  • Relive every minute of the action from 2-0, 0-1 in the final set of the 1995 Davis Cup Final in Moscow between Pete Sampras and Yevgeny Kafelnikov. The Washington Post described it as “probably his best clay court performance ever”, opening its report: “They said Pete Sampras wasn’t supposed to be a great claycourt player. They said he would be the weak link for the United States in the 1995 Davis Cup final against Russia. Trouble is, they forgot to tell Pete Sampras.”

    Sampras beat Muster, Courier, Kafelnikov, Bruguera ON clay. All French Open winners. The problem with Pete was he didn't have the conditioning to win on clay for two weeks like the other gentlemen did. BUT he definitely could play on the stuff.

      Tennis schedule was harder back then several masters were 5-setters, less time between slams, and top players couldn't opt out as often. Also, Sampras' health condition affected his endurance maybe treatable now.

      Mr .Sampras Never had an effective backhand down the line or a vicious Topspin return on his backhand or great passing shot on backhand side , so he was being forced to turn around his backhand to hit his BIG forehand, BUT that would create two major problems : 1) spending too much energy ( physically ) 2 ) opening too much space on his forehand side ...... if you would look at ALL the gentleman you named above , THEY all had a super great backhand down- the- line AND backhand return shot ...classic one was : Borg backhand down the line . With that backhand he would NEVER win French open because the nature of high bouncing ball on clay targeted to his WEAK backhand .

    To be honest Russia should have won it, Kafelnikov better player on Clay but got very nervous and lot of pressure Sampras on the other hand was a grand slam champion already and play one of the best matches of his life on clay.

    Reminds me irresistibly of the Davis Cup Final 1972, US v. Romania, played on clay in Bucharest. US were expected to lose, and the Romanian crowd and linesmen did their best to ensure that. Stan Smith played heroically to win his 2 singles (clay was not his best surface) and won the doubles with Van Dillen with rampant bad calls, and Tiriac, in particular, using gross gamesmanship and urging on the crowd. After the match with Tiriac, Smith, the most upright and gentlemanly player told Tiriac he would never speak to him again.
    The Russians here were pretty underhand, too. They watered the courts to make them even slower, and were fined and told not to try any tricks like that again. They were convinced they would win, because Sampras did not like clay, but like Stan Smith, he rose to the occasion, and won his 2 singles, and the doubles.

    This wasn’t even a clay court it was a mud court , the Russians intensionally watered down the court to slow it down .
    One of the greatest wins ever by Sampras and the most underrated .

    • @miguelbarahona6636
      @miguelbarahona6636 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It doesn´t seem the court was slippery, that would have been my only complain. For a non clay courter, actually it´s better when the clay court is watered, because the bounce is much more predictable, and the feet movement is easier, there is much more grip to the ground. For a power player like Sampras, being able to hit hard with a solid base (feet) and after a predictable bounce, using a small racket is ideal. Also in this conditions, topspin shots are less effective, because the bounce is lower.

      Especially because clay is Pete's weakness.

    • @hehehehehahahaha2025
      @hehehehehahahaha2025 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miguelbarahona6636 While you're right about the topspin aspect of a watered court, the thing is, Sampras' serve - by far his biggest weapon - relied HEAVILY on spin. As for his flat FH, a watered court will give him more time to set up the shot but it does reduce the penetrative effect and in theory should make it harder to finish points - which is kinda what you want as an opponent of Sampras, considering his thalassemia minor and propensity to run out of gas.

      @@hehehehehahahaha2025 I didn't know if I should respond to you or respond to the TH-cam user you responded to. I don't know if any respond is needed to begin with.
      Nevertheless, I think one thing or two need to be mentioned.
      On clay, a tennis ball looses more horizontal velocity than on a non clay surfaces after the bounce.
      That's on dry clay. The ball looses horizontal velocity. Some of this velocity is not lost, it becomes vertical velocity (even more so with topspin) hence a brutal bounce that is hard to handle.
      Dry clay? The ball gets a bit heavier because the felt gather some dust.
      Wet clay? Thank goodness I never had to hit such heavy balls.

      I remember Pete saying when they got back to America with the Cup, there was hardly any public interest. Same thing when he achieved his record 6 in a row end of year no.1 ranking, there was more interest, appreciation and admiration for his achievement abroad, than in America.
