Of course this isn't dolby surround but at least a proper stereo as you can put the speakers on the left and right corners of the tv and have a great gap between the two channels. So before you spend money on a soundbar + satellites + subwoofer + iphone to even control the setup, maybe just get some dedicated speakers and an decent entry level "HiFi class" amplifier.
People aren't buying sound bars for the best sound quality available, it's for the ease of use and the overall clean setup they offer. It's like comparing a gaming laptop to a gaming desktop, there is always pros and cons.
a good used older amp and a couple of good used bookshelf speakers will sound 10x better than these things do and for about the same price. ive always had good sound for cheap prices and dont need to worry about my family and pets treating the house like were rioting/peaceful protesting.
@C K I agree with what you are saying but $350 is well above the point at which there is good value. If you just want better sound that the crappy TV speakers then any cheaper soundbar unit $200 or below will do fine. 'Premium' soundbars simply don't have a reason to justify their existence. Even if you got one as part of a multichannel setup either you are serious enough to need a proper bookshelf style center channel, or the center can still be a cheaper unit as the main Left/Right channels + sub are doing a significant % of the sound, so a cheaper center doesn't matter, the user will never notice the difference.

I'm not an audiophile but the way Dan presents the information, I have a better apprectiation of what audiophiles listen for. Also I learned stuff which is always good. I would like to watch Dan reviewing a range of mid-price headphones.
We love the Dan content. My Bose Solo bar from about 2013 is still going strong. It has lots of bass but doesn't muddy the mids nearly as much as the Sonos Ray does. Also all the app stuff and making you have an account is incredibly dumb
This review or first look pretty much sums up my experience with sonos, especially with the bass and the lack of adjustability. The speakers I have (Play:1 and Symfonisk) dont't have any IO, so WIFI is the only Option. But they frequently stop working completely if you don't update the app and the speaker firmware - even if you just want to play music from your NAS. Which actually is a bit of a a security risk, since it only works with SMB1, which has been deprecated for more than 10 years. Also I now have to use two different apps and for some reason one of the speakers bricked and I can not connect it to my network anymore, or I can connect it to the network, but the app always fails to connect to it. Their support also couldn't help me at all. I am done with them.
I got the Sonos Arc connected to my TV via eARC, I got the app, pushed all the updates, did the Trueplay calibration and I was in love with the sound from the very first second. It has been flawless ever since. It's basically the Apple of sound product, you can't do shit but for regular use cases it just works as easily as humanly possible
Soo…this is disingenuous at best lazy at worst. The the play:1 has ethernet. The play:1 and all Symfonisk speakers are S2 compatible so you don’t have to use both apps. If a firmware update bricks a speaker I’ve never heard a story where Sonos didn’t replace it after a support call. But you have to contact them so they know something went wrong
Ey I like this guy as a presenter and he knows what he's talking about in terms of audio enough to tell you what frequencies are recessed without looking at a response graph. Very nice pickup LMG.
Make sure to do the Trueplay tuning. My Sonos One sounded like absolute garbage until I did Trueplay, even though I used only the one speaker and I had just pulled it straight out of the box.
This is a new level of in-depth, yet short-ish review. I absolutely love it and it makes me super excited about lab content, expecting that to match or exceed what we just saw. Also, Dan just hit that sweet spot of high competence high sarcasm! Feels LTT, great video! Side note: This does not mix well with SC content. I thought SC explicitly makes "unboxing, not review". Is there a lab channel coming for this kind of in depth high technical content? I suspect it could become overwhelming for many consumer-background watchers. Very happy and excited for what you are doing rn thanks guys!
What a coincidence, one of my friends on Discord just got a Sonos sound bar. That said, I might have to upgrade the sound bar in the Media Room of my house soon. Not just because of how old it is, but it also lacks Dolby Atmos support.
the video was miss leading, optical doesn't support atmos nor does youtube, so idk what he was thinking. If you want atmos go for the ARC over the beam (gen2), since the arc uses sealed speakers and the beam uses passive radiator speakers. you'll get more crisp sound from the arc whereas the beam you'll get more unnecessary bass. I myself use beam gen1 for my 5.1 setup since i'm not interested in atmos and dislike how long the arc is under my tiny 27" monitor
small Note: Dolby atmos outside of cinemas and very dedicated home-cinemas is basically just an EQ with reverb and so on - just like the atmos on smartphones. It's not a reinvention of sound from every playback device as it oftes is talked about. While it can make music or movies sound a bit better on lower end hardware, you would be better off with some decent hifi bookshelf speakers and a small amplifier that are way less limited in terms of speaker size and thus in their frequency response (not having these heavy dips/ peaks) and in their clarity because they are not being pushed to their limits. @Avenue is also completly right about optical not even being capable of transmitting the dolby atmos standart - at best only up to 5.1 standart surround sound - again the atmos here is only the new mixing of a otherwise normal stereo or potentially 5.1 surround sound
It 'exists' but it's not the same as an actual Dolby Atmos setup. It is 100% not worth hunting down a soundbar that has Atmos support for just that reason
@@puffnpluky76 indeed in a true dolby atmos theatre there is a total of 64 speakers the best we can achieve at home is 7.1.2 to reproduce/mimic that sound
Regarding the whole calibration using the app thing, you can calibrate the sound to frequency response of the mic on a dozen different iPhone handsets but you can't for the thousands of different Android handsets
Please, we need more Dan and more audio equipment reviews - I’d love it if LMG started reviewing Audio Interfaces and professional studio monitors (Genelecs, Adam, Yamaha, Focal, Presonus, Tannoy speakers etc.)!
Damn, it's almost like Sonos forgot to put the "beats by Dre" logo on that thing. Listening to this on my jbl flip 5 legitimately made me think it broke during crab rave. That was unacceptably noticeable. Side bar: the hertz test that happened was hilarious on said flip 5. My entire table was shaking and it took it like a champ 😂💪
gotta buy a AV receiver also which will run you up to 1k-2k and the wires you'll get tired of that look and going to spend money to hide that as well so I wouldn't go for a budget setup in any case scenario.
This was a fantastic video. The most informative and useful sound bar review I've ever watched. I hope you make more of these to help me pick a sound bar!
Around 2:03, from the way he reads it it sounds like "class-D amp" is something nonsensical that Sonos marketing made up. That's not the case. It is the code letter for a particular type of amplification circuit.
People stopped hearing it about 15K - 16K Hz because the compressed audio format that most streaming audio and video providers use, drops audio frequencies higher than 16KHz. You can see this visually if you download the file and use the Spectrum Analyzer of most audio-editing apps. The default stereo encoding is also Joint-Stereo which reduces stereo separation. The default for most MP3 encoders has been 128 Kbps Joint-Stereo with 16KHz frequency cut-off. This has carried over as default to AAC encoders too. For true sine-wave audible signal generator, you should either use an 1) Dedicated signal generator with analog amplifier or 2) Audio Editing App like Audacity + High-quality DAC. The range and bias of the signal generator curve is affected by the amplifier circuit too, hence high-quality DAC and amplifiers are required. Kudos on being able to capture the audio from 30Hz though, not many mic setups are capable of doing it well. Individual Mics also have their own bias when capturing audio. Were you using Mics that are typically used for home-theatre calibration? Most of these have a near flat frequency response.
Dan referring to specific frecuencies instead of just “lows and highs” is so awesome. Please don’t let anybody else do speaker reviews:)
Yea, like I know general public don't know what 200-300hz is. But I do. And guess what, because I work with audio all the time, I'm the guy people ask for speaker and headphone recommendations. So it helps me help those people.

I am done with them.
i had this problem also, it had nothing to do with sonos but my ISP pushing a firmware update on the modem
SMB1 requirement is a massive fail by Sonos
Ey I like this guy as a presenter and he knows what he's talking about in terms of audio enough to tell you what frequencies are recessed without looking at a response graph. Very nice pickup LMG.
Make sure to do the Trueplay tuning. My Sonos One sounded like absolute garbage until I did Trueplay, even though I used only the one speaker and I had just pulled it straight out of the box.
Dan's voice is so calming. Like hearing a gentle intro into a relaxation track. Or the 2am smooth jazz DJ
I wanna see Riley and Dan review something together… I feel like their humor would be great together 😹
This is QVC for our generation.
This is why I love Dan. He goes through existential crises while still maintaining a monotone voice.
I've loved my JBL Deep Bass 2.1. Brand new for $300. Has ARC and a sub. Wide sound stage. No app. No account.
i love the way this dude just throws mad shade at every product. no shilling.
Dolby Atmos in a soundbar doesn't exist. It's not much more than a sales gimmick, just like Beats Audio was back in the day.
It 'exists' but it's not the same as an actual Dolby Atmos setup. It is 100% not worth hunting down a soundbar that has Atmos support for just that reason
@@puffnpluky76 indeed in a true dolby atmos theatre there is a total of 64 speakers
the best we can achieve at home is 7.1.2 to reproduce/mimic that sound
Dan is easily one of my favorite presenters. Great job hiring this charming guy!
Regarding the whole calibration using the app thing, you can calibrate the sound to frequency response of the mic on a dozen different iPhone handsets but you can't for the thousands of different Android handsets
But there's plenty of Android phones that CAN do that, it's unreasonable to nerf their experience because other people have budget phones.
I also have a Flip 5. Will watch this vid again using that speaker lol.😄
@@jerrycaidic08 flip 5 gang
Whoever did the sound for this video well done!
Original title was "why ecosystems are bad!"
I don't know what it is about Dan, but he's great. He's so sarcastic without trying I can't tell if he's actually sarcastic, and I love it.
I cannot stress this enough, do not get into the habit of looking directly at the end of fiber connectors. Strong ones will burn holes into your eyes!
Like all warnings, don't look into the laser with your other eye.
Dan is superb to watch and is full of great ideas.......................need more of Dan on the channel
A budget 5.1 home cinema system beats ANY soundbar on the market. Even the high end soundbars.
But a lot of people do not want speakers all over their living room which is why soundbars are so popular
gotta buy a AV receiver also which will run you up to 1k-2k and the wires you'll get tired of that look and going to spend money to hide that as well
so I wouldn't go for a budget setup in any case scenario.
I like Dan. He is a nice addition to the team.
The opening line is a beautiful piece of sarcasm that sums it all up!
I will never watch another LTT audio related video without Dan
This was a fantastic video. The most informative and useful sound bar review I've ever watched. I hope you make more of these to help me pick a sound bar!
This my preferred energy calm soft and just enthusiastic enough to seem friendly but just enough to know his also dead inside i love him
I love all the different POV on this channel. Damn is Dan good at this love to see him grow as he continues to do stuff.
Dan. Another god amongst the LTT crew. Great casting!
I love how Dan's energy just always feels like "I don't know how I got here or who any of you are but fuck it lets do this"
Keep. This. Guy. An actual audio review on LTT is really nice.
Dan's commentary is 10 out of 10. Keep having Dan do more unboxing.
24 seconds in and I already want Dan to do more of these.
I will never have the money for the things Dan reviews but I love his humor so much I can't help but watch
YOU NEED TO DO ALL THE REVIEWS THIS IS ACTUAL CRITICISIM 10/10
Been loving Dan's videos. Kind of like Anthony, I would listen to him talk about anything.
This man is a legend. Thoroughly enjoying everything he's in :D
6:26 YOO! SOHN is so good!! One of my favorite artists for sure. The live album with Metropole Orkest is just awesome.
I love how immediately likeable Dan is. Had me wanting to watch within the first few seconds. Took me at least a year for Alex to stop annoying me 😂
I like this guy, no nonsense attitude and very informative. Upvoted
Get Dan to do more reviews like this, straight forward and informative, Sounds very knowledgeable
