  • At City College of San Francisco, a dozen or so students have formed a community, living off the grid in solar-powered camper vans at the edge of campus, building and maintaining their tiny homes together. Faced with some of the highest rent in the world, some say it’s a financial decision to emerge from school with a small savings, rather than saddled with debt.

These students are tough and very bright. Instead of living paying off debts for years they sacrifice and I bet they will also be able to live frugal lives instead of a life of waste and debt.

These are teaching them life skills, so sad that there are not any affordable housing. But I love that they are using initiative and making things work for them

the veterans specifically picked out SF to get the most money (they got $4k+ a month instead of $1.5k a month in other cities), pay no tuition (since the community college is free for residents) and they're living in a van to pay no rent. They would still choose to live in a van even if housing was $750 a month. They're saving as much money as they can. Not a bad thing at all. Smart, but something you can only do if you're single.

Would love to find a similar community in Sydney, Australia: student living in their vans. Because it's 'vanlife' with a goal other than "travel'. :)

i graduate in 2023, this is my plan. im only 16 but its a common theme with kids my age living in 2021 to worry about how we will be able to live as adults with high inflation and rising rent, food, EVERYTHING prices especially post-pandemic. Its a sad reality.

Future year I might enroll this college and I may want to stay close with our classmate when I can live in the parking lot in my self fit vanhome.

hello, you want to do a zoom meeting about college students living in vans. Not alone, with other college van dwellers? It'll be a lot of fun.

When I got into collage I paid ~28$ monthly for rent, no other fees required, and it was a 3 star Hotel. Well that's Europe...

Love it! Even adults with children have sold their homes and are building out buses, vans, campers, army trucks, the lists are extensive. So is not just because one can’t afford a house, apartment. Is so much more. Freedom, savings, travels and take your home with you why not ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 I’m definitely building out one this year maybe with a sprinter 🤔

I am familiar with the motivation to continue pursing a dream career no matter how the circumstances appear to be, for my dream to be a lawyer is a career I hope to have one day. God bless the homeless students to accomplish their dream career and a happy life. 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾

The cost of rent is outrageous who in their right mind would pay over 4000/monthly rent save the money and move

Hahaha saw this!!!! This was me!! Homeless while attending a 4 year.. i build up my rig and moved in with my gf.. she took me in and allowed me to pay rent with whatever I could afford.. she was amazing but like any other relationship, things would be rocky at times with her, so in case we broke up, I had a fully built truck that’s comfortable for me to live in in order to finish my B.S.. now that the B.S is done, this is my plan for grad school and avoid heavy debt

This is sad, the greedy landlords need to be badnend from charging so much rent, we need more rental reform and limits
