    Hello, it is quite possible to operate several loudspeakers in one room. The rooms simply have to be named differently and then defined as a group. The system can operate up to 32 loudspeakers in one room - if you want it that way. With 2 Era 300 as rear speakers, an ARC Soundbar and 2 Sonos Sub Gen3 you get also a full 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos home cinema setup. I love the new ERA 300 (got 4 of them and 2 Era 100 as well). All of them sound much better than my Sonos Ones, I used to have before.

    • @JonathanSundy
      @JonathanSundy ปีที่แล้ว +8

      But there's a difference between the speakers opperating as channels and the speakers producing room filling effects. If you add, say 4 speakers to a room, they're all going to play the exact same thing so you do not lack gaps in your sound stage, but they won't operate as positional speakers for audio content purposes.

    I was at a listening event from Sonos when they first presented these to the press. They showed us the Dolby Atmos setup with an Arc, two Era 300 surround speakers and two Subs. It was the closest thing I ever experienced to IMAX sound in a living room. You should definitely make a Video about that.

      @VanDammage87 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Have you not heard an actual Dolby Atmos home theatre system with an AVR and traditional speaker setup with actual height speakers? While Sonos does a decent job with a soundbar setup the difference is still Night and Day compared to an actual home theatre system.

      @@VanDammage87 also considering that atmos support up to 128 channel and in a proper cinema (I've tried the Melzo Meyer Sound Atmos with nearly 60 channels), i highly doubt this can sound even near a proper Atmos calibrated system (you can also build a Genelec system if I'm correct that will sound way better and linear). Also he talks about IMAX that is only 5.1... (I've tried the Orio System that is an IMAX SR but it also shows his limits while having big proper IMAX speakers)... So yeah... I think he never tried a proper or decent Atmos system...

    • @aj0413_
      @aj0413_ ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@VanDammage87 I think the key here is "living room" since most people have dedicated rooms for their home theatre, assuming they even have one. I'd have to agree that Sonos is probably one of the best living room solutions a normal person can get. I have one sub + one sls + arc and have to say I don't feel like I'm missing much. Recently helped my dad install 10k+ worth of speakers in his massive living room (4-6 down firing in-ceiling for atmos, alone), but you'd have to really be selective on the media to make the difference ""night and day." Audio has massive diminishing returns and the audio mastering most have access to at home via streaming and so on isn't gonna take advantage of *real* atmos setups...not even getting into the issue of acoustics of a living room playing a large part in the experience too.

      How do they compare to something like the Beolabs, McIntosh XRs, etc.? To me it doesn't seem possible that the two could be comparable but I haven't looked at Sonos in years because they did not seem to be a serious brand (at least, back then).

      @@TrioLOLGamers I'm using a Samsung HW-Q990B. Bought it for less than €900 and you can get it even cheaper these days here in Europe. It does provide a pretty nice Atmos experience and the sound quality is also great. While the Atmos ceiling effects definitely are much better on a proper setup and other kinds of sounds are also a bit better... it's hard to do better than this without having to attach speakers to the ceiling and for as low cost. That being said, other soundbars that offer similar quality seem to cost 2 to 3 times as much.
      That being said, soundbars have actually made A LOT of progress in recent years. So while a dedicated non-soundbar surround setup does still sound better, the good modern soundbars are capable of damn great sound. It's ideal for someone like me who doesn't want to attach speakers to every corner. Sure, it can be done for cheap but it'll also look horrible so I'd need to spend extra money and a lot of extra effort into actually making it look decent. And I'm no good with tools to actually do that.

    That's the thing, I have a Sonos Soundbar + Speakers in the back. I have the ability to add subs which is great. But what about to speakers in the front to further advance the experience, as you said I feel like Sonos does not want my money. In the forums, this is a hot topic and I cant figure out why they haven't added it in all these years... maybe it is not possible hardware/software-wise?

    • @patrickjohnson3143
      @patrickjohnson3143 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's definitely possible. But it's a lower priority because so few customers would buy the products for that reason. We want it bad, but 98% of customers don't have in-ceiling speakers, or space behind their couch to get to 7.2.X.
      Hardware wise, it exists - you could add a One or Era 100/300 to the front or rear to add channels. Ceiling speakers + the amp to get overhead speakers. But only a very vocal minority would buy more products to do it. And it's likely more software dev time than the Era lineup completely.
      Think about the people who would buy it, it's a slither of the market. Higher and they're rolling their own home-hifi with much higher-end speakers. Slightly lower and you're happy with the products you already have.

    Atmos for music at the moment is 5.1.4 and for consumer available video in TrueHD format 7.1.4, DD+ format 5.1.4 once exported form the Dolby encoder.
    Yes you can add more speakers in and define the position of them but the decoder in your AVR / soundbar etc does all the heavy lifting.
    Each sonos surround set is its own independent 5ghz network with all surround speakers / sub connecting back to the main soundbar regardless of how it’s connected to your home. I can imagine trying to keep track of all that positional calculation across an expanding group of speakers would be a lot of computation and also a lot of traffic from the host device which is always the soundbar hence the limit.
    Given that there is only ever 7.1.4 channels of audio maximum in the consumer atmos track, you don’t actually gain anything extra going beyond that with speakers, just “calculated” panning from your decoding device.
    Another example for Apple Music, the decode happens in the AirPods turning that 5.1.4 mix as binaural stereo which enables the head tracking etc to be low latency.
    This is why atmos in (very large) cinemas is much more positional, the audio track is delivered on an SSD and is synced to the digital video timecode. A full atmos track of 24 channels is around 150Mbps bandwidth.

      Nice info

    • @dniel97
      @dniel97 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are many wrong information you got there....
      1. DD+ Atmos uses 15 dynamic objects on streaming services which uses 768 kbit/s and is not tied to 5.1.4 at all, in fact the standard says the reference layout should be 7.1.4 for music
      2. TrueHD Atmos support also 15 dynamic objects and not 7.1.4, sure the reference layout can be 7.1.4 and there are some blu rays which only uses 7.1.4 but that is not the norm.
      3. Because Atmos uses dynamic objects the current maximum limit is 32 speakers in the consumer environment, so a 24.x.10 setup is possible with DD+ and TrueHD (Trinnov Altitude 32).
      4. Never heard of a DCP IAB MXF to be delivered on a SSD, that would be way to expensive and overkill. Dolby Atmos for Cinemas uses a 7.1.2 bed and max 118 dynamic audio objects, no idea where you get the 24 channels from, because Cinema supports up to 64 individual speakers.

    • @markep5457
      @markep5457 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dniel97 1 + 2. Regardless of your dynamic objects in metadata and how they are clustered this is still delivered over channels in the export for consumer media and is actively downmixed depending on your target so 7.1 channels for TrueHD and 5.1 for EAC3 as per the Dolby encoder spec.
      3. Whilst this is accurate in terms of total possibility it is still dependant on the receiver decoding and panning objects based on the position and timestamp in the metadata. The "phsyical" audio data in terms of waveform is still in an encoded channel in the downmix.
      4. It has been a while since I was in a projection booth so this may have changed however the early atmos content was delivered in this way, like how the early DTS tracks were delivered on a separate disk that was timecoded to the film reel. As for the channel count yeah I was wrong there, IAB can support up to 128 channels but tends to be mastered to 26 (not 24) following the interoperability guidelines

    • @dniel97

      @@markep5457
      1. + 2. Not quite, yes the objects are encoded in the backwards compatible 5.1 or 7.1 bed for EAC-3 JOC. But the decoder will extract the audio objects from the bed channels when it supports Dolby Atmos and can render it to a 9.1.6 setup for example just fine. TrueHD Atmos (or MLP 16ch presentation) on the hand can actually use 16 channels (not 7.1) with encoded object data, so you get a much better separation.

    It's not an optimal solution, but a workaround to have 4 speakers in one room playing in sync, is to set up two separate stereo pairs in one room and invert the ones behind you. So the 'right' in the second pair is positioned rear left, and the 'left' is rear right. Then if you play something to both pairs within the room, it gives you two distinct channels synced up either side of where you are sat. I use this for the 4 speakers I have in my bedroom set-up around the bed.

    Love you Dan
    I have been running the original sound bar with the surrounds and a subwoofer. Bought them all at the same time. 700 for sub and sound bar, and then 300 for the surrounds.
    I was debating between these and Bose at the time. Sonos was slightly cheaper. The theater immersion I get when using the system is awesome. It can shake the whole room. Love the option for night mode and voice clarity when watching something where I want to hear the actors easily and not have the volume change. Best investment I ever made.
    Still sound just as good as when I bought them over ten years ago.

    We have those at work in the office. They are great - integration with Spotify, they connect to the wifi, so you can pick it up, plug into any socket, and it will work. Super easy to sync them so that the whole office plays the same song - great!
    But we had an open house for clients, and we wanted to have a TV play a video, and we wanted a single speaker for that. It works right away, but THE DELAY. It's like 2s. I get why, all the speakers communicate with each other to sync, encoding, wifi etc - get it. So we plugged it in via jack. And? Well, it's super easy to make the whole office play sound from that input - great. But use this a speaker for a video? Forget it. No matter if it was isolated, paired, wifi or jack, 2s delay. So we enabled subtitiles and muted the sound....

    You can actually have multiple stereo paired speakers in a single room. Totally agree it’s dumb the way Sonos makes everything a room in setup for each speaker. I have an Era 300, stereo paired Era 100s, and a stereo pair of Sonos Moves. I named each room in the Sonos app with the speaker’s name, then I created a group of these speakers and named that group “Josh’s Bedroom.” Now when I ask the Sonos Assistant on a device in my bedroom to play something, it’ll default to playing it on the group. - Josh

    So wait, his big complaint at the end was that it doesn't do the main thing that Sonos has been able to do really well since the first set i bought nearly 20 years ago? And now with four play 5's, six 1's, a couple amps for the in ceiling speakers on the deck and the speakers behind the wall in the dining room, an arc, a roam and the other mobile speaker, I know that it does exactly what he says it doesn't. Perhaps get someone on your staff that actually looks at a product before he reviews it. Oh wait, there was one other big complaint. The power cable doesn't just fall out. When I put it in there, I don't want it falling out, ever.

  • @liquid79

    I have been a fan of what soundbars offered by way of space saving and having sound quality similar to traditional receiver-based systems. I started on the budget friendly side with Sony and transitioned last year to the Sonos Arc with the subwoofer. The Era 100’s went on sale after the Era 300 debuted and I pulled the trigger. I’m SO glad I did.
    I have been forever sold on the brand because the quality of sound is fantastic for my gaming and movie needs. Even in the future when I have a dedicated theater room, I will forego spending the $10k+ on theater audio for a Sonos solution.
    For anyone on the fence in investing the $2k on a full system, I HIGHLY recommend pulling the trigger. You won’t regret the decision.

    Try to create 2 stereo pairs of the ERA 100 and one of the ERA300 put them in living room 1 & living room 2, then connect the rooms in the app and listen to all 4 speakers you got there in that one room your in wright now. You get a good idea about what that would sound like with 4 ERA300’s
    Place the stereo pairs opposite of each other with their lefts and rights facing each other so the stereo image won”t get disturbed.
    Before doing this all, try the song “boom” by Tiesto in Dolby Atmos on one single ERA300. Halfway this short song the sound is swirling around your head. This from one single speaker is a mind gobbling experience.

    Sonos stability has been my main issue. Since you are relying on wifi (2.4ghz only) and now bluetooth, and then integration into your music app unless you are using the sonos s2 app isn't stable. Can lock up my airplay requiring restarts. When they work and you want to play music in every room for the rare gimmicy experience, then yeah Sonos.
    But how much money does Dan have? How are you saying to get two bookshelf speakers for $900 before taxes? Please don't listen to Dan.

      Except they are objectively worse in terms of cost/performance. The front drivers are disabled for atmos so your "rear surround" 300s don't even fire at the listeners.
      Your front stage is crammed into a fixed width sound bar and you have no additional expansion for height channels.
      An AVR, some mid grade passives and a sub will be objectively better.
      HOWEVER, the pros of the Sonos is that they are the iOS of home audio. Sleek, user friendly and just enough control to leave users fulfilled. Also no speaker wire goes a long way in approachability.
      But still not better than a standalone 7.1.2 or 7.2.4 or even a 5.1.2
