His grandfather is the happiest man right now. Seeing a kid of today work and carry himself as if he was from past generations must make him enthralled.
Just Beautiful. This young man has strong values and morals. The sad part is that I know people who are in their 50's and 60's who have no place to sleep or eat, because they are too lazy to do anything! This young man had the dream to put it all together, so he would not only have his own privacy, but enabled himself a safe place to be as well, and not be a burden in the lives of others. I'm glad he will be on the speaking circuit to share with others how they too can achieve such a inspirational goal. Amazing young man.
Austin is so far ahead in the game of "Life." He knows how to evaluate possessions and decide what he needs versus accumulating piles of crap. He has planned, engineered, built, and all those are confidence builders. I really like his grandfather: I would be incredibly proud, too. He's a solid young man and I hope he feels really accomplished.
My apologies to Austin for all the comments below that are rude, immature and critical. That is very typical of those who sit and do nothing. Armchair critics are a dime a dozen. You, Austin, are what the real America is made of. Well done and God bless you and your family.
Deb Fryer and sojourner...agreed!!! Although the negative comments are unneccessary, mean-spirited and hateful, they do define who YOU are...or really rather who you AREN'T! Austin Hay doesn't need your endorsement or approval. He's already won by not saying a word. ~ ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS!!! ~ Where's your video? Where's your Tiny House? It'd only be fair if we all had the opportunity to critisize and critique yours. Oh wait... AUSTIN, YOU ROCK DUDE! Keep on keeping on...the world is a better place having you in it. I, along with I'm sure countless others, would be proud to have a son that is as focused and as driven as you are! Huge props to your loving family (and Santa) who gave in numerous different ways to support and help you to become the fine young man that you are! Your Tiny House is a HUGE accomplishment and we thank you for sharing your journey!
I got here from a smack cam video compilation! nice tiny house though... I want to build a 3 storey tiny house w/ 5 bedrooms a theater room, an indoor pool, sauna, a gym, a cellar w/ smithing station.... oh! and a greenhouse, armory, library, trophy room, storage room, alchemy laboratory, enchanter's tower! best tiny house forever and ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My life is brilliant. . .
This kid has a bright future, whatever he decides to do. Grandpa is right to be proud. Most people this age are trying to decide what their 1st achievement in life will be & he's successfully completed a major project. Humble too
not funny at all ! some folks have their priorities in order and sex is not even close to the immediate top of the list! some folks don't feel the need to have sex with complete strangers but to share something this important with someone who's important to them! there are some who don't buy into the crap that's stuffed down their consciousness on a daily basis in everything around them...including other Opinions of what's none of our business ✌
Hey man, I'm 33 years old and have been a carpenter for the better half of 15 years. It all started with woodshop in high school as well, I just got to tell you great job on that. everything is super clean and well done! Congratulations on following through with such a great idea to save you money through college and beyond! Well done man!!
Oh man! The grandfather got me a little teary-eyed... wooooo, (clears throat) I'm good now lol. I'm happy for the young man. Good job, very inspirational.
I think this would be a perfect set up for a kid his age. Gets him into construction early so that he knows how to build and maintain a house, gets him somewhere to live for college and maybe a bit beyond for cheap compared to renting during that time, and he's mobile to find a school/job that he wants to be at. Once he's set up roots and is ready to settle, he can buy a full size house and still have this as a guest space or as something to pass on to his kids in the future.
MaxiiBoii23 like they said in the video most colleges have rv parking with power. or he could pay some one 100 to 200 hundred a month to park and use their electricity.
Those parents....OMG..they should be SOO proud of their son! I am impressed beyond words! A family, a grandfather, and community...all working to help a young man become a MAN, and define his future in a unique way!
Austin, if you read these comments, just ignore the haters. The internet is full of ignorant, hateful people who have nothing better to do than spew crap upon others. You did a great job, and thinking "outside the box" and doing things different just makes people jealous. You used resources, donations and family's help and you used them well. You are an inspiration and a role model for other teenagers. Keep up the good work.
thisACOUNTisNEVRused Or another language, I am Belgian and I speak French at home (I terribly suck at French) and Dutch at school. I learned English through Games. Kirby Back at 'Ya helped my English, but the best help of English I had was Vizzed.com. I learned English with these 3 things. :P
If you are 14 and interested and are learning now about building a home. You are going to do a great job when you finally decide to get started on your project. Good for you!! You can do it!!! The thing I liked about this video is this young man had a idea and did it. He did not let anything or anyone stop him. He found a way to do it with a little help, little by little. You can do the same!!! Thanks for sharing your dream/goal.
I wonder if this young man knows the potential he has. He could go far in the sustainable movement. Hopefully he's a business/engineering major. Good luck to him. I hope he embraces his gift and goes far in life.
+Fernando Aguilar Another reason it's important to remember that not everyone needs to go to college. Academia measures and cultivates a specific kind of intelligence, not all intelligence. This kid may not be college smart but accomplishing this feat at 17... He's definitely got a bright future ahead of him. :)
Absolutely incredible. I got a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. I have two teens and I have to say, it is so refreshing to see even one who isn't spending most of his free time playing Minecraft and looking at Facebook. Thank you, Austin!
Austin, you are a brilliant young man! It is disturbing hearing all the opinionated comments by people during the open house section, but you handle yourself so well. Your grampa summed up the kind of feelings everyone around you should feel regarding this feat. Way to go!!!
good job man, i was the the same age and at the time, you were building the house on wheels and at the time i was fully renovating a 1984 caravan. the sense of achievement was good after wards and the fact that you find your self doing things people say you couldn't do in the first place was great. because theirs all-ways nothing better than someone shooting down your ideas :)
If I was your father I would be very proud of ya, it's a shame that all 16 year olds don't have the same outlook on life, hats off to ya young man, good luck at college 👍
Smart kid. I know it's such a tough learning curve to study by yourself how to build, but it is fun as hell. I've been doing lots of things around my house, made tons of mistakes and had to start over from scratch. But to make your own house that's a pretty hefty achievement there.
I cant clean my room because i'm six months out of a wheelchair..... fell down taking the garbage out today leg gave out again takes ten minutes to gather the trash and take it out and I can barely do that anymore havent checked the mail in 2 weeks.... sigh.... I could never build one of these I had this idea back in high school but Ive always had weak legs due to birth defect sooo yeah living at my moms im 34 now and ill live with her till she dies then my sister till i die.....
This young man has great motivation! Austin, I wish you all the best. I'm a father of 3 and if there is one piece of advice I can give you (unsolicited, of course) it would be this-- helping others is great and a very worthy cause, but be wary of those who want a piece of what you have for the wrong reasons. This kind of thing attracts people of all sorts, not all of them are good.
He is an amazing young guy. A great attitude, a good head on his shoulders, and a hard worker. The future is his to own! His parents must be so proud of what he has accomplished and he is not even 20 yrs old. Awesome.
The amount of trash Austin ended up with after building his tiny house is shocking . . . I built a 2,800 square foot with a 1,000 square foot deck and I can't tell you how much trash we created. It took us 4 years to build our house and during those years we lived on the property in a 29' travel trailer. Living small was an amazing experience. I'm ready for small, maybe as small as 600 square feet. I love your grandpa's response . . . nice to have you as 'neighbors' ; )
Bravo!! It flabbergast me to see all these negative comments about him and his accomplishments.. He is an exceptional young man.. not a thug out doing drugs, dropping out of school, making babies and going nowhere with his life.. I wish him the best, and would be so proud if he was my son.. God Bless You
13:40 that girl says "like" constantly I wasn't even paying attention to what she was saying xD I think it's fascinating to see how much effort was put into that house and I wish him all the best in the future
I like no one mentions that free mortgage is that the parents are paying for all the utilities in that house and the free backyard space. Expensive hobby lol
I'd love an update on this young man. I imagine he's done well for himself. He clearly has his head on straight. Amazing what can be accomplished when you have a loving, supportive family. Well done Austin!
No matter how rich and famous I become, I want one of these. Not as a primary home, but definitely a place where I can go to, to get away from everyone else. I'd build it out near an outdoor oasis with an abundance of scenery and large intriguing canopies and rock faces.
Someone who manages to do like Austin did, is no kid. A man through and through. Keep that spirit up Austin, get a good technical degree in college and I wish you all the best.
He is so talented for his age. For some of those people questioning everything, they come off as negative and jealous. So what if it never gets on the road, it's awesome enough in the backyard.
I have yet to be able to wrap my head around how vicious TH-cam comments can be. I find them mainly to be from those without videos themselves, nor anything on their profiles. Anonymity causes people to be quite hateful. :)
Austin Hay and family, gosh we were so pleased to see the progress you made on your RV/House. We're so proud of you, even though we don't know you. Your demeanor/stamina/kindness and way of looking at life is a true reflexion on the wonderful family/extended-family that you have. Good look buddy!
I've been on a micro home/apartment video binge and i've noticed two common themes amongst the owners. They are extremely intelligent and extraordinary efficient. I grew up during the MTV cribs era or bigger is better and I never connected with that. These videos are very inspirational. :)
Austin, how refreshing to see a young man accomplish something so remarkable. You personalized it to your taste, considered all the environmental aspects (little waste), downsized your wardrobe and belongings, (no material "excess" or "conspicuous consumption", here) and you considered, thoroughly, the financial benefits. Your building skills are truly impressive. One gets so tired of entitled teens, and 20 somethings who expect everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. You are my "hero" and a wonderful example!
Give yourself a big pat on the back ! You did an amazing job on your little home. You should be really proud of yourself. I would live in it too. Perfect for one person or maybe a cozy twosome ! lol , All the best to you in your future , I'm sure it will be bright and promising ! I wish there were more kids like you in the world !
I gotta say, it's truly inspiring to see teenagers partaking in activities like this. It may not be an investment like a house on a piece of land, but at least you have a home that can travel with you anywhere. At least now you'll never be homeless.
Wow , this is incredible , if he keeps going , this would actually be a good business for him , just imagine building thoughts in 3rd world countries with solar power and everything , it would be really awesome
This kid is an inspiration for us all. In a world where entire families are facing homelessness, Austin already has a house BUILT BY HIS OWN HANDS! This kid's achievement gives hope to all of us.
If I were he his parents I would be proud he has already accomplished more than most of the teens his age. Obviously he planned and worked very hard on this project. He definitely has a good head on his shoulders and should go far...Congrats Austin Well Done.
I love the comment from the girl who says it would be funny when you "have a party"...as if you are any sort of typical, average, everyday teen. I loved your very matter-of-fact response. Great job, Austin. Simply great!
14:07 This is a big problem for me. He took the SATs, then they lower the audio so you can't really hear, but he didn't do so well... so he has to retake them. The initiative and drive to plan and actually build a house is more than most people, myself included, will ever accomplish, for him or herself (as opposed to doing something for someone who pays you). SATs be damned, this kid should be allowed to go to any college he wants.
I wonder how he's doing finding a spot at school??? It's 2014, can we get an update? Parents' yard is great, but finding a place near university campus? Any advice?
Good job, man! Don't listen to the negative things. You accomplished more before you graduated high school than most others will in their life. Awesome that you are a part of this housing movement.
Most want to party ...But what a fantastic job you have done here...I think you must have a gift, as i'd be very happy in your house...Your one gifted guy.Think your family are great with the gifts and support .
It was so cringy to listen to her talking about kids n house n shit at age 20 xD Like holy shit, breh im 20 next year and there's no way i'll settle down for another handfull of years
compost dont smell with your business in it. is a great idea this kid austin has made. great for college kids and he should make it a business to help other college kids and or families.

I don't know why so many people are on here talking shit - I hope I can be like this kid when I grow up, and I'm 30 fucking years old...
Well, buddy step number one would be to shave that bush off your face
RUDE BABY and let me just be honest with you, youre a bitch!
^^ Well her name is RUDE BABY! Duh.
Shaun's a motorbiker, he needs a nice beard :)
Be nice to Shaun, he's a great guy
Shaun Turner Duuuude, I hear ya man. Im looking for a 6 drawer dresser, but after hearing this story. Damn, Im thinking of just building it myself.
My apologies to Austin for all the comments below that are rude, immature and critical. That is very typical of those who sit and do nothing. Armchair critics are a dime a dozen. You, Austin, are what the real America is made of. Well done and God bless you and your family.
My sentiments totally - I think you speak for many posters here Deb.

Urahara1001 I like that. very true and well spoken vs all the other retards who just want to bash and nay say
Urahara1001 The thing is where will he park this 'house' at and did people suddenly forget about safety?
MaxiiBoii23 like they said in the video most colleges have rv parking with power. or he could pay some one 100 to 200 hundred a month to park and use their electricity.
+Sammy 1 thumb , Ikr... I smell jelousy all over the comment section. Truth is ppl are afraid of anyone who is inteligent and hard working.
I wanna live like that full-time, off the grid, hermit style.
I choked up a bit when I watched the interview with his Grandfather, What an awesome kid
Those parents....OMG..they should be SOO proud of their son! I am impressed beyond words! A family, a grandfather, and community...all working to help a young man become a MAN, and define his future in a unique way!

I'm 30 years old and absolutely not ashamed to say that this "kid" is a massive inspiration to me.
Wow, 16 year old him had the foresight to think about not having to pay rent or worrying about a mortgage! Absolutely commendable!
I am a 14 year old female ,and I am leaning as much as I can, so I can bild my own tiny home on weals . this video was a vary inspiring experience!
You should probably learn how to spell first

Maybe she is not English?

Valuable skills for a young man.
I really liked to see the Grandfather emotional with pride.
Good stuff.
I wonder if this young man knows the potential he has. He could go far in the sustainable movement. Hopefully he's a business/engineering major. Good luck to him. I hope he embraces his gift and goes far in life.

This got to be the coolest teenager from all the Universe. Pretty awesome tiny house!
This young man is quite impressive. it's nice to see his family and loved ones believing in him and nurturing his dreams.
"participated financially" I love it! What a beautiful gesture. Grandpa is so proud of Austin.
He seems like a really good kid, i hope he succeeds in whatever he wants to do in life. Good luck Austin :)
good job man, i was the the same age and at the time, you were building the house on wheels and at the time i was fully renovating a 1984 caravan. the sense of achievement was good after wards and the fact that you find your self doing things people say you couldn't do in the first place was great. because theirs all-ways nothing better than someone shooting down your ideas :)

I Wished I Was Like This Him And Build a Small House , Oh Well Im 25 Know I Brought My own House Hahah
The name, the spelling c'mon kid no point of lying about your age

He built a whole house and I can't even clean my room
+Celeste Rose For some reason, I have the same problem. Lol

I cant clean my room because i'm six months out of a wheelchair..... fell down taking the garbage out today leg gave out again takes ten minutes to gather the trash and take it out and I can barely do that anymore havent checked the mail in 2 weeks.... sigh.... Yay for the teen builder! Seeing the stages of development was fun. Thank you.
This young man has great motivation! Austin, I wish you all the best. Austin, dude... you are one terrific young man!!!
He is an amazing young guy. A great attitude, a good head on his shoulders, and a hard worker. The future is his to own! His parents must be so proud of what he has accomplished and he is not even 20 yrs old. Awesome.

He may be even more mature than some adults I've met. Great job thinking ahead.
But what graphics card does it have?
Bamistro but can it run crysis?
I heard it cant run minesweeper, But even a GTX 1080 cant run that so I wonder how Crysis does on it.
BX Gaming I could barely open calculator, was getting maybe 11 frames.
Bamistro Really? I had only around 4. Is your OC or something?
BX Gaming well I have the Home realtor edition, it functions on a fullsized house chipset.
3:48 "Enough headroom for me, I'm not going to be doing much up here" till you hit college and want a lady friend
She will have something to do the business
Lady friend won't mind as soon as she experiences the glory of shitting in a bucket.
Until she divorces you and takes it away in the settlement.
That's what the ground level bed is for, you banana.
Kudos to Austin's family! The support from his family is really inspiring.

What a smart man. I wonder if there was an update once he went to college...
he never did
Marsha Q he died
he broke
What
Marsha Q probably got hit with the harsh reality that it wasn't allowed to be in the city
I like no one mentions that free mortgage is that the parents are paying for all the utilities in that house and the free backyard space. Expensive hobby lol

Congrats on the mini home. Looks beautiful.
He is so talented for his age. For some of those people questioning everything, they come off as negative and jealous. So what if it never gets on the road, it's awesome enough in the backyard.

3:49 "only sleeping up here..." mhmmmm
Alex Pollack That made me laugh.......17 and ONLY sleeping? I'm surprised he said it with a straight face.
Congratulations for this guy! Instead expending money on video games and other stuff, he decided to go for building his own house!
What a great kid. Well done Austin. I hope that what you have achieved will inspire others your age and even older.

Wow , this is incredible , if he keeps going , this would actually be a good business for him , just imagine building thoughts in 3rd world countries with solar power and everything , it would be really awesome
I love that he said he had jammies, and then he's talking details about building a house.
omg, his grandpa's so proud, i'm getting teary-eyed T_T
Congratulations, Austin!! An amazing completion. Enjoy your whole life. You have a lovely family.
This is beyond awesome!
Dude, this so cool!! Way to go!
what a great job and a great kid. Most kids today want everything handed to them.
We need more inspiring young men like Austin. Good job and keep it up!
This kid is an inspiration for us all. In a world where entire families are facing homelessness, Austin already has a house BUILT BY HIS OWN HANDS! This kid's achievement gives hope to all of us.
13:30 she already talkin about kids! she ain't a keeper!
+Captain Africa she said the like word too many times i wanted to shoot myself lol...
+Captain Africa Well, what good is a relationship if you don't plan on staying long?
+Cameron Hufault This Kid Is a Legend lol
They broke up. She dead to him
I don't have a lot of parties in here because it's very small - Austin Hay.
Good Job Austin!!!
If I were he his parents I would be proud he has already accomplished more than most of the teens his age. Obviously he planned and worked very hard on this project. He definitely has a good head on his shoulders and should go far...Congrats Austin Well Done.
I watched this video just over 2 years ago when I was 15. It helped inspire me to build my own tiny house that I will be moving into in a few months.
straight up freakin awesome brilliant a** super human boy right here! I know that is one proud mama!!
I'm proud of him..
I know this is old... But he has some serious potential. Hope he still has it...
I love the comment from the girl who says it would be funny when you "have a party"...as if you are any sort of typical, average, everyday teen. I loved your very matter-of-fact response. Great job, Austin. Simply great!
This is very inspiring. Austin is definitely very special and gifted
Very meticulous of you.
Very nice, I think you did a great job! i am sure you will have this house for a while.
I wonder how he's doing finding a spot at school??? It's 2014,
can we get an update? Parents' yard is great, but finding a place near university campus? Any advice?
Good job, man! Don't listen to the negative things. You accomplished more before you graduated high school than most others will in their life. Awesome that you are a part of this housing movement.
Most want to party ...But what a fantastic job you have done here...I think you must have a gift, as i'd be very happy in your house...Your one gifted guy.Think your family are great with the gifts and support .
that dude could have some wicked seshes in that house
THE_MIGHTY_CHEECH straight up Gee bongs on and a cuply beers wont hurt

It was so cringy to listen to her talking about kids n house n shit at age 20 xD Like holy shit, breh im 20 next year and there's no way i'll settle down for another handfull of years
She said it's ok for when you are in your 20's but after that is when you start thinking about kids and stuff. Which means 30's....
