I think the reason why people think of shields as the defense piece, or rather why people don't use shields as offensive tools as much. Is because shields are heavier and require more force to deal significant damage than using the sword, which means that you're going to gravitate towards using your sword more often. In other words, it's less that people don't want to use the shield as a weapon it's just that it's often forgotten for the much easier to use sword for offense.

True. But also most people don’t train to use their sword in either hand. Normally they train to only fight with their dominant hand.
If we break that then it becomes easier to use your off hand too.

@@isamartell easier yes, but even a ambidextrous person still has a more preferred side to use. As someone who has trained in "karate" learning to use both sides is 101 doesn't stop people from gravitating to the side that is their dominant. Even your eyes have a dominant that is being used more than the other despite you using both equally all the time. It's just how our brains are wired to use what is the easiest/most convenient thing to use first over the one that requires more effort. Also take in the fact that logically a shield is heavier and generally has no sharp edges while a sword is lighter and is designed to cut to make the kill as quick as possible. So in that sense the shields job is better for defense less so for offense while the sword is better for offense and less so for defense. It's like playing a rpg min maxing your party and using them specifically for the job they were designed to first and what they can do 2nd only when needed. This is in essence the longer subtext behind my original comment. If even masters fall to this basic human function you can imagine what a generally trained soldier is likely to do

@@RubescentDragon When you do kumite you still throw jabs and strikes with your left hand right? I see no difference. It’s just people aren’t doing it because they are viewing the shield as a blocking device rather than a different type of weapon? Shield punching is a documented technique in period manuscripts, so why do we see it being done?

@@isamartell what I'm saying is that in the heat of the moment most non master fighters don't react with shield punches because there first instinct is to stab their opponent in the face first and only shield punch if the opportunity shows itself. Hence what I mean by "it's not that they don't want to. It's that they forget too" and honestly even masters will tend to follow this mind set because it's mostly instinct not micro second thought. It's the same reason someone with long legs will most likely try to kick you before punching you.

@@RubescentDragon I understand what you are saying.
I just disagree. I think that you don’t have to be a master level fighter, you only have to be told to do it and train accordingly.
The mindset that I refer to as what we have to break is what you are saying here.
If a practicing persons first instinct is to stab is because they were trained that way.

44:02 literally the reason why the whole "Anime can only come from Japan" stupid mindset comes from like in Japan Anime = Cartoon, and Manga = Comic /Comic Book" literally is used interchangeably in Japan. But you try and tell that to Western Fan and they will get all butt hurt. Too which I reply so what is Batman the Animated Series? it was a cartoon owned by Americans but for the first few seasons completely 100% drawn and animated by a Japanese animation company. So which is it? a Cartoon or a Anime? Answer literally it doesn't matter but because of Orientalism it somehow HAS to matter.

When it comes to striking with the shield there is a whole concept Dr. K seemed to have overlooked when constructing his program as it’s not something the really would bē mentioned in source material . So I’m glad everyone is discussing it. But the concept is boxing to the peripheral. This is imo over looked as of the western influence again of fencing from the tip in line vs fencing from the hilt off line. This is true for both the shield and the sword. It is the creation of displacements that are either empty or occupied. I will probably have to make a video and put it in the discord to get the concept across correctly.

      Definitely makes sense.
