WELL BLOW ME DOWN! The Story of Formula One's Blown Diffuser Years (2010-2011)

  • Hahaha, blown diffusers go bbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpppppppppppppppp
    But not strictly a Red Bull invention. It had been tried before in the 80s and 90s but fell out of favour. But when Red Bull and Renault managed to get the exhausts to blow on throttle idle as well as while on the throttle, they became THE thing to have.
    So how did it all start and how did it work? Let's have a look.
    Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

    Speaking of driving one-handed, Schumacher spent a lot of time racing one-handed as he was constantly adjusting the brake balance wheel multiple times a lap.

      I remember seeing onboard footage of him doing that and literally found it insane how he was able to do it all, but then remembering where his racing career started, along side how he raced Mercedes prototype cars at Le Mans too, he had probably perfected one handed driving already much prior coming to Formula One.

      @@Cynderfan35I mean I don't think formula3000 went to sequential transmissions until the late 90s, so the whole field knew how to drive one handed with a 6 speed while messing with biases and fuel mixtures. Schumi, rest his soul, really expanded into the inter-corner differential/traction control adjustments which is pretty ground breaking at the time.
      Interesting side note: Martin Brundle broke his left leg in a sports car accident and when he came back to F1, as all the cars were going sequential, he was one of the only drivers who still right foot braked as he didn't have the strength in his left leg. Always wondered if it kept him from getting a win

    The teams used their hands to control the F-duct because the safety cells had all been homologated at the start of the season, and they couldn't change it mid season. Only the Mclaren tub was homologated with a vent flap hole down near the leg.

    Newey. I never cease to be impressed by his mind. He's done it again, as far as Gary Anderson is concerned over at The Race. I read a piece over the weekend where he went over how the whole rear of the Red Bull car, not just the DRS, is optimised for drag. So where Lotus/Team Enstone and Mercedes wound people up with Double DRS a decade ago, now Red Bull bring us... Triple DRS!
    I like Formula 1 and engineering, and when...

    • @SadMarinersFan

      I wouldn't be surprised if something with the rear wing is also stalling the diffuser when the DRS opens.

    • @pbutok
      @pbutok ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Gary Anderson is about as clued up about Modern F1 aerodynamics as your average primary school student. The man worked in the industry before computation fluid dynamics was even a thing, I wouldn’t really trust anything he has to say on the matter. In the industry there’s a well known phenomenon called the inverse Gary Anderson law, the idea being if Gary Anderson says something then you can normally assume the inverse is true.

    • @halofreak1990
      @halofreak1990 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main key to Red Bull's current performance is the way the highly intricate floor and suspension interact to produce the same amount of downforce that other teams can only achieve by running big wing angles or running the car so close to the ground that it causes porpoising. On top of that, there's some aerodynamic magic happening between the beam wing and the DRS system opening, that increases the effective drag reduction on an already low drag car.

It's kind of a lost art here in the US with Indycar and NASCAR, now that they are essentially Spec Series. I miss the days of a Turbine engine showing up for Qualifying at the Indy 500 or some manufacturer designing some crazy car for the retail market, so it qualifies to run in NASCAR. At the end of the day though, it makes me happy to know there still is a cat and mouse game going on.

    It was interesting, I've been rewatching the 2011 season (rewatching Seb's dominant years since he was my favorite) and the first year of the DRS was at a point where it wasn't a 'free pass' system because the rear wings were so narrow back then, and the DRS slot was very small. It worked better than it does now imo, and I wonder if 85mm is too big these days and should return to the 'letter box' style.

    The original blown diffusers requiring actual physical exhaust pipes running to the diffuser and not just aero wizardry like the 2010’s versions were banned mid season in 1994 if I recall correctly.
    The Williams one was the best one (it was their front wing that kept stalling that made the A-spec FW16 such a beast to drive).
    The Benetton one was a bit more delicate. The downforce it generated was a lot more binary and it was thus hard to get it switched on unless you were a confident left foot braker, allowing you to keep the throttle open mid corner with more precision.
    Schumacher was, Lehto and Verstappen senior were not. Lehto’s neck injury pre season was as a result of a smash were the B194 basically just snapped on him at speed…

    As an engineer currently working in F1 I would just like to point out when people use terms like ‘newey found a loophole in the regulations’, ‘newey had managed to exploit a hole in the rulebook’. That isn’t really how it works.
    Those loopholes where not found by Adrian Newey. They would have been found by an aerodynamicist assigned to working on that specific area of the car.
    Every F1 team, including Red Bull is a team of 500-1000 people. A team like redbull has an aerodynamics department of over 100 people not just an Adrian Newey. I know from friends who work at red bull that Adrian Newey is an extremely good leader, he’s good at pushing overall concept directions based on data and suggestions presented to him and most importantly he understands that aerodynamics is king in F1 and commands enough respect from the entire technical department to dictate compromises in the name of aerodynamic performance.
    What people don’t realise about modern f1 is the level of detail which goes into every tiny thing on every car. That blown diffuser program by red bull was likely the result of 6 months work by a team of maybe 15-30 people compromising of external aerodynamicists working on the area, internals and cooling aerodynamicists working on the cooling, composites guys, mechanical engineers, system engineers etc etc etc. Getting the concept to where it was on track will have likely taken 3-4 wind tunnel programs compromising of maybe 5-10 30 minute runs. It will have required installation of systems on the wind tunnel model to simulate blowing at different exhaust flow rates. A lot of very clever people will have worked 60 hour weeks to get that concept over the line and transform it into a race winning car.
    It can be very easy from the outside to point at one person (wether that’s Adrian, James Allison, brawn or even Dan fallows at the Aston team) and think they are entirely responsible for the fortunes of their respective teams. To some extend this is true, but it’s often more from an organisational, cultural perspective rather than those guys coming up with the ideas themselves. For every Newey there are a hundred engineers who work their asses off to make a great car and they deserve their praise when things go well just as much as the front men.
