That special head from the Japanese show is so damn weird. A lot of Fort Max's on the secondary market suffer from missing heads. This one could have been a great option to replace it had it not been so incredibly awful.
I don't think I have seen design work for that pretender shell in order to check dates. Toy design took a lot longer than getting an episode done. The face is different enough that I would guess it is something other than that?. But then where did it come from? Looking at the 87 catalog, the heads don't appear finalized since the standard headmaster Autobots all have the same face. So maybe the artist doing the character model was getting creative, didn't have it, or had a different head with Fort Max. It may have even been based on the face of Cog.
I've never understood these oddities, but they're definintely interesting! I think i only discovered them via tfwiki. At least these aren't as ugly as that garish J. Balvin Soundwave. Yuck!
OK, I thought Optimus Prime as a tennis shoe was about as odd as Transformers can get. Guess I was wrong.

I kind of wish we had a separate head that could be a stand alone toy by turning into a mini playset like Cerebros did in The Rebirth.
Is there some relation between the cartoon head of Cerebros and the head of Grand Max's shell? Or simply coincidence that they both have mouth guards?
