Like when I first saw the trailer I assumed "Oh they just upscaled the textures and changed the lighting". It was only after seeing a direct comparison that I realized how pretty much every model has been remade from the ground up.
At first I was really disappointed they didn't do the whole trilogy pack, but now that I see how much work they put into it get why. And I really hope they give the other 2 the same treatment
I'm still disappointed, mainly because the Wii U eshop will be closing in March, so, very soon, there won't be an official way for people to buy Prime 2 or 3 if they haven't already.
I really do hope a Metroid Prime 2 re-release gets the same treatment. The Sanctuary Fortress area would probably be jaw-dropping at this level of quality.
I think the problem with 2 Remastered is the amount of assets that would need to be touched up. Two whole worlds, light & dark, and just one of them (sanctuary) would be a huuuge task. Not that I don't want it, I absolutely do! but I can see why they'd be hesitant, especially while working on MP4
88 on Metacritic for Metroid Dread and a 94 for the Prime Remaster is quickly turning Metroid into one of Nintendos most well reviewed series. Stuff like that can't be ignored. I hope MercurySteam can go all out on something like a Fusion Remake or Metroid 6 and Prime 2 and 3 do get the same treatment Prime 1 got.
Honestly I couldn't be happier to see them getting love again after all these years. Especially dread. I'm not a fan of the prime series but dread scratched an itch that was well over due. Hopefully Nintendoo what nintendon't and give the series more consistent love.
As an huge Metroid fan, I couldn't be any happier. Let's hope Prime 2 & 3 get the same treatment as Prime 1 has. Or at the very least, ported into the console. And whenever Prime 4 comes, it can look exactly like Prime 1. And hey. I'll be down for an Metroid 6 or Fusion remake.
@@KaiSchSp They'll continue to ignore it, that isn't anything new. Metroid has always reviewed well, and Nintendo has always neglected it and always will because it underperforms in Japan. It was never a rational decision to begin with, why would this change it?
Nerrel does the best Richard Leadbeater parody impression ever. I wish to see more of this in future videos. That Skyward Sword HD tech review in Richard's impression was also equally hilarious.
Yeah I was confused by the non-lock-on comment in his video as the gyro / dual-stick combo includes lock-on (and feels good to have it as an option). But if he was trying to find the lock from too low it makes more sense!
He is literally doing it from where he is supposed to. Even FROM the appropriate ledge, the hitbox is absolutely minute. The trick to fix it is to turn off Free-Lock, which is usually off by default for all control options, anyway.
You’re wrong, you go back and get the space boots with the boost ball and then you can double jump to the edge up top, shooting it from down there works but it’s not “literally how it’s supposed to be done”
I was worried about what Nerrel meant by this when I was playing the Remastered yesterday, and I shot one rocket and the stalactite just fell. I was like "Huh? Thought that would be harder from what Nerrel said".
It reminds me of early prerendered cutscenes. Moreso the PS360 and Wii era ones. Like seeing the scene of Ridley in the Frigate is a lot like seeing Mother Brain's fight in the beginning cutscene of Other M. I think its a great fit for Metroid considering they couldn't go for a more realistic one, as its a good mix of realism and maybe Zero Mission's comic book aesthetic. That said, its a bit too dark in places, like the lighting casts too dark a shadowed contrast. Its a minor thing, and more a problem with all graphics engines nowadays it seems. it's more a pet peeve of mine, so not a big issue.
@@GBDupree i agree that it reminds me of late 90s early 2000s cgi. Especially in that corridor just before the area where you fight the Hive Mecha, with all those flying bugs who emit light. The saturated yellow lighting that covers surprisingly well the environments really made me think i was inside a playable CGI from the era.
I'll be pretty heartbroken if we don't at least get a Prime 2 remastered. Have you ever looked at its concept art? Prime 2 has so much potential in a visual upgrade as massive as Prime 1's remaster. I'd absolutely love a Prime 3 remaster too if nintendo could be convinced, I love the look of the new Phazon, so I'm absolutely stoked to think of how Phaaze would look. Also I want to see Skytown upgraded, it already looked incredible in the original, but just imagine how it could look in a remaster.
Agreed, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes was amazing follow up, it deserves the same treatment, you can't just give Prime 1 all the credit. edit: Not to mention its Dark Samus's debut, and the artwork that can be realized would be so awesome.
Prime 2 definitely needs the remaster treatment. Dark Aether sometimes looks a bit too drab IMO and I think giving it the Prime 1 remaster treatment would help it a lot.
I love Prime 2, so I really want it to get remastered and not just ported. However, I do think if they do remaster it, they should be allowed to change up some things. While I love the environments of 2, I find that Agon Wastes (the first area besides the "hub") is a bit too drab and plain, and I think the game isn't as focused on atmospheric touches like the first. The First Prime really pulls you into the world more to me with environmental detail and interactions, though 2 is no slouch either. Agon Wastes is neat as this desert like environment, but it doesn't really have enough of a visual identity compared to the rest, especially as the Dark versions of every area feel so similar, and even the hub area (whatever its called) can be confused as the same area. As the first major area it doesn't give a great first impression to the game. Though they better keep Torvus Bog as beautiful as it was before and not botch it, I know rain tends to be hardware intensive, so most games don't do heavy rain anymore. I also hope they actually give you a chance to collect the Temple keys ahead of time instead of locking it until the very end. As its even worse than Prime 1 (which has a lot that can be collected earlier, and even some that can be done with some speedrun tricks earlier as well). As someone who actually likes the key hunting to some extent, even I can't really justify Prime 2's key hunt.
its crazy how nintendo news sites had been constantly teased “metroid prime remake in works for switch” and then it was just randomly shadowdropped lmao
I laughed way too hard at the DF sendup at the end (especially since I've already watched the actual DF analysis of this game). Oh and the rest of the video was good, too. Well done!
They also removed the black lightning some of the more phazon-concentrated areas had, like the entrance to Phazon Mines, and Impact Crater's red Phazon pits feel lower res compared to the rest of the remaster. Minor nitpicks to an outstanding remaster that I've already beaten 3 times (on top of 10 from the og version)
This is genuinely everything I could've asked for. Blows my mind Metroid is getting treated with so much care after being basically dead for 7 years after Other M's release. I'm having a lot of confidence in how Metroid Prime 4 is gonna turn out, hoping for another space-station section since Frigate Orpheon is such a great level.
Regarding that stalactite you're supposed to destroy with a missile: You're not supposed to hit it from that far down. You're supposed to climb up the room and then grapple over to a ledge, where the auto-lock will immediately target it for you to blow up with a missile. It'll then fall and open up a path to the missile expansion. I suppose if you're speed running or don't want to wait for the grappling hook then you might need to find another way to destroy it from below, but that's the intended method at least. Love all your videos!
I really like the updated art style because it kind of bridges the gap between metroid primes hyper realism and the main series slightly simpler comic book look seen in dread that i think fits metroid a lot more while still keeping the spirit of metroid prime that fans love intact
My issue with the charge shot is that you used to be able to chain partial charge shots, which I thought was really nice. I would like having to fire a few shots before charging to be an option I can toggle.
i just dont really get it. there were never really times where spamming normal shots was a good idea, at least not after getting charge beam, which is about 1 hour into the game after planetfall. it presented as a challenge when i could no longer keep some wave beam-weak enemies in perpetual stun, like the wave pirates and security drones. this made me have to do more strafe dancing than usual. i feel like i could deal with chozo ghosts a lot faster with partial charges if i had them too. none of this ruined the game, just made me wish for a toggle.
I don't think you could do that on the original GC release but it was already in Echoes. I miss it and the triple shot makes it kinda worse. I appreciate the attempt, especially with the power beam as that one could fire about as quick as you could spam the button but I think the implementation just kinda sucks. I'm the kind of player who tends to go from charge shot to charge shot and now there's the awkward in-betweener which has now tripled since the original. But if you want to fire as quickly as possible and make use of this feature you can't intuitively spam the button but instead need to keep repeatedly keep holding it and release it. I think I understand what they were going for: -You don't have to spam the button as much to shoot quickly. -There's no "interpretation" of your inputs where the game tries to figure out if you intend to rapid fire based on button spamming and then just put the weapon to "rapid fire mode." Like you'll never shoot when you don't press the button and always shoot if you tap it (as the rate of fire allows it.) -You can still get from pressing the button to a full charge shot just as fast (for the power beam at least) so it can't be considered a downgrade in anyway. ...but it just doesn't feel that good. It hasn't impacted my play experience much but it's a pretty odd inclusion and I miss the option to turn it off.
I'm really hoping the sales and reception from Metroid Prime Remastered convinces Nintendo to give us remastered versions of Prime 2 and 3. What surprised me about this remaster is that it not only includes updated dual analog controls, but also options for the classic tank controls and Wii pointer controls. They went the extra mile to make this the definitive way to experience Metroid Prime.
Does the gyro option include an option to use the left joy-con's gyro, or is it right-gyro only? I ask because I'm left-handed and I played the Prime Trilogy with the Wii remote in my left hand because that made aiming easier.
@@qu1253 I see. Thank you for the information. So, alongside Mario Galaxy, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, and Skyward Sword HD among others, this is yet another Switch port/remaster that forces the player to play right-handed if they want to use the motion controls. When will Nintendo learn?
I haven't played the original but when I was playing the Remastered, every time I turned a corner, I'd be like "God, this game looks so friggen good!" and, like, I own a powerful gaming PC, I shouldn't be this easy to please. Yet, this game's awesome art style plus really great lighting direction just makes it look so aesthetically pleasing! I am in awe and this definitely is an amazing Remaster imo.
I love when Nerrel partners with Digital Foundry. It’s an admittedly strange arrangement, but it means I only have to watch one video! What a timesaver!
I'm starting to think someone at Nintendo just wants more Nerrel videos and that's what's bringing all this goodness to the table of late - and hey, carry on fellas~
I think the thermal visor was purposefully made to be blurry to emulate footage from actual thermal vision that you sometimes see. But yeah, it ended up just being kind of a nuisance, especially when fighting robotic enemies in the dark. Because they don’t show up on the visor very well because they don’t give heat, and it’s so blurry you can’t make them out, so you switch to combat visor but the lights are off.
I thought it was trying to mimic how the original would've looked on a really old CRT, but even then I think they overdid it. It needs NO motion blur at the very least to be actually usable. And maybe a few other things to make it more pleasant to look at. Its to the point that people are actively trying not to use it, and that makes it harder for people who are playing for the first time to progress properly. And it used to be a cool visor to use just to see how everything looks, but now its not worth it, and that's a hit to the atmosphere of the game.
One thing that gets on my nerves is that the X-Ray Visor was _already_ really hard to use and made things super-blurry, so now two of the special visors are going to be a massive headache. It seems like this change would turn the lower Phazon Mines into an unending nightmare of eye strain.
@@GBDupree I don't remember the original looking like this even on a 14" RF input only (you should put the N64 cable lmao) CRT TV. At least they can update these days.
I am one of the contrarian weirdos that loves Prime 2 the most. Not remastering it like this would be so disappointing for me. It has such impressive art design. It feels like such a natural creepy bug world on Aether.
I'm probably the most contrarian of them all when I say that each game has unique strengths and weaknesses and that they are best-enjoyed as a bundle. Hopefully they remaster 2 and 3 in a way that encourages getting them as a bundle (like how Fire Emblem Fates had it that, whichever version you bought at full price, the other would be half-price on the 3DS eshop).
that's not the point though, the point is that even when aiming directly at that spot it still won't hit properly. Its such a tiny hitbox that the rest of the stalactite will likely block it. It seems intentionally designed so that you can only hit it when using the lock on. This has always been the case so even on Wii where you tend to manually aim at everything you still end up having to lock onto that Stalactite anyways. What Nerrel is asking for would be to make the hitbox more generous so that this game would never require lock on if you didn't want to use it (perhaps as a challenge?). Personally, I can't remember any other points in the game where a hitbox was so tedious, but I do remember those stalactites very much because they always stuck out for that reason.
@@Hysteria98 except someone new to the game may not be aware that that is the solution or the cause of the problem. Especially if they are someone using the default dual stick controls and not locking on because that's how they are used to playing FPS games. They, due to lack of knowledge, may think that the stalactites don't break from missiles and that they need a new upgrade to do that and may get stuck. It's not a good thing to leave for that reason. You really shouldn't need to change control options to activate something necessary for progress.
6:50 Holding the reset camera button during lock-on effectively disables the free aim, making it easy to hit those stalactites. I wish it were mentioned in-game, but it's a decent workaround, nonetheless. Great video, btw.
I put this in my "heart warming" playlist because something good happening to an old fan of an until recently unloved franchise is magic. I'm glad you're happy, and that you saw the day the remaster became true
Maybe I'm just remembering wrong, but the duration of the toxic gas left behind by mushroom caps and puffers seems greatly reduced in the Remastered, which is actually a positive because it means you don't have to wait around nearly as long for it to disperse.
The item marker thing is a good idea. they could just have made it a toggle-option in the menu and nobody would have complained. And regarding the stalaktite: I thought I was the only one 😂 I couldn't hit that thing forever lol
I just finished it yesterday and I am debating about going back for a Hard Mode Run. I’m surprised how my muscle memory stayed intact over the years as I was able to remember maybe half of the upgrade locations. Also thank Iwata they improved the scan rate so you can get the Ice Skriekbat in Phendrana without needing a second play through.
I was waiting for Nerrel to release a video about Metroid Prime Remastered but I did not expect him to be so goddamn fast about it. The bullet magnetism shown at 4:32 is also present in the original GameCube release when using Free Aim. It is best seen when aiming at stationary Shriekbats.
@jarlwhiterun7478 Yeah, shadow dropped (then) 20 days ago Just shows Nerrel immediately got to work on the video, and released it less than a month after release That's pretty quick with how much Nerrel goes into detail with MPR
The only nitpick I can really come up with (besides the doors and lack of dynamic lighting) is that I'm not a big fan of the changes made to the Chozo Ruins skybox. In the original it had a orange and green tint to it, an alien overcast sky that helped enhance that feeling of isolation. In the Remaster those colors are gone and its pretty much a bright sunny day. You can see this in the video from 0:25 - 0:29
For me my biggest nitpick is that the arm cannon looks more plastic compared to the original. And i also agree that the Chozo ruins look a bit off... It looks and feels too alive rather than the darker looking atmosphere the original has.
The reports about Prime 2/3 Remastered are conflicting; the Grubb rumor suggest a more basic one, whereas the Belmont rumor suggests them trying to match this one, but they'd be outsourced. We'll see if we get either, but the former would be massively deflating.
I am still blown away at how good MP 2 & 3 look on my Metroid Prime Trilogy disc for my Wii. It would be a shame to to miss out on fighting Emperor Ing, your corrupted friends, & Dark Samus in glorious updated graphics.
A missing effect I haven't seen people talk about much is the Jetpack enemies no longer explode when they hit the ground. I don't own a copy yet, but I've seen some people claim the damage isn't there either, so it might be a bug rather then just a missing visual effect?
Take this with a grain of salt because I haven't played the original, only the remaster. The Jetpack Pirates explode but it's not huge. They can damage you if they explode next to you, so you have to dodge out of the way. Idk if this was in the original, but their death animation is different different depending on what you use to kill them(beam type, missiles, etc.) so they don't always spin out of control. It still looks good, coming from someone who doesn't know how it used to be.
A Poem to Nerrel Nerrel, a name known well To those who love to learn and dwell In the world of gaming and anime With him as guide, we'll never stray His voice, a soothing sound to hear As he talks about what we hold dear With knowledge vast and insights deep He makes even the most complex easy to keep From "The World Ends With You" To "Metroid" and "Mario" too No topic is too niche or small For Nerrel to explain it all His passion for the things he loves Shines bright as stars up above And as we listen to his words We feel our own love take flight like birds So here's to Nerrel, a TH-cam star Whose impact reaches near and far May his channel always thrive and grow And his knowledge continue to flow.
I'm glad you actually tested some of these things in game. The pulse-rifle style firing feels so much more sluggish that I thought it actually WAS slower and wished I could go back. I also never even noticed the bullet magnetism at all, despite having already played it twice.
its really good to see metroid back tbh, didn't play any of the games and yet is a fan, hope one day that others like f_zero get something like metroid did
Like two weeks before this came out, I had beaten the original on GameCube and loved it, so this was pretty cool to see, and I managed to get a physical version of the remaster
You know, ever since the remaster was released I've just been thinking "I can't wait to see Nerrel's video on this." I can finally put those thoughts to rest.
There's something about the original game's graphics that just captivate me more than the remake. I think it's a similar to when you see pixel art in action and your imagination fills in the graphics, but instead of pixel art it's low poly models. The remake doesn't capture that. Also the new art direction reminds me of pikmin 3 Everyone else i've talked to said that the remaster is a 100% upgrade to the original, so I know it's just me. Regardless, i bought the game because despite my dissapointment I'm still having a blast.
It's not just you. I think the remaster did an outstanding job, but in my eyes the original will always be superior. I feel this way about games and remasters/remakes in general - Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Halo 2, etc, etc.
I'm glad that it came out as well as it did! I honestly never expected them to allow this much love and effort to be poured into it! Also always happy to see you and our lord and savior Richard Leadbetter collaborating XD Question though, now that this is released, do you foresee the team making MPHD stopping development? Or do you see them instead trying to upscale the MPR textures instead?
I recently replayed both Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4. These might be the two video games that have aged the most gracefully in all of video gaming history.
I noticed the loss of the reflection effect you mention at 2:48 right away, and it truly hurt my heart. I felt a pang of sadness and loss when I walked up to that mirror.
i honeslty didnt mind the end game scavenger hunt, altho i think it could have been more interesting and making you do more puzzles or just use your knowledge of ur abilities in a cooler way. the final one you grab is by far the coolest to me, giving you the hint of an unseen door clueing you in to use your xray visor. to my knowlege thats the only invisible door i ever saw but it was really cool.
I didn't mind the scavenger hunt too much either, though mainly because I had already found more than half of them before the endgame. The scavenger hunt that was a real pain and annoyance was Prime 2's scavenger hunt.
As one of the five people who bought the trilogy on Wii U, I will be continuing my lifelong practice of watching Nerrel videos while waiting for a bundle
I'm another one of those five people. I only started playing the Metroid series a bit over a year ago, and I started with Super Metroid. I then decided to get the Prime Trilogy on the Wii U for $20 and I had a great time. So, yeah; I'll be waiting for a bundle (and for a left-handed mode for the gyro aim). Speaking of which, anyone else find it a bit suspicious how close the remaster's release was to the day that the Wii U eshop will be closing? Considering how often Nintendo delisted Wii U games after making Switch remasters, I can't help but suspect that they timed this.
@@thekiss2083 Yeah, I know. I don't get why, outside of the DS era, Nintendo never bothered to implement options for the left-handed. Link himself, outside of Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild, is left-handed.
Oooh, I really hope they update the Heat visor to make it like the Dolphin one. That visor really gave me headache/claustrophobia. Luckily the sequences where you have to have it on constantly aren't too long.
0:35 Something that I feel Other M got right (please don't hurt me!) was the visual style, especially the colors. The bright greens and pinks used on, say, zoomers and rios in that game made it look like "Super Metroid 3D" in ways that Prime and its more earthy color pallet didn't.
Got a couple other things right too, abilities (3D shinespark, screw attack both feel pretty great) and big, scary, fast paced boss battles too. People seem to often only say a thing is either all good or all bad.
I can appreciate that, but Nerrel raised the point that Prime's most unique factor in the series is immersiveness, and going with that visual appearance might have been a more faithful translation of the 2D experience but it would have cost something much better
3:59 personally, once I got used to the hybrid controls, I can see their purpose. It’s nice to have the more prime like platforming. I went to the dual stick controls in the end, but I can see me doing a play through in the hybrid controls for a slightly more “authentic” feel
Hopefully this opens the door for more Metroid Prime remasters, specially Metroid Prime: Hunters for the DS, who could REALLY use a graphic and control scheme update.
@@athlon64x29 Honestly, Prime 2 is my least-favourite of the Prime games, but that's not saying much as they're all really good, and each one has different strengths and weaknesses: Prime 1 has the best exploration, Prime 2 has the best puzzle-solving, and Prime 3 has the best combat. I guess you could say that they're each the Triforce of Courage, Wisdom and Power respectively if you'll forgive the use of a Zelda metaphor to describe Metroid Prime.
@@matthewmuir8884 if by "best combat" in prime 3 you mean the most BROKEN combat then yes, yes it is. while I wouldn't say prime 3 is bad by any stretch of means, but it also happens to be my LEAST favorite of the three simply because of how redundantly EASY that game is(and yes, that's including HARD mode). I still enjoy playing it though, but am pretty sure echos holds the record for best combat AND the puzzles. prime 1 might actually be my most favorite of the three as I find it more simpler than the other two, just NARROWLY ranking right above echos(their CLOSE, just that prime 1 barely wins). I love echos too, but I kinda find it a bit redundantly gimmicky, especially all those unskippable cutscenes that you have to sit through each time you go into dark eather, and then again going back. prime 3 is kinda gimmicky as well, but even heavier. hyper mode is the most hilariously BROKEN thing I've ever seen... yea, ok... maybe the dark beam from echos was kinda busted as well, but at least you couldn't use it to completely negate all damage like that... that game still found some wholesome ways to still be difficult, in spite of having an op arsenal.
@@TheDeepThinker-sq3iy No, I mean best combat. In terms of boss fights, half the boss fights in Prime 1 were good (Meta Ridley, Metroid Prime, etc.), half were boring, and one was immensely unrefined (Omega Pirate). For Prime 2, half its bosses were good (Dark Samus, the other final boss, and the giant robot), while the other half were exercises in frustration (spider ball guardian being the obvious example). Prime 3 was the first one where the boss fights were consistently good across the board. The corrupted bounty hunters were good boss fights, Dark Samus was a great final boss fight, the bosses inside each phazon core were good, the first Ridley fight was great, etc. As for regular combat, I do think that they could've made the phazon weaponry more risk-reward than it was, but, outside of that, it was a lot of fun. Prime 2 had a lot of enemies that were fun to fight against, but there were also some that were just plain annoying (the crocodile-mouthed things near the entrance to the swamp, for example; they weren't difficult, but they were frustrating). As for the ammo, the ammo system was good for exploration, but it meant that, if you ran out of ammo that was good against specific enemies (for instance, light ammo when in dark aether), if there are no objects that can be destroyed instead, you have to use the ammo that is terrible against those enemies in order to resupply. Prime 1 is my favourite as well because I really enjoy exploration. I should point out that my first experience playing these games was playing them back-to-back via Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii U just last year.

I'm still disappointed, mainly because the Wii U eshop will be closing in March, so, very soon, there won't be an official way for people to buy Prime 2 or 3 if they haven't already.
There is a lot to improve in 3, but considering they didnt even fix the artifact collection in this one...
Prime 1 is the best of them all anyway. The other two are good but not better than ir imo
@@Jose-se9pu Fix the artifact collection?
Other 3.
I really do hope a Metroid Prime 2 re-release gets the same treatment. The Sanctuary Fortress area would probably be jaw-dropping at this level of quality.
No.
$40 is too much for a re-release.
Absolutely. Would buy a Prime 2 Remastered day one
I agree, Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite of the Prime games and I really want to see it get remade like this instead of just a cheap port.
Nerrel + Metroid = Pure Happiness
true dat
and the digital foundry commentary
It's the best feeling to binge Nerrel all day, just to discover he uploaded a video on a game you're currently playing
He makes the best Nintendo content on TH-cam.
It can't be ignored? By who?
@@dogmendogmen By Nintendo.
@@KaiSchSp They'll continue to ignore it, that isn't anything new. Metroid has always reviewed well, and Nintendo has always neglected it and always will because it underperforms in Japan. It was never a rational decision to begin with, why would this change it?
The videos where Nerrel talks about Metroid and Zelda are my favorite
Replace “Metroid and zelda” with “literally anything” and I agree.
Nerrel does the best Richard Leadbeater parody impression ever. I wish to see more of this in future videos. That Skyward Sword HD tech review in Richard's impression was also equally hilarious.
That stalactite is meant to be shot from the ledge above. The reason it's so hard is because you're trying to sequence break
From all the comments, sounds like it's poorly designed. Should be clear what you're supposed to do.
It kind of looks like a graphic novel in some places. It's a neat artstyle for Metroid, reminds me of the opening for Samus Returns.
I was not expecting Digital Foundry himself to guest star. Nerrel doing it big BOYS
that’s mr. digital foundry to you
@@hikkikimori ah crap, sorry
9:14 god what a great line, made even better by the fact there's a non-zero chance someone at Nintendo is watching this video
Prime 2 is the best of the trilogy imo. I really hope they do
Considering the overwhelming praise for this remaster, greenlighting this studio for a Prime 2 remaster would be a no-brainer.
its crazy how nintendo news sites had been constantly teased “metroid prime remake in works for switch” and then it was just randomly shadowdropped lmao
I laughed way too hard at the DF sendup at the end (especially since I've already watched the actual DF analysis of this game). Oh and the rest of the video was good, too. Well done!
Another thing worth noting is that the Morphball pillar puzzle in the Phazon mines no longer resets, even after quitting and loading.
2:48 This may be a weird comment but jokes like this and his deadpan delivery are why I love Nerrel's humor so much.
You're like Ron Burgundy when he has to say out loud "we are laughing and enjoying ourselves".
I don’t know why but Samus taking damage at that moment made it even funnier. Probably why Nerrel kept the sound in.
That Richard Leadbetter ending was absolutely BRILLIANT🤣
bWWWWiliant*
Holy god, I’m stoned as shit and new Nerrel drops? This rules.
The physical copy needs to hurry up and arrive because I need more Metroid in my life.
Just got mine, it has a reversible cover art insert.
Agree there
agree
That was the one notably negative change they made. It makes button spamming less needed, but that was never optimal anyway
i just dont really get it. there were never really times where spamming normal shots was a good idea, at least not after getting charge beam, which is about 1 hour into the game after planetfall. it presented as a challenge when i could no longer keep some wave beam-weak enemies in perpetual stun, like the wave pirates and security drones. this made me have to do more strafe dancing than usual. i feel like i could deal with chozo ghosts a lot faster with partial charges if i had them too. none of this ruined the game, just made me wish for a toggle.
I think I understand what they were going for:
-You don't have to spam the button as much to shoot quickly.
-There's no "interpretation" of your inputs where the game tries to figure out if you intend to rapid fire based on button spamming and then just put the weapon to "rapid fire mode." Like you'll never shoot when you don't press the button and always shoot if you tap it (as the rate of fire allows it.)
-You can still get from pressing the button to a full charge shot just as fast (for the power beam at least) so it can't be considered a downgrade in anyway.
...but it just doesn't feel that good.
@@matthewmuir8884 Sadly, not to my knowledge. I didn't see an option for it in the menu anywhere.
Inspired art direction > state of the art super duper graphical fidelity, always
This is the one game I felt it would be insulting to just play in handheld mode and hooked my dock back up to my home theater for my playthrough.
I have a 4090. And yeah this game looks pretty nice.
It looks worse than ps3 graphics.
@@tylerthompson3075 And you need to have your eyes checked
I love when Nerrel partners with Digital Foundry. It’s an admittedly strange arrangement, but it means I only have to watch one video! What a timesaver!
I'm starting to think someone at Nintendo just wants more Nerrel videos and that's what's bringing all this goodness to the table of late - and hey, carry on fellas~
It's always a good day when Nerrel drops a new video!
yeah
I got divorced and impaled with a spear today, still a good day
I think the thermal visor was purposefully made to be blurry to emulate footage from actual thermal vision that you sometimes see.
Of all people to just gloss over this I'm surprised it was you -- they didn't even make an attempt to bring over the Chao Garden into the remaster
Dark and Light suits are also Samus' best designs after the classic Varia suit.
Somehow got this video even though it's unlisted so..... first?
Feel free to smack it around a bit.
hope you enjoyed the early access
6:50 Looking at the stalactite in the scan visor shows you exactly where to shoot it. It's the same point as the scannable icon.
that's not the point though, the point is that even when aiming directly at that spot it still won't hit properly.
Thanks for sharing! Even if it's ''not the point''
The fix for this is to just turn Free-Lock off. I agree with him, but I don't know how Nerrel didn't figure this out, it only takes 5 seconds to do
@@Hysteria98 except someone new to the game may not be aware that that is the solution or the cause of the problem.
@@GBDupree Lock on is on by default for all Aiming options, If I recall.
6:50 Holding the reset camera button during lock-on effectively disables the free aim, making it easy to hit those stalactites. I wish it were mentioned in-game, but it's a decent workaround, nonetheless. Great video, btw.
I can't remember the last time I've heard Nerrel sound so happy.
Yes! A very welcome change.
I live for Nerrel's DF parodies. I love how this one actually had some internal logic to it as well lmao
It's an 11 minute video and the game released 20 days ago.
@jarlwhiterun7478
Yeah, shadow dropped (then) 20 days ago
Just shows Nerrel immediately got to work on the video, and released it less than a month after release
That's pretty quick with how much Nerrel goes into detail with MPR
I was looking forward to this after your texture video. Thanks for the high quality videos!
The DF bits send me in tears lmao
It's a massive downgrade in every regard. It looks like a vacation spot now instead of the hostile dying/dead world.
Nerrel always is SPOT on with the social commentary at the ends of his videos. (My favorite was the one with the baby seals)
The reports about Prime 2/3 Remastered are conflicting; the Grubb rumor suggest a more basic one, whereas the Belmont rumor suggests them trying to match this one, but they'd be outsourced. We'll see if we get either, but the former would be massively deflating.
2:25 RIP o7 MARIO WiiU I remember reading posts from that guy as a kid on Miiverse
I'm really hoping for some patches that will reintroduce the ambient lighting while firing and such. It can't be on purose.

Nerrel, a name known well
To those who love to learn and dwell
In the world of gaming and anime
With him as guide, we'll never stray
His voice, a soothing sound to hear
As he talks about what we hold dear
With knowledge vast and insights deep
He makes even the most complex easy to keep
From "The World Ends With You"
To "Metroid" and "Mario" too
No topic is too niche or small
For Nerrel to explain it all
His passion for the things he loves
Shines bright as stars up above
And as we listen to his words
We feel our own love take flight like birds
So here's to Nerrel, a TH-cam star
Whose impact reaches near and far
May his channel always thrive and grow
And his knowledge continue to flow.
Ill add one, morph ball bombs. That energy tank upgrade gave me hell trying to do it the old way but you can waggle to jump. Neat.
When you first showed the Wii footage, I was like “Wow, that looks pretty good.” And then you showed the switch footage. 🤯
the Digital Foundry gags are always a joy!
I'm glad you actually tested some of these things in game. The pulse-rifle style firing feels so much more sluggish that I thought it actually WAS slower and wished I could go back. I also never even noticed the bullet magnetism at all, despite having already played it twice.
its really good to see metroid back tbh, didn't play any of the games and yet is a fan, hope one day that others like f_zero get something like metroid did
The outro is wonderful.
Like two weeks before this came out, I had beaten the original on GameCube and loved it, so this was pretty cool to see, and I managed to get a physical version of the remaster
Didn't expect to get Richard_Leadbedder'd at the end. I wish they'd cover input latency and things that actually mattered (to me).
The moment you've all been waiting for!
You know, ever since the remaster was released I've just been thinking "I can't wait to see Nerrel's video on this." I can finally put those thoughts to rest.
One of the few things I thought myself!
Remake?
I just got my copy today. This was a perfectly timed video release to me.
It's so amazing that you've gotten digital foundry to collaborate with you again
There's something about the original game's graphics that just captivate me more than the remake. I think it's a similar to when you see pixel art in action and your imagination fills in the graphics, but instead of pixel art it's low poly models. The remake doesn't capture that. Also the new art direction reminds me of pikmin 3
Everyone else i've talked to said that the remaster is a 100% upgrade to the original, so I know it's just me.
The digital foundry impression is so good lmao
And this is where I would keep my physical copy of Metroid Prime Remastered…. IF I COULD FIND ONE

That Digital Foundry spoof was well made.
I recently replayed both Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4. These might be the two video games that have aged the most gracefully in all of video gaming history.
I bet the guy who made some of those gun noises’ mother is VERY proud.
Ah, another person here who has seen HBomberguy's video.
To be fair, 42 graphics was a lot for the time.
I was about to correct Nerrel and say Retro did Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze in the meantime and instantly realized that game is 9 years old.
I loved using thermal, I have no doubt they made it unbearable to look at to make you not want to use it except for necessity.
That digital foundry parody is soo good
Prime 2 is my favorite, I want so bad for this treatment for the rest of the series.
Nerrel doing Digital Foundry parody is the sole reason why I subscribed
As one of the five people who bought the trilogy on Wii U, I will be continuing my lifelong practice of watching Nerrel videos while waiting for a bundle
Stay strong.
@@matthewmuir8884 I wouldn't expect a left-handed mode given that Skyward Sword has never gotten one
@@thekiss2083 Yeah, I know. I don't get why, outside of the DS era, Nintendo never bothered to implement options for the left-handed. Link himself, outside of Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild, is left-handed.

Nintendo has never been known for accessibility options, which is a shame.
Love the ending gags returning from older videos.

They kind of do.
I hope to see more games with hectographics
Finally, I get to hear Nerrel talk about gyro controls again.
Naah, backtracking and fetchquesting the chozo artifacts is a big part of Metroid, I'm glad they didn't change any of it.
Agreed, its no Metroid game without respawning enemies and backtracking long distances for one item.
Yeah I like it too
Should have made it optional though. By the time that quest really starts you have been through most of the map like 100 times. God that quest sucks
Hopefully this opens the door for more Metroid Prime remasters, specially Metroid Prime: Hunters for the DS, who could REALLY use a graphic and control scheme update.

@@athlon64x29 Am not entirely so sure about that statement... but it's definitely good. and it's also the HARDEST of the three too.
A sequel to my favorite credit sequence of any video ever, I can't breathe
damn would have been a 13/10 if it had the reflection effect
5:17 the combination of never seeing this person before and how accurate that is was really funny, with the line
