An old work colleague had one of these in white, which suited the car very well. He somehow managed to break an engine mount whilst showing off - pulling away at full lock with wheels spinning, even managed to unplug the ECU at the same time.

This was the only car I could ever sit in on a long trip and not suffer sciatica. had one in the nineties and everyone used to comment on how quirky and 'spacey' it was. The front seat and driving position were the most comfortable car I've ever owned, even better than the classic Saab 900s I owned later on.
It was in a low insurance group and was a great option as a young driver for building my NCB while driving something nice and stylish. Performance was adequate, it was a nice, comfy, predictable and pleasant car to drive. Good memories of several long distance trips, including taking it to Spain and back.
Gear shifts were indeed a weak point.

Yup, the 480 truly was a stand-out car from that time, it came out a year after my (newly acquired) 1986 Micra, and could have come from a different epoch. It maybe wasn't as pretty as the P1800ES, but you could definitely see that in the design, and I love it for that. I had a 'G' 2.0 in white with full turbo kit (painted bumpers with plastic inserts, spoilers, etc). It was a great car apart from the fatal 480 flaw of a leaky rear end. It was generally considered to be the electric aerial, but I had that changed twice (expensive) and tried all manner of leak finding additives to the cavity but never cured it. As I lived in Wales at that time, plenty of liquid sunshine meant any rear passengers alighted with soggy arses. Eventually, the electrics became another annoying bugbear and I sold it at a huge loss. It was awesome when it all worked though.

"The suspension was all Volvo's own work..." And a damn fine job they did of it too, early 480s and 440s really did feel remarkably poised and composed for a fairly cooking vehicle, so much so that I instantly fell in love with a 1988/89 440 GLT that I looked at for sale once as cheap wheels (it was cheap, £150 for an immaculate car with a new MoT done by a respectable garage.) 1:40 "The suspension was their own work" - it was Volvo's first ever fwd car, so they actually enlisted Lotus with tuning the suspension.
2:11 "It sold fairly well in America" - it actually never ended up being exported to the USA. They deemed the exchange rates too unfavorable at the time. A pity since the US market was their clear priority when designing the car (pop-up headlamps to meet the US-only headlamp height requirements, 5mph bumpers and the additional lights at the side)

What a lovely Ami behind it?!
When you zoom in on the rear lights, God knows why, they made me think of a Reliant Scimitar..
The headlights (the permanent ones) slightly make me think of those of the SD1 as well!
We used to have a 440 turbo with indeed a Renault derived engine that pulled and pulled. Sold it about several years ago to someone who is still enjoying it without any major costs as a daily driver!
As a kid the Info center was something that came from a space shuttle. Loved it! Also amazing was that the main beam light in the dash was not blue, but gold when on.
Oh yes, the ride is indeed very firm and the plastics inside feel like it was injected in a mold with the addition of rubber. Feels very “cold” and squeaks and cracks appear easily in the dashboard.
They indeed give the feel that they are designed to do some mileage and long cruises!
Your conclusion, about the looks being the only major advantage of the 480 over the 440, is spot on to me!
Lovely brown Clubman next to the Golf in the parking lot where you parked at the end.

The early ones were a bit temperamental, but this biggest problem was water leaks, without knowing the spare wheel well would fill with water & when it had filled up it all came sloshing into the front footwells a bit like a mini Tsunami, the later one's were pretty good, especially the Turbo but the best was the 2.0 which had plenty of power & were very economical,Great Review Hubnut

Glad to hear that I am not alone regarding Belgian driving prowess! Back in the mid 1980s I used to drive to Brussels and back from Dover. Tailgating and dodgems-style overtaking was mandatory it seemed. Sounds like little has changed.

Another highly unusual auto we Americans never received!
I'm getting to the point where low is fine for the young, not for someone like myself who is middle aged.
It does look like a touring coupé more than a GT, especially in this form, but looks perfectly fine to be a daily driver.

The car was initially intended also to the US. Note the extended front bumper (like Ian said) and the rar side markers. But it never got there. Maybe you can import one now under de 25 year rule.

@@joaorodrigues8757 I believe so! I have seen several 2CV'S for sale on eBay as well as a CX, which was a special import.
And you can see there is a demand for CLASSIC American vehicles as well!

The thing about Volvos is that in the mid 2000's they started to look more "japanese" for lack of a better word, with the weird droopy headlamps (C30 after the facelift). The newer designs again wink back to the more blocky square-ish designs, though maybe currently a bit to Audi-esque. This does fit the brand better though, in my opinion.

Mustang content in a Hub Nut video.....whatever next!?!?! (actually, a review of a '74-'78 Mustang II would be proper Hub Nut material, especially if its the 4 or 6 cylinder version :) As for the Volvo....always liked 'em for being different. Top video as usual, Ian!

Love the Dutch road infrastructure, like the roundabouts in this video. Proper lines painted or lanes segregated. Would be useful in UK as folks have trouble navigating those.

    • @acciid
      @acciid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah but the guy in the Mustang ignored the lines. Which is pretty much what people do here when lines are painted on roundabouts.

    • @JJVernig
      @JJVernig 5 ปีที่แล้ว

It's just because we don't know how to drive on multi-lane roundabouts. People using the right lane, and take the third exit, always! It also takes up more space. The driving on roundabout with traffic lights are better, because people know these and use the right lanes.
But some things, like painting the roadnumber on the lanes are much better in the UK.

Have been watching your videos for a while after coming over to your channel after a mention by James at Chops Garage. Thought I'd have a look through your old videos and have watched quite a few now. I got offered a 480 for just £20 before it went to scrap (was a part ex at a local garage) unfortunately I was too young to drive at the time (17 or 18 years ago) and had nowhere to store it so unfortunately it met its final destination at the scrapyard in the sky!

I much enjoyed your review Hubnut! I had a 480ES as a company car and loved it. The pop up headlamps were a giggle and the info centre was interesting. I really enjoy your channel as you seem to test drive all the cars I used to own including a Nissan Laurel - all the obscure stuff. If you could track down and test drive a Rover 800 Sterling Coupe (the V6 version) or a Volvo C70 coupe, other company cars I was lucky enough to drive, I would chuckle!

He figured they were so cheap he could just bin them when they failed. However he finds them easy to work on - parts are accessible....................he has six of the buggers now ha ha ha

I had one of those! Really nice drive, very comfortable. The interior was very homely, lots of textiles. I felt really cool driving the 480. I loved some of quirky features, the info centre and when you lifted the door handle from the outside, there was a green light in the key hole so you’d know where to put it even in darkness (this was way before remotes). If you turned on the full beam before exiting the car, it remained on for 30 seconds or so to guide you to your house and reveal any bad guys lurking about. After the 480, I bought an Audi which caused a lot of funny jokes from my colleagues at work (seemingly well versed in the history of car brands). ”So you’re going from a DAF to a DKW? When are you going to get a proper car?!” :-) Still, the 480 is one of the few cars I actually miss.

I had a 1989 one in the same colour and I loved it. Had a few issues with it at first, but once they were sorted it was a great car. I found it very comfy and the gearbox, although a bit clonky was nothing like the one in your video, I must have had good bushes :) Once you press the throttle pedal past the resistance point and it opens up the 2nd butterfly on the carb I found it really went pretty swiftly for a 1.7 litre and it was pretty econimical too.

I loved these cars when I was a kid, thought it was a fantastic design and a huge departure for Volvo. This is way before the T5 appeared and Volvo suddenly became cool, so it must have been a huge risk for them. I'd still love one now, only it would obviously have to be a turbo. I haven't seen a 480 for for years.

I'm a little bit young. I totally forgot about these cars. From memory these didn't really sell that well here in NZ. They were known to be a bit of an oddball car and quite expensive for what it was. I think it was known to be a luxury compact car that didn't stand out in anyway. And we had heaps more better options from Japan.

Always loved this car and the P1800, 1800S and 1800ES and also the similar looking Honda CRX? with pop-up headlights too, that I was thinking of buying, (instead I brought the Rover 820ES).
