First thing I noticed was your new right-angle sander, Gary. I bet you love that! Those two rings along the top just really make the piece stand out! Great design on this piece. You just went with the wood size and it turned out perfectly, as did the finish! Great job on this, buddy! Cool pic at the end. Looks scary now but it probably felt great at the time! You look like a rockstar out there! 😊 Fun video, buddy, keep 'em coming! Phil
Thank you Phil! Oh yeah I love the sander. No cords to trip on. I went with DeWalt because we have other garden toys that use those batteries. I had been through that Sam spot a few hundred times the only time I had anyone get out . It took a number of years for the river to stabilize. Lost about a mile of the river when a channel got filled with rocks and gravel. When it did it washes away a couple hundred yards of a house along the river. I may have to make a video of that trip. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice job Gary! I haven’t had the opportunity to turn Black Locust yet! I really love the colors in that piece! Natural Edge pieces are really special! And that boat shot! Wow, that looks epic! Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Carol. I have not turned Honey Locust which looks interesting as well. I spent many hours fishing out of that boat. The good thing is I brought home a lot of Steehead and Salmon. We started traveling my favorite time to fish so have not been out for a few years. Plus not sure how my shoulder would like it. Thanks for watching, Gary

I think they look like they should make good bike helmets too, as long as you have a comfortable chin strap to keep it in place. Black Locust is awesome.
What a beautiful bowl, I like everything about it, the color, grain and your finish! Just really pretty to my eye! That looks like a very nice boat and I am sure it handled the rapids easily, well done and thanks! Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. Most of my time fishing that river the water is considered really low. Being a fiberglass boat the bottom flexes so it will slide over the shallow spots in the rapids. Two reasons I like it when it is low. The jet boats can not get up it and the Coho come in that time of years, Caught a lot of fish in those conditions. Thanks for watching. Gary
Спасибо, мой друг. В реке есть несколько таких участков, но она выглядела особенно плохо, потому что уровень воды был довольно высоким. Спасибо за просмотр, Гэри
Good evening, Gary. I like the ring also. Very attractive bowl with a smooth finish. At the end, great boat handling. Narrow pass with rocks. Excellent!
Thank you Ray. Black Locust is pretty easy to get a nice finish. I have been through that spot many times. It used to be a fun little drop. This time it was real tight and fast. I changed almost every high water after that. The flood was so bad it moved rocks till it created a much easier spot to get through. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Chris! I did an emerging goblet and the base looked like it was made of glass and you could see the grain it was sitting on. So for sure it does take a nice finish.
Gary, I'm in the process of making 20 bowls that are very similar in shape and size, just a different wood. Great timing for this video. Thank's, stay safe and healthy.
Beautiful little bowl, Gary. I'll have to pick up some locust next Texas trip. That shot at the end reminded me of going down Lava Falls in the Grand back in a previous life. Nothing like that adrenaline rush!
Thank you very much. It is fun going over some of the rapids but I use the boat to get to the next fishing spot. There are a couple places that you have to go through just to get down. Even when the river is not at high levels. For sure you had to learn the tricks. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great little bowl, Gary. In addition to the ring, I really like the pronounced grain in the wood. It looked like that guy in that picture with the hat had some hair under there lol. Bill
Beautiful bowl Gary, black locust is an very underrated wood in my opinion, it has such beautiful grain and always finishes so nicely. All the best and thanks, Mike

That is a really nice piece. The boating looked like that was super fun. Years ago being a young buck I went down a little rapid river not as bad as your picture with just a life jacket. Thinking back it was not a smart idea but at the time it was fun. Keep up the amazing work 👽.
Thank you very much. Well after I got out of the Army and before I met my wife we used to flat down the same river in an inner tube. Not really all that smart. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank You Gary...Your last piece of Black Locust (I hope you can find some more). Turned out perfect, beautiful wood. That drift boat looks challenging but I think Gary you thrive on challenges? I look forward to your next challenge..TM
Another grand piece, turned out very nice some lovely gran, i agree that yellow strip sets it off. Hope all went well on the Tuesday. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Well I fell asleep last night again and I noticed that Phil mentioned your new angle drill before I could…?😅 whenever I get back to my little lathe again I think I might try to make a couple bowls like that. I do like look the locust gave also. Like the boat picture too. I believe you’ve done a good job of living all along. God bless, thanks
Thank you very much Barry. Yes I decided I wanted to get those silly cords out of the way. I used to fish almost every weekend out of that boat. Winter and summer. The winter go to be not so much fun but the fishing sure was good on the Nehalem River. Had to rope the boat down a dirt slide but at least there was a ramp at the end of the drift. Oh so much fun! Thanks for watching, Gary
Well, I am envious. Great boat and river. The piece you worked on this time is beautiful as usual. I have a hard time choosing the wood type I like best sometimes. I usually get back to black walnut or cherry, but every time I see another wood, I think that it too looks so great. I guess I will just say, I like wood. Haha. I am envious because it is so dry here right now that I have not gotten on the water as I usually do. I will see if I can send you a photo of a little creek here in Buda where I walk. When you see it, you may not feel too sorry for me. Haha. Have a good week. Thanks for the fun.
Thank you very much Travis. I love all types of wood. That started in grade school shop class when I discovered the beauty of wood grain. Your little creek you like walking reminds of of Macleay Northwest Portland where I grew up. Kind of a hidden gem and not really very long. But it was a great little walk in the deep woods. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you John. Black Locust does have some very cool grain. That was a real adventure going down the river that day. I had drifted it hundreds of times and it was hard to believe all the changes that the flood created. It kept changing for years after that but has settled back down. Thanks for watching, Gary
Wow. I love this form of turning. The grain just pops. I would love to see a huge lathe setup with this style turning a 1.5m x 70cm (approx. 60x28”) to use as a double end bathtub. Would be gorgeous.
Thank you Andrew. Actually as a wood patternmaker I turned a mold for an acrylic spa. I was 6 foot in diameter and Over 3 feet tall. So bigger than what you are talking about. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Laura. Yeah I can see a turtle shell there. It was a tight spot for sure. The other option was to rope it through that section. But it ended up being pretty easy. Thanks for watching, Gary
I really like how symmetrical that turned out. Really rare in a lot of woods. We have a lot of hemlocks in the area. Maybe I can find one and see how it turns out. I'm looking forward to you doing more segmented work. Rockler has a gauge for aligning the mitre bar to different precise angles. They also have one that is specifically for setting up for cutting segments. Set 2 pins in the holes for however many segments you want, align your mitre bare and you're all set.
Thank you very much John. It had the perfect shape before turning to be very symmetrical. I have seen those Rockler jigs. I would recommend making a wedgie sled myself. I will be doing more segment work soon. Just need to catchup on a few things. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful bowl Gary! I love the shape and colour contrast. I spent a lot of hours in a drift boat like that. I worked as a photographer, camera operator and videographer for about 40 years. One of the things I shot was a fishing show based in British Columbia. We did many shows out of a drift boat. Great fun! Nice picture!! Cheers, Rick
It was fun to turn, Very interesting Rick what was the name of the show. We had one called Fishing the West. Buzz Ramsey was on it a lot. He was local and fished the same rivers I fished. Thanks for watching, Gary
Really like the shape of the bowl and the grain in the black locust. I like how you preserved the lines in the bark region. Looks like you have a new drill for sanding -- I've really had good luck with my Dewalt drills; hope you have the same.
Thank you Mark. I was looking around at some of the older Black Locust bowls I turned. All the natural edge ones have that yellow area. Pretty cool looking. I got tired of the cord on my other drill always being in the way trying to trip me. We have a number of cordless garden tools that use the Dewalt batteries so I thought it would be a great choice. Thanks for watching, Gary
I sure wish I could row a drift boat again . Wha ! Anther gorgeous bowl Gary . Gotta love Black Locust . Have you ever put it under a black light ? It glows ! This bowl is just beautiful . And a Great finish to boot . Awesome Gary . As an aside , have you ever tried Water Loc finish ? It is just awsome . It is food safe and I believe they use it on gym floors . Interior and exterior too . We hope you have a great weekend and week ahead .
Thank you Jon. So I used to go out once a week fishing somewhere. That has slowed down to just taking my wife down the Clackamas a few times a year. Then we started traveling when the best Coho fishing was happening. I promised here this year we would go. Then my shoulder got messed up last year and this year.. Maybe next year. Thanks for watching, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 We will pray for your healing . Shoulder are my down fall as well . I have had both rebuilt and one has another tear . 😥To many years on construction .
Thank you Carol. Black Locust is all I have turned. Although they did take a Honey Locust down behind us when they put up that new development. I should have asked for some but I was not happy with what they did. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great looking bowl, Gary. Do you have a blacklight or UV light you can use to view it under? Some locusts have LOTS of great colors under UV lighting. Good luck with your Dr. visit this week.... We're all rooting for you!!
Thank you Dave. Yes I do have a black light and I showed how the wood glues in an older video. ENT checked it out and it was nothing serious. Thanks for asking, Gary
That is a very fine bowl, Gary. I was thinking black locust has all the nicest features of elm and probably none of the negative sides. I got to get my hand on some to try sometime. I don't remember it being that typically orange. Is it quite an orange hue or is your different lighting or camera's white balance off a bit? I really appreciate the symmetry of that natural edge. Well done positioning it and the finish is as solid as ever.
Thank you Jay, The natural edge did work out well. I do have some Siberian Elm that looks similar but you can not count on it like Black Locust. Changing shape is what makes it look so different. The color can have a bit of an orange look. I would have to check the display shots again to see. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful looking bowl Gary. Really like the yellow and brown at the top. Black Locust has a very nice looking grain pattern. It has been a long time since I’ve turned it. Thanks for sharing and take care friend 😊.
Thank you very much Scott. I do think Black Locust is not thought of as a really nice wood but the grain really has a lot to say. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice Boat Bowl Gary. My takeaway from this video is - I recently obtained two smaller bowl blanks of Black Locust; I was able to accent the yellow ring, but I left the bark on the first piece. I haven't turned the second blank yet, but I intend to remove the bark to obtain a better edge. I like your process, and I'll be turning more recessed mortise rather than always a tenon. I recently blew through the bottom of a bowl when I turned off the tenon, and it was a beautiful piece of Ceder. Oh well. By The Way - what sanding motor/drill is that you're using? Mine is making funny noises and needs a burial at sea. Thanks - Lowell
Hi Lowell, sounds like you got a nice Black Locust bowel. I think they look nice with or without bark. My new drill is the DeWalt model. They are all pretty good but we have garden tools that use the same battery. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice bowl, and a great picture! I really like the finish you get with the shellac, but I'm having problems getting an even coat when i try it myself- even with sanding, I'm getting rings and blotches. I sand up to 400 grit first before applying the sealer, but the sealer then ends up uneven and won't sand smooth again. Is the scotch-brite the key? If so, which colors/grits do you use?
Thank you Johnny! My guess is your putting too much on at a time. I wipe on a thin coat and it does not leave streaks, Just do not let the rag get soaked. Sanding does not work good but scotch brute will get it ready for the next coat. I use the grey. Am finishing up a turning and I will try and show it in detail. Gary
@ThePapa1947 that's my problem, I've been using a soaked rag to try and get the softer parts of my spalted turnings to harden up and sand better. I'll try using less and getting some of that gray scotch Brite, thank you! Looking forward to the next video!

It took a number of years for the river to stabilize.

Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl Gary! I love the shape and colour contrast. I spent a lot of hours in a drift boat like that. I worked as a photographer, camera operator and videographer for about 40 years. One of the things I shot was a fishing show based in British Columbia. We did many shows out of a drift boat. Great fun! Nice picture!! Cheers, Rick
It was fun to turn, Very interesting Rick what was the name of the show. We had one called Fishing the West. Buzz Ramsey was on it a lot. He was local and fished the same rivers I fished.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Really like the shape of the bowl and the grain in the black locust. I like how you preserved the lines in the bark region. Looks like you have a new drill for sanding -- I've really had good luck with my Dewalt drills; hope you have the same.
Thank you Mark. I was looking around at some of the older Black Locust bowls I turned. All the natural edge ones have that yellow area. Pretty cool looking.
I got tired of the cord on my other drill always being in the way trying to trip me.
We have a number of cordless garden tools that use the Dewalt batteries so I thought it would be a great choice.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Turned out great Gary! I lived in Clackamas Or. off of hwy 212 for a short while and we used to fish on the Clackamas river.
@@TexasTurnings thanks you very much.
Born here and been fishing the Clack since I was a kid.

Beautiful!
Thank you Todd I appreciate you watching.
My wife grew up with a lot of Vandyke's in Roy Oregon.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 We will pray for your healing . Shoulder are my down fall as well . I have had both rebuilt and one has another tear . 😥To many years on construction .
It is absolutely gorgeous! The grain is fantastic.
Thank you James I am glad you liked it.

Gorgeous bowl...I love any kind of Locust!
Thank you Carol. Black Locust is all I have turned. Although they did take a Honey Locust down behind us when they put up that new development. I should have asked for some but I was not happy with what they did.

Thanks for asking,
Gary

Gary
Beautiful looking bowl Gary. Really like the yellow and brown at the top. Black Locust has a very nice looking grain pattern. It has been a long time since I’ve turned it. Thanks for sharing and take care friend 😊.
Thank you very much Scott. I do think Black Locust is not thought of as a really nice wood but the grain really has a lot to say.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks Gary. I think it would be a great bowl for bananas 🍌
Thank you Marcia. Matter of fact we have a bunch of bananas on the kitchen counter right now.

Just beautiful. Have you tried a blacklist on black locust. I've turned some but don't have a blacklist. It's supposed to effervesce.
Thank you Garth and yes I have used a back light on it.

Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947@ ThePapa1947 Gary, I would like to know if the Dewalt drill feels heavier or awkward than what you were using before.
@@Johnny_Rocket330 what you could do is hit those soft spots only for once or twice and then go over everything with a non soaked rag.
Waiting for my car, oil change, and this shows up.
Cool I hope you enjoy it.
