Thank you for the compliment on my ass. I was on MURPHY BROWN for 8 1/2 years and I was established as the "Bull Pen Worker" character TONY. (Episodes "To Have or Have Not" & "When One Door Closes".) The "Bull Pen Workers" were given a road map of the office by the second AD where we were to walk and end up in each scene. As background artists we were to listen to the dialogue so we could end up in the same location every time. Pick up shots and because we filmed each scene of the show twice in front of a live audience we needed to have perfect continuity. I was given that stopping point for that particular moment. Maybe the AD saw something he wanted in the shot behind Grants head? lol I remember this episode very well because of the gay theme, but I didn't remember my pants being so form fitting and my ass being so hungry for fabric. Your extremely flattering commentary made me blush and my husband of 23 years said he remembers THAT ASS very well.

At the time, straight people were in denial about the existence of gay people in real life too. In the early 90's I often got the wide-eyed gaping mouth response when I mentioned I was gay. It was sometimes followed with "what a waste" from women. A friend suggested I respond "oh, it's not wasted".
Tacoma98 , I often get a look of surprise when I tell people I'm gay. They usually say something like, "wow I wouldn't have guessed" or "you don't seem gay at all" or something like that. I've never really taken offense, I'm also ashamed to admit that this kind of response has sometimes made me feel good, liking the fact that I don't act stereotypically gay. But isn't this an indication of some kind of inner homophobia? Should I take offense when people say this to me? I know they mean no harm and are probably not homophobic themselves, they just have a very narrow view of how gay people "act." I wonder...

As in, comparing and judging things by pure digits than deeper! Every time I watch an episode of yours, I remember how it was for me, being a young gay man in the 1970's. I remember my first gay bar. It had been raided by the police a couple of nights before. I remember my friends dying one by one until I was the only one left. I remember being chocked when a secretary at Nike (where I worked), asked me if I was gay. I stammered for 30 seconds and said it was none of her business. I remember the first drag show, the first sex party, the rejections, and how much I love my husband of over 30 years. I wish you'd do a review/remembrance of the old movie "The Ritz", or "Torch Song Trilogy". I'd love to hear your take on these.

Murphy Brown was a career oriented, single woman who's biological clock was ticking. She decided if she's going to have a child now is the time. So, she decided to undergo in vito fertilization. This was a big deal in the early 90's. Everybody seemed to be talking about it and family values groups were calling for a boycott of the show. Murphy Brown was the epitome of "liberal media." In contrast, the gay themed episodes caused little controversy. My only point was for being one of the most progressive shows on television at the time I'm surprised homosexuality wasn't a little more front and center.

By "that show" I thought you were talking about the original Murphy Brown series vs the 2018 reboot. If that is not what you meant then I have no idea what "that show" is referring to. It seemed to me the most logical reason to make that statement was because you were too young or not born yet when the original season was on. My apologies if I misunderstood what you meant by that statement. You seem to be reading a lot into very few words. I expressed no expectations from anybody. Your whole point seems to hinge on the belief that I expressed some sort value judgement on the creators of MB. That simply is not the case. I was merely making an observation about how much the creators were willing to push political boundaries in one progressive area but were much more main stream in another. My "surprise" comes from how I viewed MB back then vs how I view it now. Back then it seemed like it was smashing all of the political boundaries. Looking back on it now I realized even MB had areas it had to step carefully. Again, this is merely an observation not value judgement or sneakily expressing an expectation. This made me think of when my best friend colleague, started working in the same store as me 8 years ago. The way we walked back and forth as we talked made everyone else wonder if he was Gay, Bi or maybe Straight. So they always asked me if I knew what he was, instead of asking him, since they were afraid to make mistakes and offend him. So I told him once I had a break and he was in the break room, that I was sure we were not each other's types (his looks for me and my gender for him). My poor colleague turned pale and asked why I thought so, and I told him that he had given me hints and that I had a strong suspicion that his best friend (whom I knew was a man) and his fiancée (whom he never mentioned the gender of) was one and the same person. And that I still looked at him as a good friend. He then told me that he had experienced a lot of very negative when people knew that he was gay, so he had hoped that he had managed to hide it, by "exploiting" my friendship. I told him that he had done a bad job, and that there were many at work who suspected that he was gay or maybe bi, but they did not dare to ask him in case they offended him. I even gave him the names of those who had asked me and advised him to tell them at least, if he felt like it, because I was sure they would not judge him for it. He said he would think about it. And after a week or two I was stopped by our colleagues who asked if I knew he was gay, since we still had a flirting friendship. I just said I was glad he had chosen to tell them. He has never been happier than after he came out of the closet for us at work (except when he and his fiancé got married) and we still have the same friendship to this day.
OMG. I had forgotten where I saw the "gum on shoe" thing. To this day, I look at my shoe from the front because I was scared people would pick up on my gayness. I mean, I'm not scared anymore - but that one little thing stuck with me. THANKS CORKY.
When I was in college around this time, my roommate became riddled with anxiety about whether or not he was gay. His brother teased him by calling him a fag throughout their young life and he was confused. After a few days of stress I asked him if he was attracted to men and he replied no. That was a relief to him. But yeah, the language of sexuality was still pretty undeveloped for the mainstream community at the time.
More specifically this past seasons episode. Mac finds his pride. The first half is usual gang stuff and their warped out look then the next half is different and has the most heart I've ever seen in the show. Mac comes out to his dad through a choreographed dance filmed in black and white. I actually kind of cried. Since everybody’s adding their Culture Cruise wishes: Growing up gay in the 90s the most important episode for me was “I Never Ate For My Father” from Dinosaurs, in which Robbie comes out as a vegetarian. (Also, later, My So-Called Life’s “Life Of Brian” which was probably the first episode ever to show a gay teenager actually having a crush.)
Milo.. Any decent, fair-minded person would have a hard time discerning the homophobia directed at Rich and the deserved dislike he received. The guy was a creep by any fair measure. Many people were justifiably put off by him. It'd be impossible to make an argument in his defense...a good argument that is.
The not my type line in this episode is different from your other two examples. In this case, Rick seems genuinely to be saying Miles isn't his type, in the sense that even if Miles were gay, he would be the wrong physical or personality type for Rick (e.g., maybe he likes guys who are more confident or taller).
The straight guy being a little offended by not being his type though, is similar to the Designing Women example, or from the Golden Girls episode where Blanche was offended that their lesbian friend liked Rose and not her. It's a solid joke.
Tejaswoman, I thought the same thing. I appreciate Matt's attempts at identifying themes, but he was off on this one. Also, these themes don't necessarily indicate common prejudices but the natural progression in people's professional lives from writers to producers. For example, if some jokes from Mary Tyler Moore sound familiar or outright plagiarized on Designing Women, it may be because they had something in common: Linda Bloodworth Thomason.
Murphy Brown did a lot in regards to genders and societal norms, I remember binge watching it my first year living out of home whilst doing gender studies. It's so funny to think they only did three gay episodes, I do remember the one you discussed and have to say I thought for its time it was well done, they combated stereotypes but also showed him as his own person rather than his identity being something that is there for entertianment of the straight community.
Would love to see you do one of these about American Soaps and how it took them ever longer than prime time to have a Gay/Lesbian character kiss on TV. Oh and how about then Teens on Degrassi Next Generation and Next Class.

I had been been out to close friends for a couple of years but remained totally closeted at work and anybody I did not already know they would be cool with me being gay even if I was not a "flaming queen"; I hadn't even come out to family yet! The part I found the most funny in 1992 was Corky's str8 vs gay way to check your shoe - I had saw somebody do that during my last visit to the Castro a few weeks earlier....
Dear Matt, I hope you do know that you are an inspiration, and your work is very important. Not only you provide good history lession, but you make me feel much more accepted and good about myself. I am unfortunately from a country which has view on gays similar to what was in the USA 30 years ago, so I can really relate to these sitcoms and gay characters in them. Also, being a 90' kid, it provokes beautiful and sad feeling of nostalgia. Please, continue to do this type of videos.
No that was about avoiding disclosure in the military. Many people in the US can still be fired in an at will employment state if they are openly gay because it is easy to say they weren't performing well (as long as they haven't won any awards lately that would make it easier to battle in court). Look at the recent case of the Texas teacher who *did* win an award and got relocated away from elementary students because she was openly gay. Not to mention many states legitimize discrimination by Catholic organizations.
..it's still technically true in most of the US. We're not included in civil rights laws that protect every other minority. We only have protection if a local government passes legislation. A lesbian couple was denied housing in a senior facility in Missouri this past year, just because of the nature of their marriage. Perfectly legal. Thankfully public opinion has shifted dramatically enough that this is seen as unjust by most people today.
Yup! I just meant that since Murphy Brown is set in Washington DC and DC currently has LGBT employment discrimination protections (technically). It is really not standard though and hard to protect.

Me too! I was hoping that they would make her son gay, they did keep his sexuality ambiguous for a few episodes there after all. But just as they dashed those hopes for him being gay they threw us a bone with the cute social media guy.

I worried the first time I began to realise I was gay. I worried about being bullied at school, and about how my relationship with my family might change. I worried for the same with my friends. And because of this, for years I stayed closeted. This contributed to a long period of bitterness, isolation and internalised prejudice. When I worked on coming out of that closet, (the walls of which were practically transparent at that stage) I began to get happy. My fears were blessedly unfounded and my expectations around coming out were subverted. Im really lucky to have grown up when I did, even though I had no media role models growing up. Because even though homosexuality was never talked about, it was never demonised or othered either.
You are a bit young. But as a gay man of the 1980's. The shows on HIV, the special episodes, helped so much. We needed to feel less isolated and the "special episodes", said someone cares. Those were dark times. It made us feel like someone cared. Hollywood got us through the 1980 and 1990's

Really enjoying the Culture Cruises. I'd like to try and drag you away from US TV for a bit and see if you'd look into "The Vicar of Dibley". The British series starring Dawn French has a lot of gay references, a gay character (Frank comes out during season 2), and the Bishop that is always on the phone seems to go through men like they're going out of fashion. There are a number of things this show does, both good and bad, that reflect on the gay world at the time. I don't remember its exact name, but during its main run in the 1990s, there was a major political issue in England either for/against homosexuals, and this show certainly had an influence on it, including the decriminalizing in 1994. Hope you find it interesting.
exceedcharge1 Yes, I remember watching it when I was a kid and it was fantastic! Super funny and very progressive. Unfortunately they haven’t been able to show the reruns on tv or streaming because of financial issues- one of them being that the show used a lot of great Motown music that would be incredibly expensive to license now.
You ought to try it out - especially if you loathe "Drumpf"! But even if it might seem "a tad embarrassing" to you if it seems as if the lead character is too anti-Trump (that notion is not necessarily rooted in rationality, I can tell you that) - the reboot still finds a way to show how its lead-character can be wrong at times due to her impassioned words and steps! (Which she seems to believe is to be followed by everybody on her side.)
The first season is available on DVD, but you're otherwise right. It's hard to find other episodes because of the licensing issues. You can only find bits and pieces, and specials that included clips from the 2nd through 10th seasons. someone has compiled a series of clips videos on TH-cam that highlight many of the secretaries that Murphy had. I think the majority of them, however, are from the 1988-1989 season (Season 1) including one clip where she tells a secretary that they won't get a long if the secretary is a Donald Trump fan.

I was a complete homophobe based on what teens told me then At 17 I went to a porn theater ( they still existed back then in the 1970s and also read the christina van bell series by playboy it changed my mind completely now I march in the pride parade to offer support I defend them in conversation as a Christian one day a female friend came out to me when I asked her why me not her family she said she always appreciated how fair and honestly outspoken I was it made my day I was so honored I am sorry I didn't open my eyes as a child too bad.

"Come Out, Come Out ..." episode was lampooning people's stereotypes of gay people. Murphy Brown - in it's original run - was always good at doing parody of the way people think and how certain things operate. I'd suggest looking up the video of Murphy ripping the bigoted happy homemaker a new one, or the one where a trio of "Christian" homemakers get into a knock-down drag out fight with a trio of hookers (one of the "Christian" ladies punches Jim in the nose when he tries to get every one to settle down), or even the one where she interviews a candidate who has to espouse whatever beliefs his financial backers tell him to espouse (ripping on PACs before PACs were really even a thing)
Matt, I would really like to see you talk about the 80's HIV epidemic and it's the film AND THE BAND PLAYED ON. I was a hemophiliac in the 80's, and much like Ryan White, one of the only non gay people to worry about what was happening. It wasn't until I was an adult, that I realized I was Bisexual, and at that point it didn't matter as much. Something like 90% of hemophilia patients in the 80's, contracted HIV through blood transfusions... It was a dark time. Although I wasn't aware of my sexuality at the time, I could easily see how I was connected with the homosexual population, because we were both pariahs to the general public. If you ever decide to tackle the issue, and the Film that chronicles it, I would be glad to lend you my assistance and first hand experience.

Well it depends on the viewer, doesn't it? Something might "get a pass" from me while bothering someone else. It's not like there's a committee. For instance my boyfriend (who is Latino) loves arrested development and isn't bothered by the casual racism because you aren't supposed to like them, they're all horrible people and that is clear. But his brother hates it and really can't sit through all the waiter, maid, and criminal jokes about Latinos. And I can understand his brother's POV because I don't think I'd want to watch something where characters were saying faggot this and fairy that, even if they were clearly bad people.

Every time I watch an episode of yours, I remember how it was for me, being a young gay man in the 1970's. I remember my first gay bar. It had been raided by the police a couple of nights before. I remember my friends dying one by one until I was the only one left. I remember being chocked when a secretary at Nike (where I worked), asked me if I was gay. I stammered for 30 seconds and said it was none of her business. I remember the first drag show, the first sex party, the rejections, and how much I love my husband of over 30 years.
I wish you'd do a review/remembrance of the old movie "The Ritz", or "Torch Song Trilogy". I'd love to hear your take on these.

I remember Murphy Brown as being "too liberal" for many Americans (like my mother). I mean she was an unwed mother... on purpose! I'm surprised there were only two "gay" episodes.
Oh, puh-lease... Never ask for too-much of anything because: "Quality vs Quantity" - because if not, then how about I borrow one of the 'Conservadick' rhetorical-tactics dubbed "whataboutism" for a while and ask: How many of youngsters who adore ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S®’ have been shown their place by you? To jog your memory, that show is profoundly politically-incorrect to the extent that "TBBT" looks like its perfect spiritual-successor!
Back to the point, I happen to agree with your assessment even though I never got a chance to watch that show! You must've been aware of ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S®’ if you have heard of the original ‘Murphy Brown®’ but just take a look at how one of the "Conservative" media-watchdog, NewsBusters® (the most-proactive IMHO) reports a news concerning it's longevity in real-life:

@@maazkalim I have no idea what you are going on about. I am not trying to show anybody their place. Since you are obviously too young to remember the original Murphy Brown I'll fill you in. Murphy Brown was a career oriented, single woman who's biological clock was ticking. She decided if she's going to have a child now is the time. So, she decided to undergo in vito fertilization. This was a big deal in the early 90's. Everybody seemed to be talking about it and family values groups were calling for a boycott of the show. Murphy Brown was the epitome of "liberal media."
In contrast, the gay themed episodes caused little controversy. My only point was for being one of the most progressive shows on television at the time I'm surprised homosexuality wasn't a little more front and center.

By "that show" I thought you were talking about the original Murphy Brown series vs the 2018 reboot. If that is not what you meant then I have no idea what "that show" is referring to. It seemed to me the most logical reason to make that statement was because you were too young or not born yet when the original season was on. My apologies if I misunderstood what you meant by that statement.
You seem to be reading a lot into very few words. I expressed no expectations from anybody. Your whole point seems to hinge on the belief that I expressed some sort value judgement on the creators of MB. That simply is not the case.
I was merely making an observation about how much the creators were willing to push political boundaries in one progressive area but were much more main stream in another. My "surprise" comes from how I viewed MB back then vs how I view it now. Back then it seemed like it was smashing all of the political boundaries. Looking back on it now I realized even MB had areas it had to step carefully. Again, this is merely an observation not value judgement or sneakily expressing an expectation. I don't know how I can sound unreasonable without ever expressing either of those things.
This made me think of when my best friend colleague, started working in the same store as me 8 years ago.
The way we walked back and forth as we talked made everyone else wonder if he was Gay, Bi or maybe Straight.
So they always asked me if I knew what he was, instead of asking him, since they were afraid to make mistakes and offend him.
So I told him once I had a break and he was in the break room, that I was sure we were not each other's types (his looks for me and my gender for him).
My poor colleague turned pale and asked why I thought so,
and I told him that he had given me hints and that I had a strong suspicion that
his best friend (whom I knew was a man) and his fiancée (whom he never mentioned the gender of) was one and the same person.
And that I still looked at him as a good friend.
He then told me that he had experienced a lot of very negative when people knew that he was gay, so he had hoped that he had managed to hide it, by "exploiting" my friendship.
I told him that he had done a bad job, and that there were many at work who suspected that he was gay or maybe bi, but they did not dare to ask him in case they offended him.
I even gave him the names of those who had asked me and advised him to tell them at least, if he felt like it, because I was sure they would not judge him for it.
He said he would think about it.
And after a week or two I was stopped by our colleagues who asked if I knew he was gay, since we still had a flirting friendship.
I just said I was glad he had chosen to tell them.
He has never been happier than after he came out of the closet for us at work (except when he and his fiancé got married) and we still have the same friendship to this day.
OMG. I had forgotten where I saw the "gum on shoe" thing. To this day, I look at my shoe from the front because I was scared people would pick up on my gayness. I mean, I'm not scared anymore - but that one little thing stuck with me. THANKS CORKY.

When I was in college around this time, my roommate became riddled with anxiety about whether or not he was gay. His brother teased him by calling him a fag throughout their young life and he was confused. After a few days of stress I asked him if he was attracted to men and he replied no. That was a relief to him.
But yeah, the language of sexuality was still pretty undeveloped for the mainstream community at the time.
Talk about it’s always sunny in Philadelphia, there is a main character there called Mac and he came out 2 seasons ago
2016 - Blech, not a biggie!
More specifically this past seasons episode. Mac finds his pride. The first half is usual gang stuff and their warped out look then the next half is different and has the most heart I've ever seen in the show. Mac comes out to his dad through a choreographed dance filmed in black and white. I actually kind of cried.

Love your videos Matt ! Greetings from Bosnia and Herzegovina, where we are having our first ever gay pride parade this year. Bosnia in 2019 is something like 90s America when it comes to attitudes on LGBTI people.
I just wanted to say that these videos are amazing and inspire me to be happy in life, which I struggle with. I am not gay but hearing about progress being made and people's lives becoming better over the years keeps me inspired and hopeful that there is always a opportunity for a better life if you keep fighting for it! Since everybody’s adding their Culture Cruise wishes: Growing up gay in the 90s the most important episode for me was “I Never Ate For My Father” from Dinosaurs, in which Robbie comes out as a vegetarian. (Also, later, My So-Called Life’s “Life Of Brian” which was probably the first episode ever to show a gay teenager actually having a crush.)
We need to do homecoming queens and kings at gay pride.

The not my type line in this episode is different from your other two examples. In this case, Rick seems genuinely to be saying Miles isn't his type, in the sense that even if Miles were gay, he would be the wrong physical or personality type for Rick (e.g., maybe he likes guys who are more confident or taller).
The straight guy being a little offended by not being his type though, is similar to the Designing Women example, or from the Golden Girls episode where Blanche was offended that their lesbian friend liked Rose and not her. It's a solid joke.

Tejaswoman, I thought the same thing. I appreciate Matt's attempts at identifying themes, but he was off on this one. Also, these themes don't necessarily indicate common prejudices but the natural progression in people's professional lives from writers to producers. For example, if some jokes from Mary Tyler Moore sound familiar or outright plagiarized on Designing Women, it may be because they had something in common: Linda Bloodworth Thomason.
Murphy Brown did a lot in regards to genders and societal norms, I remember binge watching it my first year living out of home whilst doing gender studies. It's so funny to think they only did three gay episodes, I do remember the one you discussed and have to say I thought for its time it was well done, they combated stereotypes but also showed him as his own person rather than his identity being something that is there for entertianment of the straight community.
You should do an episode on the All New X-men #40, where Jean Grey outs Iceman as gay.

Ah, 1992... I remember that episode... I had been been out to close friends for a couple of years but remained totally closeted at work and anybody I did not already know they would be cool with me being gay even if I was not a "flaming queen"; I hadn't even come out to family yet! The part I found the most funny in 1992 was Corky's str8 vs gay way to check your shoe - I had saw somebody do that during my last visit to the Castro a few weeks earlier....
Dear Matt, I hope you do know that you are an inspiration, and your work is very important. Not only you provide good history lession, but you make me feel much more accepted and good about myself. I am unfortunately from a country which has view on gays similar to what was in the USA 30 years ago, so I can really relate to these sitcoms and gay characters in them. Also, being a 90' kid, it provokes beautiful and sad feeling of nostalgia. Please, continue to do this type of videos.

No that was about avoiding disclosure in the military. Many people in the US can still be fired in an at will employment state if they are openly gay because it is easy to say they weren't performing well (as long as they haven't won any awards lately that would make it easier to battle in court). Look at the recent case of the Texas teacher who *did* win an award and got relocated away from elementary students because she was openly gay. Not to mention many states legitimize discrimination by Catholic organizations.
..it's still technically true in most of the US. We're not included in civil rights laws that protect every other minority. We only have protection if a local government passes legislation. A lesbian couple was denied housing in a senior facility in Missouri this past year, just because of the nature of their marriage. Perfectly legal. Thankfully public opinion has shifted dramatically enough that this is seen as unjust by most people today.
Yup! I just meant that since Murphy Brown is set in Washington DC and DC currently has LGBT employment discrimination protections (technically). It is really not standard though and hard to protect.

Me too! I was hoping that they would make her son gay, they did keep his sexuality ambiguous for a few episodes there after all. But just as they dashed those hopes for him being gay they threw us a bone with the cute social media guy.

You may not like it but his casting was done to avoid enduring "gay for pay" allegations (not that it'll stop another faction from flinging "2-in-1 token BOC-slash-gay character" allegations) and I dunno whether Mr @Matt Baume will pick-up on that or not but as a devoted viewer of 2018 reboot, there were already breadcrumbs about his sexuality in earlier episodes before that "coming-out moment" (saying it as an “episode” in this connotation will diminish the writers' efforts [as conveyed by the actor in an interview afterwards]!).
*P.S.* If you're his fanboy/fangirl - for what it's worth: Don't forget that he still could turn-out to be a bi! Well, if that occurs by its 13th episode or if it miraculously gets a second-shot by the network, afterwards!
I worried the first time I began to realise I was gay. I worried about being bullied at school, and about how my relationship with my family might change. I worried for the same with my friends. And because of this, for years I stayed closeted. This contributed to a long period of bitterness, isolation and internalised prejudice. When I worked on coming out of that closet, (the walls of which were practically transparent at that stage) I began to get happy. My fears were blessedly unfounded and my expectations around coming out were subverted. Im really lucky to have grown up when I did, even though I had no media role models growing up. Because even though homosexuality was never talked about, it was never demonised or othered either.
You are a bit young. But as a gay man of the 1980's. The shows on HIV, the special episodes, helped so much. We needed to feel less isolated and the "special episodes", said someone cares. Those were dark times. It made us feel like someone cared. Hollywood got us through the 1980 and 1990's

Really enjoying the Culture Cruises. I'd like to try and drag you away from US TV for a bit and see if you'd look into "The Vicar of Dibley". The British series starring Dawn French has a lot of gay references, a gay character (Frank comes out during season 2), and the Bishop that is always on the phone seems to go through men like they're going out of fashion. There are a number of things this show does, both good and bad, that reflect on the gay world at the time. I don't remember its exact name, but during its main run in the 1990s, there was a major political issue in England either for/against homosexuals, and this show certainly had an influence on it, including the decriminalizing in 1994. Hope you find it interesting.

Unfortunately they haven’t been able to show the reruns on tv or streaming because of financial issues- one of them being that the show used a lot of great Motown music that would be incredibly expensive to license now.

You ought to try it out - especially if you loathe "Drumpf"!
But even if it might seem "a tad embarrassing" to you if it seems as if the lead character is too anti-Trump (that notion is not necessarily rooted in rationality, I can tell you that) - the reboot still finds a way to show how its lead-character can be wrong at times due to her impassioned words and steps! (Which she seems to believe is to be followed by everybody on her side.)
The first season is available on DVD, but you're otherwise right. It's hard to find other episodes because of the licensing issues. You can only find bits and pieces, and specials that included clips from the 2nd through 10th seasons. someone has compiled a series of clips videos on TH-cam that highlight many of the secretaries that Murphy had. I think the majority of them, however, are from the 1988-1989 season (Season 1) including one clip where she tells a secretary that they won't get a long if the secretary is a Donald Trump fan.

I was a complete homophobe based on what teens told me then At 17 I went to a porn theater ( they still existed back then in the 1970s and also read the christina van bell series by playboy it changed my mind completely now I march in the pride parade to offer support I defend them in conversation as a Christian one day a female friend came out to me when I asked her why me not her family she said she always appreciated how fair and honestly outspoken I was it made my day I was so honored I am sorry I didn't open my eyes as a child too bad.

"Come Out, Come Out ..." episode was lampooning people's stereotypes of gay people. Murphy Brown - in it's original run - was always good at doing parody of the way people think and how certain things operate. I'd suggest looking up the video of Murphy ripping the bigoted happy homemaker a new one, or the one where a trio of "Christian" homemakers get into a knock-down drag out fight with a trio of hookers (one of the "Christian" ladies punches Jim in the nose when he tries to get every one to settle down), or even the one where she interviews a candidate who has to espouse whatever beliefs his financial backers tell him to espouse (ripping on PACs before PACs were really even a thing)

I was out in the 90s...but I did live in Portland, OR.
Matt, I would really like to see you talk about the 80's HIV epidemic and it's the film AND THE BAND PLAYED ON. I was a hemophiliac in the 80's, and much like Ryan White, one of the only non gay people to worry about what was happening. It wasn't until I was an adult, that I realized I was Bisexual, and at that point it didn't matter as much. Something like 90% of hemophilia patients in the 80's, contracted HIV through blood transfusions... It was a dark time. Although I wasn't aware of my sexuality at the time, I could easily see how I was connected with the homosexual population, because we were both pariahs to the general public. If you ever decide to tackle the issue, and the Film that chronicles it, I would be glad to lend you my assistance and first hand experience.
That guy played gay guys multiple times in that period.
To be fair, before I came out I wore my watch on the inside, wore mousse in my hair and coordinated my ties and socks.

I would love to see your thoughts on The Kids In The Hall (and not simply due to the brilliant Scott Thompson), but I'm afraid that it might take up too much of your time to do the show justice in terms of all of its progress (and occasional regress).

Well it depends on the viewer, doesn't it? Something might "get a pass" from me while bothering someone else. It's not like there's a committee.
For instance my boyfriend (who is Latino) loves arrested development and isn't bothered by the casual racism because you aren't supposed to like them, they're all horrible people and that is clear. But his brother hates it and really can't sit through all the waiter, maid, and criminal jokes about Latinos. And I can understand his brother's POV because I don't think I'd want to watch something where characters were saying faggot this and fairy that, even if they were clearly bad people.
