    "Mickey's Monkey" and "Piece of the Rock" are absolute bangers by Mother's Finest!! We used to go see them at Six Flags Over GA- they did the Labor Day concert there several years in the late 70s/early 80s. One of the great Atlanta bands that never got as much national recognition as they deserved. Another fun New Wave/pop Atlanta band from the very early 80s was The Producers!! "What's He Got", "She Sheila" and "What She Does To Me" are all great songs by them.

    They are funk rock metal legends!!! They are in the Smithsonian Black Music Hall of Fame. I've seen them live over a dozen times and their energy if great! Miss Joyce Kennedy is still rocking hard, she has done some solo and duets and should be featured on a female Friday. They are popular in Europe! Their album, Another Mother Further from 1977 is fantastic!

  • @malcolmr3
    @malcolmr3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They went through a controversial period as an all black band that wasn’t a funk or R&B band, they were a R&R band and made it clear that they were about rock. A lot of “critics” and even rock musicians of the time said a black band could never play R&R, they needed to stay in “their” genre. Mothers Finest then proceeded to record a punch back song called "Niggizz Can't Sang Rock 'n' Roll” on their second album in response to their critics. They were the first concert I ever went to, in Jr. High, and let me tell you they were DEFINITELY a rock band and they could rock the house with ANYONE!!! They had a definite rock stage presence and vibe, especially Joyce Kennedy (who I developed a major crush on after seeing them on stage and watching her MOVE) and had they been given the support they deserved from the industry would have had a career as big as anyone. IMO they should be in the R&R HoF based solely on their talent and would be had they been garnered the support they deserved. I guess the “industry” has forgotten who wrote what is considered to be the very first R&R song (Rocket 88 written by Ike Turner, recorded by Jackie Brenston) and one of the founding fathers of R&R (Mr. Chuck Berry), just to mention two of the most notable acts of all time.

    This is a new (and wonderful) discovery for me. I was swayin' too with you guys. 😄Definitely that futuristic funk of the seventies. I did a little reading about them. Wow! They toured with Black Sabbath and AC/DC, earning the title "the most dangerous opening band in rock" due to them almost upstaging the headliners. Whaaat?! 😁I'm getting a Nona Hendryx vibe as well. Love Nona Hendryx. I'm going right now to hunt down some of their other music.

      You got that right! The story is that, they put Aerosmith on the bus at the old Charlotte Coloseum. I saw Stevie Nicks there on a solo tour years later. Jerry "Wyzard" Seay was filling in on bass. She introduced the band. When she got to him, the place went bug nut crazy for a solid minute. When it finally let up, she looked at him and asked, "You live around here?" Lots of love for some MF in NC...

    I grew up with Mother’s Finest. Everyone in Atlanta knew them and loved them. Joyce has a stage presence like no one else. I saw them preform in Lumberton, NC which has a large mixed Indian population. Joyce did her homework and walked out on stage in very sexy Indian dress and a headdress that dragged the ground. The place went sooo wild that I was afraid the place was going to come down like an earthquake. Awesome group.

    I was a teenager when Mother's Finest released "Baby Love". My friends and I were on our feet the SECOND we heard Joyce Kennedy sing, "There is no other"...and already dancing by the time she sang "...to compare to you"!! This song still cranks just like it did the first time in 1977. 🎶

    Yes! 🙌🏼 I’ve been trying to get y’all to listen to them, I knew you’d love Mothers Finest!! That album is one of my all time favorites. They are still touring with Baby Jean (Joyce Kennedy) in her mid 70’s and just as bada$$ as ever. I’m planning to go see them in NC in March! Anything on that album is worth a listen - I suggest Mickey’s Monkey or Piece of the Rock. “Too funk for rock. Too rock for funk”.

    YEEEESSSSS!!! Mother's Finest....finally!! Baby Jean delivers EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. This song comes from their album "Another Mother Further", a classic from 1977. Mickey's Monkey and Piece Of The Rock are two more great ones from that album.

    Oh man, the summer of '77 was hot! This was all over the radio and Joyce Kennedy belts out this performance with one of rock's best female voices. Hard driving, emotional, gritty and in your face, the intensity she puts behind this track makes it my favorite cut from Mother's Finest. Whether on record or live, this group will rearrange your hair-do with a sound seldom found in rock music. "Baby Love" is one of those songs that, for me can't be played loud enough. The sound system that was in my brand new '77 Trans Am did it's best when I had this 8 track tape plugged in.

    Mother's Finest is what musicians listen to for entertainment.
    I wish my band could have opened for them. But the club that wanted to promote the event didn't have 3 phase power, which Mother's Finest required for their equipment at that time.

    Thought this was interesting: Mother's Finest was initially signed with RCA but eventually landed at Epic Records, where their third, fourth, and fifth albums were certified gold. They opened for the likes of Ted Nugent, Black Sabbath, The Who, Aerosmith, and AC/DC. The band would go on to sign with Atlantic Records, taking a break after their 1981 album Iron Age while Joyce pursued a solo career.
