fashion got sooo much easier once i realized that not everyone has the same version of "timeless" pieces. i would buy all these plain white t-shirts and minimalist clothes because OG youtubers said to. i had to accept that i hate white t-shirts! i hate dressing minimalist! i would rather dress like i'm stuck in 1969. so for me the waist coat & flare legging trends are pretty timeless haha

I think cowboy boots, outside of the US, are often looked at as tacky. It is not in european culture, and the only time I ever see them worn is with a halloween costume (cowboy). The cowboy boots are perceived diffrently in the US compared to Europe, and have different meaning and association. And that's okay. It's just something to keep in mind, I guess.

I think “trend” vs “timeless” all depends on your style. If you pull an outfit straight from Instagram influencers and urban outfitters catalogs - you’re most likely going to look like a trend wearer. But if you curate your own style and add little touches that make your outfits unique to you, even if they include items that are “trendy” - it will end up looking timeless because you’re not just copying and pasting a look. A good example is the tennis skirt trend - if you just wear a tennis skirt, a vest and Air Force ones - you’re going to look like every other girl. But if you switch up the top, shoes and add accessories - you’re going to look unique! This is the mindest I use when creating my style.

I think the waist coat is indeed a timeless piece, maybe not everyone will wear it but is a staple of gender non conforming people, tomboys, and the androgynous style. Keeping in mind that fashion is a cycle, everything is timeless if you style it for you. I got some clothes from my mom from the y2k that i can wear as trends right now, including shoulder bags and corsets. Same with flared jeans, they were the rage 10+ years ago and also now. It's just about understanding how the cycles work and which pieces you love the most.

it's funny how trendy vs timeless change from a country to another. i live in france and shoulder bag and claw clips for instance are pieces that i've been seeing forever here. even if it's trendy now, it's not something that i'll stop wearing and seeing because it was never a trend to begin with in france. it's timeless here. however the cowboy boots are obviously trendy (and even if it is, i'm not seeing them a lot in france) so it will never be a timeless piece here.

For me buying second hand really made me start analysing pieces better and thinking 'hmm do I actually like this?', often because the pieces were never exactly like the things I had seen on other people - even if they were 'trends' they were a different version of them (simply based on what I was able to find lol). Over time I think Ive naturally trained myself to be able to immediately clock if something about a piece - whether thats cut, colour/tone, small details etc. - that draw me to it/against it.

I think it’s funny that the ”youths” call any jeans below the belly button a low waist jean, haha… (I’m not that old, I’m 26) mid rise is defo not a trend piece, it has been the normal for long time periods and will always be a classic as you say. I feel like I get a really long butt when I wear too high rise.
For flared I think the bootcut might go in and out of style, however I think the straight fit or slightly wide fit will be more timeless.

Hi! I just want to let you know that gold was the classic choice before the late 90s and 2000s! My mom and all of her friends, as well as my grandmother have told me that silver came in to fashion in the 90s and was a trendy color for jewelry! Gold is back now, but silver stayed for about 15 years and became a classic staple. At least for 9/10 of the 20th century gold was the classic choice. :)

I think ppl should think about when you judged things in the past because they weren't "trendy" (ex. when you talked about shoulder bags vs cross body bags or the yoga pant) you should think about whether or not you made fun of ppl for still wearing that years ago because of trends or not. The only reason you didn't like it was because it was out of trend most likely, especially when we were young teenagers. I get confused by the trendy vs timeless debate because you see trends cycle in and out over time, Audrey Hepburn wore skinny pants/skinny jeans (pedal pushers I think they were called back in the day?) for example. Sweater vests/vest is general it's the same thing. Loafers even in hs for me in like 2014 were trendy bc of like the Tumblr, American apparel, academia aesthetic, even in the early 2000s too with gossip girl popularity etc this trend has not even gone out of style at all since like the invention, like 90s have loafer/derby shoes, the 80s and so on, every decade pretty much. So technically any trend is considered timeless tbh, they are all recycling back and through the years. I think people in fashion get really down on people (mostly teens) for following trendy clothing ideas because it will go out of style, which is just not the case, everything comes back. They just think too short term when it comes to trends and it is classist in a way bc by the time the trend trickles down to an affordable bracket its "out of trend" ...

I never really make comments but I felt like I just had to tell you how much I love your videos Laini!! Especially the direction you’ve chosen with the content you’re putting out lately.
With some other fashion content creators (as much as I love them), I always feel compulsed to dress a certain way or to buy this specific item. And it turns into a constant loop where I feel bad because I’m unable to attain that look or I feel like I’m just impersonating someone else. I’m really not trying to draw comparisons but there’s none of that shame when I watch your videos; rather I feel uplifted? If that makes sense 😅
You’ve really inspired me to work on developing a sense of style thay feels true to me. Now I hardly care about what’s ‘outdated’ or ‘in trend’ :)) This turned so long, you might not even read this but ily and I’m always looking forward to ur videos Laini !!

Some of these trends, latinx or chicanos/as wear and have been wearing. Like them cowboy boots or flared/ bootcut jeans and it's like it's hard for us to see them out of style because we'll even wear them to school.

i love these videos so much and hearing different opinions it’s so fun
okay my opinion: waist coat is timeless
i started to wear them before they were “trendy” or like peak popularity like they are now bc i wanted to get the look of julia roberts old style. i feel like they always looked very timeless with her

i think that the trendy vs timeless debate depends on the country and the zone you're in like for example cowboy boots, when she said that ""you'll never look at someone wearing cowboy boots and think you look stupid" it kinda just from an American perspective because where i'm from in North Africa if you dare wear them outside you'll get made fun of for the rest of your life (Algerians and bullying lol) and same thing with baggy pants they're not seen as "trendy" because it's associated with traditional clothing or with homeless people so you either pull it off or again get bullied for the rest of your life but as i said it really depends on the culture of the place you're in

I agree with a lot that you said. Im cleaning out my closet as im watching this video haha but I find it hard to let go of some of the old trendy clothes I have from years ago but I never wear anymore now. As I got older I def have been getting more timeless clothes and buy one of two trendy pieces here and there

  • @grace1275

    For me, I have sorts of 2 types of clothes, ones that are fashionable and ones I wear just because I have to. I usually wear leggings all the time when I’m not at school and if I’m doing sports or working. Same for school clothes I kind of have a uniform but occasionally I like to buy more trendy stuff like those big cardigans that were popular early this year, most of my clothes are 2 or 3 years old so are kind of on the cusp of going out of style, but I still like to wear them anyway. I don’t tend to buy trendy things that much (like that dark brown colour, waistcoats, body con etc ) but I still think that if you style something right, no matter when you bought it, it can look good. I absolutely love flared pants (being tall);

Firstly, love this and the pieces that you talked about. 🥰
Secondly, whenever you style your loafers in your videos my mom talks about how she had them when she was younger. And now I want to buy myself a pair and randomly surprise her with them! 😂

Gold jewelry definitely dominated the early 90’s too because my moms wedding band was gold. It’s easy to see why gold started to trend again when the 20 year cycle brought them back…plus I like gold so I’m totally ok with it

I’m so bummed to miss the sweater vest/waistcoat trend cause I’m breastfeeding and that provides no access to my sweater meats when they’re demanded. I’m hoping they’re in style in a couple years when I’m done 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I also remember when cuffing you pants was a big no no, you wouldnt be caught dead rolling up your pants. And high socks, you would be bullied beyond belief if you saw any sock, you had to wear your socks so low that it looks like you werent even wearing them. I also remember when wearing jean jackets was also cringey for a bit of time.

I love the claw clips. I wear my mom's, which is over 30 years old. Overall I think all these 'trends' have been around years ago and I simply re-wear them. Gives me a nostalgic feeling, and I like those things better than new stuff from i.e. Zara
