23 years ago I set the alarm clock and watched this match live at arround 2am. I remember I was blown away by the shot making quality in the first set... this is undoubtedly one of the matches that pushed tennis to its modern standards.
No point in arguing that Yevgeny Kafelnikov was undoubtedly one of the most talented players of his era. 10 years in ATP top 10, 5 years in top 5, former world no.1, davis cup winner, , 2 grand slams on 2 different surfaces, 4 doubles grand slams, , Olympic gold medalist as well

This match is a great example of why Agassi won so much. Kafelnikov got off to a hot start, but when you are playing against Agassi - especially in the heat - he can just wear you down throughout the match... In the last few games Kafelnikov looked exhausted and Andre looked like he could play another few hours if he had to. He really played so much differently in these best years of his career than when he was younger. His fitness and ability to grind took so much of the pressure of his game to outhit these younger players. He could take guy's legs away and make the match all about fitness. It worked so well for him!
I loved how during these years, the ESPN commentators compared Agassi to a body puncher in boxing. He would just grind guys down, especially in Australia

A VHS tape recording of this match was the main thing that improved my tennis as a beginner. With no internet access and no coaches, this was the first and only tennis video I had access to for years. So I rewatched it countless times. After only one year, I was beating guys who'd played 10+ years. Memories!
Thanks for the video. I was a teen in the mid 90's to early 2000's and have fond memories of tennis from that time. Two of my favourites from the era right here.
Jesus Christ Kafelnikov's backhand down the line was a sniper.
Kafelnikov played amazing the firs set!!! He got tired it’s a shame because he was playing incredible but Agassi was in another level that day that’s why he was the “punisher” I wonder if they have played at night what the outcome could be
It wasn’t YK’s level of play: Agassi started slow because he went five sets with Sampras in the previous round.
@@rjamesyork no, Kafelnikov played a very high level the first set he got tired in the 3rd set . Agassi even said that he saw this and started to punish him more
Kafelnikov also played doubles in every tournament, he never complained on getting tired of matches
I’ve seen tennis in the 90’s and that 1st set was the best set of tennis I saw Kafelnikov play in his career. Mind you he won 2 Grand Slam titles.

Yes, but maybe the best set and match he ever played was in montreal SF 1999 against Agassi. In his book Agassi said that was the sickest display of tennis he ever face ever!!! An he olayed great matches against sampras, federer, becker, etc etc etc

Yeah, it has not been many matches where two players have hit harder, but some of the matches between Agassi & Federer come close, at least forehand to forehand 😊@amanzaidi6102

no. the grand slam is WITHIN the season. 4 in a row : aus, french open, US open and wimbledon. not in a 2 years season.

I saw this game also live on TV.. what a game.. Kafelnikov got tired, he was outstanding in the fist set.. later on Agassi took the game to his hand and played very very good… was nice to see it back after 24 years…

The problem for Kafelnikov wasn't his game, it was the fact that he played too many tournaments, and he paid for it in the end, he ended up retiring at 29. Should have won more slams but his full schedule hardly gave him respite before the slams.

I remember watching this match and thinking Agassi would probably lose after the first 20 minutes. But, he turned it around.

@@minh1197 Let’s not forget that Agassi was in his 30s here, Kafelnikov 20s. Also we’re seeing these days with Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Reilly Opelka, John Isner, that a big guy can go 5 sets. Isner played and won the longest match ever played, and he’s 6’10’’!

Check Yevi at 1996 vs Sampras, Kafelnikov is such an example of overplaying and lack of knowledge. Magnus Norman clearly stated how wrong this generation was about training and the lack of rest.Todayy players work so much more on mobility and strength, in 1996 yevi was the perfect player, tall, strong, thin and mobile. He should have won so much more.

He had a great ‘96 French open and was a very good player, won a couple of slams, but he had some obstacles like, you know, Sampras, Agassi, Hewitt, Kuerten, Ferrero, Safin, Rafter, etc. They were good players too. Sampras and Agassi were just better than him, the others could beat anyone on their day.
Like many Russian players, his biggest struggles were mental. I agree he should have won more. Had he used his head more and competed stronger and smarter he would have won more.
Everybody got same conditions in 96.
Yevgeny had to compete with peak agassi sampras etc...he actually played too much IMHO.. should have paced himself.
Post Sampras and Agassi , he was world No.3 of that era. Kuerten and Rafter are my favourites too, but they were clay court specialist and Hard court specialists. Only Hewitt managed to win 2 grand slams in 2 different surfaces apart from Kafelnikov.

Looking at these highlights you’d think Kafelnikov won comfortably. Nothing like the real match.
Watching this back now, I am surprised how good YK was at times. Both Kafelnikov and Davydenko were great at times but could equally lose to a weak opposition when they had a bad day.

The feeling of being love with a person that he fells for really push him to succeed! Behind a successful man, there is GREAT woman not just a woman! Who could push him to be self motivated and determined to be back on the top! Steffi Graf! No doubt about it! They are a match that made from heaven!❤❤

Strangely Yevgeny Kafelnikov never utilised his height to his advantage while serving. He need to jump a big more n it could have been a big serve as his weapon. Sad otherwise Kafelnikov+ big serve= invincible

Rafter won 2 USO, and wasn't a big performer on any other surface. He played extremely well on grass too, but ran into Sampras and others. Kuerten never proceeded beyond the QF of any tournament except French open.

If that was correct why was he hitting them past Agassi all match? Agassi was famous for having some of the fastest reflexes, feet and hands ever seen on the tour. Kafelnikov had great disguise, especially on his forehand. Terrific player on his day. Agassi was just better.

What Nadal Federer & Dojkovic have achieved would never be achieved again. They have clearly broken the myth that players can't win Grand Slam after 30.

@@darrylperry648 don't speak with half baked knowledge, Agassi had dropped out of Ranking and reached as low as 140 in the age of 20's this has not been done by Federer, Nadal and Dojkovic, Agassi skipped many tournaments before the age of 30's for personal reasons which you look Federer , Nadal, and Dojkovic never did that is an added advantage for Agassi, I am not saying that Agassi is not a great player but if you consider the calibre of Federer, Nadal and Dojkovic they took the game to another level
