    This is my car. We were very pleased with the help we got from Richard and Christina. Since that day I have replaced the heater hoses, adjusted the fulton visor, and ordered the parts to fix the original fuel filter. And yes, it does say "KISSER" on the hood. The guy I bought it from did that because he was missing a "A" but there was an extra "S" in the trunk

      Maybe he took the S from the name on the trunk, and put a Z there from a Frazer.

    Kaiser and Fraser were around from 1947 to about 1957, i believe. Not around for very long, but they did produce some very cool and unique cars as you can see. 😎 Darrin was indeed the name of their stylist. The Kaiser Darrin was their sports car, highly collectable today. Ive seen some at the Mecum and Barrett Jackson auctions sell very high. One sold for over $100,000. And its interesting you mentioned the back seat and trunk area for space, Richard, because they were very popular with campers. They sold a tent you could put over the trunk and turn it into a bed, essentially. Burl Ives, famous for Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, owned a Kaiser Vagabond back in the late 40s. Very cool period in automotive history. Continental also made engines for tractors and airplanes, still do, i believe. AWESOME job getting this one running again, Richard and Christina! Thank you for sharing!! 😎

    Great episode you two! I learned a lot about these Kaisers. Being in the ARMY for 26 years, I've seen a lot of Continental engines but were all diesels. Didn't know they made gas engines for a lot of applications as I found them to be very reliable. Now I know why Checker cabs run forever, and I mean forever!

    Yeah they made a Kaiser Darrin too, a little roadster thing, rightly named after Darrin or Darren. Cool beans! Oh yeah that Darren had a fiberglass body I believe and the doors slid into the rear quarters, pretty wild for it’s time. I had a Great Uncle that worked at Checker, he was some kind of supervisor or foreman, but he sure loved his Checker cars, those things were built like a tank.

    I can still remember occasionally seeing those on the road when I was a kid. My father used to praise both Kaiser and Continental engines for their durability and build quality. I hope the owner finishes what you started. It would be really cool if the owners of the cars you start sent you photo or video updates that you could show on your channel. Looking forward to #50.

    2 thoughts,
    1 leave 12 volt battery in with ballast resister in ign to drop coil to 6v in run, and ballast in dash to drop gauge operating volts to 6.
    2 get an 8v battery, little more juice to the starter and coil, but won’t hurt anything. Been done before.

    That was my favorite first start from you two. It reminds me of my flathead 6, 1951 F3 Ford that is unrestored with 40,000 original miles. It looks almost exactly like that continental engine. I was just about to tell you to switch over to 12 volt directly to the starter when you went with that method. I only drive my pickup between May1 and November 1 as I live way upstate ny near the Canadian border near Montreal. Sometimes on first startup when it doesn't start right up I just hook it to the tractor and pull it and pop the clutch in 3 gear. Of course I can do this because the drive train and tires and clutch are all in good working order as it had only sat idle for about 6 months great job with that Kaiser though to both you and Christina.

    Wow. I didn’t know that the Continental was Checkers go to engine. Where did all those cabs go? 🧐 I’ve seen these engines in generators, pumps, and even construction equipment. Great job you two on getting this piece of history running and closer to back on the road. Thank you!!

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're welcome Glen. Checker switched over to Chevy engines at some point later in the production run, but the earlier ones were Continentals. Checker taxis were junked by the thousands in the 60s and 70s, and they disappeared quickly. Production stopped around 1982, and the last one in service ran until the late 90s. Most were long gone by then.

    The Kaiser pick-up / car that you are thinking of was called the Vagabond and Traveler...which this car is not. On those the entire rear window lifted up and the trunk was hinged near the bumper.

    If any car deserves a proper restoration this is one. Kaiser only made cars for 8 years, '45_53, and then joined up with Willy's to make jeeps. Hard to compete with the Big Three... 🇬🇧👍
