I picked up my first KC9 SBR yesterday for $38.99 at Costco! It has definitely got some giddy up in it with that proof. Lovely full bodied pour with sweet creamy cherry, warm spices and peanut butter and chocolate. Great mouth feel. The finish is nice and long . I was a little concerned that it would drink a bit hot but it is really quite well balanced (with a nice proof flex). I'll be going back to Costco tomorrow for a backup bottle. All in all a fantastic bourbon - it will be a staple for me.
I had my first KC single barrel just a month or 2 ago. Wow, I was super impressed. KC9 has meen a high value bourbon for me for years, especially when it's in stock at Costco where the cost is $22. If I see KC single barrel at Costco, I am buying a case.
It took me a while, but I grew to really appreciate this bottling. At first I thought it was too hot & tasted almost grubby. After the bottle was opened for a month or so it really started to open up & calm down. For my palate it was complex & engaging. Easily worth the price.
Just got a bottle today. Overall pretty good. First pour all I got was heat. Second pour really opened up with flavor and I enjoyed it. It packs a good punch.
I'm enjoying my bottle quite a bit. It will be interesting to see if I like my replacement bottle as much as this one. I hope there is not much single barrel variation with these. Happy New Year!
I have to agree, Knob Creek 9 single barrel reserve is an incredible value and one of my absolute favorites, right up there with Jack Daniels SB and Old Forester SB. I also really love their Single Barrel select at 120 proof.
Great review, Peter. I like my KC single barrel store pick (store from Iowa, 10 years 4 months old), however, I am not blown away with it. For the price, it’s definitely a great value. To me, my bottle is basically a Payday candy bar. I always feel like I should go back to this bottle more. The KC12 is my favorite, for the KC’s that I’ve tried. It seems to be different than the other Beam products that I’ve had. Contrary to many, I’m not a big fan of the regular KC 9 Year 100 proof. To me, it’s kind of a dry, nutty, cardboard flavor.
I have had at least 4 of these bottles and they are all very consistent. I hunt for this bottle now and grab one whenever I find them. Here on the E coast I pay around 50-60 bucks and they are worth every penny of that!
I live in a small South East Arizona town, and one of our liquor stores has had one bottle for about a month. They're asking $65 for it. They just got some 12 year in and asking $75 for it. If the single barrel reserve is still hanging around, I might just snag it because I can't find it anywhere else right now.
Great review as always Peter! I recently picked up a KC store pick that happens to be aged 9 years and 5 months and it is wonderful but does improve with a fair amount of water. Personally I favor the KC 12 because I like the more woody/oaky character of the 12. Please bring on the KC flight fight!!!
Knob creek is one of those bottles I have to have always. And this bottle is one that if I see it I buy them. I have the 9 always backed up. And for the money you can’t bet it. Always on the shelf also.
I’ll take the single barrel over the 12 year every day. I have 6 of these and I’ll be getting more soon. This and the Larceny BP when I see them I buy them. I’ll drink the 9 year just to nurse the single barrel. Big JB fan. Try the JB single barrel it’s 108 proof and very good. I also enjoy the Old Tub bib. It’s like 20 in my area. Definitely a keeper.
You must have got a stellar Single Barrel Reserve. I have store picks that are great but the one standard SBR I have was just not that interesting to me. That said, I did put it in a Knob Creek blind and while it fell short of the 12 and 18 years, it still beat out the standard 9 and 15. For me, the KC 12 beats the SBR everyday. I guess that's how it goes with Single barrels though, you really never know what you're going to get.
I would be interested to know, if you compared a different barrel, would it taste the same? I have a bottle of this from 6 years ago and I would rate it as a pour of pepper and distress. I don’t like it at all and I wonder if I got a bad barrel…
Ive had 2 bottles that I loved and the latest one i'm on it not nearly as good. The best was in my top bottles but this one is not close at all. 70 🦌 in Michigan.
The single barrel reserve is a great value. It is not as good as some of the store picks but I enjoy it more than the standard 9 year. Between this, Baker's 7 and the 12 yr... I could probably be content for a very long time.
Unfortunately those bottles are never seen in my area and I'm not at the point in my journey that I'm actively searching for bottles outside of my area.
@@whiskeyisajourney yeah they popped up in my area (surprisingly) and I wasn't able to get the 1st bottle but was able to get #2 Frankfurt and I expect bottle #3 Boston to show up b4 2024 so I guess I'll grab that. Heard the Frankfort is great, especially for less than $10 a year in the barrel!
Thank you again for the great video. This is on my list to try soon. I have had the smoke maple, it’s good but very sweet. I also interested in the knob creek rye. Thank you 🙏
I dislike KC 9 120 proof. Heat and peanuts. KC 9 100 proof is more complex, in my opinion. I have KC 12, 15, 18, and Rye at 115 proof. KC 12 is my favorite following KC 18.
Same here. Tried it for the first time last week and didn't enjoy. Will give it some time and attempt again. Hopefully it changes since price point is so appealing.

I really enjoy this bottle as well. It was my bourbon of the year in 2023. Great value and fantastic flavors. Cheers!

Okay. It looks like we are in the minority here. So far but a lot of people are reaching to this bottle the same way.
Indeed! I am quite surprised.
I’m on board with you. I love this bottle and liked it a lot better than the standard KC 100 proof.
Happy New Year Kevin. Cheers!

I agree. They are with every penny. Cheers!
Knob 120 is one of the best drinkers out there and always on the shelf.
I'm right there with you. Cheers!

I think it would be a good pick up. The 12 is not bad either.
@whiskeyisajourney My wife bought the 12 year for my birthday. Yes, it's a good one.

@@whiskeyisajourney Looking forward to it!
Did you happen to pick up and of this year's Hardin creek bottles? I'd like up see your reviews of those.

Good juice but KC12 is the best!
I'm going to find out soon. I'll be doing a blind with all my KCs in my collection.

@@whiskeyisajourney would be interesting to do Jim Beam flight. KC, HARDIN'S CREEK, JIM BEAM SINGLE BARREL AND, I THINK. BOOKER IS JB AS WELL.
@@peterpete5848 I'll put that in my notes. I like that idea.
Knob Creek not worth the $65 here…
That's unfortunate. Just out of curiosity what do you think it's worth?
$50.@@whiskeyisajourney
Without the doubt one of the worst flavours I've ever tasted....
Wow. Not a fan then. Is it just this bottle or KC in general?
