    I've used one to cut much 2x4 and 6x6 from softwood. Always use your first flat surface to cut the other 3 sides. Turn around and walk the saw, slowly, down the log. Not fast but they work fine.

    That whole process was fascinating to watch. I can see that the tool helped some and yes please watch your feet. Love the outcome. The beam is beautiful!

    This was very inspiring. Just one guy, with one log to cut, one small milling attachment, a couple of store-bought boards, a string, and some screws. Not going into the milling business and not building and entire house, just one beam and several planks that you could make benches out of. You did a fine job of rough-cutting that beam. Now I'm inspired to tackle the log I have laying out back of my house, without investing in an Alaskan Mill or similar system.

      Thanks you! So glad I can inspire and help you to tackle a project of your own! Good luck and let me know how it turns out!! One thing I wish I did, which maybe you could consider, was get a chain for milling as I’m sure it would have helped out instead of just the typical chain.

    Instead cutting all the way through in an up and down pattern take multiple passes cutting a little deeper each time.

    I screwed a sixteen foot 1X4 onto a 16 foot 2X8. Both very seasoned boards and though the 2X8 was flat but curved off to one side at the last 2 feet; no big deal as there was plenty of surface on it to screw the perfectly straight 1X4 on top of the 2X8. The Timber Tuff slides great. You are right about the 'Instructions'-like instructions for many products on the market today, they are pretty bad.

    This one is made for Around 2X4, the one for 2X6 for around that. I have latter, the boards2x6 from lumber yard vary in width. Sometimes I mill Doug fir, and then shave the 2x6 to snug fit.
    Timber tuff edge mill, beam cutter is way better than some name brand. Made some nice redwood beams with it. The cast iron clamp though, will get chipped easy if the three Alan bolts come loose. Pound for dollar you can get a decent 15 foot 8x8 beam in 1.5 hours, setup inclusive. Very nice tool.😀
    I use either an Echo 352 or an Echo 590 for beams and table slabs. Works fine.

    Thanks for this video. My wife bought me a mini mill for my birthday last year (not a Timber Tuff). I want to use it to mill lumber for many projects, and this gave me an idea of how that will go. I've seen a few other videos that used an Alaskan Saw Mill first and then this rig or others like it. My first project will be a cutting board out of Black Ash for my wife, so now I feel less intimidated to try and do it. Thanks for that.

    There is no need for any jigs. Just two long screws, string and a screwdriver is enough for ripping any logs of any sizes. Freehand ripping cut isn't so hard to learn.

  • @keithrayeski3147
    @keithrayeski3147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If you do the other tree, pick up a ripping chain. You’ve got a good saw for a saw mill, power wise…just need the right chain so you’re not fighting the grain against the teeth of the chain. That’s the trouble with historic homes in most states…you have to maintain original materials and design for most everything. Personally, I think it’s worth it…maintaining as closely as possible, the original character of the home. Nice work regardless.

    • @Curtis1824
      @Curtis1824  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a saw mill and ripping chain ready for the next project. Our home is in a historic agreement, so it has to be maintained and built back with original materials. Sometimes a pain, but it’s fun to recreate what they did 200 years ago.

    I have that device and an Alaskan Saw Mill. They are an interesting concept, I think I like the Alaskan Mill better but you have to make sure the rails are mounted securely and square to the log.

    replace those broken teeth with 3/8 long self trapper screws. Good beam for first go with it. You had the right motion at the end, just pull the saw along stop that rocking motion that's for under powered small saws it is a guide after all.
