Removing a Seized Impeller Shaft Bearing on a Snowblower

  • Step by Step!
    Today we'll be removing a seized impeller shaft bearing on a Craftsman snow blower.
    We'll be using the Induction Innovations Venom HP induction heating tool, and a Split Bearing Puller to remove the bearing from the shaft.
    The induction heat is just used to expand the metal bearing, and make it easier for the split puller to remove it from the shaft. (An oxy-acetylene torch would work as well). However, without using some form of heat, you may damaged parts of your split puller, as it will be harder to remove things.
    Once the bearing is hot, we assemble and use the split puller to remove it.
    Finally, once the bearing has been removed, we clean up the shaft with some emery paper (fine sand paper) and apply some Permatex Nickel Anti-seize to prevent this bearing from seizing to the shaft in the future.

    Hey man! Gotta say love your videos..I tore apart my craftsman snowblower and your vids saved me..changed belts,oil,greesed everything,new shoes, new auger bearing only because it was seized on there and had to be torched off. No small engine mechanics around town anymore and the one that is your put on a waiting lists for months. Just a shout out yiyr helping tons of people out. Great job.God bless. D

    Nice textbook demonstration. For the folks without a split puller, a 3” air cutoff tool and hammer and chisel will work too. Actually you can get them off faster than the time it takes to setup the puller. The bigger pain can be the pulley. For that I weld nuts or bolts onto the side of pulley sleeve and from there I can use a steering wheel puller or heavier gear puller. Once off, cut welded on nuts/bolts off. For replacement options on some of these snowblower bearings oem is the correct way, but if a guy is handy universal flanges and bearings can be found at many farm stores. New holes may have to be drilled but it can be done.

      Any chance you would know what puller matches up to the impeller pulley holes on the Yamaha YS928J snowblower? The service manual only refers to a puller for the stator, which is also a 3 hole puller. I didn’t think to measure the bolt hole pattern when I had it apart.

    Buy OTC. They cost more but their tools are as good as it can get and nave fail you. I have a drum puller, ball joint set, and the puller you show. I use them with a light electric impact on occation but most likely just hands. These tools and acetylene heat are a must.

      Really enjoying using this induction heat gun, but as mentioned, it's definitely not needed. The split puller really comes in handy though!

    Great video , With the quality of parts slipping this will be a fix the you will see more often . If you do not have a puller or a induction heater , a very careful cut with a grinder will work or a propane torch maybe helpful .

    Great video on possible problem on removing befaring, ball befaring is the best some blower use only bronce bushing not good

    When using the puller, use a 1/4" drill bit to create an indentation in the center of the bolt head so that the puller doesn't slide around and slip off

    With a thin blade on a grinder, grind down beside the shaft, cutting open the cup (inside) tube of the Bearing very close to the shaft. Likely Hammer or Air Chisel will then remove Shaft. Done.
    Do not over use the hammer or chisel or you may damage gears in gearbox.

    I noticed your bearing has no keyway. I've worked on some Murray noma units that have keyway. On none keyed I've seen bearing seize in race so shaft turns in bearing and a groove wears in shaft. Last case I used jb weld to fill the groove.

      Yes, some seem to have them, others don't. Many of the new ones only have the keyway in the pulley now

    Another question, please. I ended up buying a new impeller shaft for my snowblower. (It was seized on and pretty pitted when I got them apart. Even after cleaning it up it was a bit loose with the impeller fitment). On the original shaft the shaft was painted between the bearing housing and the worm gear housing. I imagine this was to protect the exposed shaft from rust. Wondering if just coating the new one in ‘anti-seize’ (and keeping it coated throughout the snow season) in your opinion would be a reasonable way to go? I am thinking that if I paint it, then it will prevent me from pulling the new impeller off once in a while to re apply anti seize, to prevent it getting seized on, again. Thanks.

      Antiseize would work great, I use it on bare metal all the time. Apply it heavily as it's cheap insurance!

    Smooth video son, actually it seemed a lot shorter than what the actual time of the video was. The Mini-Ductor has been a very useful tool in the shop, especially on bolts with red Locktite. The OLD MAN wants to know when he is going to be able to do a video LOL!

    I saw another guy on youtube advocate beating on the shaft with a hammer to seperate the bearing from the shaft, do you agree that beating on that shaft with a heavy hammer might damage the worm gear in the gear box
