At this price point it is much better to get second hand gear. Honestly, it's easy to find a used guitar that's looks as good as new, and in store they will be set up. Buying new online is probably worse than buying used in store at this price - £300 guitars online won't be set up and may come damaged. If you want new though, Squier Classic Vibe Strats, Epiphone Les Pauls and ESP LTD's are all good choices, along with a Vox Valvetronix or Blackstar Core ID 10/20.
Ken Hall I have two, a wine red 50s reissue single coils and a Blacktop cherry red double humbucker. Great guitars, for what I would have paid for one American Standard Strat, I got two Strats. I also have a Les Paul Studio, so I've been looking to buy a Gibson with P90s, especially an SG, and all of them go for at least 700 bucks used. You should suscribe to Scott Grove's groovy DJ channel, really informative and he's always saying that it's not necessary to spend a thousand bucks for guitar, with 500 to 700 bucks, there are a lot of very good options out there.
+Leigh Foulkes Never really tried Epis before. A bandmate had an Epi SG, I fiddled around with it but found it a bit uncomfortable. Still can't believe that LP P90 goldtop went that cheap in the vid.
I have two Guitar Centers within an hour of me. The Oklahoma City store is a lot bigger than the Tulsa store, and they have a lot more used inventory. It depends on the size of the market what size store they build.
Mini Surf Guitar speculation is an amazingly fun hobby. I just recently landed an Epiphone Dave Navarro "Jane" acoustic/electric that retails at GC for $659 at a shop that had it marked down because the G had fret buzz. I got out the door with it for $189. I put a new bone nut on it and sold it for $550 in a $45 dreadnought case that I found marked down to half price on Musician's Friend. Awesome guitar, too. I would have kept it if I had played it before I told her I was flipping it. Ebony fretboard, bone nut, and the coolest inlays ever created.
I recently bought a “Sub Zero” (Gear fo music) guitar, for £140 and I was pretty sure it was going to be crap. Thing is, it isn’t, it’s actually great fun, stays in tune remarkably well (better than my B&G crossroads for example) neck straight, P90’s etc. Frets needed filing and pups needed screwing down, but it’s quickly become my home go to guitar. I’m sure it’s made of wooden crates and matchwood, but who cares, it sounds and plays great! One thing to note; it arrived in a cardboard box; no padding, no protection, polystyrene etc. The fact it arrived in one piece means the build must be fairly ok....
I'd find it a lot more interesting if you did this without buying used, since it's not very helpful if you only get stuff you propably aren't going to find anywhere else.
I believe that looking for used stuff is great!!! here in Greece we have so little that most of the used stuff are so highly priced it doesn't even matter. however there seems to be a legit strategy
shoominati23 I feel you man. I didn't play my guitar before buying it. I played sth similar I found on a different store and then I ordered the one I wanted. And it is was a middle range Jackson around 600 euros from x range
rockbay79 Pretty sure reverb isn't particularly economic in europe. Don't know if they even ship here, but if they do shipment cost and our sales tax would put the prices way out of the bargain range.
Remember back when it was the Peavey Backstage instead of Blackstar amps? Ugh! God I hated that stupid Saturation, but when you're 14 and you want to play stuff liek Iron Maiden 7 Judas Priest, and that's what you can afford, that's what you get. My first guitar was a Memphis brand Les Paul that my dad bought me for Christmas in 1977 for around $150 from "The Doo-Wop Shop" when we lived in Louisville, KY. My first amp was a Univox solid state amp that was about a 50 or 60 watt combo that was either a 2x10" or a 10" & a 12" - instead of the speakers being side by side, they were one over top of the other. My dad bought the amp from some guy used for like $50 in January or February of 1978. The amp had a great clean tone, but no overdrive, and no matter how loud I turned it up, it never gave me the "KISS Sound" I was looking for, so I rarely ever messed with it. I was like 9. Had guitar lessons, and eventually learned about distortion pedals (an older friend had the original RAT pedal and that was the first one I'd seen.)
I bought an old Gorilla in a pawn shop a while back, just for nostalgia. They are a unique part of guitar history, tons of people had them, and I think they are cool.
A $400 les Paul with p-90s? That thing was either broken at some point or stolen. Think about it. Someone actually sold that probably once $2000+ guitar for $200 to that store.
Cheapest "Gibson" you`ll find... no binding, not as well made.... if it was a strat it would be similar to a made-in-mexico.. but for this les paul it`s one step up from Epiphone with Gibson on the headstock.
The Gibson was an unusual find and a great choice, but that was very rare. The amp had no bottom end and seemed tinny compared to the earlier blackstar you used. I didn't notice you trying out any Vox or Line 6 amps which would be my preference. Fender Mustang is also very good for the price.
I had that same gold top with cream p-90's. Hell of a guitar. I was in it at $800 used with a Gibson case. $400. Wow. I see your death grip on it the rest of the video. ;-)
Nice deal on the LP. However, I would have suffered through something a bit cheaper (yet still really comfortable) and gone bigger on the amp. I went on Music123 / Musician's friend to check out what I'd buy with $500 and here's what I came up with:JACKSON JS-22 DINKY...(new)...$199PEAVEY VYPYR VIP 3, 100W , 1 x 12 COMBO AMP..(new)..$299
you guys have it Good too. im from guyana and the best guitar you can get over here is a chinese made guitar for $200usd. it completely sucks. And guitar music isnt even big over here.
Srsly im from the Philippines and I haven't seen a guitar store that big also if there was it would be probably full of local guitars and atleast 2-5 gibsons or ibanez
Great choices! So glad you went with the Gibson/Blackstar; what a great combo for the price. Love the video. Would love to see this as a series/giveaway type deal.
I bought a Kramer Baretta and Fender Mustang amp for 450 bucks, for the pair. And it's probably my favourite gear. And I've got other guitars in the 2k range. It's not all about money. Lots of cheap guitars are freaking awesome quality
you speak the truth. I have a Gibson SG standard i paid a little over $1k for a few years back and recently in the past 2 months I bought a new G&L Legacy Tribute for $400 and a used G&L Fallout Tribute for only $300! Both actually sound and play fantastic. Still love using my cheap used Boss Katana with all these guitars also.
My £500 rig (aka my current rig cos I'm 14 and poor) Orange Micro Dark head £129 Vox 1x12 cab £109 Epiphone Les Paul traditional pro (on offer) £279 Okay £510, but that's not that bad, right?
You had a difficult time letting that Les Paul out of your hand let alone out of sight... then the price tag suddenly disappeared. Funny. Nice find! The Gorilla was a part of my early life as well and that thing was a hot mess of distorted pleasure. We took every opportunity to knock on it but the price was in line for a teen's budget.
Love to watch someone who can really play the guitar. I tried to learn to play but my patience ran out quickly. I was a big Chet Atkins fan as a kid and loved listening to him play. I’m 78 now and still envious of people that are really good players. Some really decent prices on guitars in that store. I’m in Canada so at least 30% more up here with the dollar difference.👍👍
A little weird to me, but I'm using a hybrid jazzmaster and jaguar guitar called the Jagmaster. Its a little thick, but not super so. Been a long time since I've been to a guitar store. So cool
I appreciate your time and effort in showing me how to get the most for my budgeted cash--- I learned a lot just from y'all checking out the different types of guitars and amps --and why you chose the set you did -- Thanks man
If you have a guitar that has humbuckers, you can get those P90s made for that size too. I've wanted to do that for a while now. P90 in the neck of my LP...
I just bought a new Squier Bullet Mustang HH for $150, spent $65 on a setup, and it plays as good or better than any $1000+ Fender I've ever owned. Sounds decent, but not great, so I'm fishing for pickups for it.
This was enjoyable to watch. Because we all know Phil knows his shit like crazy. I felt like I was there or I was Phil or something. Yeah I’d love to see an updated version of this
I would tell my choice before watching the.video. just for fun. I bought a MIM Telecaster for $500 and for another $500 I would add a Fender Blues Juniour or Bugera V40 :)
If I lived that side of the pond with a guitar centre like that I’d own a a large guitar collection.I know it’s four years ago but those prices are crazy
Even people from the US are shocked by the prices. Aside from the gibby, a used Fernandez sustainer guitar for 300?! I even saw an iceman guitar in the background and it was on the bottom it had to cheap too.
I feel so validated that you thought the Blackstar Fly 3 was awesome, lol. That is my only amp right now and I love it, but I am new and sometimes feel like maybe I only love it because I dont know any better!
Very cool video! I enjoyed it a lot. I am a beginning guitar player and just bought a Squier Vintage Modified '70s Stratocaster Sweetwater Exclusive - Translucent Blue w/ Maple Fingerboard for $300 and a Fender Mustang I V.2 20-watt 1x8" Modeling Combo Amp for $120. I did tons of research and love the tones coming out of both the guitar and amp. It is probably more than I should have spent with me being a beginner but I wanted something that would last me a long time. I would rather grow "into" the rig than grow "out of" it.
Yeah mate was just thinking the same. Imagine the joy at finding a Gibson Les Paul for that price in Australia. I did find a 2013 Gibson SGJ for AUD$500 on gumtree and it's one of the best guitars I've ever played.
+Al Abusharif no it's the local distributors mark up. They gouge the hell out of us. It's cheaper for me to fly to the USA and buy a high end Gibson there and fly back with it than it is to buy one locally. Fender are the same.
Josh Battershell i know right. the place near me has crap equipment and i had it cleaned by what im guessing was the luthier and he tried to grill me on i need a tuner because he had to tune it and adjust the rod and then stopped when u said i had it adjusted for c standard tuning lol what a joker
Josh Battershell I like my local music shop, theyre nice, knowledgeable people who'll give you some great deals on new gear;however, they can't stock anything that nice because we live in a small town and it would never get sold. You got to think about it from the businesses perspective, they can't just go out and get 20 new les Pauls when they know they can't even sell one. You can always order stuff through the music shop but at that point it may be cheaper to go online.
If you are confident in your ability to identify what guitars people want, use the market situation to your advantage. First save up money, then travel to a major city (ideally where you can stay with relatives or friends for free, or you can couch surf or something to get accommodation costs down). Anyway, make sure it is a city with a great selection of guitars and stiff competition between guitar stores. Bring as much cash as you can, or use a credit card. Shop around carefully. Buy as many great deal guitars (that you think will be resellable) as you can afford, go back home - sell all of them to other people in your area, except for the guitar you like the most. Make sure you charge enough money in between to pay for your expenses and as much as possible of the guitar you choose to keep.
(If you aren't confident about how many guitars you can sell locally, then sell the guitars on eBay instead. Make sure you allow international buyers if you want access to a larger market.)
Yeah - That's a no brainer... a Gibson LP for under $400? Just awesome. The Blackstars are great, But I would have gotten the Orange. Cool video. Cheers from Costa Rica.
Looking at all the cool stuff. is part of the reason for going to the music store. being as I'm a huge Charvel fan. that would be hard to resist. but that. $400.00 Les Paul would be about impossible to resist. good choice you did pick the LP I'd love to get a deal like that. $518..00 that was a perfect deal. exactly what you were looking to pay.

In the used world, I keep seeing Epiphone ES-335s around US$500. Very hard to ignore those. Lots of PRS SE Standards at this price level too. This price level is a great place to buy a used guitar.
Score on the Les Paul! I'm looking at all the used prices you have there in Arizona and they are MUCH lower than in the RI area. We don't have Sam Ash, but our Guitar Center asks ridiculous prices for used gear.
If it helps any, I wanted to see what GC did for markups so I sold them an old PRS I had. They gave me $180 with the case and the next day it was on the site used for $299. I talked to the manager about the markup and he said that they are allowed to discount their used gear up to 15%, but they get to pick and choose when. Try it next time. Also, don't *EVER* buy a used guitar from their website without calling the store and having an employee put their hands on it and check it out for you. If it's over $300 ask them to e-mail you some more pictures, too. If you like it, call back and have the employee that did the work ring it up for you so that they get the commission. They can even go to the manager with your offer!

Yeah classic vibe lineup is great and also maybe even as good or better, the vintage modified lineup. There are a lot of quality guitars at budget prices now days. My favs are Gretsch streamliners and the Squier classic vibe and vintage modified. They have a new contemporary series I’ve yet to try but I’m sure are nice.

At this price point it is much better to get second hand gear. Honestly, it's easy to find a used guitar that's looks as good as new, and in store they will be set up. at this point im more amazed when i dont see your comments on random videos im watching
bakerXderek Holy shit it's baker!! I love you man I don't know how in the mushroom tip I found you on a guitar video
This guy commented on one of my other Channels videos
He's so happy there, like a musician in a music store
Where the hell is that Sam Ash where you can get a Gibson Les Paul with P90s for $350????
I need to go to that Sam Ash O_o
IMO, the best new guitar for under $500 is a MIM Fender Strat
I was happy to get an Epiphone Les Paul for $350 (well, it was a custom Les Paul though)!!!
+Leigh Foulkes Never really tried Epis before. A bandmate had an Epi SG, I fiddled around with it but found it a bit uncomfortable.
Still can't believe that LP P90 goldtop went that cheap in the vid.
That was at the peoria Sam ash I believe?
I wish we had a Sam Ash around here. From what I've seen in this video, they have approximately 4 times the inventory of my local Guitar Center!
I have two Guitar Centers within an hour of me. The Oklahoma City store is a lot bigger than the Tulsa store, and they have a lot more used inventory. It depends on the size of the market what size store they build.
Young Frankenstein Thanks for the info. My nearest Guitar Center (Tonawanda NY) only has about 15 used guitars on display at a time.
Can I just say, it's amazing that your guitar shop is in a place that looks EXACTLY like "Tonewood".
Mark Cheetah theres 8 in the NYC area within an hour away from me...sad part I visit these stores more than I practice looking for used guitars.
Can you buy from Reverb.com? They sell new and used. Very good deals, from time-to-time. Check it out, if you can.
rockbay79 Pretty sure reverb isn't particularly economic in europe. Don't know if they even ship here, but if they do shipment cost and our sales tax would put the prices way out of the bargain range.
ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE
Was it Zeppelin day or something, they must have played all of Physical Graffiti
ten years gone
I caught that when I heard Ten Years Gone, In the Light and Kashmir. Must've been Physical Graffiti day.
Boogie with stu was on too! Best day ever tho 🤷🏼♂️
I guess I'm not the only one to notice
wouldn't it have been ironic if they had played the 4th album and 'Stairway to Heaven" came on?
Shitload of Zeppelin playing in that store 👍👏🏻👂
no stairway?
philipb stairway? Denied!
Nothing wrong with that
kashmir at the start
I missed that.
I LOVE my Peavey Amps, in all shapes & forms, and even the Sat control.........
I still have an old gorilla amp that I love cranking, the absolute crap sound is nice lol
Irish Kid Productions I’ve seen a few at my local Music Go Round.
It is a tribute guitar. They went for about 800 new.
Cheapest "Gibson" you`ll find... no binding, not as well made.... if it was a strat it would be similar to a made-in-mexico.. but for this les paul it`s one step up from Epiphone with Gibson on the headstock.
stolen guitar dont buy
Wrong. Sam ash always had $399-$499 matte les Paul's back I. 2011-2015. Don't know why.
*plays every Zeppelin song ever*
That album (physical graffiti) is absolutely great
Aidan Bouw nah it’s Zeppelin
@@capula3344 whoosh

When's a new Little Britain season?
Thanks for the advice, but I called Sam ash asking for that les Paul at that price and the guy started laughing at me.
Fool knew what he found with the used Gibson...wasn't letting go of it the whole video so it didn't get snatched by another costumer lmao.
$400. Wow. I see your death grip on it the rest of the video. ;-)
"I don't think we brought enough money." -Guitar Player's Lament
Nice deal on the LP. However, I would have suffered through something a bit cheaper (yet still really comfortable) and gone bigger on the amp. I went on Music123 / Musician's friend to check out what I'd buy with $500 and here's what I came up with:JACKSON JS-22 DINKY...(new)...$199PEAVEY VYPYR VIP 3, 100W , 1 x 12 COMBO AMP..(new)..$299
Americans have it so good. in Canada, the only chain we have is long and mcquade which only has about 40 guitars and 20 of them are squiers
you guys have it Good too. im from guyana and the best guitar you can get over here is a chinese made guitar for $200usd. it completely sucks. And guitar music isnt even big over here.
Try Capitalism... It's good M'Kay?

Srsly im from the Philippines and I haven't seen a guitar store that big also if there was it would be probably full of local guitars and atleast 2-5 gibsons or ibanez
Karmin Chylyn may store sa sm north edsa punong puno ng gibson saka fender saka music man, pero bnew lahat so $$$

This video exposed me to the blackstar fly 3 and also influenced my purchase of it. Thank you!
I love that you are also an incredible guitarist on top of knowing so much about gear and luthier work. Great channel and great video.
I’d buy a Squier telecaster, an orange crush and spent the rest on setup and upgrades for the tele
Snobdoggle it would depend on the quality and feel of it first. I got a Squier affinity strat and it has a neck that I just love so I upgraded it
I wouldn't
Fender Tremolo you wouldn’t what?? Your reply lacks any backbone and doesn’t really do anything to communicate any point at all.
Snobdoggle cable
This happens to be my exact setup and it's great
Can't ever go wrong with P90s. Sounds and looks beautiful.
This video is really lot of fun to watch. so many guitars..The used Charvel for 299 $ sounded amazing.. good for metal players..
My £500 rig
(aka my current rig cos I'm 14 and poor)
Orange Micro Dark head £129
Vox 1x12 cab £109
Epiphone Les Paul traditional pro (on offer) £279
Okay £510, but that's not that bad, right?
that's $665 american which would put you well over his limit
Not bad at all
nice rig m8
+Jimmy Parris good words...
The Epiphone LP 60s Tribute Plus beats it, but is more expensive.
did the shop owner play the whole physical graffiti album?
rburkl basically
That Sam ash has an awesome used section. Just the japanese Ibanez’s alone and the Gibson les Paul is a steal.
Wow! used guitars in USA are super cheap and so much choice in that guitar shop.
No wonder all you gear heads in the US own so many guitars.
Yeah that was ridiculous. Up here in rural canada everything is double that unless you want to look at the wall of cheap squires
@Lord_haven111 Find me the Larrivee I want and let's trade hah
But every cheap used guitar has been bought expensively at some point of time...
Damn, I never realized how thin those S-Series Ibanez guitars are.
A little weird to me, but I'm using a hybrid jazzmaster and jaguar guitar called the Jagmaster. Its a little thick, but not super so. Been a long time since I've been to a guitar store. So cool
I appreciate your time and effort in showing me how to get the most for my budgeted cash---
I learned a lot just from y'all checking out the different types of guitars and amps --and why you chose the set you did --
Thanks man
I bought the same Switch with upgraded pups and pots... I love it!

I think i had stroke...
Good choice. I would probably have picked the Les Paul too. P90s are awesome.
And if you get sick of the P90's then mini humbuckers are a direct drop in replacement
If you have a guitar that has humbuckers, you can get those P90s made for that size too. I've wanted to do that for a while now. P90 in the neck of my LP...
RIP Sam Ash. My favorite guitar store in the valley 😢
I just can't believe the Blackstar Fly sounds as good as it does.
I just bought a new Squier Bullet Mustang HH for $150, spent $65 on a setup, and it plays as good or better than any $1000+ Fender I've ever owned. Sounds decent, but not great, so I'm fishing for pickups for it.
Watched this again I'm still blown away at those cheap prices
10:47 my dream guitar is the second from the left. Paul Stanley sig model

I would tell my choice before watching the.video. just for fun.
I bought a MIM Telecaster for $500 and for another $500 I would add a Fender Blues Juniour or Bugera V40 :)

I have a Gibson Les Paul 50s Tribute and I absolutely love it, I’ve had it for a year so far and it’s my main guitar.
Great Video!!! Please do more videos like this in the Music Store! Very helpful, thanks
All these years I thought Sam Ash was just an online store haha.
It was just be an online store eventually.
I used to shop at our local Sam Ash in Glendale, AZ this was like 20 years ago. You just never know what you'll find at Sam Ash.
3:50 - I'm 34 years old, and my main practice amp is a Gorilla GG-25. It sounds great.
That 013 Gibson LP tribute 50s he bought is 3 times that price today.
When I saw the titles i would of NEVER guessed that you got a Gibson Les Paul, an amp, and money to spare for $500
Watching this is 2024 is insane. You can't even buy a Squire for those prices. $400 Gibson?! There are $1800 Epiphones for sale 😵💫
Man I'd love to go to a physical store again. This store in particular is killer
i live in the wrong country, that lp probably would have cost 1100 here lol
Yeah mate was just thinking the same. Imagine the joy at finding a Gibson Les Paul for that price in Australia. I did find a 2013 Gibson SGJ for AUD$500 on gumtree and it's one of the best guitars I've ever played.
nice find
1100AUD is 843USD....i guess the cost of getting to Australia doubles the cost?
+Al Abusharif no it's the local distributors mark up. They gouge the hell out of us. It's cheaper for me to fly to the USA and buy a high end Gibson there and fly back with it than it is to buy one locally. Fender are the same.
Australia. They're around the same here I think. With the conversion ofc.
The only guitar stores near me have absolute shit compared to what other stores have.
Josh Battershell i know right. the place near me has crap equipment and i had it cleaned by what im guessing was the luthier and he tried to grill me on i need a tuner because he had to tune it and adjust the rod and then stopped when u said i had it adjusted for c standard tuning lol what a joker
Josh Battershell
Hey, that's my local sam ash. Hope to someday run into ol' Phillip there.... That'd be sweet.

The best home / jam amp is the Fender Champion 40 for all around use for most amateur musicians. Then check around for a nice used guitar.
Here in CT, guitar center usually has pretty good deals on used (because they give close to nothing for them). Never been to the Sam Ash.
which guitar center, Jon? I'm guessing you're close to NY City?
+krelbar All of the CT Guitar Centers. Southington has the best deals out of the ones I've been to (Orange, Manchester, Southington.) it's small though.
Closest one to me is Manchester and its 1hour 20 minutes. Usually if I want to find a deal, I go to Speen St in Natick...about an hour. Just have to say that RI, Millbury and N. Attleboro sucks...especially for Used gear
You should make this again with the $600 Covid relief. 😂
