The way the stewards/race director/FIA handled the mirror situation was completely ridiculous, but there is no excuse for Lando regarding his penalty. The rules are there and are - in this case - as clear as day. He failed to spot both the light and the double waved flags which meant he had to lift off, and the penalty for not lifting off is a stop and go penalty. An unfortunate mistake, but a mistake nonetheless and so he had to face the penalty for it.
@@wreagfeI said the RULES are clear as day, which is that failing to slow down for double waved yellows result in a time penalty. Whether you think the rule should exist or not is a separate matter, but the fact is those are the rules, as acknowledged by Norris and McLaren themselves. Also acknowledged by Norris and McLaren is that he failed to come off the throttle for those double waved yellows and thus broke the rules that exist. For breaking those rules there is a defined penalty which Lando received. McLaren (and Sky Sports) don't like the rule as it is written, and think there should be more flexibility and circumstances should come into it, which is absolutely a reasonable view to have, but they acknowledge that right now the rule exists as it does and there can be no complaint. It was a silly and unnecessary mistake for Lando to make.
@@MrArchie800consistency is always a frustrating issue in any sport. In the case of Lando's penalty you would think given there is a fixed rule, and a fixed penalty, regarding slowing through double waved yellows that this would be something they could get right 100% of the time.

One positive of the race is that the gravel traps certainly did their jobs. Prevented drivers from taking advantage of track limits as well as made for good self policing wheel to wheel racing.

Although the penalty was too harsh, Lando did destroy Max's well managed undercut window of almost 2 seconds, gaining some 0.6 seconds by not lifting when Max did lift at the double yellow. Of course Max was surpirsed and reported it. Lando suddenly was close to a DRS distance.
Lando completely ignored a double yellow mind you. He kept full throttle the whole straight. I mean, you can’t ignore that. The penalty was too harsh no doubt. But ignoring a double yellow completely is always a penalty
It's not too harsh, it's not getting an advantage leaving the track or something like that, it was a direct break of safety rules and procedures, the penalty is given in according to that, and lewis' penalty of drive thru the same, speeding in the pit lane, safety impediment.
It's always been a stop go penalty. People these days are too jaded by 5 and 10 second time penalties being the norm. Back in the day drive through and stop go penalties used to be the standard, and they work far better as a deterrent.
Lando penalty was just after the mirror fell, Verstappen slowed down that is why the gap did go down from 1.8-.7 to 1.0. Max saw that asked gp and nando was penalized.
Norris did not slow down at a double yellow, hence the normal penalty is 10 seconds and drive through, as per the rule book! Rules are rules, you can’t have the cake and eat it! It was a big mistake from Norris end off!
Max kept the gap where he was comfortable. When Lando got close keeping it flat out under double yellow, Max just out the gap right back to 2 seconds to avoid the undercut. I do agree with the Lando penalty but the circumstances that allowed for it to happen was a full blown FIA mess, just pull out a vsc or safety car to neutralize the race and pick up the wing mirror, not only did it get Norris a penality, it gave both Lewis and Carlos a puncture and instead just picking up a large wing mirror, they had to sweep it off because Valteri ran into when being blue flagged, pussy footing from the FIA when maintaining a safe racing environment but trigger happy with penalties
[but the circumstances that allowed for it to happen was a full blown FIA mess] Uh no, that's not factual. Lando not slowing down happened the first time he passed the mirror, check the footage and the timings. It's true the broadcast gave the impression it happened later because of Max's radio shown some laps later, but radio messages are always shown with delays. When Lando refused to lift he did not know they were going to screw up yet. They could still have called the VSC on time.
Double waved yellow on the straight...Lando made a mistake simple. And penalties are hard for double waved yellow. I see nothing wrong with that....just his own stupid fault. (Mazepin had the same penalty in 2021) Max also told the press he lost all respect for George after the race during the press conference when asked about yesterday and the penalty he got.
I respect Peter’s old school mentality regarding the penalty. Personally, I liked it because it did feel like Karma. But, if I was trying to be just and be consistent with current penalty standards, it should have been no penalty for Max and 5-10s penalty for Lando. But then, inconsistency is the only consistency we have from the stewards.
Ignoring yellow flags is a serious safety breach, so I'm glad it was penalized seriously. People have died for those rules to be created, they should be taken seriously. The rules could probably use a little bit of leniency, but I wouldnt go lighter than a drivethrough. More than the penalty itself, it hurt Norris that he had to serve it after a safety car. And Lando had already gotten away with safety breaches in Austin.
In this case there is actually a set penalty for ignoring double yellow. So for once the stewards did it right ( regardless of it feeling harsh , but feelings should never be a part in rulings )
Without going into the penalties being justified or not, the penalty for Max and for Lando are two completely different things. Max got a penalty to correct the situation of impeding a driver that could just have slowed down a bit, it is a corrective measure. Lando got a penalty for ignoring a potential safety issue, there might have been people on the track for all he knew. That penalty is a punishment for behavior, it is INCOMPARABLE.
A complete shambles by the FIA, all weekend IMO. What is actually going on with them?! We were robbed of a great second half of the race and it all stemmed from their hesitation over the discarded mirror from Albon's car. Max was outstanding, yet again.

Funny how George got crushed in T1, as everyone does when head to head with Max. Maybe George should try pitching for a pitlane start penalty next time around?
If they would quit trying to hit Max with the rulebook we could have consistency back. Actually I feel the stewards handled the race itself quite right. When the mirror came off they should have brought out the safety car immediately with a route through the pits. Don't know if the mirror is the only piece of debris.

Either insane or British. You fail to understand that F1 is a dangerous sport. People die. We now have safety measures that prevent a lot of deaths. Norris disregards the safety rules. Not lifting under double yellow has been a ten second stop and go for far longer than Verstappen and Norris have been on the grid.

100 % agree with you Peter! In a just world, responsibility should have gone to the FIA for complete incompetence of handling the mirror safety issue. Their ridiculous delay caused major risk for a number of cars that resulted in dangerous tire punctures and then they hypocritically punish Lando for not letting up. I feel they should realize that they are equally complicit and in fact caused more major contraventions to the safety of all the drivers much more than anything Lando did by not letting up. He failed to spot both the light and the double waved flags which meant he had to lift off, and the penalty for not lifting off is a stop and go penalty. An unfortunate mistake, but a mistake nonetheless and so he had to face the penalty for it.
It was so clear as day that Max had to report it and it took the stewards HOW MANY laps to finally make a decision?
@@wreagfe that's the worst thing. Stewards should see this themselves, and don't have to rely on snitches .
@GTE_Channel Lol snitches? Do you know how many times Lando has tried to squeeze penalties out of the stewards for Max on the radio this year? Practically every race. He literally said after the race "I would have reported it too if I was Max." Max lifted for the double yellows and lost 6 tenths to Norris because he didn't lift. Of course he's going to call that out. All drivers would.

Raceboy Russell is crazy 😂
One positive of the race is that the gravel traps certainly did their jobs. Prevented drivers from taking advantage of track limits as well as made for good self policing wheel to wheel racing.

He said he’s an “old fogie”. Not really. Peter has experience and wisdom. That’s precious these days. Peter’s analysis is almost always spot on. Unfortunately, the stewards, despite their F1 experience, lack Peter’s common sense.

Just a note on the restart.... Max was confused as the safety car lights weren't working. He couldn't get a clear answer so wasn't sure if to go or not hence Lando getting close to him.

What I like most about Max is that he's driving like he didn't just win his 4th title. If you didn't know any better you would think he was still fighting for the championship with the way he took the penalty personal and how he was defending. A lot of other drivers would've just let it go and relax knowing they already won the championship.

Quite an eventful race. Max is quite consistently getting it all out of that car. The team must have done well with the setup too.
One of the rare cases when I disagree with you Peter, Lando absolutely deserved to be penalized, Max lifted, everyone else on track lifted, only Lando flatfooted it through that safety zone and past a solid yellow light and two yellow flags that were hanging out into the track.
Also, you failed to mention that Charles is now within 8 points of surpassing Lando for P2 in the championship, which is more likely to happen than Ferrari surpassing McLaren for the Constructors.
Um. We don't know "everyone else lifted" because the FIA only looked at Lando after Max/Red Bull brought it to the race directors attention. Otherwise, I agree with you.

Peter thinks because it was a messy race for FIA, Norris should again be forgiven for a safety violation?
Why should Lando have been excused for not slowing under yellow? It's a clear cut rule, and Lando failed to abide by it. If you go too fast in the pit lane, you get penalized - it's the exact same thing. Stop looking for "mitigating circumstances" for Norris. Lando screwed up, simple as that.

Everybody but Lando showed down. Why can’t Lando handle a yellow?
Although the penalty was too harsh, Lando did destroy Max's well managed undercut window of almost 2 seconds, gaining some 0.6 seconds by not lifting when Max did lift at the double yellow.
Of course Max was surpirsed and reported it. Lando suddenly was close to a DRS distance.
Fernando was saying their software was thinking he was still behind the safety car and he wasn't getting full energy deployment on the restart.
When was that, was it the 2nd SC, when the SC lights defaulted. Just asking.
In most other motorsport it would have been a disqualificationhow was this too harsh
He not awarnes yellow flag
It's always been a stop go penalty. People these days are too jaded by 5 and 10 second time penalties being the norm. Back in the day drive through and stop go penalties used to be the standard, and they work far better as a deterrent.
@ agree.
Its true
Max kept the gap where he was comfortable. When Lando got close keeping it flat out under double yellow, Max just out the gap right back to 2 seconds to avoid the undercut. The Max stretched it even more before pittinng. Max yet again shoving the FIA bigotry right down their throats. All while schooling George!
And no mentioning of that, it show how much extra overhead Max seems to have….. interesting for 2025
I never miss your videos awesome awesome contribution Peter as always. Respectfully I wouldn’t say George was disparaging the Pirelli Hard tyre itself but the choice to go to the hard tyre
Max got a 3 place gridpenalty for ignoring double yellows (I believe in Mexico some year ago, not sure) and lost pole position so why should Lando not get a penalty for ignoring yellow flags? He has to pay attention, Max saw him coming very close all of a sudden so he knew Lando didn’t lift

[but the circumstances that allowed for it to happen was a full blown FIA mess]
Uh no, that's not factual.
(Mazepin had the same penalty in 2021)
Max also told the press he lost all respect for George after the race during the press conference when asked about yesterday and the penalty he got.
Land-o , the english version of Jezus Christus,
I respect Peter’s old school mentality regarding the penalty.
It's not unjustified just becourse lando is english , is it ? 😅😅😅 clowns .
In this case there is actually a set penalty for ignoring double yellow. So for once the stewards did it right ( regardless of it feeling harsh , but feelings should never be a part in rulings )
Rules for others, not for Lando. He's gotten away with a lot this season.
Charles also did a great job with beautiful driving and keeping Oscar at an even closer 1.1 -1.2 seconds for about 15 laps. Top stuff!
A complete shambles by the FIA, all weekend IMO. What is actually going on with them?!
We were robbed of a great second half of the race and it all stemmed from their hesitation over the discarded mirror from Albon's car.
