Dave - Thank you for the tip about blowing out the console port by plugging the RJ45 connector into the ethernet port of a laptop. This is actually new to me, I've not experienced that before. (thankfully) You may have just saved my company some $$$ & trouble by teaching me this!
Awesome! I have two Cisco switches and a router sitting on my desk and I was hoping you'd post a video like this that I can watch before I went in and configured them. Thank you AGAIN, David! You are great!
Thank you David!! I'm graduating this April with a bachelor's in I.T. and I decided to jump in and change our switch at work (a small business) from an un-managed Netgear switch to a managed Cisco one. I'm doing several upgrades to our system too. I have done virtual labs in school and your video has given me the confidence and realization that I can do this. Thank you so much for the real-life experience you presented and for explaining things so well!! I'm a subscribing to your channel now!
Thank you so much for stressing your warning about the out-of-band connection. I'm starting a networking role at my company and I'm glad I will not at least blow some expensive equipment in that particular way.
Hey David! Thanks a lot for this video. So professional and let me say that you're really born with the thing. I not only learned how to configure but also how to use my devices. Thanks.
David thanks heaps for actually showing everything slowly and the great explanation both the hardware as well as the software and commands. Too many people do videos and they type everything so fast is difficult to know what is going on. Your video is absolutely awesome! Easy to follow as well. Many thanks!
I just needed a refresher on how to use console cables. It's been a few years but I used putty all the time but only on PC's. Now as mostly a structured cabling guy, I use team viewer and am just a "smart hands" tech for remote help desks. Great video Thank you
Thank you so much David you even let us see what problems might happen in the real world while configuring those devices it not that easy to find exact videos like these you still my best instructor in IT 💪

Thanks for your video, they are very helpful😊 Just one consideration that you are free to follow or not. I don't know well spoken english. I started to follow you thanks to the subtitles, you might consider to adding them because this and the previous video don' t have them. However i admire your work ☺
Just one teeny correction, during the 'USB Console Port' section, you said that the newer switches have a UBS port, and yes, they do, but you said that it's not "Micro" USB and that it's a "Standard" USB, but that's incorrect, it's a "Mini" USB. Standard is the large USB ends that we're all used to plugging into the back of our PC's and into wall chargers. Side from that excellent video, and much appreciated.
When i lookup rhis exact switch, i csnt seem to find it. I find ine for seiund 100_ and snother ine for around 1K. Coukd anyone please shwre me the kink of the correct one used in this video?

Thank you so much ... I like the idea of watching real life problems that we faced when dealing with our devices. when your computer’s screen became blue twice.
Thank you so much, David. I have stumbled across this channel today and love how you teach. I am hoping to become an MSP sometime soon and have been looking for this quality content for a week.
Thanks for the video. I'd like to add that these blue screen might be from using a serial converter with Prolific chips on it, that sometimes are fake. Best bet is to buy a converter that uses FTDI chip!
Such as a great video a new learning Engineer, you have share a first video deep details in total over youtuber, Its your video is different and unique another youtuber...❤
Thanks for the video Dave. So, I did this stuff years ago. I cannot fathom why Cisco hasn't created a "SSH" console port. I mean, I know why you wouldn't want to accidentally connect the console to your network. But a simple SSH port on 10.x.x.x or just requesting DHCP (but not internally connecting to the switch) would be highly useful. AFAIK, we used a terminal server device for initial configs. You'd SSH to this box and it had dozens of open serial ports, each connected to a switch in the rack. Nothing like setting up 20 new switches out of the box without ever leaving my desk.
They have other options like SSH / web interfaces on some devices. But, the most trusted and common way to configure is via the console. Agreed about the console server - I still have a 2500 router which I use as a console server.
Even more fun if you plug the console into a PoE Ethernet switch port. Ahh, I see the problem. You let out the blue magic smoke didn't ya? Arrrgh! I've only got USB-C and need yet another adapter! Son of a Boomer, I made many different serial cables to connect all kinds of stuff back in the day. I had a little notebook full of cable pinout diagrams. Crimped my own RJ-45 cables and used those RJ-45 to DB9 / DB25 male and female connectors. Converting RS-232 to RS-475 & RS-422, etc. Good stuff David, keep up the good work.
Truly Amazing David! I simply love your: "In the Old Day...". Pls show us more of your "Antique" colloctions; like the thick-net coxial cable, trans-ceiver and was that a vampire tap you shown previously! And of course that monsterous Potable PC in that episode.
can you please make a video about how to start in IT or about networks. I am a 17-year-old who is really interested in these things and I hope I will have a job in the IT area.
johnny come 3 years lately but wow my first time seeing what a console looks like. Lucky I don't have a rollover cable! I took a tech support job but am 99.9% sure they are going to sneak some networking tasks into the mix. Thank you Sir. "continued in the next video" ? where is the next video?
Hi David, have you or are you considering making a video with recommendations for a physical home lab setup? It would be great for ccna or others. Its hard to decide to go more modern like this 3560 series or go older and cheaper. The older have less features/older technology but the more modern is more expensive. There is a lot of choice so to help us and give an example setup would be great!
USB A to mini USB. The reason you are getting a blue screen is that windows is trying to boot from your USB A to USB mini as if it were a USB flash drive with a install of windows on it. Your bios is set to auto UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface).
thanks a lot sir! this is a good practical video it could be better you make another practical video that show how to make or configure a home network so that to access to the internet at home

I just needed a refresher on how to use console cables. It's been a few years but I used putty all the time but only on PC's.
Now as mostly a structured cabling guy, I use team viewer and am just a "smart hands" tech for remote help desks.

You couldn’t explain everything I covered in this video in less than a minute.
Well done: slow, deliberate, and repetitious on the cables. Outstanding.
Awesome vid. I just bought a used Cisco switch for 5 bucks and knew nothing about it. Now I’m going to play with it!
