Old Volvo vs New Volvo, 440 vs V90. Buy Vs Hire - Which do you take on holiday?

  • Hello everyone,
    Today Lawrie asks the question of is it better to buy a car, or to hire one.
    So armed with 500 quid he went to the internet to buy a car, and Morgan went to see what he could hire.
    This video was shot in 2022, and the 440 was acquired before the second hand car market got super expensive.
    A video featuring:
    Lawrie - Presenter, rather smitten with his new Volvo,
    Morgan - Presenter, convinced this is all a stupid idea.
    Matt - Cameraman, secretly a fan of the 440.
    An edit by Lawrie

    Normal that the lights come on on Swedish cars of this vintage. All my dad’s Saabs did this - daytime running lights are obligatory in Sweden . My 2004 9-5 however doesn’t.
    So good to see you Matt and Morgan out and about again. 😂 This was a riot. Thanks guys 👍
    As for the modern Volvo, it seems like most modern cars the driving experience is just… dull. No feedback from the car. As you said Lawrie « I feel detached from it ». Says it all really. 440 for me any day !

While i think it's really a good car, it was also the first car i would not buy for the boredom factor, simply because i do not need an unobtrusive car in my life that i can drive every single day without getting a bit annoyed with noise, vibrations, effort it takes to drive it and such things.

    The 440 and 480 share the same platform, meaning while the 480 might remind you of a CRX in terms of looks, it drives like a 440. It also has Renault engines which were adjusted in Weissach by Porsche and the rear axle is from Lotus, which is one hell of a weird combination for a car like this.
    My uncle had a 440 from new for over 15 years or so, then he switched to a VW Polo 9N which he gave back after having trouble all the time and ended up with Kia Picantos (now on his 2nd), as Volvo didn't produce affordable small cars anymore.
    As for the modern one: It's not so much the car specifically as new cars in general which just miss my taste.
    Overall I'm unexited to begin with, since they're more or less the same bar very few exceptions. Being indifferent about something rather expensive means every annoying detail just makes it feel worse, while I wouldn't care about it if I'd buy the same car in 20 years for a few hundreds.
    The only thing I really hate are all those screens and driving assists. Nobody with half a braincell would type something on their phone while driving, but somehow it's acceptable to stare at a screen to type in your desired temperature and what-not.
    The assist systems are IMO dangerous, because they just don't work reliable. I once test drove a car with a brutal lane assist to the point where it almost crashed me into a barrier at a construction site because it wanted to stick to the white lines rather than the (somewhat dirty) yellow ones. Since it's gonna work fine (or not at all) 99% of the time, you don't expect some force going trough the steering wheel seemingly at random.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That future plan is false, mate, in 20 years from now there woun't be *any* of these newbies left to buy, even for a quid. - Even if left in a dry carpark, they'd all be eroded by the wind.

    • @MadIIMike
      @MadIIMike ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jayswarrow1196 Well, you're most likely right. To be honest, when I think about "modern car I might buy in the future", many cars I'd have in mind are already 10+ years old.
      If we talk 2023 cars, there might be top end luxury/sportscars retaining value outside "our" reach all the way till it goes up again.
      As far as normal cars go, they've become a real pain to repair. Even leaving quality itself aside, it will be a nightmare to meet the MOT (TÜV) requirements of all the emission and assistance tech, unless it becomes accessible (or your country allows you to disable it).
      I know BMW has already started "pairing" gearboxes to cars, meaning if your 2022 BMW needs a new gearbox in 2040, you can't just install one from the scrapyard without going to BMW. As for the software, AFAIK not even BMW Motorsport customers have access to it, at least not the smaller teams.
      ... maybe I should get a shed myself and hoard older cars.

    Super video as always, great addition to the fleet of vehicles. Not a fan of the automation in modern cars either. The lights are indeed a Volvo thing that you can't turn them off, this is due to it being law in Sweden for them to be on anytime of day.

    Lane assist is terrifying in motorway roadworks when they've not fully burned off the old white lines. My works hire car tried to steer me and a colleague into some armco because it had a shit fit 😂 cool tech but you've got to be clued up on how it works!

    • @lmm

      I have lane assist, in VW group cars its surprisingly hard to turn off. It makes you a bad driver because you cant turn it off and the lots of tiny corrections it makes means when you drive a "normal" car you end up waving all over the place. It has collision detection which I think is a good thing provided you have a brain and dont see it as a part of driving you dont need to think about. It came on for me once when I was checking blind spot to change lane on motorway and the guy in front slammed on, so feel it has earned its keep. Adaptive cruise control is like the worst of all worlds and should be banned

    Modern Volvo cars are lovely, but that is a fine motor vehicle. Volvo have always had a soft spot in my heart, especially with legends like the T5.
    I am fascinated by The northern European guys do with the old red blocks with massive turbos, massive horsepower, even the Volvo Penta boat engines.
    I think if I was to get a turbo brick that isn’t a 850 replica touring car. It would probably be a old 740 or even a 240 with more Turbo than engine, but I am a masochist
    As others have said any car below £1000 now is a win my little diesel Fabia was just over £1000. You can get one for less than 1500 even three grand now and now it’s starting to get tired. I need to put about that amount in just to keep it going.

    Take a group of newish cars and remove the badges. Can you name the manufacturer and model even if you have the physical car available? Then take a number of silhouettes of 1970s era UK cars and you should be able to name all of them. Cars were really different then and easily identifiable. That says a lot.

    I don’t know why but I kind of like the 440 because it’s quite literally just a car. Ask a child to draw a car and he’s more than likely going to draw a boxy 4-door sedan. Morgan was both wrong and right when he said it’s a boring car. It’s quite literally so boring that it’s fun.
