    Nice chunk of walnut Gary. And a really nice bowl from it. My new lathe is going well, getting used to all the nice things it can do, just turned a natural edge piece of olive that was a off a gnarly old tree. Giving it to the tree owner as a gift for the wood. Keep smilin'.

      Thank you Colin. I bet you are loving your new lathe. It is great being able to give the tree owner something from their tree.

    The “Walnut Wave” !! I love it Gary. I’m partial to walnut,, but this is a really nice piece. A good save what with the cracks and all. Also a lovely soft design and a great finish! Cheers, Rick

    Gary, you are a master teacher. We should call you professor Gary. Amazing how you take this piece of walnut and create a beautiful finished bowl. Every time you say you’re going to take a break I’m sitting in my shop taking a break watching you. You’re my favorite teacher. Keep up the good work.

    Wonderful piece Gary! That is a beautiful shape, and lovely wood. I loved seeing you work out the issues with the wood from the beginning, one at a time. My favorite is the use of sanding sealer and sandpaper to seal cracks. That is an excellent tip, and I will for sure use it. Thank you again for a great lesson, and a beautiful turning. Magnificent bowl. I really love walnut. Your design is awesome. I just realized that I forgot to send a photo of the bud vase project I told you about. But, that is okay because the design and production was a bust. Haha..I plan some design and technique changes when I am doing less hiking, photography and house maintenance. Walnut is certainly a nice timber, that piece as quite dark as well. Is the wipe on poly always a Matt satin finish like that.
    Quite a few design opportunities with this bowl Gary.
    Liked the rollover top but not sure about the large base.
    Thanks

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you Greg. You never know how a piece will take finish. I used gloss poly on this one and like how it looks. Not as glossy as somethings I make though.
      It would have looked good with a smaller base. I tend to watch the grain and try not to turn away so end up with a larger base at times.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

    Nice bowl! I tried Wipe On Poly and had terrible results. I don't know what I did wrong. You make it look ridiculously easy. But I fought with it and fought with it - sanding back and trying again, then sanding it back again. It just wouldn't dry flat. There were always ridges from my fingers. And I tried to only wipe a second or third time, at most. Finally, I bought a small spray gun, thinned the Poly and sprayed it. Still not amazing, but it sort of worked. I'm not gonna try it again anytime soon. I'm sticking with 8-15 coats of Deft lacquer. 3-4 min. per coat.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Dave. Only thing I can think of is your putting it on too heavy. I wipe almost all off leaving a film. After 3 or 4 coats it should look nice
      Fifteen coats of lacquer? Spray gun or rattle can. Which brand of lacquer and gun if you are using one?

    Cool idea on the shellac. I have badly stained some projects with CA glue. What is your preferred speed. I favor 1100. I made a hunny pot looking bowl and it was one of my favorites.. thank you Gary I really enjoyed this.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you Rick. The CA only comes out where there is a crack that might cause issues. I have spent for ever trying to remove a CA stain and never seem to get rid of of.
      It seems I do not get much more than 1100 on a bowl with any size. I am sure like you it is more of how it is cutting as far as speed goes.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

    Beautiful bowl! Good idea with the dust sanding into the shellac to fill in the cracks, thanks for the information. I will be using that now. Does that bottle with the shellac in it stay air tight with the cap on? I don’t want the shellac to evaporate away.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you Joe. The sanding trick works great. I use it mostly for surface cracks.
      The bottle seals just fine. It is actually a glue bottle I bought at Rockler.

    Great results, Gary! Glad you were able to save so much beauty. That shellac and sanding trick is new to me and brilliant. I would probably stay with CA if it's a structural crack. What are your thoughts?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you Jay. If it is a structural crack I will use CA. I will try and do that before taking my final passes so I can clean up the stains.

    Walnut is always nice. Do you often use the wipe on poly without a sanding sealer?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you Barry. I seldom use sanding sealer with the wipe on oil based poly. It is thin and goes into the wood like a sealer wood. With the water based poly I do use the sealer because the Polyacrylic is much thicker.
