It cost him a medal when he saved Natalie from a grenade thrown into her house. Another case had someone tried to exploit this when he was lured to Mexico.
I always loved how he was willing to stand in front of a moving plane, with soldiers pointing guns at him and he doesn't flinch or move. That's courage
If courage really is defined as "being afraid of something but doing it anyway" (and I agree with that definition), then Monk is the most courageous character to ever grace the TV screen.
Which is why the astronaut at the end of the clip acknowledged Monk with a respectful look and head nod. It wasn't a "you got me" acknowledgement but a well done because he knew about Monk's mental issues and the fucker figured him out and then ran down stood in front of a taxiing fighter plane to catch him despite his phobias, and this was after he called Monk out for his leave of absence.
I thought the exact same thing. Being brave isn't the lack of fear, it's going against your fears that makes you brave. So it's BECAUSE of Monk's many phobias that makes him a truly brave man. (Kinda ironic, isn't it?😄)
As a Vietnam vet I can guarantee you everyone is afraid, remember Band of Brothers and how they always talked about how afraid they were constantly,? And how peaceful a guy looked when they got killed.
It was one of the greatest things about the show. Despite his fears and compulsions, when all else failed, Monk was able to overcome any of his fears for the sake of catching criminals. It was like all else was lost to him but the desire to bring justice to the wicked.
There's a touching scene in this episode that seems to be missing in the clips. It's the therapy session between Monk and Dr. Kroger. Monk is rambling on about this astronaut, everything he is that Monk thinks he wants to be. Finishes up by saying that Wagner is fearless. Finally Dr. Kroger speaks: "well Adrian if he's guilty I know one thing he's afraid of......you."
I'm watching that episode right now... I feel bad for Monk. He says to Dr. Kruger "I'm so tired of being afraid." And whilst it's true that he's afraid of a lot of things that the average person isn't afraid of... he's risked his life to save people he cares about more than once. He's saved both Natalie and Sharona many times - jumped into danger without hesitation. I think he saved Julie once, too - the wedding with the killer bride. When she pulled out the knife and attacked her husband, he shoved Julie behind him to keep her safe. He's braver than he thinks he is. The people he loves knows that he loves them because of that. He can be rude and selfish and exasperating... but they know he loves them because he won't hesitate for even one second to jump into danger to save them.
I like how that one guy just steps into frame just to say he's tampering with the missiles then steps out of frame AND IS NEVER SEEN AGAIN. Just lets Monk continue about their business.
The idea of a man with so many fears standing strong for what's right just hits me right in the feels. There are so many episodes that highlight Monk is the bravest man around. After all...to have so many life altering phobias and keep pushing forward? That takes a crazy amount of guts.

@Dawn of the Dad actually no. If something happened to the doll and someone found the remote control while fixing it, game, set, and match. Maybe not today, probably not tomorrow, but someone would've found it eventually.
I always had two thoughts about this bit, and yes, I know it's just a tv show. First, Monk is an unescorted civilian with a history of psychological problems - Wagner could've rolled right over him, reported a bump, then took off to dump the doll. Without the doll, there was no case against him and at worst he would probably sail right through any kind of investigation over Monk's "accidental" death. Second... Monk not swatting at those laser dots on his chests (knowing full well he could be shot for moving) must've taken AMAZING self-control given his OCD.

Didn't even need to go that far. Soon as Wagner met the little girl with the doll he could have just asked to see it, handled it, invalidating the fingerprint evidence and resuming his career safe in his knowledge that no jury will convinct him.
"It's like a 30 million dollar video game." Even back then, that would be a typical budget for a AAA title. On another note, running in front of a jet intake is ill advised. There's a pretty gruesome thing that can happen.

"See? You flinched. See, you're a flincher. You'll never stop me, because when the chips are down, when it really counts, you are always gonna flinch." And yet, he doesn't flinch. He stands his ground when it matters.

Anyone else would have crapped their pants with a jet in front of them and a load of soldiers pointing their guns toward you. Not monk. Not only because he’s got courage up the wazoo but also the fact that his obsessive compulsions for clean wouldn’t allow him to do that to his pants
Man I wish I had a remote that worked from inside a doll inside a box after 2 days from like 10 meters away... Mine barely even works when I directly point it at the thing!
You have a choice between life in prison or life on the run. You're already in an aircraft that can give you a 1800 mile head start, but you have no preparations beyond that. All you have to do is run down the PI stood in front of you. I'd take my chances on the run.
My thought was that you either commit a murder in front of a bunch of military personnel, or take your chance in court that the evidence you tried to smuggle away wouldn't be enough to convict. If he were to fly away in that jet, things would be a lot more complicated and potentially life-ending.
But now you've also stolen a military jet prototype. You're an international weapons smuggler and immediately become one of the most hunted men in the world. You can't refuel the jet, and this is only a test flight so it probably doesn't have enough to go all that far. Where could you possibly land that jet without being instantly recognized and arrested?
Love the Monk series! Here... I just wonder... if Wagner had opened the doll in cockpit... (or anywhere at the airport for that matter) and took the remote controler out... it would be over and totally safe for him. To have garage controler and doll separate and you can easily justify your fingerprints on it. No judge would put you behind bars for murder because of this evidence and possible explanation... so to try to get rid of the doll with remote still inside was the worst idea actually. Anyway... movie. Great episode though.
Thanks to the bad neighbour Monk can solve the crime. If he was a good neighbour and didn't steal from her porch Wagner would've got away. Now everytime I rewatch Monk (again) I always wonder what if Monk wasn't there, all those murderers would've got away forever.

Monk was too Awesome to not continue for more episodes. He deserves a second chance
I wouldn't say no to having more episodes of this series but I think it concluded well enough as it is.
@@Tim7318-3 how about a tv movie?
I doubt Ted Levine, at least, is still in the biz.
Anyone else would have crapped their pants with a jet in front of them and a load of soldiers pointing their guns toward you. Not monk. Not only because he’s got courage up the wazoo but also the fact that his obsessive compulsions for clean wouldn’t allow him to do that to his pants
"My name is michael westin and I use to be a Spy but then I was caught by Mister Monk the super detective "
This episode is one of my favorites that comes around full circle for monk, man y many great episodes, but this is one of my favorites.
So that's why he got his Burn Notice...
C'mon someone had to make that joke.
So this is how Michael Westen got that burn notice on him.
This is my favorite episode. I always get teary eyed with this ending.
Charlie's looking all grown up, but what the hell happened to Gabe?
a p “I understood that reference”
Eric Allan Kramer looks so different than when he did on good luck charlie
Which movie/tv show is that?
My name is Michael Weston. I used to be an Astronaut.
Man I wish I had a remote that worked from inside a doll inside a box after 2 days from like 10 meters away... Mine barely even works when I directly point it at the thing!
He used to be an astronaut until.....
You have a choice between life in prison or life on the run. You're already in an aircraft that can give you a 1800 mile head start, but you have no preparations beyond that. All you have to do is run down the PI stood in front of you.
I'd take my chances on the run.
That is one way to look at it
My thought was that you either commit a murder in front of a bunch of military personnel, or take your chance in court that the evidence you tried to smuggle away wouldn't be enough to convict.
@@jameshill2450 Mexico, non extradition country. Sell it to the cartel, spend a lifetime on the beach drinking margaritas
Paul g lifetime? More like 3 days before they track you down and the cartel members sell you out.
He could have removed the transmitter while Monk standing in front.
One of the best scenes of the series. And I've seen every episode.
"It's like an epidemic" - everybody in 2020
Why deliver a doll when you can just have a timer activated mechanism.
I love how, not only is Monk standing in front of an active jet, but he has the balls to wipe the tip off with it right in his face😄
One of Monk's bravest moments.
"What are you doing?"
**slowly picks up missile head**
"...I don't know!"
He was so impressed by Monk, after he got out of jail he went to Miami and started a P.I agency as burned CIA agent.
Monk out smarts Michael Weston
"some of these planes are trainers...the most advanced trainers ever built..."
"They're handling the missiles!"
*leaves*
One of the rare suspect that doesn't go on a murder spree to cover up his initial crime.
The definition of courage: being afraid of something and facing it.
I always thought at the end Monk should have said.."You blinked" to the astronaut.
Though he was a murderer, I think that pilot could have a career as a spy.
Dude had a jet and said na
Monk had some balls doing that.
Wow.
They somehow got a real F-22 Raptor for a TV show.
Impressive... most impressive.
As an RAF NCO, I'll tell you this for nothing; the USAAF LOVES to show off their new toys!
My name is Michael Westin and I’ve been Monk’d
>kind of like a 30 million dollar video game
Wow, back when that was a number that would've sounded OUTRAGEOUS for game development.
And that's how Michael Westen got his name changed and burned.
Thanks to the bad neighbour Monk can solve the crime. If he was a good neighbour and didn't steal from her porch Wagner would've got away. Now everytime I rewatch Monk (again) I always wonder what if Monk wasn't there, all those murderers would've got away forever.
The OG porch pirate!
@@lenawagenfuehr53 It's perishable so it's okay if he steals it....NOT! Haha
That astronaut actor was so cheesy😂
That’s Michael Westen, pal.
Plot twist: that was actually michael undercover and was later sent to Nigeria by dead larry, BEFORE he received his burn notice
"Then STOP ME for the love of God" 🤣
Of course, the astronaut did it! The guy had a "Burn Notice".
Monk, the man with many phobias, puts them all aside to solve the case.
Monk and Burn Notice, my 2 favorite shows
