked if he’s a psychic he was able to control the environment around him by taking a deep breath which brings the heart rate down hence he’s able to follow through and believe what’s he’s saying , hence at the end is why Lassiter takes a deep breath when he’s telling him he will shoot him because lassie is controlling his heart rate his breathing ect a lot goes into polygraphs and Idk bout the criminal thing lol
Even so the myths behind polygraphs are so publiclly real Florida has multiple instances of you being reqired to answer while under one if the police deem it necsarry and quite a few other states do this as well
No dude is right, polygraphs are utter bullshit that are hit or miss, at best. They are absolutely in no way a reliable form of lie detection, especially with the more vicious and psychopathic subjects. All it does is measure stress.
I literally love how Lassiter describes Shawn at the end with the guessing the right culprit after missing four or five times and then flipping his hair around 😂
Nothing gets me like Lassie telling Shawn he will shoot him repeatedly if he hurts Juliet while hooked up to a polygraph 😂 I love their brother and sister relationship 😭💕
Shawn Rescues Darth Vader was my favorite episode, hands down. A mix of lighthearted moments, an interesting mystery with diplomats, AND a bunch of character defining scenes. If anyone wants to know which episode defines Psych the best, tell them S6:E1
i sub to the theory that henry told chief vick that he wasn’t psychic. she looked nervous that the truth might finally come out and they might lose their best detective 😭
I‘m pretty sure she knew or at the very least heavily suspected from the start, but didn‘t mind because he got results and it gave her an excuse to ignore the highly illegal ways he actually achieved them.
It’s pretty clear that Shawn adores Jules, for one, they hit it off almost immediately, despite Jules being against the idea of dating Shawn they got along really well. And likely the reason that every relationship Shawn was in over the coarse of 6 years failed, was because he clearly loved Juliet. He can be pretty selfish, but it seems that he’s capable and willing to give things up for her and sacrifice anything, considering when he uprooted his life and left behind Gus and Henry to move with Jules. Their relationship is so cute and I think Roday and Lawson had good chemistry when acting together
Easily one of my favorite scenes in the entire show. I love how they saved the flashback part of the episode for an end to show Henry teaching him how to beat the test.
Not only about Shules, this scene is one of Lassie's great displays of affection for Jules, showing how important she is to him and how he cares for her. my heart can't take it 🥺
This series was so perfect. I got my boyfriend hooked and he spent the entirety of December binging it while in quarantine, he has not yet seen the final movie though to wrap it all up
At the end Carlton says "...I'll discharge my pistol." Shawn asks "Are you saying you'll shoot me?" The machine indicates no deception, and Carlton says "Repeatedly." I don't think Carlton would actually murder Shawn. He's too "by the book". Instead, the "repeatedly" was simply a continuation of his previous statement that he will discharge his pistol...repeatedly. He didn't specify under what conditions it would be discharged, or where it would be pointing at the time. Carlton had his own way to defeat the lie detector.
This was one of my favorite scenes and hugest roller coaster of emotion I've had watching a TV series like psych is on a whole other level. I remember going "oh no this is it...what's gonna happen to Shawn not like this" to "OMG HE JUST CONFESSED HIS LOVE TO JULES" to "HELL YEAH HE FOOLED THE MACHINE BUT HOW WAS HE ACTUALLY PSYCHC?! WHAT IM SO HAPPY" golly I miss this show so much Also fun fact, idk if it was intentional but when Henry breathed out saying Shawn had to answer maybe it was a hint to the lesson he gave Shawn back in his childhood about passing a lie detector undercover
And unlike the psychic question he didn't mentally prep himself so you know he meant it. But I get why juliet would later be upset about lying about being psychic when she didn't know about the mental prep.
@@nygma619 Previous mistrust from her brother and father helped with that. Plus, right before the polygraph test started, she was also sure that Shawn had something to do with the murder.
Openly admitting to an intent to commit murder would've backfired on him later. Lassie mentioned Shawn knew how to beat polygraphs; so he knew Shawn was lying about being psychic; and possibly about being the person in the picture. I think that whole "Are you psychic" was a whole thing to out his relationship with Juliet before it got too serious. The ending was Lassie giving into the fact that Shawn and Jules were an item.
This scene really shows just how much it hurts Juliet when she finds out he lied about being a psychic. It means for all she knew he lied about loving her.
Clever move by Shawn to rip the facts to the answers out of context to be able to mention them without a bad conscience and thus keep the stress level low. He was 't lying, he just omitted the context, and that's how you beat the lie detector.
I always liked how Lassiter's relationship with O'Hara evolved through the series. O'Hara always looked up to Lassiter's police enforcement skills and she got to be very skilled in the field. They were both incredibly knowledgeable of the written laws. They couldn't have found two better actors to portray these two with Omundson and Lawson. These two could transition from being on the perifory to front and center of all their scenes so easily.
I love this show so much. My wife and I used to watch it religiously. After it ended, we went back and kept watching it and even watched the movie that came after.
I mean, we gotta respect Lassie’s big bro actions right here. I’ve always kind of thought of Lassie and Jules loosely seeing each other as kind of siblings (Juliet and Shawn’s future kid will absolutely call Lassiter “Uncle Lassie”) and I came to that conclusion after he saved her from the tower in Mr. Yang pt 2 and the hug that I saw as deeper than friendship but in a different way from love
Shawn being honest about loving Jules makes it tragically ironic when later, it will be his lie about being a psychic that almost drives her away from him.
I love how to make sure Shawn took him seriously he turned on the polygraph test so he could see he wasn't lying when he said he would shoot him if he hurt her.
I love that Lassie not only makes sure Shawn knows that he'll dump an entire round of his pistol into him if Shawn hurts Jules, but also decides to be the bigger man by not trying to get revenge for Shawn getting his previous partner/ex transferred.
Shawn dad knew he was going to beat the test when he was in control, but peaked when Shawn emotionally said he loved Jules. I believe the chief knows from Shawn’s dad and Gus’s reaction to the question but ignores it because he is a great “psychic”
Anyone else realize how Henry sighed almost like it was him reminding Shawn what to do. I know that's probably not why but it's cool to think it could have been lol.
Shouldn’t they have known he was lying/test was bogus when he was able to “truthfully” say that he was legless? Or like recognize that he can trick the machine? I love this scene but that’s what bothered me most about this part. They should’ve all dismissed it and saw it was him tricking the detector with that statement.
@@jamiethon9441 pretty sure that's basic joke they evening the show. Shawn says some incorrect. Gus tells him that's not correct. Shawn tells him he's not correct.
I watched the whole season again and when I watched this one and he said he is psychic and there was no deception I was like ok so Juliet got mad at Shawn for lying and I would be to but I would also be surprised cause he was on a lie detector and he lied
My wife pointed out at that when Lassie was first hooking himself up to the lie detector he stated "A girl I really liked by the way" however at 6:07 we see his early lie detector results.....doesn't seem the truth to me, lol.
I think Vick knew all along, but Shawn gets results. The trouble of keeping him is less than the good he does in catching criminals. If she admits to knowing the truth, she can't use him anymore, because he does things police aren't allowed to do. Such as snooping, breaking and entering, and many other things. She trusts his father, to keep him in line so he doesn't overdo it. I think Henry actually likes that Shawn solves crimes, but wishes he'd have become a policeman like himself rather than doing his whole song and dance to accomplish the same thing. The thing is many people underestimate Shawn because of his antics, allowing him to observe without others noticing. If he was serious all the time many people wouldn't let down their guard. He's unconventional, but he does solve quite a bit of crimes. I still think Lassie and Shawn have better chemistry than Juliet and Shawn. That might just be the actors though.
Could you live without Psych for a week?

Who isn’t?
Or who hasn’t?
That's how I found the show
I wan‘t to watch it, but I can‘t find it anywhere except for the clips on youtube
@@chithewoodfairy try prime video
I love this show so much. My wife and I used to watch it religiously. After it ended, we went back and kept watching it and even watched the movie that came after.
That scene was the most stressful scene of the season. I was soooo stressed.
I LOVE THIS SHOW
This will never get old!
Three of my favorite Psych moments, all with the polygraph.
This was one of my favorite episodes along with the Halloween episode of the girl jumping out of the window
This is one of my favorite scenes of the show.
I realize how Henry had to exhale to remind Shawn what to do
okay, seriously, I can't live without this show haha! I watch it every week consistently!
my favorite scene of ALL time. bloody hilarious yet so heart warming.
Use me as your "we need more PSYCH MOREEE" button
I love that Lassie not only makes sure Shawn knows that he'll dump an entire round of his pistol into him if Shawn hurts Jules, but also decides to be the bigger man by not trying to get revenge for Shawn getting his previous partner/ex transferred.
Him fooling the lie detector is awesome.
Psych is one of the best shows ever. I think it's underrated.
I know that's probably not why but it's cool to think it could have been lol.
i love this show so much i wish there was another season
Shouldn’t they have known he was lying/test was bogus when he was able to “truthfully” say that he was legless? Or like recognize that he can trick the machine? I love this scene but that’s what bothered me most about this part. They should’ve all dismissed it and saw it was him tricking the detector with that statement.
He believed it so that's all ok :-)
And the fact that his closest friend switched his badge because he knew hes not psychic
He can't speak Spanish. He thought that he said that he was psychic. Technically, not a lie.
Nick Knife but then argued that gus was legless. Obviously not true
@@jamiethon9441 pretty sure that's basic joke they evening the show.
Shawn says some incorrect.
Gus tells him that's not correct.
Shawn tells him he's not correct.
I've watched all seasons about a 100 times still can't get enough
The 16 dislikes are from the followers of Mr. Yin!!
I watched the whole season again and when I watched this one and he said he is psychic and there was no deception I was like ok so Juliet got mad at Shawn for lying and I would be to but I would also be surprised cause he was on a lie detector and he lied
The moment Shawn Spencer went god mode
Juliet and Shawn are the best tv couple of all time. Their chemistry in acting is unreal.
I wonder if twisting the facts acctually works on a real polygraph. "We talked a little Star Wars"
Love show. One of the best that ever was on TV.
That ending though was the best shovel speech ever!
Bro that end part with lassie, so doing that to my kids’ significant others
Shawn's goodbye to Lassie is one of my favorite moments, but this is definitely a close second
This is the best scene in the whole show
My wife pointed out at that when Lassie was first hooking himself up to the lie detector he stated "A girl I really liked by the way" however at 6:07 we see his early lie detector results.....doesn't seem the truth to me, lol.
My only issue, Juliet didn’t say it back
His taught how to lie best dad in history
I love the music it's so intense when he says yes
