    Trains 21 is a documentary of railroading in the 21st century and a look at the fascinating world of transportation. On this channel we deal with all aspects of trains with a strong focus on the Northeast USA.
    The goal is for you to learn a lot in a short amount of time.. A major infusion of knowledge in just a few minutes.. And if those few minutes distilled some of the best railroad information in the industry, we feel that we've done our job..
    The trick is clarity.. Clear, concise and on point.. New videos are uploaded frequently and if you like what you see, comment, like and subscribe (in that order!).

    My top 5 favorite high hoods,,,,,No.5. Southern GP30s and 35s on the auto parts train "Spark Plug" as it climbs out of the OHIO river valley south of Cincinnati in the 1970s.
    No. 4. Ex NW now CNW high hood C628s working the UP in *ichigan. No. 3. Southern High hood SD24s on the SRCO/COSR(Southern-Columbus run through).
    No. 2. N&W GP30s with the bell mounted in the high nose! I caught a few of these back when.
    AND,,,,the No. 1! Back in 1978 CR was power short(again), so they leased several ex-Frisco U25Bs. These were the former GE demonstrator high hoods! I saw two of these running around.

    Fun video and catchy tune.
    I also believe the SR ordered heir locos long hood forward because if they were running short hood forward it was easier the the engineer to sight the signals, as he'd (basically) be on the wrong side of the loco - the signals being set up for the engineer sighting from the right hand side, or something like that....

    • @openeyes-411
      @openeyes-411 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed Phil - iirc, this was also said about the Alco C420's on the LIRR too, otherwise visibility becomes abysmal running LHF from the "wrong" side...

    • @sharkheadism
      @sharkheadism ปีที่แล้ว

      @@openeyes-411 Signals could be on either side of the track, depending on the territory of the railroad. That was the job of the other crewman, whether it was a head end brakeman, fireman, or conductor (depending on the era).

    The fact that they preferred long hood forward, makes me wonder what the hell they were expecting to hit on the railroad

    There was four GP38-2's that were owned by Ferromex with high hoods.Their numbers were 2004,2005,2006,and 2007.
    There is hardly any footage of them and it's from a long time ago at that,so their whereabouts and how they were present has remained unknown.

    Another fun fact, Crab Orchard & Egyptian RR in Illinois was the last steam operated common carrier in the USA. They were still serving customers with their steam loco up into the mid to late 80's until they sold the locomotive. They also had a wig wag signal too, not sure if its still there now but I saw it on google earth street view. Cheers Rob

    • @Trains21

      @freebrickproductions ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Trains21 Sadly the wigwag has been taken out of service and is due to be preserved (from what I understand) at Pioneer's headquarters in Minnesota. Don't think it's been removed yet, but it's no longer operational.
      IIRC, it was the last wigwag in Illinois.

    Just finding your site on you tube. Where does SP's EMD SD9's fit in this type era? There is 1 still switching in Albany OR. There is a video of it on you tube from 2020 or so. I used to watch one switch nightly at Weyerhaeuser in Cottage Grove OR.
