Haven't seen the documentary yet but it intrigues me how passionate the comments here are!

There’s no way he was an informant given his offenses. The Department of Justice was trying to cover their tracks. Nothing more.

Bulger and Connolly grew up together in the same South Boston project.
It was a multual-favor relationship. He helped the FBI take down the Italian mafia. For doing that he was "protected".

This has been fully investigated and documented. Bulger was an informant.

@@jaed2630 only on the Italian mafia if you'll do some digging and find out the former retired FBI agent has said that they didn't really Whitey or Fleming it was other informants and people that gave information and then Conley changed the names to make it look like Whitey was helping he's getting ready to be another documentary coming out

The surreal part is....Whitey is in prison...and old Howie Winter is free. Reversal of fortune to say the least.

His buddy John Connolly tells people Whitey was bisexual. And his preference was black teenagers. That makes him a pedophile. Yes?

in the movie it says that he wasn't giving any real information it was information that other informants had already given

Whitey was in a Plymouth MA correction facility after his capture. There's Jordan Hospital in the same town, yet when he has chest pain, they take him up to a Boston hospital. Hmm! It wouldn't shock me if he wasn't murdered but will be with Catherine Gregory on the cape.

Robert Muller the special prosecutor that went after Trump was deeply involved in the Bulger case in Boston

So, as far as the "informant" v. "rat" issue is concerned...
For me, it comes down to the definitions of the terms.
In my mind an informant is someone who has "clean hands" offering information with absolutely NO expectation of receiving anything in return.
A "rat" is someone who is involved in nefarious activities who has an expectation of receiving something of value (to the individual) in return.
    I fucking hate "rats".

Which FBI agents where paid by Bulger?

Connolly and Morris are the only two that were known to have taken money from Bulger so far. There were probably others not mentioned that Bulger bribed, at least it wouldn't surprise me anyway.

If he was an informant why would kill so many people? That's insane

    • @FayeDom

I believe he killed so many people (business purposes) because he KNEW he could get away with it. Remember, FBI never charged him for anything not even petty crimes as misdemeanors.
