I like the way how in the beginning, he is swamped by other people telling him what he should do, who he should be. Then he takes their words and makes them into music, makes them his act. He adds layers and layers on top of it and at the climax of it all, you can't even really hear their comments anymore. He's drowning out other people's opinions with what he wants to make.

and then all he hears is "Mr Burnham." respecting his name.

I saw this in a video but I’m gonna say it here. The entire song he’s been pointing at people who think they know what he’s like and everyone about him but when he hears Mr Burnham at the end he’s pointing at the crowd which means he’s also talking to/about us, we don’t know anything either, all we see is his persona on stage

He's also wiping tears in the beginning while starting a little synth and by the end it seems like he's desperate to just shut the voices off trying everything he knows to drown them out

Watching someone with empathy watch this Bo Burnham video for the first time.
Waiting for that ONE moment where it becomes a song from a cacophony of voices ... and you see the wonder and sadness pass on this stranger's face on TH-cam and feel instantly connected because of it.
    It's such a blessing.
    Bo is a blessing.

So glad you chose this one! It's one of my favorites. He turns the negative voices battling him into music. It's like an amazing study in cognitive behavioral therapy. So beautiful. Thank you for your insight! Oh, and you look great in blue! 😉 💙

What is really outstanding is his capability of turning their empty and void comments into fuel for his own equilibrium. As in "if I accept this shit it will destroy me, so I'd rather turn into something creative, somehow poetic, fun". Once again a great message from Bo: try and find what you like, what makes you feel good, and pursue it whatever it is. As in Chinese martial arts where you turn your opponent's strength into your own.
And the "i totally dig it, it's out there, I totally get it" sentence is a masterpiece: we (superficial people, the industry, exploiters) dig into others, into artists, get out what we want and just grab it without asking. Like we do with natural and mineral resources in the subsoil. He is sooooo smart and sharp.

  • @demiviral95
    @demiviral95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

He's trying to drown it all out with his music, his performance, but no matter how much he tries it was still droning on in the background. So in the end he decided to embrace it in a way and incorporated it directly into his performance. I think this was the first show of his where he started having these very self aware and reflective works. It was probably cathartic at first, but it slowly ate away at him which is probably part of what caused his break downs later in his career....
I guess I just think I know him, but truly none of us really know him, we just know what he puts out there, which is probably just a very small piece of what all was going on in his life.

I hate the way you’re analyzing him but only because I do the same thing. You just try to see what someone’s perspective would be at that time and give your opinion on it but you also have to end it by saying you know, I don’t really know this is just my observation because even you are insecure in what you said. Your comment is too real.

This entire thing is an internal story of how he got through it.
I don't know if I'm right, but for now... I'm convinced... music got him through it.

Yes! The one I've been waiting for! As an introvert I can relate to having people take me the wrong way. I've had people say I'm aloof, a snob, or depressed because I'm quiet. I'm just observing and listening, I choose my words carefully because I have to process things internally before speaking, and I need to have a lot of alone time to recharge.

    • @TherapeuticReactions

I totally understand, the world will always test our truth. For example when that guy says it's because his tall, what a smart way of showing people will always have thier insecurities and thoughts thrown at us while in the meanwhile we can think they judge us on something entirely different which shows the insecurities we face. It's a war between one self reflection to another. That's what I found fascinating about this act as well.

I was so hoping that you would eventually react to this act, SO thank you for that, I have seen this like a billion times both without comment and with different reactions and I really appreciate yours a lot, many different opinions, but at the end of the day, we never really know anything.
What I do know is that I totally understand that an act like this would be tremendously hard for me to do live, I can envision it in my head, but it takes real courage and love of performing to actually do it, the love for performing has to be greater then the fear of performing, it's interesting.
Often what comes to mind with Bo is Duality, the war within, we all have it to some extent or another, I think maybe it's just a matter of finding our own balance IDK. but I have said it a billion times I know, Bo is an absolute Genius in my eyes and truly deep which is why i love Bo so much, it's because he makes people think more deeply about things instead of just staying on the surface where what I call the nonsense and noise resides.
    Anyway, thanks again. much appreciated.

Ok, what you said at the end actually blew my mind. “The only thing we really know is what we want to think of you” I had to rewind it a couple times to fully comprehend it. I actually also accidentally pushed the last video button then I pushed the next video button and I had to go into my history to find your video again and because it’s at the end it restarted so I had to scroll through the video. Just because I felt it but wanted to hear it again. The only reason I’m even explaining what happened is so you know. It was important enough for me to hear that I actually made an effort.

To me it's beautiful all these voices he hears they echo in his head but slowly he puts music over it more and more till it nearly drowns it out as he uses this negativity to fuel his creativity and at the very end it's almost this call back to reality as it ends on Mr Burnham as if to criticize him for "acting out"

Man I wish I could channel all my darkness I feel into such amazing n beautiful works of art as he does over n over... I can't even figure out myself what it is I want to say or what's really going on, let alone translate it into such relatable empathy-evoking masterpieces, such as he creates... his pieces are so tragically beautiful... I've been obsessed with his videos since I first stumbled upon him 2 days ago, n my heart just breaks for him so much cuz I could see the pain he was so thinly veiling that no one seemed to notice, in all his songs n even in his standup, n I thought oh God he's trying to say something but no one is listening to him... n I was afraid to Google him to find out if... well, to put it bluntly, to find out if he was still in this world, cuz he honestly started looking like a suicide in the making if someone didn't start hearing his obvious screams for help... n then I saw one reactor talking about how he had taken a 5 year hiatus after his make happy special, with the can't handle this right now, encore, n had recently released a new special, etc... n lord his all eyes on me song... like good God man he just has so much pain that it's almost actually physically visibly radiating from every part of him... ya just wanna fucking put him in your pocket n protect him from all the bad in the world... this dude and his (art just seems to be so damn diminishing a word to call his... creations... that's better, somewhat) creations, just get kinda stuck in uour soul n illuminate every dark corner of your own hidden pain, n make it impossible to ignore any longer... hope at least some of what I just said made some kind of sense ugg

We all have a fairytale in our heads (see the ladder of inference). This piece does a good job of revealing just a couple different perspectives. We all think of something different when we hear the word "boat" based on our circumstances and experience.
Healthy communication with secure attachment helps us share perspectives and grow closer. Bo helps us challenge our various perspectives.

I just stumbled into your reactions and really enjoy your thought process.
    Subscribed.
I will say, INSIDE really is an interwoven experience with a structure and flow (as I’m sure you can imagine given the brain that constructed it).
I know that to experience Bo with your audience you have to watch it disjointed and across time, that’s just the nature of the medium but I wondered if you know how much you are not seeing that is between these songs in the special itself?
Would you consider rewatching inside in its true form off camera after you are done with its scattered parts and then come talk to us about that experience?
    I really hope you do.
Maybe you have mentioned this - I’m sorry I haven’t watched all of the videos yet.
    Thanks for such great reactions.

Been loving your videos. Thanks for sharing your perspective with us. There is a song I think you'd appreciate. Shrunk By Aesop Rock. It's a song about his experience with his own therapy visits. It's a story kinda told in three songs: Get out the Car, Shrunk, and Kirby but they all stand well enough on their own.

Comedians get on stage and tell jokes and people feel like they get to know the comedian the more they watch them. It’s a weird parasocial dynamic where we (as the audience) think we know who the comedian is because we hear the jokes they tell. When in reality we know less than .01% of who they actually are. We can read everything on the internet but to truly know who someone is, is a paradox in itself because most of us don’t even know who we are.
This comment was brought to you by vodka and sativa. (And years of therapy) 😅
