  • HubNut is all about celebrating the ordinary, and here's a Volvo you could be forgiven for having forgotten about.
This is a very late phase 2 Volvo 440 1.6i, built in Born, Netherlands and taken back to the factory as part of this road test! The VLD Nedcar facility now makes MINIs of various types, and BMW X1s. Coaches are built at a separate facility that I drove past yesterday as it happens!
Support 'quality' roadtests like this by visiting the HubNut store - hubnut.org Cheers!

Had one, it was a blue and a tad sportier variant with a tiny spoiler, likely a factory option
The first car I owned and learnt to drive in it too, was a fantastic piece of machinery, never left me on the road due to mechanical issues (unlike some other cars I could mention) - although the anti-theft could be a tad finicky at times, as occasionally he'd refuse to start because I didn't / couldn't disable it properly (sometimes it was as simple as changing the batteries on the remote)
The car has personality and I loved him very much, to this day, I feel very sad when I crashed him to a divider in about 100 km/h (60 mp/h) with the driver's side taking the brunt of the hit - as miraculous as it is, I walked away from the crash with just a scratch on my left arm. (I should mention that if I had hit the divider in any other way, 10cm one way or the other, I'd probably wouldn't be here now) The car was totalled, although he'd still run (and my dad would drive him to the garage) , but the bodywork couldn't be repaired to pass inspection
As a driver, I'm ashamed that I would make a mistake what would lose a dear friend like that, but I wasn't paying attention to the slush in-between lanes, there was water atop of ice - needless to say, my carelessness and lack of attention made me a passenger after I had made my lapse in judgement
I'm sorry, API-888, but I'm so glad that we had so many good years and thank you so much for all the good drives you gave (not to forget that you saved me from something irrevocable)
tl;dr - 440 is a great car and I'm happy to have driven one

You just don't see these anymore. The facelifted 440 and the especially the much rarer 460 looks like a shorter version of an 850 saloon. It was also the last Volvo offered with a CVT as well. Volvo had one final joint venture with Nedcar as they built it's successor the S40/V40 and the Mitsubishi Charisma at it's plant in Born before Volvo switched to the Ford C1 platform on the 2nd gen S40/V50. I remember when the 1st gen V40 was voted the worlds most beautiful estate. Still looks good today.

My dad had an H reg one until the scrappage scheme dealt with it, replaced by Hyundai i20. Higher spec, had air con (didn't work). Central locking (didn't always work). Electric sunroof (didn't work). Electric windows (had to fix them). Everything rattled. A new stereo was wasted because the speakers were terrible. It was truly unpleasant to drive. Scrapped at 70k miles, and good riddance to it, we sold the replacement stereo since it was the only part which didn't rattle.

Another great video. One of my best car purchases was a 1989 G reg 440GLE for £275. It had a manual choke and a cable tie attached to the bonnet catch sticking out from under the bonnet. It was gunmetal grey with scratches and no one would park near it. However it was extremely reliable apart from one incident with a dodgy relay, flew through an MOT and I loved it. It was also very comfortable and drove well, it had the 1721cc engine. Sadly the power steering leaked so I was constantly topping it up, eventually the power steering pump gave up with a bang and it was goodbye Volvo. If I knew what I do now I would be trying to source a replacement pump for it.

In 1998 the driving school I went to had a 440 and a 460. I drove my license in the 440, and I've never been in one of these since then, but that peculiar indicator noise took me straight back behind the steering wheel. Good times. I think the 440 was straightforward and easy to handle for a beginner, but the driving instructor didn't think much of it. "This is not even a Volvo.." is what I remember him saying.
Incidentally, after having owned a Nissan Cherry, VW Jetta, Peugeot 406 break, Renault Grand Scenic (ugh!), Daewoo Nubira and Hyundai Trajet, I have now settled on a Belgian Volvo V70 from 1997. It has the highest mileage of any car I've ever owned, but it has aged better than any one of them, so I'm probably going to keep it for many years still.

Great video. Was interesting to compare as I'm working on my Volvo 480ES 2.0 (Videos on my chan) with some similarities for volvos of that era (1994-1997). The engine looks almost identical as my 480 is the non-turbo edition (B20F engine edition), and the amazing early diagnostic port on the driver (in your 440) side top strut mount, small plastic rectangle with the white "probe" beside it. You put the probe in one of 6-8 ports and it'll flash an LED with any faults stored!

I had a couple of Volvos, a 1984 360 GLS, and a 1995 440 GLT. Both were nine years old when i bought them, and both served me well for the same lengths of time. A leaking petrol tank seam, when it was just short of twenty years old, put the 360 beyond economic repair, while the 440 was ignominiously mangled in a Sainsbury's car park. In a sense, both cars were an exercise in 'bangernomics'. Both cars, with regular servicing just went on and on; neither was a spectacular performer but, as you pointed out, they were comfortable and relaxing to drive. The 440 seemed to be a poorer bodywork quality, as the rear wheel arches began to rust.

Besides my Daewoo Matiz, I also have a Volvo V40, which was the successor of this car. Mine was made in the autumn of 1996 in The Netherlands and first registered in Germany in 1997. It's an estate and it was much, much better looking than its ancestor, the 440. It actually won the title of best looking estate in the world in 1996 I think. Although, the front and the grill portion is quite similar to this 440. I bought mine for 300 Euro from Germany from a lady that horribly neglected it (no real oil change for 55,000 miles). It actually had an oil filter so old it was rusted through and leaking oil. Mine is a 1.9 petrol engine with 140 HP. I changed all the fluids and filters and it's been dead reliable for nearly 3 years. You wouldn't believe some of the tortures I've put this car through (going downhill in snow so deep it was going over the bonnet, carrying furniture, sacks of corn, even firewood with it, going hundreds of miles through insane Eastern European blizzards). I just can't believe mine still works and it does it so well. The handling is great. The interior plastics are a bit brittle, but the interior still looks pretty good on mine. One thing I need to get sorted is the engine mounts because I do get some vibration on the inside.

I loved this. We had one as a kid, replacing a 480. Our family grew to 5 so a four seater coupe wouldn’t work.
Although I was sad to see that pop-up lighted 480 leave, this 440 had a Turbo. And 5 doors! And a clock on the dash. And a spoiler!
Oh, and it had the superpower to pop the speedo down to 0 whilst driving.

  • @torresalex
    @torresalex 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh, that was great! I can only surmise that everyone loves it when you review a car that has been part of their lives, as is the case for me with this video. I owned a non-turbo Volvo 460 and I loved it. Its 1.7 litre engine was actually really good for a regular car in the early noughties when I had it. It got great mileage if you didn't thrash it and would really pull on the motorway when you needed it. It wasn't bad in town but it was excellent over long distances, both comfortable and refined. The interior was a bit rubbish, I have to admit, the whole heating control/radio part of the dash seemed to want to come apart, but on the whole I found it all very welcoming. It had a lot of parts that were interchangeable with the Renault 21 but any more specific Volvo-only car parts and it would be tough to come by. Brilliant car!

I gained a lot more power and only slightly less torque, and the mpg was bearable. Despite it being base spec, it came with the obligatory heated seats. When it was pensioned off my dad bought it and drove it until it died. When it was being hooned, the 1.6 was rapid, the pull in second gear was surprising

My first car! Mine was a pre-facelift 1990 GLE. I don't think GLE poverty spec, but mine lacked power steering and central locking, most likely due to the model year. Totally different engine too!

I have an appreciation for the 440s & 460s. Not too expensive to buy either if you can find a good example. I'd really like a base model.
I understand that 400 series development began in 1978, by Nedcar (?) alongside Volvo Sweden developing the blocky 700 series.

Had one of those on a J plate many moons ago, great family car, and just kept going. Needed a walking stick to hold up the rear hatch though. A small price to pay for chunky safe driving!

Great video Ian..Remember a mate of mine bought one of those in about 2001 as an emergency car as his had broke down and was due to work away the next day..Quick look in the bargain pages and a trip to Wednesfield £140 later..Bargain!!..Solid and reliable..Ended up keeping it for about a year iirc..

A workmate had an M reg 2 litre high spec one of those, it was a nice car, comfortable, quiet and went rather well too, I sailed past 130,000 mile with not much more than regular servicing and seen lots of Europe on holidays, eat, so I classed that as a win.

Didn't inherit the estate, but did inherit a 360GLT. Hardly could afford any petrol at the time, but did feel a nice solid car. On the one occasion I could use it, handled very well and was 'lively'. Now as an aside, met Skoda girl by chance on Monday. She had exciting news, accepted by the Favorit club, and could go to their shows. Nice to get good news from the young 😊

I owned an early 480 20 years ago. It was the only one I've ever seen with a 2 tone black and grey leather interior. I owned it for just 8 weeks, before being wiped out in a snowstorm by a woman in a 940 estate.

So. That was really enjoyable. Good review. It's nice to see your own car being reviewed.
I got completely carried away with the comments but without further ado, here's my thoughts:
0:05: It looks so much better in that video than it does in real life, haha. I promise it'll be polished next time you see it.
0:26: Only necessary with the Mazda 121 I'd say.
3:39: Having also owned a Phase 1 I can tell that they definitely built the interior of the later models more cheaply.
4:05: Google 'popsocket'. I didn't like it on my phone but it's great to keep cables away from the gear lever.
4:24: 213200 by now. It's clocking up a lot of kilometers these days.
4:45: Though they feel the same the interior is actually from a 1992 440. As with the dashboard, the later seats are made out of cheaper materials and were completely falling apart, there was no fixing them anymore as the fabric had deteriorated so I bought an entire interior for 50 euros. Found a photo of the old (and only other) owner even.
5:27: Soon to be replaced. I'm so utterly very seriously sorry.
5:40: The only downside in the back is that it's quite noisy, other than that it's a very comfortable car for carrying of four people on long distances.
6:34: I don't want a subwoofer taking up space so this is the most reasonable option. 90's Pioneer 6x9's are usually great value for money. Also for those annoyed; I did buy an extra rear shelf for those speakers, I'd never ruin the original one :D.
7:00: I think it's the most positive feeling bonnet pull lever I ever had on any car.
7:37: It was completely worn out when I got the car, you could push it in with two fingers. I had it replaced and it didn't make the tiniest difference in how the car drives. So the French were right.
7:45: Weirdly it's always been that shiny, even when it only had done 94000 kilometers. It seems to work fine so I'm just going to leave it as is. Timing chain will be done this weekend though.
8:25: Ah yes, the B-pillars. Should've warned you about those.
8:42: And that starter motor is brand new. The previous one sounded even more unwilling. Idle on 440's is a classic issue
8:48: When doing a long drive recently I noticed the gearchange had gotten super heavy and sticky, almost unusable. Gearbox oil will be changed this weekend as well, there's something not quite right.
9:05: You just turned a feature into a bug, hahaha. I am sure you are going to find out how it actually works later on in the video.
9:21: It's also got the typical Renault roar on higher revs.
9:25: Happy to see you found my phone holder
10:00 That's literally the most nasty drempel in my village, haha. The BX got caught off guard with it as well.
10:12: It really is. 8, 900 kilometer trips are not an issue. It's also really easy to work with in cities though.
11:35: My previous one didn't have power steering. It's pretty heavy. Not as bad as the ZX though.
14:06: You are every so slightly underreving it when it vibrates, it underrevs much easier than many other cars, I really had to get used to that at first but when using an econometer I found out that it actually is more economical if you keep the revs up a little higher. Motor mounts are as old as the car though so that won't help.
14:30: It's both the Texas and the Wales of the Netherlands.
15:37: They are a bit random, after driving it for years you will know exactly when they won't. Fingerspitzengefühl. I prefer it when they don't, indeed.
17:01: I hit the unit to turn a light back on. It worked, and it cracked. I've had a new unit for years but I didn't really feel the need to install it.
17:22: And that's illegal, hahaha. Those laybys are for tractors only, so cars can pass them by. Oh well.
9:05: Nope, you didn't find it out. So that light goes off when you brake, it tests the rear brake lights for you.
    Thanks Ian! :D.

I hade a 1989 Volvo 440 for more than ten years. It was an okay car. Hade some issues with it but nothing serious. It broke down December 24, the day we celibrate christmas here in Sweden. Happy christmas for me. I sold it "as is" a week later and bought a nice 1997 Volvo 850 GLT. I would love to have a really nice Volvo 440 again. :-)

Ah - my favourite car out of the very few I have owned. _'Rust in peace'_ my faithful '94 green demon: ''M965 UST'' finally gave up after only 12 years of hard use by the sea. Yes, scrapped just over 10 years old! - It literally rotted away before my very eyes.

They were alright. My dad's best friend had one for many years. Believe it was Li spec. Have many fond memories of it. They have got quite rare over here. I believe the good old scrappage scheme claimed many of these in the UK as the latest examples were 12 years old by then.

Used to drive 1990 440DL, the poverty model. Was my first cars when I got my license, so I got good memories about it even it wasn't most reliable car. I later drove 1999 Volvo S40 which built quality was improved a lot and looked also better. Most reliable car I've driven and I am still sad I had to sell it.

Another car what brings back memories. The Volvo 440 was my drivinglessons car. I'm 2 meters tall with not only long legs but als with a long torso. I selected my driving school by trying to fit in the car. :):):) Nice car to drive BTW. I also took lessons in the Volvo 460, but that car is different. The driving position is a bit off side. And none of the body panels are the same with the 440. The driving is simular. Keep on reviewing cars, I like it a lot.

This vehicle looks very much like our Volvo 850 sold here in the United States. To many, the Volvo 850 was the last real Volvo manufactured before Ford bought them. Very rare to see any Volvo in red exterior. Love it's poverty specs of this model. 🤗

This model is a five door while the 850 (which became the S70, ugh) was a four door. I still see the similarity with the headlamps and tail lamps. I even think the the first generation S40 was Dutch, although I could be mistaken.
