Tall law student, tiny house: bachelor builds dorm on wheels

  • When Joel Fleck moved home after college, he wanted his own place, but he didn’t want to pay the steep Sonoma County rents, so he decided to build his own tiny home on a trailer. Inspired by wee house pioneer Jay Shafer (also from Sebastopol), Fleck bought an abandoned trailer from a neighbor for $300 and began building without plans.
    To make up for his lack of construction experience he “over-engineered” the build, though the entire build cost him just $25,000. He found a lot of salvaged material and this didn’t include the cost of his labor of two years. Many of the details are custom hacks, like the swinging ladder up to his loft crafted from steel cables, chunks of 2 by 4s and “in order to eliminate the swaying I made it so it clips into the floor on these little airline clips”.
    Fleck is 6’4” so much of the home was custom-built for him. He gave himself just an inch or so clearance in his kitchen and a few inches while sitting in his lofted bedroom. His bathroom is a tighter fit: the shower is just 6’2” so he had to build a special box above it to fit his head. Fleck doesn’t see his 150-square-foot home as a sacrifice, but a right-sized home and study space.

    It's so interesting to see how different people make their tiny houses. Most people say "we had x-number of friends over for dinner and we were all comfortable". Joel says "I had a friend who was too drunk to drive home, so he slept on my sofa and was comfortable". Haha So cute.

    After watching this a second time, I wonder why he didn't consider a career in architecture! It seems like a lifelong love and interest of his and he did an *amazing* job with his natural abilities. Seems he's very intelligent and nice, too. 10/10, super impressed, super inspired, super jealous ;)!

If our generation thinks the same as this guy, the world would be a better place. I am proud of you man, you are creative, intelligent and more than knowledge, you do have wisdom. Joel, you are an absolutely amazing person!! Talk about setting goals and scribing them-jeesh!! Don't listen to ANYONE who says $25,000 is a lot of money to build this house-it is abundantly clear they have never really done a project like this!! Anything related to building is SO expensive!!! And to say they would source everything for free or cheap on Craigslist-Really..really?? As if the materials you need will magically be there at a fabulous bargain right when you need them!! Your house is warm-the first indication it is well built with good materials. Quality windows can be SUPER expensive-but so worth it!! Forget the naysayers-I think you are absolutely amazing!!!

I'm old enough to be your mom, but I really wanted you let you know how refreshing it is to hear a young man of 27 doing something like this instead of hearing whining about life and how rough it is. i guess people can nitpick details here and there and sometimes they're right but this is amazing. i've got tremendous respect for someone who goes off the beaten path to do something worthwhile and humble such as building your own home. and while many make fun, maybe because they know they can't do what Joel did, he doesn't care, lives his life without too much of the pressure society puts on buying homes and living large. i wish i had the motivation, time, courage, but mostly TIME to do what Joel did. i'm way too busy and lazy and unskilled to start learning how to build a tiny home but i'm definitely going to live smaller in my future. no need for ridiculous 2000-3000 sq ft homes and bunch of garbage stuff in my house. very inspiring vid, thanks for sharing.

    I think this guy should be very inspiring to anyone interested in building their own tiny house. He did this with little to no experience beforehand, which is amazing. I've been a builder for 15 years now. I started building post and beam homes in Maine and now convert old barns into chalets in the Swiss Alps. So basically, my opinion of his work holds merit, and I think he did a great job. He's shown that anyone with enough gumption can make their own, very personalized tiny house. The will to do something is everything. Where there's a will, there's a way!

      Most people don't realize how CRITICAL your environment is.
      EX:
      most humans dress BLANDLY (to fit in)...and then wonder why they're not happy!
      EX:
      most humans make their homes conventional and BORING...and then wonder why they're not happy.
      EVERYTHING matters, from lighting to the colors of your walls.
      For instance, if they played Motown soul music EVERYWHERE YOU WENT in society, you'd see more and more happy people.
      (Problem is, the Establishment does NOT want ppl to be happy, as there's no money to be made from that!)

    Very nice. Did a good job and seems like a really nice guy. I wish you could have asked what he thought about the issues of legality (him hoping to be a lawyer and all). Its illegal to live in one of these in Sonoma Co. unless its in a trailer park

    • @Dindinftw
      @Dindinftw 10 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      We talked about it, though it didn't make the video. Yes, its illegal to live in a house like this full time. Just like if you had a travel trailer on your property that someone lived it. Hopefully as a lawyer I'll do some work to make this area of law a bit more receptive to tiny houses. If I could put my house on a bare piece of property legally, I would be incredibly happy, and hope to one day.

    • @kirstendirksen
      @kirstendirksen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Joel Fleck I hope to use what Joel talked about on legal issues. I'll be editing a documentary looking at the topic (and more) in the next few months.

    • @fouroakfarm
      @fouroakfarm 10 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Honored to have a reply from you both, thank you. Hugely important issue. To build a 1500 sq ft house in Sonoma County is $30-50k in permits alone with months of hoop jumping and red tape. There needs to be a huge shift in how municipalities permit buildings

    • @cnypilot
      @cnypilot 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      How true. As it sits now, most municipalities only allow 6 months out of the year living in an RV/trailer/Non-residence permitted structure. It is left to 'civil disobedience' to deal with it. Plus, it really revolves around whether your neighbors are ..... JERKS. :) Also, it is quite a bit of work to actually prove whether you have exceeded the 6 months term limit, or that you actually do live there at all instead of coming and goings on your own property.

So basically yeah maybe it it his but like like it could also be the camera man and also that’s rude to say. How would you like it if someone said that to you.

    • @AmazingAutist
      @AmazingAutist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Clair Crow it's not rude at all. First of all, the chances are he's never going to see this. Secondly, if someone was expressing concern over my health, I wouldn't feel offended at all and would take what they said into consideration. There is a difference between "lol u FAT FUCK" and " hey, I'm kind of worried about you..."

Only kidding I have 2 sons that are very tall as well, the oldest just turned 16 is 6.2 and is still growing at a tremendous rate. To be honest when I first started watching tiny house video's I was put off because I didn't think these would suite a tall person, Now I think this would be a good option for my sons to take to university to live in. Also to establish themselves for a little while after. It does kids good to be out on their own, with out parents for a while too. Just to know what it is like to look after them selves. Any way good luck with your Law.
