The Unmarked Graves of an Appalachian Plantation

A family plantation cemetery on a hill in the Appalachian mountains has some stories to tell us, even though the headstones have nothing to say. The story behind the Isaac Mauney Family Plantation Cemetery in Cherokee County, North Carolina.

Really cool Ben! Some of the locations of those cemeteries are crazy. Every time I find one out in the woods, I’m like why is this in the middle of nowhere, but then I take a look around at the views and the peacefulness of the area and I’m like, oh that’s why lol. Isaac Mauney has entries in findagrave and familysearch with his picture. One son, Louis, was killed in the Civil War. Great video!

This is a very interesting story and great history of researching the names. I was born in Cherokee County and lived in Andrews. My family line were the Gentry and Stephens families from Murphy and possibly Copper Hill TN. You probably are familiar with the cemetery in Hanging Dog where three men named Gentry were killed during the Civil war are buried in the same grave. They were not supportive of the southern cause of slavery and were killed by local militia who were referred to as bushwhackers by my ancestors. I remember Mauney as a prominent name in Murphy. I believe there was a Mauney's Drugstore during my time in the 50s and 60s.
