10:59 I'm not exaggerating when I say that TV scene is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time, and a great example of how to give exposition in a way that's fun and engaging. The way it switches channels to form actual sentences while also obscuring the actual information is so brilliant
My favorite touch is that the zombies really do retain their basic personality traits. Phillip hated the loud noise. Pete met up with his friends at the pub. Ed just hangs out with Shaun playing videogames, and Barbara was completely passive until David yelled at Shaun
I always thought Barbara's reaction was just the loud noise of David's voice. Also, did Pete ever really have friends at the pub? I don't think that was really an established thing, I think it was just him following Ed to get him because he hated him so much.
Hey Addie! I don’t know if it’s in your October schedule but if you want an amazing horror comedy, you should definitely react to “Tucker and Dale vs Evil”! ❤
@@joeblankenship377Ya I actually did the same thing seeing it on netflix. I thought it was some knock off, low budget horror movie. Then I finally gave in an checked it out and absolutely loved it. I hope she adds it to her list for the month because it’s so good!
Such a great reaction! Some trivia: When asked by an interviewer why they chose to have slow moving zombies instead of running zombies, Simon Pegg simply replied, "Because death is not an energy drink." Many of the zombie extras are fans of Spaced, which also starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and was also directed by Edgar Wright. They were recruited through the Spaced Out fan website. Night of the Living Dead Director George A. Romero was given a private viewing of this movie near his house in Florida. During the scene in which Ed (Nick Frost) yells into the phone, "We're coming to get you, Barbara", Romero was oblivious to the fact it was a direct lift from his movie Night of the Living Dead, and only found out later after a phone conversation with Edgar Wright. He was so impressed with their work that he asked them to cameo in Land of the Dead as zombies.
‘Spaced’ was also co-written by Jessica Hynes, who played Yvonne in this movie. Also, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright got the idea for the movie after the episode of ‘Spaced’ where Tim (Simon Pegg) was playing Resident Evil 2, and then had the dream about being in a zombie apocalypse.
There's also a reference to the running zombies from 28 Days in the news reports at the end of Shaun of the Dead. You can overhear the journalist say (paraphrasing) "reports that the zombie outbreak was caused by a disease from escaped laboratory Monkeys have been dismissed as a load of [channel changes]"
Yes, she eventually managed to climb a tree high enough to stay clear of the zombies and stayed there for a few days, nibbling on David's leg from time to time. (Don't take my word for it, check out the DVD extra's yourselves.)
Loved the animated comic extras on the DVD! Edgar Wright aways makes sure to load his movies with special features. The special extras on the special edition of Hot Fuzz are insane, all the commentary tracks and the inclusion of one of his student films called Dead Wrong (or right, maybe?)
The plan that Ed comes up with at the Winchester after Shaun gets dumped by Liz is actually a beat-for-beat summary of all the events that will go down the following day: "Have a Bloody Mary's first thing (the first zombie they encounter is named Mary), a bite at the King's Head (Phillip gets bitten in the neck), couple at the Little Princess (Liz is the princess, David and Di are the couple), stagger back here (they pretend to be zombies); bang! Back at the bar for shots (the big shootout in the third act). Watching Edgar Wright's films multiple times is pretty much a necessity due to the sheer amount of foreshadowing and hidden hints he hides in the script. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one, it's pretty much a staple of modern British culture and ranked as one of our best comedy films alongside Hot Fuzz. You should definitely check out The World's End and complete the trilogy; it's not as popular as the other two, but I reckon it's one of the most underrated films to come out during the last few years and a really great conclusion to the trilogy
notice that the zombie pushing the cart at the end is the student who used to work with Shaun. Nice to consider that the rude teen didn't advance in life but Shaun did.
Both Zombieland movies are good horror/comedy (they're pretty messy though) but my favorite is probably the Army of Darkness. All are worth looking at.
Horror comedies might be your bag? Obviously the often mentioned "Tucker & Dale vs. Evil", and you might consider "Zombieland" also and "What We Do in the Shadows". Not quite a comedy, but really interesting horror satire can be found in "The Cabin in the Woods". Anyway, just a few suggestions for you.
Shaun's friend who he runs into who leads the other group that's a mirror of Shaun's group is played by Jessica Hynes (although I believe she was Jessica Stevenson back then). Prior to Shaun of the Dead, Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes starred in a TV show called Spaced, so this was a bit of a reunion, and the way they're talking about things and catching up is a nod to the show they starred in together (which the British audience would almost certainly have been familiar with). Spaced had very similar humour to Shaun of the Dead in a lot of ways, but it was much more out there. Nick Frost also co-starred in Spaced, but Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes were the 2 leads.
I heard somewhere that they initially came up with the idea for Shaun of the Dead after filming the Spaced episode where Tim is hallucinating about zombies after several hours of staying awake on speed and playing Resident Evil.
fun fact: there is a comic showing that the actress survived and was later rescued from a tree she was stuck in for long enough to resort to eating the leg.
Points to Shaun for running in to try to rescue David a minute after David tried to shoot him. There's an animated scene showing that Di actually survived. After World's End I recommend "Paul" and "Scott Pilgrim Vs the World"...also "Zombieland", "Tucker & Dale Vs Evil" and "Cabin in the Woods".
Shaun walking obliviously back to his flat while zombies are walking about, reminds me of people looking at their phones and being completely unaware of their surroundings. The Zombie are here, and they are us
And the day an outbreak finally happens, a lot of these phone addicts will no doubt be caught and eaten alive whilst trying to livestream or record the Damn event.
12:03-12:07 "She's still alive? How do we kill them then?" I had to pause the reaction and contemplate what I just heard... I naturally assumed that everyone knew that to kill a zombie you have to destroy the brain. I was truly taken aback. But I admit, I loved that you didn't know that
The start of the movie is basically foreshadowing or maybe you should say they're just mirroring each other for example when he goes to the shop the first time, all the same things happens exept people are zombies/being chased and there's a TON of more things like that throughout. I love Edgar Wright :D
If you want a good, short Zombie series, Dead Set is when a zombie outbreak happens during a series of Big Brother, with the housemates having no idea what's going on outside.
The godfather of zombie movies George Romero was a huge fan of this movie, so much that he gave Simon Pegg and Nick Frost cameo parts in "Land of the Dead".
Simon (Shaun), Nick (Ed) and Edgar (the director) had a sitcom on British TV called Spaced and although it was a surreal mix of everything they always loved to throw movie tropes in to the show and that is what gave birth to the Cornetto Trilogy. Shaun of the Dead plays on zombie movies like Night of the Living Dead, Hot Fuzz plays on buddy cop movies like Point Break, and The World's End plays on alien invasion movies like the Body Snatchers. The guys had so many silly ideas for each episode in the show that they basically just created a trilogy of movies where they could satirise each subject to the fullest.
I love this movie. So many great clever lines in it and foreshadowing humor etc. Some of my favorites are the "I think they're for me" flowers moment. And the "there's nothing left of the man you loved in that car" ::turns off the loud music:: zombie Philip moment. Glad you enjoyed!

The legend George A. Romero created the modern zombie with Night of the Living Dead in 1968. He actually really liked this movie and he gave Simon Pegg a cameo as a zombie in his next zombie movie, Land of the Dead in 2005. Compare that to a few years later when Romero refused a request by the producers of The Walking Dead to direct some episodes. RIP George A. Romero
All three movies in the Cornetto trilogy are about adulthood. Shaun of the Dead: Becoming a responsible adult. Hot Fuzz: Work/Life Balance The World's End: Middle age

You might recognize Shaun's roommate from the first Guardians of the Galaxy, and John Wick 2. People rarely recognize he was the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace.
That was fun! After Cornetto another Pegg/Frost movie is ‘Paul’ with a great cast including Jason Bateman plus some SNL alumni and voice work by Serh Rogan.
According to a "Shawn of the Dead" comic Diane actually survives by clubbing the zombies with Davids leg until she can climb a tree. IIRC she actually eats davids leg while up in the tree too. Lmaoooooooo.
Interesting that everyone that stood in the way of their relationship or of Shaun becoming his own man and more responsible was eaten or became a zombie. Diane and David were anchors for Liz and David was in the way having a torch for Liz and trying to twist the knife when he thought they were over. Ed was the friend he looked after although he put him at odds with his roommate and Liz. His mom and his stepdad he had to let go of both of them as they both represented his past and not his future.
You really need to watch Paul which came out around 2010 staring the same duo, where they hire a campervan to tours the States, but end up meeting an escaped alien.
A great zombie movie recommendation for this year's spooky season is " Night of the Living Dead 1990 " it's the quintessential zombie movie. Nick Frost and Simon Pegg have said in interviews that it was their biggest inspiration for Shawn of the dead
If you're going to finish the Cornetto Trilogy with The World's End, I suggest going back and reacting to Spaced, the BBC comedy series, with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and directed by Edgar Wright years before Shaun of the Dead. It has fourteen episodes split over two series (seasons) of seven apiece, and it's a real gem. Each episode takes its influence from a Hollywood movie and the Matrix-inspired episode was one of my favorites.
My two favorite trivia things about this movie: Ed basically explains the plot of the movie when they're in the Winchester the night before everything goes down (We'll have a "Bloody Mary" alluding to the zombie in the back yard named Mary.) The other thing is when Ed asks "Are there zombies out there?" and Shaun tells him not to say that word... because they almost literally never use the word "zombie" in any zombie movies, at least the older ones. They always say things like "undead", "living dead", "infected", etc.
I read somewhere that George A Romero never intended Night of the Living Dead to be about zombies. They were ment to be ghouls but when everyone kept asking him how his zombie film was going, in the end rather than correcting them, he just gave up and started saying "yeah fine" 🤔
21:39 I never caught that one before, but this is very similar to the scene in Hot Fuzz, only that time he did jump the fences successfully. 34:14 I guess that whatever part of Eddie that mattered to Shaun is left?
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Everything about it is brilliant. Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and everyone else involved in this movie is a genius! You should watch the George Romero "Living Dead" trilogy which was the primary inspiration for this film! "Night of the Living Dead", "Dawn of the Dead", and "Day of the Dead". They are certainly scary and gruesome movies but they are also defining pieces of pop culture!
Great reaction Addie. Fun fact Liz's friend actually survived. In the special features there's a storyboard about how she escapes by hiding in a tree for a couple days. I think she also had to eat one of Daf's leg in order to survive before she could safely get away

Horror Comedies, and B-Horror movies are the BEST way to get into Horror if you're struggling.
On my list of all time great zombie movies, this one is at number 2. Only behind Night of the Living Dead!
The cornetto trilogy is so good. Hot Fuzz is my personal fav of the 3.
The man who played Shaun , played a Zombie in land of the dead. The producer offered him a part and he insisted on playing a zombie.
Another good one people seem to forget about is Peter Jackson's "The Frighteners" with Michael J Fox.
Is it better then Bad Taste?
One of the employed zombies is the guy whom was busting Shaun's chops earlier in the movie.😂
A great lighthearted zombie flick is Fido.
This movie was made for you! They are just fucking with people with all the dumb jump scares and you're the perfect mark😂❤
This film is in my top 20 British movies and my top 10 comedy films.
Need to see Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil now, BEST comedy horror ever!
I saw a sneak preview of this. my gf and I got beanies with a bullseye on them that said 'Aim for the head'
21:13 For those of us damn dirty Americans, Martin Freeman and Lucy Davis were Tim and Dawn on the original Office.
one of my favorite little details is that edd is selling drugs to shaun's rude employee.
Addie, every time I hear Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now' I think of this movie :-)
Also a great movie to look at is Odd Thomas from 2013. Definitely worth it!
"Zombies I guess don't really get me" - Allie 34:32
That's because they don't have your braaaiiinnsss
in the special features on the dvd liz's girlfriend survives to. she makes it to a tree by beating zombies away from her with david's leg
21:39 I never caught that one before, but this is very similar to the scene in Hot Fuzz, only that time he did jump the fences successfully.
34:14 I guess that whatever part of Eddie that mattered to Shaun is left?
This has been a long time regular October watch alongside Cabin In The Woods. Love them both.
Happy 21st Anniversary to Shaun of the Dead!
Zombieland is a good comedy/horror also. Think it even has a sequel.
Great reaction Addie. Fun fact Liz's friend actually survived. In the special features there's a storyboard about how she escapes by hiding in a tree for a couple days. I think she also had to eat one of Daf's leg in order to survive before she could safely get away
> Zombie gets impaled
Addie: "How is she still alive?!"
I think you're missing a fundamental aspect of what makes a zombie ... a zombie.
I'm sure someone's coverd it be check out "Spaced" "Greenwing" and "Blackbooks" all great comedy shows from this era
35:38 - (Looks back at the part where she was confused about the basic fact of how to kill a zombie)
(Insert "You don't say?" meme here)
I think the last time I watched a comedy at the cinema. So much fun! I almost remember the night.
Good reaction too, thanks for sharing.
