This one is perfect! It's cheap. It's ingredients are available year round and most importantly it tastes so good. Because of that I've translated the recipe below so that you can make it at home.
    Ingredients:
    filling:
    russet potatoes, 2 pounds
half of a white or yellow onion
butter, the size of an egg
    salt & pepper, to taste
    2 tablespoons of water
crust (if you want to make your own):
    half a pound of butter
    1 egg
    2.5 cups of flour
water, no measurement, just add till you form a dough
    Directions:
crust: combine your flour with cold butter that has been cut into small cubes. Work into your flour with either your hands or a knife and fork until it forms small beads the size of peas throughout. Add an egg. Slowly add water till you have formed a dough that is not too dry nor too sticky. Roll into a ball then cut in half. Roll out your first ball of dough thin and cut into wide strips. Place these around the rim of a pie plate. Do not put any paste at the bottom of your pie plate. Once the plate is filled with the potato/onion filling you will then add your top crust. Use your 2nd ball of dough to form the top crust, you will most likely have some left over which you can save for another project. Cut off any excess dough then roll and tuck the top crust. Cut a small hole in the center of the top. Pour in 2 tablespoons of water before replacing the plug. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1.5 hours. Rub butter on the top in the last 20 minutes of baking if you wish for your crust to be a golden brown.
Filling: wash then peel your potatoes. Cut thin into disks. Slice half of an onion thin. In a pie paste that has been lined with pie paste put down a layer of potatoes, then a layer of onions, and sprinkle a generous amount of salt & pepper. Repeat this until you've used up your ingredients. Finish the top with more salt and pepper then dot blobs of butter all over. Cover with your pie paste. Remember to pour in 2 tablespoons of water before baking.

Please watch the channel Anti Chef, give one of his Julia Child recipe vids a watch, i don’t cook one iota, but I was INSTANTLY enamored with his video styles, he’s like the common person in the kitchen, just trying to decipher these complicated ass Julia child recipes, he shows his mistakes, his confusion, the messes, it’s just so real. And I’m veryyy picky about which channels I watch a lot of and I have seen every one of his videos

This is one of our local dishes in Lancashire in England. We call it "butter pie", or "Catholic pie" because it's what the Catholics would eat on Fridays (when we abstain from meat). I grew up on it! We eat it with pickled red cabbage that stains the pastry pink. It's funny how many different places find different things to do with cheap, basic ingredients.

In these tough times, to demonstrate a recipe that is both economical and delicious is a real service to everyone. I love the potatoes and I personally like the skin left on. They taste great and are full of vitamins. On top of that, it saves time/ effort, and you don’t have to throw any more food away. I know that isn’t for everyone, and is not the recipe, but you can always try to modify anything. Thank you once again…!! 👏👏👏👏👏

My godmother from Lancashire in the Uk made this. It was a staple for poor families in the first part of the 20th century. She layered the potato between each layer she put butter, salting and peppering as she went. No onion . The poorer they were the less butter!! King Edward potatoes which were a floury potato was best. Cooked in the side oven to the coal range. Later she made it in a normal oven but it tasted different!

My paternal grandmother (Scot/Swiss ancestry) made this potato pie when I was a very young child, early 1950's. I never knew what or how she made it as she passed away shortly after. I knew it had a top crust, and maybe she did it with the circular crust as you have shown for the bottom. Your videos fascinate me and I love to see you making receipts from years ago. This pie has been being made in Preston, Lancashire, England since the 1700's and is traditionally known as Butter Pie. It was a staple of Catholics who didn't eat meat on Fridays for religious reasons. It was introduced by Irish Catholics who came here looking for work. The only difference from you demonstration is the preparation. The onions are sweated in the pan with butter and white pepper then the thinly chopped potatoes are added and sweated off till almost cooked. Usually no water is added. This enabled the filling to be made in the morning before setting off to work. Then the pie could be made when returning home in the evening and cooked be cooked in about 30 to 40 minutes. The filling was cooked in a pan to save fuel as this pie was usually made by people who were poor. Do you have an idea who first introduced this receipt to America? I wonder if it was Irish immigrants?

I have made potato pie similar to this, it’s fantastic! Love watching you do it the old way! The Dutch oven vessel you bake in has me very envious lol
My recipe asked to cut the top of the pie off after baking and drizzle a little heavy cream over it then replace the top.

I made this for dinner tonight. I added shredded cheddar and some bacon. My husband loved it!

I am going to make this potato onion pie this weekend when my family comes to visit. You made it sound so good. I will roast a chicken to go with it. Thanks for the recipe.:)

My mother used to do this, minus the crust. In a casserole dish, with a dash of milk 😊. Cover with foil, and cook until tender. Remove foil, slice eckrich sausage on top. Return to oven and warm through. Grate cheese on top.
    So Good

That is interesting that the crust has egg in it. Most modern pie crusts don't.

I have no idea how the cooks at this time did not burn the backs of their hands putting baking places inside hot cast iron. I am truly amazed at the skill cooking/baking took at this time.
