    But at least I was able to get it clear up and start my journey to being a better rider.

      Believe it or not this is a common occurrence with older riders because there wasn't the training or a TH-cam to learn from. So rider's had to teach themselves and survival was the reward and refinement of skills was secondary to survival.

    Give this guy a break. It takes balls to put up a video like this and I think it reflects on how life is in some situations. It's important to see this. He probably feels he's doing it wrong and get stressed and can't take in the new information. Pushing with his right hand he will go to the right but in his mind the bike should go left so he tries to compensate and everything feels wrong. It can happen to all of us, in school, in any sport when you're new and everyone is watching, at work or when you try to take your driving licence. Most of us probably think we're riding like a champ and won't need any lessons. If you haven't been on a track yet you have a lot more to learn.
    Best of all, he did something about it and went to a school.

    • @RhinoDan

      The problem I had was years of pulling to counter steer. If you ride a two wheels a bicycle or a motorcycle counter steering is used consciously or unconsciously but either way countersteering is used. I didn't understand what counter steering was at this time in the video. My concept of counter steering was similar to a car while in fact it different. Cars spin out motorcycles high side. Needless to say this day change my life and allow me to become a motorcycle champion 2 years later. Unfortunately this video most people first contact with my channel and they don't watch my races or my track riding passing 600 and 1000 on a R3.

    I can see how this might confuse new people. Especially in a parking lot. At low speeds, the bike will turn in the direction you steer, and at higher speeds, the bike will lean and therefore turn in the opposite direction. (Counter steering). But in a parking lot, you're getting a bit of both depending on your speed. Glad schools are teaching this stuff cuz it can save your live once you understand how it works.

    The easiest way to understand the difference is to ride a 4 wheeler or a jetski and then immediately go ride a motorcycle. Also the best way to feel counter steering on a bike is a long sweeping curve at higher speed where you have to maintain a lean angle. You will notice you have to maintain counter steer pressure to maintain the lean because the bike is always trying to right itself due to fork rake angle/castor angle.

    Countersteering is a very interesting feeling, but one doesn’t really need a lot of speed. I’ve even gotten my bike to do it at around 25kmh. Just practice slow in open places like this parking lot and slowly increased your speed. It’s an amazing feeling turning so smoothly when you get it right.

I've been where you were, and it takes so much practice to be comfortable with counter steering, but when you do, that's all you will do. Good luck man, it takes a man to show a video where you're learning. This was a great video to put up for new riders. I've been riding so long I constantly forget how absolutely terrifying it must be to learn to ride a motorcycle as an adult. I started on dirt bikes when I was 10 then sport bikes at 20. On the dirt you crash a lot and slide out and when you're young you have no fear so you don't care. I was also an adrenaline junkie, kind of still am. Makes it easier to progress to street bikes. I never had any fear whatsoever. I've never even dropped a bike let alone crash. I'm 54 now still riding sport bikes probably more agressively than I should but I love the sport. Not everyone takes to it as easily. And that fear and anxiety can really psych you out. It's hard to get that out of your head once it's in there. The thing with counter steering is that if you ever rode a bicycle you've already done it tons of times. Being in the street is scary but just let that muscle memory take over and don't over think it. You were naturally doing u turns fine so you know how to ride. This instructor was perfect. Patient and helpful. Taking courses and constantly trying to improve and posting your progress should be applauded. Believe it or not you will become a great rider. Just don't give up. And for anyone starting out just ride your ride at your own pace. Don't worry about what some fools on social media say or what you friends are doing. The number one goal on the street to to be safe. Nothing else.You ask as many questions, take as many courses and practice as much as possible to get there. Best of luck to you.

    I'm an old guy that learned how to countersteer back in 1968 (Honda 450, my current bike is a 2001 Hayabusa). I've demonstrated countersteering to others by pushing on the inside bar with only the front of my fist, but otherwise when I countersteer, I pull on the outside bar as much as I push on the inside bar. I don't think about steering, just leaning by countersteering, and knowing that adjusting lean angle and|or speed adjusts cornering radius. Sort of like flying a plane where bank angle controls the turn, except you countersteer to lean on a bike

    I don’t think the rider is actually understanding what the guy is teaching him. I didn’t notice a single instance of the rider actually using counter steering. I think many people understand it better using diagrams on a white board. A little slower speed and shorter, firmer pushes on the bar while going straight along a straight line on the pavement is a better way to understand and experience it.

      it's impossible to direct the bike any differently once at a certain speed. So whether you know it or not you are counter steering. Try actually turning the bars in the direction you want to go, when at speed, and you'll see it fights you and wobbles and destabilizes the bike.

      Rhino Dan I totally agree.. I’m a new rider on day one and am experiencing the same things u went thru and explained.
      It’s just against logic 😂that’s why it’s kinda hard to grasp but I’m sure with time, practice and free experimentation it becomes natural.
      Hope it won’t take much time for me cuz my turns are really slow and wide and sometimes almost not the way I wanted it to be 😅

    • @skinnylittlebitch4470
      @skinnylittlebitch4470 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@msb3782 The way I see it is that the explanations are the problem. I heard countless people trying to explain the push left, go left, push right, go right, but nobody explains the mechanics of this. Super easy, actually (once I figured it out). When you push on the left handle bar, it will aim your front tire to the right which in turn tips the bike to the left, then you instinctively follow through with continuing to steer towards the left. The first two steps are in such tiny amounts that you don't even realize you are doing it, but your bike will!! This is probably your biggest problem. Then for you, I would also think you probably need to lean a little bit more. Maybe use a little bit more throttle also?

    Just remember this every time you turn at speeds beyond like 15mph. When you are going to turn left sit as close to the bike as possible, put pressure on the right foot peg, right knee to the gas tank, push left handle bar, and move your head diagonally forward left up to 90 degrees on the left elbow. For the right side just do the opposite everything for the left side. The idea is to keep the bike as upright as possible and lean no more than necessary. Even if it isn't required for you to "hang" on it's a good idea to make a habit because it may feel faster to lean by doing it the wrong way but at high high speeds doing it right is where it show the rewards of doing it right. Keep the eyes up too and you will see how much easier it is to ride at very high speeds than it was before consistently.

    • @RhinoDan

      100%. I can actually lean in control at full throttle going over 100mph. Before I lean but I was holding inside peg. Outside peg makes it where the bike goes up on a wheelie but comes down firm and stable still under full power and high RPM. I feel the contact patch is fatter. Inside peg is totally wrong. All schools and the manual should teach it this way as I said on the original post here.

    So counter steering is just steering? Why do they have to confuse new riders or people looking into it by calling it something fancy and telling you that you are doing it wrong????? Is it supposed to make you sound more Elite by calling it counter steering or something?

    • @RhinoDan
      @RhinoDan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's counter steering pushing right on the bar to go right. The wheel is going left your riding on the inside edge of the right tire. In a car streering right the wheel moves right. In a bike it's opposite that's why it's called counter steering.
      You on only steer the bike like a car at slow speeds when the bike is completely stopped. For a u turn or a turn once the bike is at speed counter steering becomes the primary steering.
      It's why riding a motorcycle or a bike is so difficult to learn in the beginning versus riding a three wheeler or a bike with training wheels.
      Hopes this helps if your still confused try with a bicycle first it's easier that way.

    I understand why some or many people are putting negative comments. Yes he is brave to put up the video. The question is what was his primary reason? For his own or public's critique or something for newbies. You can hear it in his voice how whiny he sounds and makes excuses for the reason why he made mistakes. This speaks volumes in his general life (makes excuses for everything). Also later in the video you can hear him say, "I know how to ride...". Anybody under an hr if that can operate a motorcycle let alone a car...but that doesn't mean you know how to operate (ride, drive) well. See how many shitty drivers on public roads? They have a license but they still drive like shit. The course you are taking enhances your ability to operate your vehicle better than how well you "think" you ride. You took the course for a reason.

      I should have said that, too.
      Getting flustered is normal for most of us.
      I do it sometimes, although in different circumstances.
      Learning not to get flustered / annoyed / beyond the point where you can regain calm can be as tricky as acquiring regular skills.
      When I learned to ride, I was praised immediately for my balance of the bike and I had never ridden a motorbike before.
      However, when I started to practice the slalom, and was told strictly not to brake and/or accelerate at certain points, it was much less intuitive a skill acquisition than balance.
      It's no big deal. I can learn a language with relative ease, but cannot do maths in my head.
      This is no different.

    • @RhinoDan
      @RhinoDan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chris V HI Chris and thanks for asking the question. counter steering is when you turn the bars the opposite direction of the turn.
      So push right to turn right. If you have a bicycle you can practice counter steering. All two vehicles counter steer in some degree.
      So ride your bicycle in a parking lot and push right and see where the bike goes. If you can master counter steering riding a motorcycle will get easier on the steering aspect.
      I have other videos for a new rider and I am going to make a basic videos for new riders to help them on learning how to ride.

    Ive heard a lot about counter steering and dont have much time in the saddle but isnt counter steering at its core just leaning the bike and applying pressure to the bars so they dont jerk to one side or the other.

    • @RhinoDan
      @RhinoDan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Scott Hi counter steering is pushing right to turn right and pushing left to turn left at faster than 5 mph. Go to a empty parking lot push on the right bar and see what happens. If you go left then you pulled instead of push. Try it and see what happens for yourself. Don't push very hard.
      That is counter steering if you can learn this then your riding will improve.

    • @craigmcaninch183
      @craigmcaninch183 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not just leaning. If you want proof, lean left while you push the handle bar forward with your right hand. You're driving the bike by the way you push forward on the handle bar.
      What riders with experience don't realize is that yhey are doing this anyway or they couldn't steer the bike. What many do is push with one hand and pull back with the other hand.
      Thus if you want to turn right you will find yourself lightly pushing forward with the right hand and yet pulling lightly toward yourself with the left hand.
      But, you can do better with use of the push right to go right or push left to go left counter steering technique. Make yourself use it. .

  • @Kris_P._Bey_Ken
    @Kris_P._Bey_Ken 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Technically YOU don't countersteer, the bike countersteers. If you're traveling a straight line and you want to turn right for example, you literally try to turn the handlebars to the right, the bike jerks to the left and turns left. ("Turns the opposite direction") this happens at roughly 12 miles per hour or faster. But I'm thinking many instinctively learn it as they go. It just happens to confuse most when they actually try to learn about it by the book, instructor or class when they already do it on the road.

My R3 had a lot of work done to it and so much love put into that race bike. Very awesome to be able to go from this video which I had trouble doing counter steering on command to be able to do it on a race track at fast speeds. After this video I went to a parking lot and did work for years until I stopped street riding . I would practice braking, counter steering and throttle in parking lots.

      Hi, If you have a bicycle try it in a parking lot push right not down just forward on the right bar and see what happens. Bicycles and motorcycles shared counter steering. And remember you this is around 12 to 16 mph any slower speeds and it's just steering.

    I had such a hard time watching this. The coach would say go slower about 10 times. This guy just kept going faster. He never went 25 or around it one time. They should have been working on throttle control with this guy first. The trainer should have seen that he had no throttle control, Then addressed the issue.
    2nd. He still does not have counter steering down at all. It was easy to see he had not understood it. In his defense, the trainer did not do a great job of training C-steering. After the first exercise, all the trainer had to say to get this guy to understand, was keep your elbows LVL with the bars and push forward on the left bar to steer left and push forward on the right bar to drive right. Then stand in front of the bike grab the hands of the rider and walk him through it once or twice. Anyway, you could tell this guy felt as if everyone around him thought he was dumb. Therefor, he was nervous, nervous every mistake in the book. The part where he said. "I can ride," if that was the case why are you at a school that teaches people how to ride? The trainer should have addressed this issue. I feel as if this guy walked away more confused. I wonder how many of these trainers actually ride a motorcycle and are experienced enough to train this course?Don't get me wrong most of this schools video's are great. This one! Not so much.

    • @RhinoDan
      @RhinoDan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      troy davis Thanks for watching and the long reply. Actually if you watch the video you would have seen my throttle control is good my deceleration was smooth with the throttle. Yes I was nervous just made a fool of myself on the body position bike. As goes my speed yeah I was having trouble in the video with keeping it to 25 mph. So I had a speed problem not a throttle control problem slightly different. Coach Cobie did a great job and I learn a ton. I had bad habits and had to work them out. Just because a person can ride on the freeway doesn't mean they can ride. A coach can help a person with their bad habits and almost every rider has bad habits they made while learning how to ride.
      I understand this video is hard to watch coach Cobie had to help me with bad habits of pulling instead of pushing I started riding in the dirt on farms and mountain roads.
      So I had many bad habits from dirt riding one of them was looking right in front of the bike.
      Thanks for your opinion.

    • @999REDDUC
      @999REDDUC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes and no, Seth Glenn. We all naturally learned counter steering when we began to ride a bicycle but we don't master counter steering until we make it a conscious effort. This may take hundreds or thousands of conscious counter steering efforts to turn it into muscle memory. If you watch this video you will see that this guy is riding his motorcycle nicely through some curves using counter steering. th-cam.com/video/GKbmBYKu6ow/w-d-xo.html Everything is going fine until he runs wide and has to make an effort to tighten up his turn preventing him from running into the truck. When you watch the video you will see that a combination of target fixation, applying front brakes and trying to steer the handle bars to the right caused him to go left and run into the fire truck. A basic rider course would've taught this rider to look through the turn and apply a little more press to the right bar to stay in his lane and avoid the head on crash.

      The way I see it is that the explanations are the problem.
