High Hood SD40-2 Switching Customers! Norfolk Southern Local Trains

  • Back in March 2009, I chased this H31 local working the GAF-Elk shingle plant and Lebanon Seaboard Corporation with a High Hood SD40-2 and SD60. Both of these EMD locomotives were set up for long hood forward operation at the time. The 3201 has since had its nose chopped and the cab-end designated as the front. NS 6608 was rebuilt into SD60E 7006 in June 2015.
    Check out the switching playlist: • Trains Switching Custo...
    Watch the previous videos of this local to learn more details about these switching operations:
    The GAF / ELK Shingle plant: • Local Trains at the Sh...
    Lebanon Chemical: • Local Trains Shifting ...
    Please subscribe: / centralpennrailproduct...
    And follow on Facebook: / centralpennrailproduct...
    I hope you enjoy this throwback of switching action! I had previously uploaded these videos, but the quality was bad from the old editor so I remastered them into the original 1080p format and cleaned them up a bit.
    I could listen to these EMD idle and throttle noises all day. I do miss the former Southern high nose SD40-2's being a common sight, but there are still 10 former Norfolk & Western high nose SD40-2's running today (none in this area).
    Thanks for watching!

    Awesome video of local switch w the high hood engine! Can't say I've ever seen one of those b4 but very unique! Thanks for sharing your videos and I'm viewing them from the 1st state of DELAWARE.

    Ah there’s nothing more exciting than an NS high hood traveling through the Pennsylvania countryside. Add in a P3 or Illinois Central’s Nathan P5 and you have twice the excitement you have

    To me, there's no better-sounding engine than the SD40's. Great video. Just subscribed since you're fellow Pennsylvanian!

    Nice catches! I like the Norfolk Southern Hi-Hood EMD SD40-2, the Norfolk Southern EMD SD60, and the Nathan P3 Air-Horn a lot! Really nice!

      I like the P3 too, although it has a bit of a squeal. It's such a rare horn to find on NS locomotives today.

      @@CentralPennRailProductions Yes! I actually heard a P3 on a Norfolk Southern EMD SD70ACe earlier this year, which is very rare. I actually would prefer it on the older locomotives than the newer ones. I actually caught that locomotive in Wauseon, Ohio, which is 33 miles from Toledo, Ohio.

    Fantastic video, this video is a reminder that NS’s SOU roots aren’t as apparent today with all the rebuilds and such.

  • @freebrickproductions
    @freebrickproductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great catch! I'm glad I got to see one of these before they were rebuilt, but sadly, it wasn't leading.
    At least there's a high-hood B23-7 in my area though, I suppose. :P
    Also, the SOU's SD60s just really show how committed to LHF operation they were, lol.

    • @CentralPennRailProductions
      @CentralPennRailProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you mean the SD40-2's? The SD60's were actually purchased 3 years after the merger, but by then Southern and N&W habits were still around. Interestingly though, N&W started going short hood / short nose forward with new orders on their SD40-2's and other locomotives starting in 1974.

    • @freebrickproductions
      @freebrickproductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CentralPennRailProductions The SD60s, but I guess they were technically built for NS. However, it's worth noting that the SOU still technically existed up into the 1990s, along with the N&W and other predecessor railroads, as everything wasn't quite merged together after the two company's got under one ownership. Hence why older NS locomotives could (and I believe sometimes can) still be found with SOU, N&W, CN&OTP, AGS, and other reporting but in NS paint.

    • @CentralPennRailProductions
      @CentralPennRailProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@freebrickproductions Yeah that's a good point, they sub-lettered the entity responsible for the equipment. The CN&OTP still exists on paper!

    The SD60 is a good engine. Looks like the trouble-prone SD50, but what a difference. I think it was the first equipped with on-board microprocessers.

    • @CentralPennRailProductions
      @CentralPennRailProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, most bi-directional units had a horn on each end! I thought one would never see something like that ever again in this day-and-age of cost-cutting, but Distant Signal had a great video on the new CSX ST70AH's that showed a mini 2-chime K horn embedded on the long hood!

    What’s inside the high hood? Anything?

  • @Retired88M
    @Retired88M 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What was the big draw to have the long hood forward? Or is it reminiscent of the steam engines? For switching I guess it really doesn’t matter but for the long haul I would assume a low nose would be safer
