It was so much fun to see Ellie and Riley just being normal teenagers, and so sweet to see them kiss. I assume it was Ellie's first kiss, a d Bella did such a good job portraying that nervous "oh crap! What if she doesn't like me like that?" and then rhat giddy little smile when ahe found out Riley did. But holy crap! Imagine going from first kiss to fighting for your life to resigning yourself to desth within 5 minutes.
When Riley shows she's bitten, the sad guitar music plays...kills me every time. Also love the carousel scene. Ellie's in a new place, bright lights, and cool things to look at, and yet she just stares at Riley, cause that's where her heart is.
The moment where we cut back quickly to Joel just shivering (from an infection/blood loss/the cold) alone in the frigid basement broke my heart. So glad Ellie didn’t leave him. The way those two clasped hands together! 🥺
This is my favorite episode and, not coincidently, truest to the spirit of the game. It was the only episode I didn’t have to repeatedly tell myself to have an open mind on as a massive fan of the games. Bella captures Ellie’s essence so brilliantly, but gives her own twist to the character that’s really fun for a long time fan like me. Great reaction!
Ellie didn't need to go out to find Fireflies. They were supposed to pick up Riley next day to take her to Atlanta. She was guarding their stash in the mall.
Back in episode 1 a lot of that conversation Marlene had with Elie when she sat with her led me to assume that the Fireflies found her in the mall after this all happened. Elie was wearing the same clothes as in this episode and when she. called Fireflies terrorists Marlene said "...and terrorist? Was Reilly a terrorist?" So between that, and her mall story...with the pause about being alone in episode 2... I was bracing for everything to go bad from the minute they went in the mall.
Millennials approaching their 40s: 😐 He wasn't saying go North to get help, he was saying go North, let me die here and be safe with Tommy. They're already a weeks worth away from Jackson, he would never make it that long, let alone another week for them to come back. The rest of it is only implied, but Riley likely turned after a few hours and Ellie had to put her down. Marlene likely found her grieving next to her since they were supposed to move her to Atlanta the next day, finding Ellie bitten but still kicking. Remember Marlene said she was the one who told the others not to shoot her, and also asking whether Ellie thinks that Riley was a terrorist too in regards to her opinion on the Fireflies. This event basically tells you a lot about Ellie. Joel is now her family, she now know what it means what Riley told her. It also left her with tremendous survivors guilt, which just got further amplified by the events of their journey with losing Tess, Henry and Sam. All the loss and suffering she endured were a direct consequence of how the world is due to the infected, which she is a potential cure for, which sort of became her identity, which will be important for the rest of the story of the first & the entire story of the second game. I'm not going to spoil who they play, but the next episode will feature the original game actor for Joel, and the episode after the original game actor for Ellie. Just as a heads up.
In the game/DLC Riley is not stationed at the mall. Ellie and Riley had snuck out of Fedra school and gone to this mall multiple times in the past, so they felt safe there since they had never seen any Infected there before. But this was the first time they had been there when it had power - it was the music Riley played for her dance with Ellie that attracted the Infected.

Riley was going to be away next day, so Fireflies came to pick her up the next day, but she was dead and Ellie wasn't. That was when they've found her.
So when Ellie first described how she got infected to Tess in episode 2, Tess asked "you were all by yourself??" Or something to that extent. Ellie pauses to think and then tries to casually agree. But you can tell something is there. Then of course in episode 4 Joel talks to her about having to hurt someone and that someone her age shouldn't have to hurt or kill people. Ellie eventually confesses that it wasn't her first time hurting/killing someone... Joel asks what happened, Ellie didn't want to talk about it.. All those small conversations leads to this episode of course
Best guess is that Marlene (and/or other Fireflies) showed up in the morning since Riley was supposed to go to Atlanta the next day, either to pick her up or because she didn't show up.... and found that Ellie was bitten but hadn't turned for some reason.
Yaaas. New reaction time. Lets go! 🤙 This wasn't the most exciting bit of DLC to play back in the day, but it was essential and very emotional storytelling for the overall bigger picture. (and this episode took it next level)
As others have mentioned, this episode is from the DLC, meaning players would have finished the game/main story before seeing this. So it plays a bit different that way since the players already know how Joel being wounded was resolved, and what happened to Ellie. In the game (without giving anything away) it goes right from the end of the previous episode - Joel falling off the horse and Ellie crying over his body - to the start of the next episode.
This was the closest adaptation to the video game, although it was a DLC. A lot of people didn't like that because it didn't feel new, and just felt like a live action cut scene. They did change the end where it wasn't a horde of zombies chasing them, but a singular one. I thought this was more intimate and made it seem more realistic and shows just how brutal the infected are. A couple of kids that couldn't hold off just one makes the world seem that much more dangerous.
Yes, in the DLC it's multiple Infected that are after them, not just one. But to be fair, whenever Ellie and Riley fight one of them, it's just *one* Infected they are physically attacking. Once they kill that one they keep running because more are approaching. They are never physically fighting off multiple Infected in the DLC.
I mean both Ellie and Riley are so young and not trained well at this point. There's no way they actually survive as many as they did in the game. Same with Joel in KC or PA in the game. Makes more sense to scale things back from a director's point and how to make things tense but realistic in how people survive these things

I recently watched RRR and I thought it was an amazing movie. It's a Telugu-language film from India, but it's definitely worth checking out even if you're not familiar with Indian cinema. The film is set in the 1920s and tells the story of two revolutionaries who team up to fight against the British Raj. The action sequences are incredible, and the performances are top-notch. It's never explicitly stated (as far as I know) but as Ellie survived without being turned, she probably had to kill Riley in self defense when Riley turned as Riley would have attacked Ellie, just like Sam did in episode 5. So when Ellie stated that it wasn't her first time after shooting Joel's attacker in episode 4, she was likely referring to the death of Riley. 😭
In the game Ellie tells Tess how she got bit but she says that she was alone at the mall. She already knows Marlene at this point so she says that after she got bit and didn't turn she went to Marlene to find out what to do. But later you find out that she was there with Riley. Although Ellie never says it, it's clear that the two of them waited for both of them to turn, assuming it would happen at the same time, and when Riley turned but Ellie didn't, Infected-Riley would have attacked Ellie, who would have been forced to kill her.
At the end of episode 9, she does explicitly tell Joel that Riley was the first person she ever killed. She'd turned, of course, and that was left up in the air in the game, and up until that episode in the show it was also not explained. But in those last couple minutes of the show, she did indeed tell Joel quite clearly that she did kill Riley after she turned.

In MK lore, Baraka and Mileena are lovers and when Ellie and Riley play their last match in the game, Ellie (using Baraka) skewers and kills Riley (using Mileena), so that's their way of telling you that Ellie had to stab and kill Infected Riley...
Bro, I thought Captain Kwong (the guy she's getting scolded by over the fight at the beginning of the episode) was Ruffio from Hook (where Robin Williams was Peter Pan) all growed up. He's not. I looked him up. Kinda bummed. Whatever happened to Ruffio man? Does this episode look like it's all cgi to anyone else? Maybe it's just something about the low dpi on my TH-cam connection right now. But I've seen shitty quality before, and it never seemed like this. Maybe a combination of that and weirs lighting?
