The nerdy girl with glasses and tied up hair who is bullied for being different. Once the protagonist takes off her prescription glasses and unties her hair, she's suddenly super beautiful and attractive. Now that she has assimilated with the hivemind, everyone loves her now. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs did a very clever reversal of this trope. That's one of the many reasons I love that movie.

A bad twist ending. A good twist ending will put the rest of the movie into a new context and make you realize how all of the pieces fit together. A bad twist ending will make the entire rest of the movie not make sense and confuse you. Your reaction to a twist ending should be, "Wow, it all makes sense! How did I not see that coming?" and not, "Wait, what? But what about- why did they do this and that if they were trying to- What?"

In a certain way, a twist ending should both be obvious and unexpected. It should make perfect sense but also twist the story in a different direction to give it more depth, as opposed to the cheap ones that are thrown in near the end for no other reason than to make the movie longer. There are plenty of good examples where a movie has a twist ending that completely flips the story on it's side but still stays true to the films roots, and actually makes a decent amount of sense. On the other hand, there are plenty that throw something in at the last minute that either doesn't really change much, or changes too much and makes the past hour or two feel unrelated, unimportant, or useless.
A really, really good and popular example of a good twist ending is The Sixth Sense. The main character's reveal was shocking, but felt natural and unforced. Plus, re-watching it and noticing all of the verbal hints that were left behind gave a whole new feel to the movie as a whole, and gradually made more and more sense as time went on.

A good twist ending is a puzzle piece.
A bad twist ending is another picture entirely.
      Example 1 good twist, megamind
      Example 2 bad twist, frozen

    • @steverempel8584
      @steverempel8584 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah, those bad twist endings seem to be a result of the writer making up a scenario to make it look one way, but really be another way. Then when they develop the details of the main story, they just focus on how the scenario appears, and it ends up developing in ways that contradicts the twist. Then when the twist happens, it now contradicts what the scenario was presented as.
A very simple an basic example would be: Movie has a bad guy who kills puppies, it turns out he's not such a bad guy after all. Problem is, they added the "Killing Puppies" bit later to make him seem worse than he really is, but it contradicts him being good deep down. Same sort of things can happen with character motivations and plot details, screwing up what's really going to sell the illusion that will be twisted at the end of the movie.

To be fair, if the camera is set up so it's looking at the driver from the perspective of the passengers seat and the to characters are having a deep conversation, you can almost guarantee the very next frame will be a sudden truck T-boning the drivers side. If their conversation was particularly heartfelt and meaningful, that usually means one of the characters will die in the crash. In short: Bringing babies. (Only applies to movie theaters. Go nuts at home.)
I could go on forever about how it annoys me when people bring babies to places that will disturb everyone if it starts crying.
When someone brings their baby into a movie theater. Inevitably, the loud noises make the baby cry. What made you think this was a good idea? Either get a baby sister or watch the movie at home. I understand maybe that there's financial strain. It happens. However, you shouldn't take a baby to a place where if it starts bawling that literally everyone will have to suffer because of it. I have a huge pet peeve when people bring their babies to a place where people are trying to have a good time and that's not suitable for babies. It's one thing if it's a family restaurant or it's a place where if the baby starts bawling it won't disturb literally everyone. If the baby will disturb literally everyone then don't bring it. High end restaurants, movie theaters, etc. So annoying to be spending lots of money on a place I don't even get to enjoy because someone decided it was a great idea to bring a baby. Sorry for the long writing. I could go on forever.

I agree, and also when they're in the actual movie itself when they think they need to constantly cry. It's almost like the noise is required so that people's brains can register that they're present in the movie. For example, if there's a scene where characters are walking through a park and they walk past a random person with a stroller or carriage, it doesn't need to be automatically crying if it's not part of the plot. We can see the carriage.

Heres one that I see a fair amount:
How do we get the message across that this character is smart? I know! Let's make all of their lines in technical/scientific jargon instead of plain old speech, let's make them play an instrument, all of their hobbies either homework or rarely referenced hobbies that are tradionally associated with nerdy culture like star trek, cosplay, world of warcraft and dungeons and dragons.. let's make them incapable of understanding anything that isn't presented to them under a microscope or in a book, hate sport of any kind, probably have some really awkward posture, dress ridiculously formal (extra point for overly thick glasses and/or a bow tie) and oh, and they MUST get bullied.
Cos that is the only way to portray a character as smart.
It works for other characters types like dumb or "the badboy" types, but I've seen quite a few of these "genius" character types over the holidays so it's fresh in my mind.

Long story short, Lara's injury came from a stray nerf dart while playing, or some.other dumb shit. Also, she's not actually mute. It's just some dumb religious ritual, which she only breaks to save Aiden when Julie damn near kills him after a week of stalking and torture or some other bullshit.

In terms of content: drawn-out emotional scenes in the middle of an action sequence. Seriously, who has a 5 minute long love declaration or mourning moment when there's a volcano erupting in the distance, 5 different species of monsters are wreaking havoc around you, and a veritable army of people is trying to turn you into the human equivalent of swiss cheese? I find myself wishing the characters die then and there for their mind-boggling, horror flick level of stupidity.

When a character spits out a handfull of blood in a fight, and just fights more
For that to happen, you have to be internaly damaged ( most often lungs ), and your organs are ruptured or your bones pierced trough them
You don’t get to fight with that kind of damage, you colapse and you suffocate in a minute, also moving is probably impossible becouse the sharp pain in your chest is so bad that it debilitates your movement

One of the biggest things for me is unrealistic dialogue, especially if it has to do with children. 8 year old children who act like 8 year olds but talk like a college student is the fastest and most effective way to make me loathe the film. Or vice versa, where a perfectly normal person acts like an idiot for comedy reasons, and nobody bats an eye because "oh that's just so-and-so being so-and-so". If it was in real life they would be in a mental hospital or some shit lmao.
And the 3 minute scenes where they say absolutely fucking nothing while trying to explain this science thing, thinking that saying big words that mean jack-shit when put together makes for a healthy and acceptable explanation. The best movies are the one where this really cool gadget makes perfect sense but doesn't need half the movie to explain how it works. That's why i'll always love the Mr. DNA scene from Jurassic Park, since the child-friendly explanation made perfect sense given the situation, and once it was addressed it wasn't really talked about again unless it made sense to do so.
And probably the most annoying is the obvious placement of LGBTQ+ characters simply to attract LGBTQ+ members, and then making said member constantly remind everyone he's apart of LGBTQ+. Obvious pandering that immediately detracts from the realism of said movie, making me remember that this is just a film made by a greedy director who wants as much people to see it as possible.

If your TV/Stereo is not too old it might have something akin to a "Night Mode" that changes the Dynamic Range so you can hear explosions and dialogues at the same level. It usually was a premium feature, but lately more and more sound systems include it, results may vary depending on how well implemented it is and the content you're watching, but it helps a lot.

Gun sounds in general tend to be garbage. Any non-suppressed shot in a small or normal sized room should have everyone's ears ringing, and it will be uncomfortably loud even in large or massive rooms.
Speaking of suppressed, I hate when they use suppressors in public and no one reacts. Even John Wick still pushes this bullshit, and this is a huge part of why suppressors require hefty tax stamp. Thanks to Hollywood thinking suppressors make virtually any gun borderline silent. When all they do is bring guns down to just below ear damaging levels. That crowd of people is still going to hear those two people having a gun fight in the middle of a store.

@@piranhaplantX I know, I’ve seen real suppressors been used, they only quiet the sound of the bullet is subsonic, otherwise there’s still a loud crack as the bullet flies through the air. The only bullet I can definitely say is quiet with a suppressor is a .22. Anything larger still makes a crack when it goes off

Apparently for my dad it’s when a movie portrays the moon landing communications blackout as happening when they’re already on the moon. As soon as a movie has that as a plot point, he hates it.

War movies. Hundreds of bad guys die instantly after being shot one time. They're not wounded, crying, being treated. As soon as one of the good guys, or worse the main character, is hit they have 5 business days to lay on the ground, bleed, reminisce, joke, or just talk to their buddies to make their deaths more impactful. They're never in pain, they aren't being treated, they aren't incapacitated in any way. Takes out the realism.
I actually appreciate when a movie just takes a lead character and drops them in an instant and their buddies have to keep fighting without looking back or taking time to register the death at that moment. It is also more realistic to have the character mortally wounded and watch the medic doing everything they can to treat them, only for it to ultimately fail.

      @lorenzocassaro3054 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

I see your point, but you also have to remember that "realistic" doesn't necessarily equal "good".
If war movies were realistic, the protagonist would always be dead after the first engagement, but that doesn't make for a compelling story now, does it?

    • @user-mu4fz6zz8s
      @user-mu4fz6zz8s 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@lorenzocassaro3054 I think the story would be more impactful if it showed war and death to be as brutal and unremorseful as it is in real life. Imagine watching a character that you slowly feel a bond with gets taken down without so much as a warning. You feel what those close to that person feel. For that character, only their story really ends in that moment.
I get that this wouldn't be a fun movie to watch, and most people wouldn't like it.

18:41 In my experience it is the opposite. The peasants are always dirty with mud on their face and wear gray or brown. I know that hygiene was not on the same level then as today, and at some point they closed the public baths, but people didn't walk around covered in mud and their clothes had color.

All of the kid’s movie plots combined look like this:
Bullied kid wants to go on an adventure but miserably fails in backstory. Skip like 14 years to get to the point of interest, kid reaches adulthood and discovers some hidden powers that help him go on the adventure. He meets new friends, works on emotional problems, then gets captured by his turned evil father. Via the usage of conversation-gained emotional stability, a new power is revealed and the father gets engaged in a not-so-epic battle where of course the hero prevails, the father gets thrown into a prison and not turned into dust or something, kickstarting the sequel and it’s first scene being the father in prison. Of course this all takes place in a frozen timeline, because all of the movie characters don’t age after 19 to create the illusion of immortality in the watcher’s eyes. Because who would like to see such a beloved protagonist experience the effects of natural aging.

    What ruins a movie instantly?
Those 'ejector seat' moments where the movie turns back into a movie right in front of us, and ceases to even be entertaining, usually because we hit the mine named 'director's private agenda'. Or 'I'm gonna copy Kubrick right... now!' or any of a dozen other things that defeat the movies existence and flings us back into the 'real' world without so much as a 'by your leave'.

The ever so predictable situation of:
Oh no, someone important to the main character has been kidnapped by the bad guy
And they’ll only give them back if the main character does a thing that will help the bad guy and they’ll let the important person go, “or else”
Main Character: “Fine, but only if you let them go”
Main character does the thing and-
    *GASP*
The bad guy doesn’t hold up their end of the bargain. It’s almost as if they’re the antagonist or something.
It’s such a tired situation and I’m sick of it.

Oh my god I got a surge of anger when I heard the one about the quiet dialogue/loud action sequences. As someone still living with my parents it’s such a pain in the ass to the point that I rarely watch movies on the TV because I can barely chat with friends at night without waking people up and annoying them, let alone watch a movie which goes from no sound to BOOOOM 200 DECIBEL ACTION SEQUENCE BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED RIGHT?
Even better, I can’t watch the movie in the daytime either since my parents refuse to get curtains for the windows and back door. So much light filters in that I can’t see the fucking screen.
It’s a pain in the ass for me, who hates loud noise, and for my parents, who can’t sleep due to the noise, so I rarely watch movies anymore.

I hate it when the plot has something to do with something that happened in the past, and the characters CONSTANTLY say exactly how long ago it was. I first noticed it watching Trolls. WHY do the characters say the old lady was "banished 20 years ago!" EVERYTIME its brought up?? Say it was 20 years ago once, after that the amount of time doesn't really matter!

Misunderstandings that could be solved in one sentence that get stretched out in to a 10 minute fight that ends with one of them almost or actually dying.
Batman v Superman comes to mind. Seriously there are not enough hands in the world to count the number of opportunities he had to just say "Lex Luthor has my mother and is forcing me to fight you. Please help me find her." He didn't even have to do that. Why? Because he's freakin superman. He could've rescued his mother, stopped the birth of doomsday, got rid of the spaceship and locked up Lex before he finished his cartoonishly evil monolog.

    Time Skips.
You'll be watching a group of young characters - either kids or teens - for about 20 minutes and then right after some serious situation happens, it fades to blank and you see 'XX Years Later."
With movies like 'Stephen Kings It' It's fine because they close up all lose ends and take care of the threat. In the time Skip, the are just going back to deal with the threat returning.
But in most cases, it is so annoying when you get familiar with the characters and it suddenly jumps ahead years later, right after something major happens. You want to see what the characters due to resolve the situation, only to it to be forgotten about.

    - Romance movies
    - unnecessary romance subplots with no substance
    - the glasses automatically makes you nerdy and unattractive trope
    - superpower imbalances
    - the idiot box and Chekhov's Gun
    - moms making a feast for breakfast and NO ONE eats it
    - invincible main characters
    - bad opening tone. For example, the Order of the Phoenix opened up with an epic chase scene and a sense of urgency which presented a real threat and everyone had to go into hiding. It set the tone that this isn't lighthearted and sh*t was about to get real. Then the next scene was so tone deaf and stupid. It was an outdoor wedding. Out in the open. And the hosts invited everyone with no regard to anyone's safety. Might as well put up a neon sign stating where they were. I predicted the wedding was going to get ambushed and it did. It killed the tone and I couldn't take it seriously nor care for the rest of the film.

About the main charcater being invulnerable, in those harley quinn series where, within the space of a few minutes, harley's grandparents get shot and their insides go everywhere and thheyre immediatley dead, then harley gets shot and she has a small hole on her side and continues to talk and fight.
Another example from this film where a kid makes friends with a dinosaur or something, he gets into a car crash and both his parents die. He walks away with like 1 scratch.
