I am from Kingman. My brother and I played on that train many times. Late 60s. We climb all over it and be in the conductors area. Open the door where they shoveled the coal. Almost fell off though climbing on front section. Thanks for the remembering of past times

Mini years ago when I was in Kingman I just happened to find this visitor center and it’s really a nice place to take a look at the past when route 66 was at its heyday

I have been past this visitors center I don't know how many times and I regret not stopping, it is nice and large inside, never thought by looking at it from the outside, this is what was inside, I will more then likely never make it back out there since moving from Southern Nevada to the Gulf Coast. When my family would drive me to OK to visit my brother and mom, we would always stay in a hotel in Kingman this.was in the late 60 and early 70's we would stay at a motel, the one thing I that remember was that there was a rock outcrop right next to. the motel and it had caves and tunnels all through it, we would play in there every time we stopped. It was like a mini Materhourn from Disneyland.

Russ I appreciate the content, but could you possibly hold the camera still enough to focus and we could pause and read the displays. Also reduces the nausea angle. You know better. Your whole channel is based upon slow, steady video of passing scenery with a warm avuncular narration.
Your going to the effort of filming, then slow down and make it smooth.

When I was living there they had the i40 bypass completed, but the town was holding up the opening. One tactic they used was wording on the signs. I think the town in the movie cars is loosely based on those Arizona towns that suffered from the opening of i40. All the mom and pop motels shut down one after the other after the bypass opened.

That Steam locomotive 3759 in the park was the very last Steam locomotive to be retired by the Santa Fe Railroad. It's very last run was an excursion through California commemorating the last steam train on the Santa Fe system. Afterward it was donated to Kingman to be put on display.

We moved to California from Michigan in 1961 and we did the whole length of Rt 66. It's sure changed a lot.
That steam loco, in 1991 the Grand Canyon Railway offered to lease it, to restore it and pull passenger trains from LA to the Grand Canyon. Kingman turned them down, but I think it would have been cool!

In the hills close to downtown you can find remnants of an old wagon trail. There are deep ruts in some of the rocks that were worn from an untold number of wagons being pulled up the hill. If you want to see old history, that's the place to check out. It would be interesting to find out what can be seen from a drone's perspective. If my old memory isn't too degraded, that road by the old diner leads up that way.

My grandparents were in Kingman in the depression. My grandpa Williams was the supervisor for the Kingman Power Plant and my grandma ran the telephone Company. So my roots go deep there. My Uncle Lee Williams was killed in the 73 Doxal propane explosion and the new high school ( Lee Williams High School) is named after him. My family still lives there. My husbands grandpa was the supervisor for Santa Fe Railroad and supervised the Chinese crews that laid the original tracks from Winslow Arizona to Needles California.I had aunts and uncles who mined minerals in Oatman Arizona where they had their homes. My grandmas brother was an Engineer for Santa Fe from Winslow to Needles and from time to time stopped in Williams Az, where I was born and raised, and I rode with him in the cab of a steam engine. My husbands dad was a brakeman for Santa Fe on the same run. Mr. D’s diner is the best place to get a hamburger deluxe! They use fresh potatoes for those fries too! Enjoy Kingman!! There’s so much history there!!

@@i.hunter3627 Kingman isn’t that far from the river. 30 miles. Arizona has around 130 lakes and 5 rivers including the Colorado River. Arizona is full of agriculture. Even in the desert. Plenty of water here though it’s slowly going away because of population growth and California sucking us dry. That being said I live just 15 minutes from Kingman with a well drilled at 306 feet deep and I have water in my well at 92 feet.
Most of these surrounding little towns get water from wells.
