Conrail Locomotive Action on Local Trains!

  • Who remembers watching these blue Conrail locomotives? In 2010 and 2011, former Conrail locomotives were still abundant on local trains across the Norfolk Southern system! I caught 4 different H47 local trains on the Reading Line during this time that looked straight out of the past…
    I made a map that shows where this train operates in Pennsylvania on the Reading Line. I figured I would try something different, but skip to 1:35 if you just want to get to the train action!
    / centralpennrailproduct...
    In the previous video, we saw H47 using end cab switcher locomotives. • Listen to that Sound! ...
    This video focuses on Electro Motive GP "General Purpose" locomotives, which are a series of 4-axle road-switchers that are mostly used on local or yard trains. We’ll see H47 using both the 2,000 HP GP38-2 and 3,000 HP GP40-2. Both of these locomotives use a 16-cylinder EMD 645 prime mover, but sound different because the GP38-2 uses a roots blown supercharger while the GP40-2 is turbocharged. Carefully listen to the difference between 5304 and the 3001 or 3048.
    August 17, 2010: NS GP38- 5304 and GP40-2 3001 passes through Laurel (0:00), Topton (1:35), and works Lyons (3:20). A CSX Detour train passes at 5:06!
    Watch the CSX detour train video here!
    • CSX Detours on the NS ...
    January 11, 2011: NS GP40-2 3061 leads H47 west on the single track at Blandon with empty boxcars from Deka (8:00). GP38-2 5359 is also ex-Conrail, but was painted black in 2005.
    March 10, 2010: NS GP40-2's 3001 and 3061 enter the Reading Yard at BELT with a train from the Evansville Industrial Track (9:05).
    May 18, 2011: 3001 pulls H47 west off of the Evansville (11:00). 3048 then leads the train east toward Lyons (12:50). Not long after this, both units were painted into NS black.

      Yeah, man !! Those tracks were right behind my aunt's house on Devon Rd. in Moorestown. Her nephew (other side of her family) was an engineer dating back to Penn Central & worked that line often (he called it a "putt-putt" line, speed restricted to 10 mph....) They occasionally stopped the train behind her house & came for coffee, lol. As a kid ? I thought that was the coolest thing !!
      The crews (later on) used to stop in at Wawa at Forklanding Rd. & referred to it as CP Wawa....
      I once witnessed a derailment on that line, a minor one. There used to be a lumber yard at Cove Rd. in Merchantville (those tracks are now gone....)
      They were going to deliver a boxcar & centerbeam car there. The tracks there were a joke !! We watched as the engine derailed, then right itself (following/rear axles) back onto the rails. But in so doing ? Once the engine got back onto the rails it pulled the following boxcar off the rails for good....
      The crew were nearly against their 12 hour limit, so a crew shuttle picked them up there. But before they left, they said to me & my brother, "wanna see something neat ? Stick around...."
      So we did. To watch ONE MAN put that loaded boxcar back on the rails- BY HIMSELF !! It was cool to see. With a series of jacks, comealongs & lumber sections, he did indeed put that Cotton Belt double door boxcar back on the rails by himself. It was one of the cooler things I've ever witnessed.....

      Plus, CSX train Q169 was rerouted into Lyons, PA due to a derailment along the CSX Chicago Line (Mohawk Subdivision) near Selkirk Yard. NS 084's power, however, ran around its train at an NS yard and then heading back to Harrisburg or Rutherford to work before Q169 continues to its last destination.

      I hear you, lol. Not sure how many would have still looked good today. The SD70's, SD60M's and SD60I's still had fairly new paint on when they were acquired by NS.

    • @SilverCometMedia
      @SilverCometMedia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just saw a SD60I Sunday trailing behind an ACU with Central of Georgia leading, which is the best lashup I’ve ever seen. I’ve only seen 2 SD70s. But they at least should’ve done the conrail quality scheme on 8098.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK but it's only 23 years of history, and there's 22 years of those assets being part of NS and CSX, which is history, too. Many of Conrail's locomotives were themselves repainted from Pennsy, NYC, Erie Lackawanna, New Haven and others. So, if we're not allowed to "mess up history", then those locomotives should never have been in Conrail paint in the first place. I think the Conrail blue livery looks great, too, but why is it more important to preserve those specific 23 years of history, rather than the 22 years of history since then, or the however-many years of history prior?

    Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Conrail still a railroad company just run under Norfolk Southern and CSX I kind of heard that some Norfolk Southern and CSX trains are actually Conrail trains

    • @craigfazekas3923
      @craigfazekas3923 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some old Conrail lines are referred to CSAO in their route designations. The one near my old home in S. Jersey is called CSAO-20. Conrail Shared Assets, split up profits between NS & CSX. You will see both NS & CSX on these rails. Separately or in combination.....
