I follow Saguto for the full swing exclusively. I liked the tip here about keeping a slight cupping of the right wrist for chipping. It helps prevent that jerky right hand flip skull shot. I find that the ball runs out a bit but I'd rather that then off the back of the green.
Correct, more "lag" equals more compression. More compression equals more distance and release. Less lag equals more spin. If you'd like the ball to run out less then just use a little more loft with a different club or hit a shot with a slower but longer swing to take the momentum off the ball. -Derek

Sure. In this I was using only a 54 degree wedge. I also carry a 58 degree which would be useful for a shot like over that bunker as shown or for a higher "flop." 54 degree I like to use primarily because I can manipulate the loft with it and control the flight pretty well with something that doesn't let the ball ride up the face as much (hence forth why I don't use a 60 degree wedge). Hope that helps. -Derek
So for chipping on slopes like that, I just try to match my shoulders level with the slope and then take the same swing. I wish I could've demonstrated that but down in the South it's all flat lies lol. Downslopes you could just assess your distance to the hole and if there's anything in the way, and just angle your shoulders downward to match the slope and swing. Upslope is the same concept but just vice versa with the shoulder angle. Hope that helps.
@@dereknahrwold9302 watching some of the videos on your channel, they don’t appear to have a ton of SnT (Saguto) influence. Has your full swing changed since those videos?
Huge fan of the toe down chipping. It really does take bad strikes out of the equation. The only real decision is whether if one is more comfortable changing swing length or club loft, by going to a PW, 9, or 8 ect. for the distance, and conditions.
Yes! Toe-down is a pro setup "cheat code" for difficult chip shot conditions such as deep/thick grass, thin lies, pine straw, etc., and it can also be deployed well for normal lies as Derek demonstrates. Thanks! Tom

I have messed around before with using a hybrid off of weird lies, whether tight lies or up against rough on the fringe. I don't see it being an issue, but for me realizing that using less heel on the wedge and being able to manipulate how the ball reacted off the clubface depending on what part of the clubface I use has made a difference in my game. Hope that helps. -Derek
For me, as I mentioned earlier the feeling of a short backswing and longer follow through (if done correctly) will open a door for you on spinning it differently. It's a work in progress for me still but one thing I know is a given from it is solid contact. Depends on how much weight you keep on your lead side for this type of pitch shot but from 75 and in you can hit a reliable shot by that feel alone, and from inside and less than 50 yards the result you can get from this technique is a few bounces and then stops up nice. Hope that helps. -Derek

I went to the ramge, tried your advice, and hit some really good shots, but the majority were really high or duck hooks... Any suggestions? At the end I couldn't stop hooking it and got really frustrating. I was once a 5 handicap and quit for many years, now I'm trying to get back into it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really like the simplicity of your tips/swing to not over complicate things. TIA
There are just too many potential variables and unknowns for me to make an accurate diagnosis regarding those hooks without actually seeing your swing, Jay. For example, if your path was previously too steep and you were making compensations to prevent the ball from slicing off the planet - perhaps a very strong grip or setting up with a closed face - then those compensations could certainly result in a hook if you have successfully corrected your path. Other things to consider are your ball position is too far forward, your hands are too far back, your weight is not forward enough at impact, more..... Ultimately, the answer lies in ball flight laws. Clubface angle relative to target line at impact is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. From there you can then do some reverse engineering to identify and neutralize the cause of a sideways shot. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address the various causes of hooks, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom Saguto, PGA

If that is what you're struggling with, I would recommend keeping the hands soft but feeling a turn in either your shoulders or chest. At least that's how I would attempt to fix loose wrists if they're breaking. I would also look at how much they break on the backswing because if they're breaking/hinging too soon, then they will return to the ball breaking/hinging too soon. If that's the case then bring the club back with a stable feeling through your arms and hands. Still keep the soft feeling but you're not necessarily breaking your wrists early, just maintaining the angle. Hope that helps. -Derek
Thanks - I appreciate your observation. Derek is an aspiring professional player and has put a lot of time into honing his short game as he should. I, on the other hand, am an extremely busy PGA instructor focusing my teachings primarily on the full swing to provide maximum game-changing benefits to a gargantuan audience, and as such for now I simply do not have the luxury of time to work on the other aspects of _my_ game. For now....😎 TS
So risky to say just use the arms and hands and downplaying the importance of the Body, which is the pivot point that generates energy and control to the arms for finesse shots. When you do not rotate the body, which moves the butt up and inside and moving the low point forward, will cause bottoming out early and thus fatting the shots.
I think I disagree with you about opening the face. The ball will (I think) travel in the direction of the club path. It will not travel in the direction the face is pointed. Feel free to challenge me on this.
Tom I went back to look at the video again. Check Derek’s face at 34:27 when he opens the face. It points way to the right but his path will be to the target.
Research has proven that clubface angle relative to target line is the _primary_ influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. And as you will recall from the video, Derek opened the face first, _then_ lined up the leading edge to his target, and _then_ took his grip. Thanks, Tom Saguto, PGA
There’s more than one way to skin a cat but this was all good information. I wouldn’t ever put the ball back in my stance tho. Only in play when absolutely necessary. Otherwise ya’ll be doing it every time and moving it so far back it looks dumb
There are about as many individual nuances and personal preferences involved when it comes to chipping as there are golfers in the world, Rodney. 😎 We see it all the time on Tour as no two techniques appear to be the same. We need to figure out what works best and most reliably for us, and what Derek is demonstrating here is a way that he eliminated variables from his stroke to crisp up contact and deliver consistency. Tom
@ fair enough, I’m just speaking from experience. I put the ball back in my stance on every ship for years and my bunker play suffered as a result and in the end it became a bit of a crutch more than anything. Learning how to use the bounce of my wedges the way it was intended opened the door to a whole bunch of different types of shots. But like I said initially this was a great and helpful video.
Check out Dan Grieve golf.. 'No such thing as a bad lie' He talks alot about understanding bounce which these guys don't even mention. It's a big part of whether you chip and pitch well or not.
@ianpowell6985 I have dropped 11 strokes a round from Dan Greives style. Been winning a good amount of club skins game. And Tom's method as far as leaning on lead foot, I'm hot right now. ⛳️ 🏌️♀️ ⛳️ 🏌️♀️
He's thinjing about using his soft hands and then your talking about your shoulders. Now you have people thinking about two different things. That's what messes people up.
His soft hands and the shoulder-driven action do not conflict at all. The soft hands simply enable the wrists and club to respond to the big muscles controlling the motion as they should. Respectfully, in actuality what "messes people up" are erroneous and/or misguided interpretations such as that which you attempted to convey. Thanks for visiting and best of luck to you. Tom Saguto, PGA
You don't have to digest it all at once, Russ! Folks are always clamoring for short game instruction, so here's a whole bunch of it in one fell swoop featuring an aspiring professional player who has really mastered this aspect of the game. TS

-Derek
If you need another Derek to come on the show and demonstrate some horrible putting, just give me a call Tom!
😆😆😆
The difference I also see between the two of you is Derek has less hip and leg movement than you Tom.
For now....😎

So risky to say just use the arms and hands and downplaying the importance of the Body, which is the pivot point that generates energy and control to the arms for finesse shots. When you do not rotate the body, which moves the butt up and inside and moving the low point forward, will cause bottoming out early and thus fatting the shots.
It's a "feel" thing. Derek keeps his hands soft and thereby allows them to simply respond to the shoulder-driven motion.
Learn to accelerate through the ball is the biggest key to chipping.
Learn to hit through the ball and not at it.
Yes. The urge to hit at the ball when chipping - just like in the full swing - is a recipe for disaster!

Thanks,

👍✅😜✅👍
Glad you enjoyed it!!
...now come try that in British bare, boggy and generally foul lies!😂
If you choke up a little bit, it'll help chunky shots with the soggy grass. Learned this recently!
I would love to
I figure probably a lot more toe down shots around there to avoid digging and less loft with club choice.
Nothing special about British lies bud
Check out Dan Grieve golf.. 'No such thing as a bad lie' He talks alot about understanding bounce which these guys don't even mention. It's a big part of whether you chip and pitch well or not.
@ianpowell6985 I have dropped 11 strokes a round from Dan Greives style.
Been winning a good amount of club skins game. And Tom's method as far as leaning on lead foot, I'm hot right now. ⛳️ 🏌️♀️ ⛳️ 🏌️♀️
Move the body, not the arm.

Good info Tom but too long. Be well-Russ
Watch in instalments!

You don't have to digest it all at once, Russ! Folks are always clamoring for short game instruction, so here's a whole bunch of it in one fell swoop featuring an aspiring professional player who has really mastered this aspect of the game.

This has to be a troll lmao.
I have no idea what you are referring to as this is my golf instruction business, Tim, but thanks for visiting.

Get out of his way tom, unwatchable
Great video. Wondering what degree loft your wedges were? And do you use the same loft for all your pitch/chip shots?
