    I connected my Victrola record player to a Monster Bluetooth speaker and later to a Bugani Bluetooth speaker and they made a world of difference in terms of sound quality, warmth, soundstage, and presence. :)

    Yes hooking up speakers to the suitcase player made it sound better. But not like the moving magnet stylus that sounded amazing.

    My verdict:
    Magnetic cart w/speakers: best sound quality
    Ceramic cart w/built-in speakers: very tinny
    Ceramic cart w/external speakers: bit better but still a little tinny. OK for second set -up.
    Crystal cart w/built-in speakers: better than external. Louder sound.
    Crystal cart w/external speakers: too quiet.

    When I was a kid, had a suitcase turntable that started a progression to better sound over the years, I now have a pretty nice system that would bring any of you to tears that thinks a Crosley sounds OK.
    So I am glad to see so many of you buying players and getting into records, for some it will be the start of a great hobby/ lifestyle.

    I can definitely hear an improvement when connecting the ceramic cartridge turntable to external speakers. However, I still think it is worth spending a little extra and upgrading to a moving magnet turntable like the audio technica LP60.

    I got a Victrola VTA-30 5-in-1 because my wife loved the retro styling, and I figured it would give me a turntable in the bedroom. It actually sounds not too bad through the built-in speakers, but it sounds terrific through the Logitech Z313 speaker system with subwoofer that I plugged into the earphone jack. However, that applies only to Bluetooth and CDs. I don't play records on it because even with better speakers, the ceramic cartridge is still too harsh sounding for me, even after I upgraded it to a supposedly superior quality stylus.

    Great comparisons! Adding good speakers to the suitcase or similar turntables does really make a difference! I was amazed at how good the Philips with the solid state and speaker sounded! Enoch Light is pretty forgiving on those old systems haha!

    Though the speakers give the Crosley more bass, the high end is still muffled and harsh like it's coming down a old telephone wire.

    I'm still not convinced that the record player's internal amplifier input is properly matched to the cartridge. All you're doing by using the RCA line-outs to bypass the internal amp and speakers. Since the internal speakers are cheap and tiny, then it is completely expected that bypassing the internal audio section would result in better sound. I performed this experiment a few years ago and noticed the profound improvement. I feel that if you fed the signal from the cartridge to an amplifier with a proper ceramic phono input, the results would be better still.

    Project 3 is a good label. However, if you like Enoch Light I strongly recommend to add to your collection his "Provocative Percussion" series on the Command label. It wouldn't surprise me if you already have done so. The orchestrations are fantastic but, above all, the use of percussion instruments to play with stereo effects is outstanding and ideal for sound tests!

      Yes, the 'Provocative Percussion' and 'Persuasive Percussion' albums are great in terms of dynamic stereo sound quality (and some ping-pong percussion) as well as their cool graphic designs on the album covers. :)

    My Crosley suitcase player is so babdly impedence matched that hooking it up to my line in on my amplifier doesn't help all that much. But if I plug it into my phono imput (which shouldn't work - it should distort) it sounds pretty good. I used to plat my 78's that way. So I recommend experimenting to see which works best for your portable. Take care...

    4:04 Yes, Project 3 records are excellent pressings and the original 'Planet of the Apes' soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith was pressed by Project 3 which sounds amazing. :)

  • @TorontoJon
    @TorontoJon ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What if a suitcase record player was connected to an amplifier (which in turn would be connected to speakers) to tinker with the harsh treble and to warm up the bass? That might be yet another improvement compared to hooking up the suitcase player with active speakers.

    • @TorontoJon
      @TorontoJon ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MegaSnake76 I have higher end vintage turntables by Bang & Olufsen, Denon, Sansui, Sony, Pro-Ject, etc. and I've bought amps or receivers for as little as $10 to $25 from thrift stores (like my Marantz SR-2000 receiver that I scooped up for only $25 from a Salvation Army Thrift Store) and my suggestion is for novices starting out in vinyl collecting that may have a suitcase record player that they can hook up to an affordable amp with some decent speakers (used or new) which will provide them with much better sound.
      Obviously, a suitcase player is not the end goal for any vinyl collector, but it's a start for many that are new to the hobby and they can build from there.

Just an idea ?

  • @pcallas66
    @pcallas66 ปีที่แล้ว

    The big speakers definitely sound better, but I'm hearing a little bit of distortion as if something is being overdriven in the low and mid frequencies. I think the crystal cartridge sounds better than the suitcase as well but the crystal cartridge sounds not so good through the big amplified speakers. Cool test.

  • @kevinpatrickmacnutt
    @kevinpatrickmacnutt ปีที่แล้ว

    You should seek this out, but Project 3 in conjunction with Popular Science from around 1967 put out a really handy stereo test record complete with stroboscopic center label. I use mine all the time to determine set up and the quality of turntable. That one may be in your wheelhouse since you like the Enoch Light albums. Project 3 also signed progressive rock band in the early 70s called Rain. They release one album and some of the tracks sound very similar to the Zombies or Argent.
    Just out of curiosity I hooked my Crosley Cruiser to my stereo. It was okay, not great. Not much different than an old Garrard, BSR or Glenburn with a ceramic flipper cartridge. Better tone, still not very dynamic.

  • @michaelfinney2160
    @michaelfinney2160 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Phillips sounds best ! The better quality speakers did help the Crosley. As for tonearm cartridges, I like the AT 3600L. As for serious vinyl listeners and being much safer on your vinyl collection, go with no less than the ION turntable in your video with the AT cartridge. Tonearm weight on those Crosley style units is usually just to much for my taste. Even back in the sixties Zenith had the Micro touch 2g. nice and easy on the vinyl. I currently use Sony PS-LX300 with the AT cartridge. Have a Blessed Day

    On average, connecting these record players that have built in speakers to an external speaker system will result in improved sound dynamics. One the criticisms I have about these entry level record players with built in speakers is that it can leave the listener with a false impression of what vinyl records sound like. So someone that may just be getting into listening to vinyl may think the sound is subpar to other sound sources they are accustomed to. Hence giving up on the format before experiencing just how good it can sound.

  • @QoraxAudio
    @QoraxAudio ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Those bookshelves definitely sound a lot better though.
    Especially in combination with that MM cartridge, that AT3600L.
    Some of the shrill brightness is still present when driving those bookshelf speakers using a ceramic cartridge, like that CZ-800.
    So conclusion: cartridge and speaker choice are very important.
    It's exactly what I always say: the transducers make the biggest difference of any audio system, because transducers are the parts that convert electric signals to movement and vice versa.

  • @timothyweers8054

    To me it sounds like Perez Prado and his orchestra, how much does the record you are playing cost? Where can I get them?
    Legacy ceramic cartridges sound much better. New equipment on new equipment with a magnetic cartridge sounds good. I remember when magnetic cartridges were considered inferior to ceramic cartridges back in the 80s and 90s.

    • @TorontoJon
      @TorontoJon ปีที่แล้ว

      You can either search for Enoch Light (or Perez Prado, etc.) records in thrift stores or antique shops and take your chances finding them or not or a more direct way to buy them would be on the Discogs website or on eBay, of course. Prices can vary between $5 and $20 depending on the seller and for online purchases, one has to factor in what the shipping costs may be.

    • @sonlighter01

    A slightly flawed test for #3 as the speaker is only mono, but none the less it goes to prove the point(s) as required. Just saying!

  • @spacemissing
    @spacemissing ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Chuo Denshi ceramic carts in these players are capable of far better sound quality
    than are the flea-powered amplifiers and tiny, tinny speakers involved.
    However, there are also other deficiencies, so connecting bigger speakers is not an adequate remedy.
    If a "suitcase" player is desired, building one's own enclosure and using a 'real' mechanism
    (such as a V-M, BSR, or Garrard changer) would be Much better.
    Or just get an old one and refubish it.

      A year late to your comment but we bought a suitcase player. It’s only encouraged me to save up for a decent system. But I could definitely see where some people would give it up based on the disappointment of a suitcase player. I knew going in it wouldn’t be great quality so that may have helped.

    Imo, the the powered speakers did improve the ceramic cartridge but with only minimal improvement. Though knowing what I know now about records, I wouldn’t play my records on a ceramic cartridge. Very cheap and nasty, and not good for your records. Not to mention a ceramic cartridge will not last anywhere near as long as an MM cartridge would.
