    From a fashion perspective, I tend to agree, however, from a practical outdoorsman point of view, I don't. The wide brim hat is functional for shading the eyes and general protection. I'm waiting on my first kilt, specifically for hiking and backpacking. It will be a utility kilt but I can see myself wearing a kilt casually in the future.

    The Scottish traditional workman's flat cap is called a 'Bunnet' as in bonnet. It was never worn with a kilt but why not break tradition once in a while. The actual highland bonnet was quite wide and fell to one side to cover the side of the face. Military berets do a similar thing.

      There are many historical victorian and Edwardian photos of peaked caps, being worn by the Royals and their gillies.

    I've been a fedora wearer for decades, and the look suits me fine. An "hourglass shape", as Eric puts it, is for women only! 😉 I agree that a baseball cap would look hideous. I may try an Aussie slouch-hat to see if that would work.

    What about a boogie hat with rolled sides for hiking and camping? What do you think? Or should this be saved for the next, 1st Friday?

    What about tam bonnets? They resemble berets...but have seen them worn at highland games in the past. They are like the one w the ball on the top, but not. One would go as far as describe them a chef's hat but flat and usually worn off to the side.

    I don't look good in a Tilly hat since they are made for slender people. I wear a flat cap, baret, or Aussie if it is really sunny (I don't like getting sunburned).

    Thing that REALLY annoys me and many Scotsmen are guilty of this too is, when ye wear a Glengarry, bring the tip of it down to very close, I wear mine about a half inch above my eyebrows( aye, everyone will be different!) And tilt it to the right! There is not a worse look than someone wearing one and it tilted right back.

    • @la_old_salt2241
      @la_old_salt2241 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree, the Glengarry is a military style head cover and does NOT look good worn back on the head. If not worn cocked to the right and forward on the head, at least wear it forward and squared up on the head. That's a much better look with the Glengarry than worn back on the head.

    • @scottishjamie1267

      Exactly, in this day and age of everyone greetin about cultural appropriation and half the pipe band world are walking about mixing and matching military dress and looking like brass band clowns 🤡 makes me fume 🤬 and 🤢 vomit at the same time!!!

    • @la_old_salt2241
      @la_old_salt2241 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @scottishjamie1267 Yes, given the military foundation, or at least, background of pipe bands if they wear the Glengarry, it looks more sharp and squared away if worn properly. Otherwise, the Balmoral may be a better choice. In fact, I modify my Balmorals by removing the liner inside them when I purchase each new one. I do that for several reasons. I live in a much hotter climate than Scotland. I don't need the extra layer in my Balmorals. Plus, I like the lay of the cover a bit better without it. Cheers Jamie!

    Baseball caps really don't look good with a Kilt, but then again I don't think utility Kilts are a good look either.
    I'm more traditional, even in casual mode.
    Got an Irish flat cap, Balmoral, and Glengarry, love 'em all.

    I hate to reference "Outlander" as a source, but I really like the large, slouchy beret-like hats the Highlanders wear. Are they only appropriate to wear with a great kilt, or can they be respectably worn with a modern kilt? Also, do you carry them, and what are they properly called?

    • @stansmith4054

      Thanks so much, Stan! Took a trip (from Texas) to Scotland in August of 2022 and attended the Royal Military Tattoo in Edinburgh. Highlight of my trip!! The formal attire worn by the bagpipers and other performers was total eye-candy!! Love, love, love kilts!
      Thanks, again!

    Nothing wrong with cowboy hats, true they look weird with a kilt unless maybe the cowboy hat has curved up brim on the sides. And cowboy boots wouldn't look right with a kilt either. and obviously not with shorts either unless you're woman.
