Today, Mayor John Tory and Matthew Pegg, Toronto Fire Services Chief and General Manager unveiled Toronto’s newest piece of specialized firefighting and rescue equipment the Bronto Skylift 70m articulated aerial unit, nicknamed “Tower 1.”
Tower 1 is the tallest firefighting apparatus in North America and, at full extension, the aerial platform will reach an elevation of 70 metres, or 230 feet, from the ground to the base of platform, which is approximately 22 storeys high. Tower 1 reaches double the height of Toronto’s next tallest aerial apparatus that can reach 11 storeys. The new apparatus will provide Toronto Fire Services with much-needed operational versatility and extra protection in a “vertical city” that is expected to continue to grow in height and density over the coming decades.
A recent report by international consultancy firm Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) found that Toronto has the most active construction cranes among 14 major cities in North America, having led the crane count since 2015. The number of fixed cranes on construction sites increased 21 per cent in the first quarter of 2022, with increases seen in commercial, residential and mixed-use projects.
The truck will be stationed downtown at 207 Front St. E., where there is the greatest density of high rises, but can be redeployed where needed to help with fighting fires, search and rescue, industrial emergencies, rope rescues such as at the Scarborough Bluffs and more. Specialized training of staff is underway.
Tower 1 will also provide Toronto firefighters with an unparalleled ability to get above and over top of buildings and to work around overhead obstructions that are common in the high-density urban areas of Toronto.
The high volume, master stream nozzle at the end of the platform is capable of flowing up to 3,800 litres of water per minute, providing crews with enhanced aerial firefighting capabilities.

Finally, a North American department that realises they have buildings over 100 feet tall that people need rescue from! So many have died because they were over the 10th floor and trapped above a fire.

Fire code for skyscrapers, at least in the US, is strict enough for this to be an unjustifiable purchase for most departments. Fires like the London Tower that burned a few years ago don't happen in the US because of these codes. Occupants trapped outside of the fire apartment itself will likely be able to shelter in place. This kind of apparatus would rarely, if ever, need to be used in most major US cities. I work in the US, not Canada, so I can't speak to the necessity of something like this for Toronto. But for where I work, no, nobody would want this.
I'm a truck guy, but not a 230ft truck guy. Bad ass tho!!!

Why didn't you guys just get the big one? The 365' and she will turn better with a custom cab. The Department I was with looked at the 265' back in the day

The truck I work on is 100’, I can’t imagine being 130’ higher.
What happens on a unit like this if the engine quits or some other failure like a blown hydraulic hose? I'm sure there is a way to lower it but being "up and over" as they put it would possibly be a problem
very outstanding vid. i heard about this wonderful truck. new standards needed for all the taller highrises,and regular towers sadly don't meet it anymore.i would hate to see people jump n die like 9-11 twin towers

As a retired firefighter I can answer why departments like NY or Chicago do not operate units like this. The main reason is the area needed to safely operate it. If you look the photo you can see the area needed to set up the stabilization outriggers. In old cities many of the streets where this unit would be most useful are not wide enough to set this up. Add in parking at streetside and there’s even less room. You can’t short jack something like this. It would be much too dangerous to not fully extend the jacks. The length and weight of a truck like this would not work just turning into some narrow streets in older cities. The weight of something like this can exceed 100,000 lbs and exceeds bridge capacity in older cities. Commercial trucks of this type of weight require special permits and special routes just for this reason. Incidentally this is not the largest unit bronto makes. One can be had that will reach over 360’ Congratulations to Toronto and I hope it works out well for them.
In some areas cities with wide streets you could use this but yes in NYC or Chicago with narrow streets it just wouldn’t be feasible

@@thomasfreeman7770 I would, but I feel like you covered everything I would have. In Alabama, Birmingham Fire Department switched to Brontos several years ago, and the extended height did away with their ability to half-jack, and since the outriggers were so long, there were many places they could not use them. Also, the higher operating heights required several more safety’s in the programming that there were many times on more serious grades that the apparatus wouldn’t even allow aerial operations.
They have since retired them all and gone back to mid-mount and tiller-drawn aerials. The AO’s are absolutely overjoyed they decided to switch back. Everything you said was spot on.
@@michaelthorin5718 Wow, you would think that the command structure of a department as large as it would be in Birmingham would have fully studied the pro,s and con,s of such a major purchase. With standard aerials around 1M today I can imagine the explanation they would have to give to the public about the funding wasted for more than one of these. Well at least the firefighters are happy now.
Why are so many people hating on this. It’s not meant to be used a lot. There are a lot of types of fire apparatus that aren’t used very often. Haz Mat, cbrne, foams units, trench rescue… every major city should have one a rig like this. It’s 2022 , all fire departments should be evolving and figuring out how to save more lives.
There isn't a wide enough road that isn't blocked with cars capable of facilitating that truck

Division Chief Rob Anselmi refuses to put real mechanical Q2B sirens on our trucks. He is worried they will draw too many Amps and will mess up the truck's electronics

The very first aerial apparatus in North America that isn't a quint? also goes higher than London Fire Brigade's 64m/204ft turntable ladder 👀
You won't find quints in most big city FDs in the US. Smaller cities may run combination apparatus more often to increase versatility versus costs. These include quints or ladder pumpers & squads or rescue pumpers.

There are more videos than expected showing this unit responding to quite a few calls than I expected.

Up yo game FDNY.
That isn't how FDNY works. They would not be able to operate a beast like this in those narrow old streets. They fight high-rise fires from the inside, which is much more effective. They have the manpower, training & experience to go wherever they're needed. Toronto is a whole different animal. The vast majority of their tall buildings are recent construction. TFS intends to use this apparatus mostly to aid in high angle rescue operations. It would be impractical for fire fighting at such altitudes. The wind coming off Lake Ontario at 200' in downtown or midtown is often very significant. Even at street level, anyone who's been in Manhattan or Chicago knows the wind between tall buildings can be fierce.
What a waste of money. High rise fires are put out from inside not from spraying water through windows
plus there's no failsafe if the ladder fails....I'd stick with my aerial with 100ft and a climbable ladder instead of 200ft and no way down
The first person that is rescued by this from their window will probably disagree with you. Also, you are describing an offensive fire, not a defensive one.

@@12345anton6789 Most of Europe called, they disagree. Most of their towers are 75 or 100 foot.
It looks awesome but I'd still stick with an aerial. Though it has 200ft I'd still stick with 100ft with a climbable ladder so incase of a hydraulic or electrical failure firefighters can still climb down and get off the ladder safely instead of being stuck 200ft in the air....
So you would completely eliminate the ability to rescue victims from about the 10th to the 22nd floor because there might be a mechanical issue??
Risk VS reward. The reward is far better than the risk of maybe getting stuck
@@joshastana849 Agree. Firefights are paid to take risks (both calculated and roll-of-the-dice).
The hydraulic system has manually operated valves that allow the boom to be lowered if the power goes out.
In case of failure, they will rappell down with ropes 😂😂😂.

Fun fact: Both FDNY and CFD have similar units. Chicago just took delivery a few years back of E-One built 137' rear-mount ladder trucks, and has operated 135' Morita and 144' Magrius (I think thats how it's spelt) ladders in the past. The FDNY meanwhile has dedicated rescue trucks called High-Rise 1 and 2 which carry all the gear needed to get people out, minus the ladder, hose and water. But given the FDNY sends 8 engines, 4 trucks, a rescue, a squad, 3 battalions, 5 ambulances, and about 2 dozen supporting units to every major building fire I don't think they have issues getting people out. Neither department needs to "take notes;" they paved the way and pioneered this shit.
